Blackmagic Raw to me. Quality is pretty much on par with the S5II finally (unlike older S-series cameras) and there's extra highlight recovery even and proper white balance options.
What was wrong with the older S series cameras? Just bought an S5 mark I and am wondering how the raw output is different from the mark ii
I could be wrong here, as I have never captured Braw out of S5i but I think it had fewer RAW options when in your editing software.
@@OBP_ The S5II captures way more detail and texture. It actually outputs each R G B channel separately which results in much superior BRAW footage but also allows for highlight recovery.
Why do u say it captures more detail? I've seen lots of people talking about how the mark ii makes up for a loss of detail by over sharpening (using in camera codecs of course) and so in theory the mark I should be sending out a raw signal with more detail?
Also, if you capture prores raw on the mark one, you can convert to cdng and retain highlight recovery option in davinci, or so I've seen others do.
@@nicolasgobbi5620 the in-camera processing is a huge downgrade over the original S series.
The BRAW output on the other hand is big upgrade. So big that I sold my S1H. It's a much better image in every single way, both in terms of detail and texture captures, but also has less visible sharpening (halos) in BRAW and has Highlight Recovery on top and now has accurate white balance adjustments, too.
With ProRes RAW the image between the S5II(x) and older S series cameras is pretty much the same.
So in conclusion:
If you record internally and don't need autofocus: Stay with older S Series cameras
If you record external BRAW and don't need timecode or OLPF (S1H): Get the S5IIx
If you record external BRAW and like to use autofocus: Get the S5IIx
If you record external ProRes RAW and don't need autofocus: Stay with older S Series cameras
If you record external ProRes RAW but would like to use autofocus: Get the S5IIx
Not to mention BlackMagic has a much much better history than Atomos, with support, quality, and especially morality. Perfect? No. But leagues better.
Morality?
Once again knocked it out of the park. Best video content channel at the moment. Literally thought of this the last day.
Some video ideas I'd love to see is
high ISO test vs other brands.
Comparison of codecs, vlog vs braw.
Most versatile cages. Falcam vs SmallRig vs Sirui vs Tilta vs Kondor Blue
IBIS test in different situations as well as with Gimbal vs easyrig.
Optimal battery solution. Rotating between Batteries vs v mount.
Best recording media. Ssd vs sd cards
Amazing, thanks so much. I have the cage video written down. Hopefully am going to start work on it ASAP.
I'm happy with my initial instinctual choice which was B, been wanting to get this exact setup of S5IIX + BMA. Great stuff man
ProRes is the clear winner in terms of picture quality. Less NR more detail and colour/luminance information retained in the image…but I’d still go with bm raw since it’s a very easy format to use and can pick the quality that suits your storage.
Did you mention your recording settings?
When I saw the A footage I instantly knew it was Pro Res Raw, I didn't even have to see the B footage. Blackmagic RAW just has so much richer and warmer colors.
we need braw for sony camera external raw
looks like you got your wish
I have seen colorist make Pro Res raw look as good as any raw. I prefer pro res raw. I use both braw and pro res. You did a god job with this video however.
I found that boot time on the Ninja is too long
Braw looks great in all of the tests, save for the skin tone which tends to go more magenta. Didn’t really see any dynamic range advantage with either, so it’s good to know that you’re not really missing out regardless of the recorder you decide to use.
Still waiting on that Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K review, though 😂
Waiting for that "your item is dispatched" email. I have so many videos I need to make with it 😅
@@OBP_I am in this same position 🤣
Still can get the 5” version for black magic
I was looking for honest comparisons and I did not find them with anyone. You are the only one who presented them very clearly. Thank you and continue.
i already download your file, but it doesnt work on my computer, i already install all of codec. But still, it doesn't work, i put your footage in davinci resolve, and also it doesn't work.
Good to know for future reference 👌 nice one
Dude nice one. I wanted to do this video but i dont really make youtube videos your much better at it. I have the ninja 5 and the assist 5 12g that i use with my lumix s5iix. Was going to return the ninja but i kind liked it too much, the raw converter app for windows works great for converting prores raw to cineDNG for editing in davinci. So im keeping both. nice review
Yeah, none of the monitors are bad at all. The Ninja V is my favourite Atomos monitor I have ever used.
Cheers much makes me want to switch to Panasonic 😊
Why can’t you do it all in camera?
Forget these monitors that make your rig more heavy ❤
Great video, thank you for comparison, very informative.
Hey, 1:03 the Blackmagic Video Assist cant capture Prores RAW or why did you used the Atomos for Prores?
Which file is bigger on hard disks?
@OBP_ My vote goes to the pup! Seriously though, nice vid. I just got my s5iix. Your videos really help a lot. Thanks!
Good info, @8:07, what are you using to horizantally attach the monitor to the back of the camera like that?
It's a Smallrig magic arm, screwed into the tripod head where the handle goes 🙌
what hdmi cable do you use?
I’ll be getting this for the Z Cam E2F6
Is it possible to record braw straight to an external ssd drive without the bm monitor?
You can only do this on a Blackmagic cameras, you must use a blackmagic recorder to capture BRAW.
@@OBP_ got you thank uou for clearing that up. & does prores have to record to a ninja monitor or can it record to any monitor on the as long as you have an Ssd drive?
Sorry I'm still new to codecs & how they work😅
Great comparison, thank you very much!
Thank you 🙏
The structure of this video is questionable. I was expecting the raw comparison but it starts off with recorder comparison.
Just a quick question, i'm a sony A7siii owner and i want to shoot raw. I read that 30 minutes of prores raw are roughly 900 GB of memory occupation. What about black magic raw? In your experience is the Braw more light or the file sizes from braw and prores for sony, pocket 6k, and lumix have almost the same space occupation ?
Yes BRAW has alot better compression options (meaning smaller file sizes) but Sony and blackmagic don't allow BRAW on Sony cameras, hopefully one day that changes 🤞🏼
@@OBP_ day changed
Good job getting up close with the footage... I use Davinci Resolve
ProresRAW is a true RAW, Braw is not. Because it is partially debayered in the camera, the consequence are, noise are compressed, colours are compressed, to balance this behaviour they had to add a sharpening on the image. RAW is RAW, if you had sharpening on your image before anyone touched it, it is not RAW anymore. For a better comparison, you better watch DPjourney in the subject 🙃
The information on apple's website says ProResRaw is compressed, This is why, when you capture it, you have 2 different options, HQ and none HQ. And also it's much smaller than lossless RAW meaning data is compressed.
@@OBP_ All lossless RAW formats are compressed, decoding them is a simple matter of arithmetic: You have the advantage of RAW (every bit of noise and colour is preserved, plus metadata) without the inconvenience of file size. If your RAW file is noisy, this is a good thing.
Process means: add sharpening /Debayer /denoise
ProresRAW The image is not processed in the camera like BRAW.
PrR work like this.
-In camera: Sensor data /Compress /
-Out of camera (in your application): Decode /Debayer/. RAW Lossless
Black Magic RAW works like this
-In camera: Sensor Data /Partial Debayer /Compress
-Out of camera (in your application): Decode / Second Partial Debayer / Process
(BRAW isn't real RAW because of the partial debayer in the camera, that why you see noise artifacts. if they remove that they will clash with RED patent)
RED RAW works like this:
-In-camera: Sensor data /Compress /File /
-Out of camera (in your application or Red Plugin): File /Decode /Debayer /
@@MrlegendOrwhat about n-raw from Nikon
@@stephanes. N RAW uses Tico RAW tech, they work like REDRAW and APRRAW. All of these are Real RAW.
ProRes RAW is superior. With the Blackmagic Video Assist and BRAW, I sometimes encountered artifacts (macroblocking, banding?). ProRes RAW, on the other hand, delivers high quality and is known for being true RAW.
Apparently BRAW is not so RAW, because it obviously undergoes internal processing. On the other hand, ProRess RAW is obviously more RAW. Which in the end is what you are looking for.
Hopefully one day we’ll see Braw support in Final Cut natively.
Great comparison!
🙏
all these tests are indoors with average lighting. there examples dont look any different than shooting LongGop. why cant people include some indoor, outdoor with model, indoor with good lighting examples so we can see if the image is anymore cinematic worthy for the extra setup of a recorder
“Which” is better
😅 Thank you very much
Lol no problem. Thanks for this! I wish Davinci had prores raw. That or hopefully Sony can do braw soon. 🤷♂️
cute, the dog
Very good video.
Thanks man 🙌
I have Sony cameras and am forced to use ProRes Raw if I shoot raw. But this test shows that BRAW is better, no doubt about it.
BRAW out of Sony cameras would be so amazing. 🤞🤞🤞
PRORES 422 X DAVINCI no raw needed at all
All video assists have had a 200$ price reduction, making them a great deal
You talk toomuch about BS
RUclipss only 8bit ...
