I agree with pretty much everything in this video. In my experience with my S5IIX, there is no best settings for AF Speed and Sensitivity. I set the front Fn button to recall those settings so I can change them depending on the shot I need to get. By setting up a lot of different scenarios in my appartment and outdoors, I quickly realized that depending on the particular scenario, ANY value can be appropriate. Never assume that one value is ''the ultimate sweet spot'' because it's really relative to the light, contrast, distance, particular subject and its surroundings. My advice would be to find the settings that work the best for you all-around (or use the 0-0 default settings) and save them to your C preset as default... but then, NEVER forget to experiment with them to get the best result ''for the shot''. To me, an AF system is like a racing car.. you really need to learn how to ''pilot'' it to get the best out of it.
I have the s5iix, only 40 days. I had to film a concert, with poor lighting and a choir of 30 people behind the singer. Without being sure I chose area+ WITHOUT HUMAN DETECTION!!! 100% success. No one had pointed it out but you in this video. I have a feeling that enough things are already there, we just have to learn how to use them.
@the_black_douglas9041 No problem at all. In another concert with bright lights and "smoke," I used AREA mode with human detection, with focus on the singer, aperture 5.6 and with AF settings: (af speed -1 and af sensitivity-1). Cine D profile and ISO 5000. Amazing results, no noise !!! Oh man, this camera rocks!!!
Thanks for sharing your experiences, very valuable. I am a doc filmer, lots of handheld: In a run 'n gun situation like a wedding, how do you place the box around a person while doing handheld camera work? (ie holding the camera against your face)
Thanks in advance. I picked up an S5 late last year and I’m still learning my way around it. So far it seems to work well, even AF in video, but I’m going to come back to this video multiple times to make sure I’m getting the most out of it.
when in human detect mode, try pushing the joystick inward after you choose a subject in a multi-face scene (also with just one face) - the camera box will change with little hash marks around the flat sides of the box and stay locked on your subject. This works on the S5 mark i as well. Thanks for the tips video.
Thank you! What would be the best mode for a podcast with multiple people but you dont want anyone to ever be out of focus? And what would be the best mode for a dance choreography music video?
That dragging the autofocus box was HUGE. thanks man! Any luck with autofocus in the dark? Often when I do photoshoots and use flash it'll be super dark in the room until the flash and I miss focus about 60% of the time
Photos are definitely not my expertise, sorry. If it was a video situation, then it's just a case of using whatever you can (apture, ISO) to get that image exposed, and then the AF would work as normal!
I was shooting for YT video a yoga teacher teaching two students. It did a way better job in choosing the which face to track (than my stationary a6400), and I could switch between boxes/faces with the joystick. Sometimes I did have to press the box on the screen to choose (especially when she was moving a lot around, and boxes of faces were overlapping) That has been one of the hardest scenarios for me to shoot. Same scenario (but with full class) and the Sony zv-e10 it was a nightmare for face tracking. Focus was pulsing like crazy and I ended up using manual focus (which due to the crappy screen of the camera, eventhough it seemed in focus, on edit I realized that missed the focus 30% of the time)
This was a great video. Keen to try some of your tips (dragging vs tapping for example) on my G9ii. I imagine results will be similar. Any tips for wildlife autofocus?

In the .MP4 mode, most quality settings can apply phase detection. However, in .MOV mode, not all settings support it, especially in high frame rate (such as 120 fps). Just ordered my S5ll to go along with my Sony FX6. Will be using primarily with my DJI Mini 3, Thanks for the great tips but why is there so much pulsing going on in the background during your demos with the lenses in the begining of your video?
Nice one mate! I have regular business shooting concerts but I’m wary and unsure of using the S5iiX in autofocus for it when there are loads of people on a stage 40 metres away and I’m on 150-200mm. At those focal lengths you’re already really shallow regardless of f stop. In manual focus I tend to just shut the iris down to f/11, bang the ISO up to 10000, and that way get a solidly focused shot for everyone on the stage. I am keen to get tighter shots reliably with the autofocus. This breakdown will give me a good starting point. Thanks again!
That's sound tricky! maybe there is a middle ground where you don't drop the F-stop as much and try to use 1-area plus to cover the stage, for the tighter shots the S5iiX will defo be up to the task, thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciate it man!
Enjoyed the video, for like familly home videos of a toddler running around all crazy, what mode and settings would you suggest? I try one area plus with human detect usually but can be a challenge to keep her in the box
I would try zone and make the box a rectangle shape. Removing the top and bottom of the image, also without human detection could work better I feel. Lastly, make sure you have the AF speed set nice and high and sensitivity on the lower side to lock on.
Thanks, this is very helpful! One question I had was that it was not clear if you generally preferred the maximum speed/sensitivity selections, or something a notch or two lower than that, although I'm sure davidmultimedia is correct that there no one rule.
I just purchased my S5IIx. Waiting to arrive in a couple weks to my country. No one has this camera in my city...maybe there´s a few in the whole country, he he (Venezuela). I never had a camera with auto focus in my life. So I will always rely on manual focus to be safe, when there is no possibility of reshoot. Could you give me some tips for people like me, who normally want to rely more on manual focus, especially on important and unrepeatable shots? A button that allows me to focus on an area quickly and (as I'm used to) keep my distance afterwards?

Hey all, I generally will use a dji gimbal when in video for powerlifting events - should I just leave the AF in full mode? The problem I have is the athletes looking down and then the camera switching focus to the person next to them LOL
I have Nikon D2X, when I focus using autofocus for shooting photo buy pressing the click button halfway, there is a green indicator which lights up confirming that the subject is in focus. Is there any indicator in Lumix S5II that tells us that the subject is in focus? Thanks for answering in advance.
Hey, I know you have a video comparing them. But I'm thinking of buying a S5ii (not X as wont need the extras) to make the best looking short films I can. Would you use the S5ii for this or the S1H? I haven't bought them yet and heard about the Low Pass filter not being on the S5ii and can't afford on top mist filters without spending a fortune on decent ones to keep colours etc. Curious if the S1h is more for my needs or does the S5ii provide the same image quality for a cinematic look? Would you use your s5ii on high paying jobs for commercials and short films etc or would you use more expensive cinema cameras for those jobs. I want something that'll be worth buying for clients in the future
For me, I like the S5ii, but if you don't need the AF and find a deal for an S1H I also think that a great option, now is not the best time to be buying a brand new S1H though, as I I can a new one dropping in the next few months. but if I had to pick one for every shoot, id pick the S5ii. Also the new L-mount full frame Blackmagic is in and round that price point, for a short film that could be an amazing camera.
You're right but very often subjects are moving and not having human detect is a problem, so in general you have to consider the context you're in. btw I'm Italian, I hope my English doesn't suck ahahah
For the S5 use MF Manual Focus with Peaking and adjust the Peaking to a level you like. Get a Focus Follower to dial in MF easier. A good Focus Follower is not expensive. Can also have the Screen display in Monochrome to highlight the Peaking Tool if needed. Of course the image profile in stills and video is what you choose regardless of Screen being Monochrome.

I love my Lumix cameras. They're my favorite save for one item: MF. The peaking is uniformly terrible on some models (like the S1), and not very good on the rest. You would think focus peaking would be the same from model to model but this is not the truth. I think focus peaking works best on the GH5. Sony has been horrible in the past with MF, but recently it's much better. But Fujifilm is, by far, the best for focus peaking. Very refined and very accurate and easy to read. Bro, I’m going through your cine guide now. ??? In the drag from one face to another. Say the examples are 1. 2 Speakers at a Wedding 5 feet apart? 2. Gimbal tracking a Bride and Groom slight separated holding hands walking towards you? Your thoughts on best AF settings to use for those scenarios? Thanks for the insight Bro.
Because there are 2 people in frame, I would avoid human detection and just go with 1 area + and place the box over the person you want in focus, also makes it much easier to focus rack between 2 people if that was needed mid take.
I bought a S5ii. I set it up as you suggest. The camera autofocus only locked onto the subject about 70% of the time. PDAF isn’t reliable. I’m selling the S5ii to some other sucker and going back to contrast detect autofocus. It may be slow but it works. Unlike the PDAF. Maybe the autofocus works for video as that is where the autofocus setting are located. For photography, which is the reason I purchased this body, is rubbish. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I work with s5ii and sony A7iv, i cant understand why lumix in s5ii in full hd kepp the contrast detection, its a big mistake, i believe if they have fix it right, many sony users they come in lumix,. And i see in used mirrorless now.. With a 1 wear s5ii, the price is so down.. And the sony because i think listening the customer, even the a7iii is still in big price for a 2018 camera. So I think the s5ii in 1 and.. year, you can find it in 1000e.. Just a beast camera like lumix s5ii, its go down because they dont listen the customers..
Tracking autofocus is dont work well . And this is the true . I do a video for dancer and really the tracking is a trash😭. I love my lumix s 5 markt ii but if panasonic do a big change in the next firmware i think i will sell it .
Fantastic lesson from you, but I was laughing the whole time because your voice sounds like you were recording yourself in the toilet while constipated :)
Your problem is like all youtubers out there. you increase the AF speed to the max so it won't stop pulsating. you need to try -3 on that and use it knowing it's slow but effective and much clearer. thanks bye.

hey, Nice video. Just wanted to point out that its Sigma MC 21 adapter not MC 11 (Mc 11 is for l mount to Sony E mount conversion).
Not again! If I do this one more video, dam it 🤦🏼♂️(it's like the 3rd time). Thanks for pointing this out 🙌

Bro, I’m going through your cine guide now. ??? In the drag from one face to another. Say the examples are
1. 2 Speakers at a Wedding 5 feet apart?
Great video. There's much to learn. So I will watch again. By the way, it's "manual", not "Manuel". The latter is a person's name.
I had the sony a7iv and sold it before i got the s5iix.
In terms of AF… sony is still king… lumix still has a bit more to catch up to sonys level.
Agree, Lumix is playing catch-up for sure! But moving impressively fast, compared to other manufacturers I would say.
@@OBP_ agree, their first attempt has been really good
nice
I work with s5ii and sony A7iv, i cant understand why lumix in s5ii in full hd kepp the contrast detection, its a big mistake, i believe if they have fix it right, many sony users they come in lumix,. And i see in used mirrorless now.. With a 1 wear s5ii, the price is so down.. And the sony because i think listening the customer, even the a7iii is still in big price for a 2018 camera. So I think the s5ii in 1 and.. year, you can find it in 1000e.. Just a beast camera like lumix s5ii, its go down because they dont listen the customers..
Am i the only one with super good autofocus straight out the box???
The MC-11 is for Sigma to Sony. It's the MC-21 that's Sigma to Lumix.
Thank you for the helpful info! It's really useful for me getting used to my new S5ii!
Please don’t forget to press record 😂
Tracking autofocus is dont work well . And this is the true . I do a video for dancer and really the tracking is a trash😭. I love my lumix s 5 markt ii but if panasonic do a big change in the next firmware i think i will sell it .
nice bro subscribe thank youlove from punjab india
“Manuel” focus. Lol.
Fantastic lesson from you, but I was laughing the whole time because your voice sounds like you were recording yourself in the toilet while constipated :)
I have heard that AF struggle with sigma 24 70 when recording 4K 50fps, have you notice or experienced anything?
Use this all the time and it's works totally fine.
Manuel Focus xD
*Mc-21
Your problem is like all youtubers out there. you increase the AF speed to the max so it won't stop pulsating. you need to try -3 on that and use it knowing it's slow but effective and much clearer. thanks bye.
FULL SEND BRO.
If you can't make the S5 work, there is no point in buying the ii or the X. The S5 is awesome.
S5ii is better
@@Ciarawilsonin some ways, and worse in other ways
I have Dave s5 and the s5xii. S5iiX is far better. Sorry, man.
Which language are you speaking?
S5IIX autofocus is not the best. it lets you down when you want i. It's inconistent.
Jesus that accent.
I drastically improved my autofocus by buying a Sony.
Nice, can’t afford one. Plus it doesn’t shoot 6k despite being 5,000 lol
Thanks
