Canon 24-105mm f/4 IS USM 'L' lens review (APS-C & full frame) ...with samples

  • Canon's 24-105mm f/4 IS USM 'L' is up there among the most popular 'L' lenses to own, and it's used by many, many photographers and videomakers. It's the typical, unusually luxorious 'kit' lens for Canon's full frame cameras...but it also works pretty nice on Canon's less expensive APS-C cameras. How well does it really perform. I've tested this lens for you on full frame (Canon 6D) and APS-C (Canon 60D) cameras.

This lens I own for some time now. I am quite happy with it, though on ASP-C sensors you cannot get real 24 mm. This lens is amazing for portraits. Even with my old Canon 1000d it performed really well, now I am using it with 70d and it is amazing!

Usually this lens when bought with a full frame camera as a kit lens, it is subsidized by Canon.
The best lens for travelers. Not very big not very expensive. Fixed maximum aperture for video shooting. Sharp with image stabilization and the f/5 gives chances for bokeh at longer focal length. On the barrel distortion is a problem.

After watching Christopher’s excellent reviews, I purchased the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM and later a used EF 24-105mm f/4 USM (L). The EF-S in some ways out performs the (L) but overall the f/4 (L) is sharper. However, I prefer the EF-S on my Canon C100 MKII, that STM focus is church mouse quiet.

Thankyou for this video tutorial I bought this lens due to it`s price at the time but have since discovered it is part of the bundle pack that Canon gave out with the 6D ( I purchased the lens and my 6D seorately) so not really knowing what this lens was for I have to say it was the BEST accidental purchase I`ve ever made and I have now found I grab this one over my 200mm Unless I am shooting a concert or something in low light .. I love this lens and I never leave home without it .. I have discovered as well the photos are brighter on my 1500D than the 6D but I still would not part with my 6D .. It`s extremely useful as it can be used on both my APSC camera which I use if I`m just out and about but when doing photography for Clients I grab my 6D so it`s nice to know that I can add this lens and my 35mm lens and I am set for the day .. my poor 200mm lens hasn`t seen the light of day since I bought this 2 years ago

I'm looking to get a Canon 60D at Christmas, and then hopefully get saving and buy this lens! What are your opinion on the Canon 24-70 F/4?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 лет назад +4

Thanks! Don't bother with the 24-70 f/4, it's a great lens but a complete rip off. For less money you can get the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC USD. At f/4 it has the same image quality, and it even goes down to f/2.8 if you need. But your Canon 60D is an APS-C camera, so you might be slightly better suited with a fast 17-50mm lens, like the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, or the Sigma 17-50mm OS HSM - you get much wider angles.

    • @NickF14
      @NickF14 10 лет назад

Brilliant. Thank you for that information! Money is of course an issue, which is why I'm looking at the 24-105 F/4. I've seen them for about £400-700 on ebay. Looking at Sigma, it's the cheapest, but having 105mm compared to 50mm as a maximum zoom range, I personally think is better than letting myself be won over by the fact it goes to 17 instead of 24. I'd love to go full frame with something like the 6D, however money is not quite up there. Thank you though, it's a great help having such informative and quick replies.

24-105mm f4 L lens on a full frame camera and on a APSC Canon camera this lens is lens is 38-165mm F4. All full frame lenses on a APSC camera you have to times it by 1.6 to know your zoom range. APSC lenses don't have red rings on them they normally have a silver ring maybe a gold ring. I sold off my last Canon 7D with having both sizes of lenses with crop size lenses and full frame lenses and now i'm only using full frame lenses. All Canon full frame 35mm lenses will click strait on a eos 35mm film camera and they do work very well together. I use all my same lenses on both of my Canon 5D Mark iii and my old eos 300 film camera Witch i still use today and my Sony NEX VG900E video camera with an adaptor witch uses EF lenses on it witch the video camera is full frame as well.

Was watching this and thinking "This seems like a nice lens" then all of a sudden "OH MY GOD IT'S CARDIFF I'VE BEEN THERE!" :P Anyways great review as always, I'll most likely get the 6D with this lens to counter my 600D with the 11-16 F2.8 sigma. Thanks!

Would love to see a comparison with this and the Sigma 24-105.

Wow 👍 thank u so much . It was the best review I've ever seen . Is it okay if I use this lense with canon 600d 😳?

Every Canon lens made since 1987 will work on the Canon 600D, or any other Canon APS-C Digital SLR.

I finally invested in this lens, thanks in part to you...
A cool secondhand one at that as the price was a steal ! mines has been used and abused. Nevertheless, it works a treat in daylight. Not bad in lowlight, however I need more.
What then would you suggest in this range? Of course it has to be an Canon L lens.
I have had enough of third party lens. I really can see the ( light, as it were...) difference now.
I also have a Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art lens on my crop sensor camera.
    What then, can you suggest?
I am into street shooting, indoor concerts as well as festivals ( for that I have a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 overweight lens! ) & parties are my thing, as well as portrait shooting as well.
Many thanks once again for some interesting videos.
    Have a great blessed day.

It really depends on what you feel you need. Perhaps a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens might be good for you, or a nice 85mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 :-)

Christopher Frost Photography I already have a canon 50mm f/1.8.
Do I really need the 85mm on a crop factor camera? Yes, I know that it will pay dividens in the long run, but it is not vesatile for me at the moment. Besides, being another prime lens, it would be limited...Am I correct in saying so?
The other lens you mention may well be on my Xmas wish list then.
A very merry Christmas to you sir! And to all those who are reading your posts!

It might be a little limited. Perhaps an ultra wide angle lens would be fun. It really depends on what you need. Happy Christmas!

Christopher Frost Photography ultra wide..? F/2.8 of course, but what ? Say, a Canon 17-55mm for example?
      Thanks again.

The 17-55 would be excellent. Seriously though - take some time out and have a think about what it is you need for your own style of photography

I don't like how you keep referring to APS/Non-full frame cameras as cheap/not as good. I use the 7D & it's served me great!! It's a great camera & has produced great images. I've had numerous shots published, I've even got 5 of my photos all printed in A2 size & framed, all on display on the walls in the cafe of my local heritage steam railway. Even in A2 size the images are all razor sharp. I watched this video to find out about the lens. As I am currently in the process of purchasing a new lens for my studio/modelling work that I've recently started in. Am choosing between 24-105L or 24-135L lens. I don't want to know about the camera bodies. I know it's going on a 7D

+Richard Harris Don't be silly. I don't refer to APS-C cameras being "cheap" or "not as good" (although in terms of image quality, they certainly are not as good as full-frame). I simply say that they are generally less expensive than full-frame cameras - which is exactly what they are, except for the Canon 7D Mark ii.

    Hi Chris.
First of all I would like to say that I really enjoy your reviews. in fact you became my first choice when locking for a review on lenses.
After watching this review I went out and almost bought the Canon 24-105 f4 L, but in the store I saw the new Sigma 24-105 f4 OS HCM. I did a little research and found out that the Sigma is getting great reviews and even considered to be better than the Canon version.
However, I would be more convinced if I saw your review for that lens.
So basically, I'm asking if you could do a review of the new Sigma 24-105 f4.
    Thank you
    Mika

I'm hoping to do that later next year. In the meantime, you might as well get the Sigma, I've heard it's great

Thanks for a great review. I need your advice between the two choices I have for my carry around lens. I am thinking 17-40mm f/4L and the 24-105mm f/4L. I can get both the lenses for similar price. I usually like taking Macro's, portraits and landscapes. My camera in use is Canon 70D. Help is greatly appreciated!
