  • This is the heavy crash of Jos Verstappen in his Arrows/Footwork during the Grand Prix of Belgium at the great circuit of Spa Francorchamps in 1996. He was very lucky to espace unhurt from this. The Dutch commentators are Olav Mol and Allard Kalff.

      So did I. It was my first ever F1 race and it made an everlasting impression on me. Been a huge fan ever since. The only thing that's sad about these old memories is that they make your realize nowadays you don't 'feel' F1 anymore when you visit the track, you just watch it.

    Jos was only saved because of the raised cocpit sides. If this happened with the car of previous system he would likely be dead. His head would have moved a large distance on impact, causing rupture of the neck. Luckily safety was improved just in time.

    Apparently it wasn't the throttle problem that caused the crash, although he had that problem earlier. Walkinshaw said they found it to be a faulty wheel that caused the incident.

  • @HarryNohara
    @HarryNohara 9 лет назад +10

    Those marshalls needed to have some balls back then. At 0:23 either Katayama or Salo goes full throttle in the very same corner. The marshalls just removed some debris, if they wouldn't have done that, this would have been a disaster. I guess back then double yellow often just got ignored.

    And if you think about it, that year was the first F1 used the high cockpitedge, otherwise Jos wouldn't have probably survived this crash. Luckily for that invention🙌🏽 happy to see Jos stil drive around only sad that he didn't got the right treatment in F1... Als thik about it 96, Max didn't excised jet or was in. So faith really is with this guy, best karter in his era, dominated the F3, F1 debut at 17y showing things in a STR that left people speechless. In 16 starting with STR but after 4 races promoted to RBR. With only one weekend preparation Quali at 4th. Then the race overtaking Vettel on the outside(a move of champions)
    Then faith made arrogant Merc teammates ram each other of. And later he was leading the race with for +20 rnd(on significant older tyres) a former WDC in a faster Ferrari on his back for every round in his drs zone. But eventually stayed so calm that he won the race as a experienced champion.
    Then the most qualifications and races of him where WDC material. This show's he's destined for greatness

      @@deebow6486 In 1995 they had higher cockpit sides with a small amount of padding, but nowhere near as high as they were raised for 1996 and beyond. Sauber's 1995 car already used the 1996-spec padding as a result of their experience with Karl Wendlinger's accident at Monaco the previous year. You can see the different when comparing the Sauber to any other 1995 car.
