    GUYS! My bad...I've clearly got MX-5s on the brain which is why I tried to draw parallels between it and this ALL-wheel drive Porsche in the intro. I still maintain that it's pretty much exactly like the MX-5, though ;)

    LOL Alex said at 0:38 it was RWD then at 1:16 he said it was four wheel drive. Bruh

      Talon276 Yeah that caught me off guard, but I guess that he meant that its rear wheel biased. So a "rear-wheeled" drive car that won't kill you

      At 0:35 he talks about the the _"Porsche 911 Carrera GTS",_ which is actually RWD.
      Well, he had to somehow shoehorn in the MX-5…

    I get that a Cayman GT4 is likely to be more fun. But saying that a car like the GTS isn't fun just sounds like balls to me. And since when was it a problem for a car to be 'too capable' or 'too good'. Come on man, spoiled-in-line-of-work much? I wish my car was too good!

      Matthias Schmitt My MX-5 (Phil) has brainwashed me into thinking that every awesome car MUST be RWD. My bad, guys, I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me and Phil ;)

      Alex Kersten weeeeell, I guess I can forgive you this time, but it better not happen again, m8!
      Keep up the good work, I totaly agree with you about the 911 (although I obviously haven't driven it). It's the same problem as with most other new cars. They're too big, too heavy, and they detach you way to much from the road and the driving experience just for a little bit more comfort

      Alex Kersten Seems like you should have driven the Carrera GTS, not the 4 GTS, Seems like porsche's 4wd is too good for it's own good.

  • @mjhmotorsport

    Opening line: "This is the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, it's red, rear wheel drive..." - Erm no it's not it's a Carrera 4 GTS and it's four wheel drive!!!
    Then at 01:18 says it has "four wheel drive"!!!
    Also mentions "it's the half way house between the Carrera S and the GT3". With "loads and loads of grip, more grip than the Carrera S" - No shit, it has four wheel drive remember.
    Too much contradiction, ruins the video. Get your facts right.

  • @sdb87149
    @sdb87149 9 лет назад +1

    I think why you didn't fall in love with it was because of the extra weight and loss of rigidity from being a cabrio and also that its a PDK not a manual. Looking at a C4 GTS manual coupe that's for sale right now. Now all I need is the money!! Also, too much grip can be solved by getting the 2WD GTS. The problem with the GT4 is that the gearing is way too tall for street driving. Plus, its now sold out, its not a 911 (iconic+rear engine), and the 911's rear seats are quite useful for storage/ kids riding in the back.

    • @HarizHafiGarden
      @HarizHafiGarden 9 лет назад +1

      The PDK is much better than the a shitty manual transmission and I don't he was complaining about the grip

    Your comparison to the GT4 makes no sense at all. Not only is it a limited production car, but it's simply not as usable as a Carrera/S/GTS on a daily basis. The cars have very different purposes. Few would ever cross shop any type of luxurious Carrera with the super hardcore GT4, and that's why Porsche decided to make the GT4 in the first place. If you're going to make a nonsensical claim in the first place (IE Porsche made the 911 better than its predecessor and now it's 'too' good) at least back it up with something halfway decent.
    Just saying.

  • @vanlurton6068
    @vanlurton6068 8 лет назад +2

    Thanks for posting the video. You look like you were having a ball driving the car which begs me to ask why the title? That C4 GTS Cab is not a track car but rather a GT convertible with all wheel drive car and PDK that can be driven on a track as well as for every day driving. The GT4 is a purpose built track weapon that can be driven on the road. The C4 GTS Cab is bigger in every sense than a GT4 and it's also heavier due to the soft top, all wheel drive and PDK. The better comparison would be a manual 911 GTS 2 wheel drive coupe which is lighter, stiffer quicker and better handling than the C4 GTS you drove. Another thing to consider about the C4 GTS cab and the C2 GTS is both can be easily found and should have a lower cost than the GT4. Dealers in the US are charging above list for new and used GT4s due to demand, low production and allocation.
    Lastly, if you had to pick a daily driver would you really pick the GT4 verses the C4 GTS Cab? That rag top can be driven all year long. It has a back seat that gives you additional storage or a seat for youngsters. It has a better ride for daily commutes and highway trips. You can still take it to the track and put it in sport mode when you have an open road. AND you don't have to worry about grounding your front every time you go up a driveway or hit a speed bump.
    I am surprised that you didn't just comment on the C4 GTS Cab and compare it to a car in its class like an Aston. The fact that you would compare it to a GT4 is more of a complement than a "Why I Can't Love it" video. I don't believe you understand or appreciate the subtleties of the car you were driving.

      British car engineering used to be as good as German with the pincle of the British car being the E-type Jaguar. In that it was cheap for its performance and it had a hell of a lot of performance.

      The 60s was the peak of British Motoring. There are a few niche British cars such as Mclaren that produce cars that can compete with the Germans today.
      British SUV's are also top notch in terms of performance but reliability has been their issue.
      There is a lot of British auto engineering that if it was more closely integrated today it would produce cars near to that of the Germans.
      Once the Germans got it right they never looked back.
      The British car industry was plagued by politics. The unions/communists more or less destroyed the industry.
      The reason I am so passionate about it is my father used to work in the British car industry before it was destroyed by political nuclear weapons.

      The thing is that a Cayman will always be a Cayman and a 911 will always be a 911. Personally, I feel that the Cayman is for a person that's begging to have a Porsche but can't afford a one that's worth it so he just settles for a lower model.
      I've driven the Carrera S, Turbo, and Turbo S so there is no way I'll go and drive a Cayman. It's like telling me to go travel on an economy journey after I've experienced the wonders of travelling on First/business class.
      Again, I'm not degrading people who want to have a Cayman. However, the way I see it is either you get yourself a Porsche that's worth it (911) or either you choose a cheap alternative (Cayman) and I hate cheap but that's just me :)

    the thing about the cayman gt4 is that it's a track car and I know of a lot of Porsche owners who like them for their luxury and reliability in comparison to other supercars. it is lighter but with just a little more, you can get enough horsepower to offset that, also the cayman's only competitor in the Porsche family is probably the 911 Carrera with their similar performances. the only way I personally think it's better is because of its supposedly better handling and its simple 6-speed manual which is said by jalopnik "saving the manual".

    I'm sick of people giving four wheel drive credit in cornering. If you're at the cornering limit, off the throttle and barely able to keep it on the track, the amount of wheels added power is applied is irrelevant. In fact having the extra weight up front to support the added front wheel drive negatively effects it. Applying power earlier out of very tight corners I can understand but AWD does not mean better handling directly. Also counter steering out of a corner due to mild or excessive wheelspin is what makes driving at the limit most rewarding.

    This has been a common them ever since the 1997 model was released, it doesn't necessarily have the most technology (it has a lot, but it's so well done) but Porsche made the 911s just too damn stable, drive-able, and liquid fast. Compared to a Viper or even a Ferrari the 911 is a better and faster car (depending on the model of course) for 99% of the drivers in the world.
    I get what old Porsche enthusiasts were and are saying, like Alex is, that they want a car that occasionally scares them or gets squirly, and that's great for the track, and abandoned roads, etc, with someone who KNOWS how to drive and recover. But if you want a car that is going to be fast, smooth, safe ALL the time, no matter how bad the roads are, rain or shine, you can not beat a Porsche as a super fast, livable daily driver. If you want a 911 to go slideways in, get a GT3, GT2, Cayman GT4. Maybe Porsche will put the option to turn the AWD off in some of their top end turbo/turbo S variants (on all models including the Cayenne, Macan), that would be a nice option.
    Or buy some of the skinniest low grip rear tires you can get and slap em on.

  • @jans.2123
    @jans.2123 9 лет назад

    The cayman shares the same engine but makes "only" 385hp, 420Nm
    While the original engine from the 911 carrera s makes 400hp, 440Nm and the carrera 4 gts you have driven makes 430hp, 440Nm
    Ps: just a little notice. I don't now the weight but the Cayman is clearly the lightest.
    The question tho is if it is light enough to take the carrera s or even the 4 gts.
    In my opinion he is going to be better than the carrera s but that's it.
    But if you want a Porsche the Cayman gt4 is the one to take because it just has the best price-performance-fun package

      Alex Kersten Im sorry if i offended you Alex(not my intention, i am a fan of yours and wish you well) but i felt this review was lacking important points. I think your conclusion that your primary fan base would be better off buying a cayman is correct. With the 911 you get more comfort, speed, the 911 badge and shape, AWD (safer in winter), and a more refined interior, my mother is in her 50's now and would appreciate the benefits of the points i listed. Im looking at spending about $100,000 on a car next summer and the best performance for money are tuned 997 turbos or supercharged vetts? +1 for your NA MX5 i auto x mine and its super fun.

      Robert Flagg if this review was intended for the econo-box owners as you said, he would say that it's the best car for exactly the same reasons you mentioned (comfort, interior, 4wd safety and badge). But because it is intended for the exact opposite crowd, he mentions how great it grips and how safe it is, but he also points the viewer to the much more fun to drive cayman gt4

    I don't get the point... you are sitting in a C4 GTS and you are complaining that it is not nimble enough? Why not a normal Carrera GTS? It is lighter and doesn't have 4 wheel drive - which makes it automatically more nimble and tend to oversteer a bit.
    Further - really Cayman GT4???
    You know, that this might be one of the rarest new [and not super expensive] cars on the world for the moment? Porsche might build about 1200 worldwide and it is pretty much since it was officially released [few hours after that] sold out.
    Next stop is the Spyder. I am sure, that this is also not built in big numbers...
    Further - cars are not only there for driving fun. A 911 is more practical with the rear seats [or at least the space behind the seats, if you opt out the seats]. It is also a status symbol. The thing is: who needs a Turbo S [or even a Turbo] - the normal Carrera S or GTS is a fantastic package. But it is like always, that you wanna show, that you have the better car, right?

    • @banddude121
      @banddude121 9 лет назад +2

      Dominik MJ Well they right top x lists and copy and paste other articles from other websites. Not much there to begin with. The regular C4S beat a multitude of cars in Motor Trend's Best Driver's Car. Wouldn't quite take their opinion seriously at all.

    • @Dominikmj
      @Dominikmj 9 лет назад +1

      Lone Heaven The review cars - they cannot be biased? Are you kidding me? In which universe are you living? Why don't I see a coherence?
      The problem is, that they are suggesting the GT4 - which is literally out of the picture. You could suggest as well to put fairy dust above an 911. If they would be take their review seriously, they would know, that the GT4 is long time no more available!
      The second thing is the choice of their car. It is a bit like driving a Bentley and say, that it is not agile enough. A Carrera 4 is rock solid. It is far more stable and save on the road - this makes it a great choice in countries, which have a good share of rainy and snowy weather and people who would like to drive it year around. It is not the review itself - it is the verdict, which is rather pointless, which ticks me off...
      A reviewer needs to have the ability to understand the nature of cars, and which cars to compare - and off course as well the market, they are in.

    • @bighands69

      Dominik MJ
      It is about driver style and technique.
      Porsche used to be about light weight cars that you could throw around and then at some point they lost their way.
      And now they are starting to get back to that.
      He (reviewer) is not saying that he hates or thinks this car is not good. He is saying that this car is really competing against other Porsche cars. This is how far Porsche is ahead of everybody else.

    • @Dominikmj
      @Dominikmj 9 лет назад

      bighands69 I do understand. However you have to compare [and choose] apples with apples and not with oranges.
      Let's face it: the "consumer advice" to buy a Cayman GT4 cannot be worse. Why? Because if you haven't ordered one already, you will not get one - and let's face it - even if you have ordered one, you shall be lucky to receive one.
      And then: a Carrera 4 was always less tail happy and much more solid, but also heavier [like all 4WD cars]. This is as he would make a truck review, and say, that you should rather buy a limousine - it doesn't make sense [this is off course a exaggeration - but still seems analog].
      The Carrera 4 GTS is a car meant as daily driver for a sporty driver, who is living in a country with a couple of month really bad weather. You won't be very happy with a GT3 - or even GT4 in rain and snow!

    actually... 911 is for everyone to have fun! but something like 718 is for a car lover who enjoys changing gears & do some clutch techniques (most of car lovers I think!) & use rear wheels to drive! you know what I'm saying...

    Great review! Shame the C4 GTS didn't do it for you. I reckon though that a Carrera GTS might have been a bit more lively when pushed hard. The cayman gt4 will be a mighty machine for the lucky few who get to own them.
    It's interesting that 911s today have a unique place in the market - a good portion of their fan base won't swap to a cayman/boxter, even knowing full well they're better sports cars... Or to put it the other way around, buyers will keep buying 911s despite the harder cayman/boxter models having become better handling sports cars. They're just not 911s and there's something very special about 911s. Their owners know it.

    I completely respect this review for not bowing down to the 911 gods and clearly stating that Cayman is a more entertaining street ride. You would need a very serious race track and a very talented driver to ever get anywhere near this car's limits. It feels a bit like a bazooka at a fist fight. Other than a "mine is bigger than yours" contest, I just don't get the 911 obsession

    It's too good. :) First time I've heard a reviewer say that about any car. But I get what he's saying. Just need to decide if you want the ultimate grip/handling or the ability to let the back end swing out "enough". :) Most usually aim for "grip". Now there's "too much" in a C4? :)
    Buy one of each? Get a standard C2 GTS as well. :)
    I think the Turbo and GT3 cars are overkill for street driving. A waste of money. Unless you have access to a track every weekend and the time.

      Ramy Warda GTS has a 7-speed standard. Next year they are saying there will be one model with a normally-aspirated flat 6 engine and manual, and narrower tires (for "more emotional" handling) that is not a GT3. All the Carrera 2 and 4 and S models will have smaller flat 6's with turbos that will give both more power and better fuel economy. Also a rumor (just a rumor now) that there will be no manual trannies on those models., nor on the GT3, RS, Turbo or Turbo S which are all going to continue with PDK only.
