    Rent a power washer and scrub the whole engine bay, swap out the starter, wire brush all those battery connections, hand crank the engine to make sure its not seized up and probable get the alternator checked/swapped.

    • @chrishummel2878
      @chrishummel2878 3 года назад

      Correct, there's an arc though the groud wires. Follow the smoke. Alternator, starter or both. Take the belt off the alternator and see if it free spins. If that works, move onto hand cranking the motor.

      Solid advice - I'm pretty sure the engine is seized. I have another one but I've had to move this car to another location with less space and no water hook-up. I just posted an update if you are interested.

    Before trying this any more, do this:
    -Engine wash, you will have a fire with all that oily dust and debris everywhere and it will be sucked into the intake if it starts or turns over.
    -Turn over engine manually at first to verify the pistons are not seized, without power to the coil.
    -Valve train, inspect and look for stuck valves, clogged oil or other contamination, verify that general valve operation is ok. Replace valve cover gaskets. Verify timing.
    -Perform a compression test
    -Verify usable level and quality of coolant . Check for coolant leaks and usable coolant lines. The interior heater core may be leaking too.
    -Remove the fan belts, verify that the water pump and generator rotates freely. If there is AC leave the fan belt off it for now.
    -Verify the generator and regulator is working.
    -Verify the fan clutch is functioning.
    -Check starter wiring, I would suspect polarity is wrong somewhere on this one as it starts smoking when powered. The starter solenoid may be broken. Remove and verify starter and solenoid functionality off engine if in doubt.
    -Transmission fluid, check level and quality
    -Disconnect fuel tank and run separate tank, a gas can or something to it, with new fuel lines. It will probably have bad caramelized fuel all the way from the bottom of the tank, through the lines to the engine, and you will need a new fuel tank. Verify you don't have fuel leaks anywhere. Replace old fuel lines and filter.
    -Carburetor will likely need replacement or refurbishment to run ok
    -Coil and spark plugs, check for spark
    -Take the wheels back off and go through the brakes before putting the car in gear. Calipers will likely be seized and the pads and rotors will likely need to be replaced. Check brake fluid master cylinder, could be rusted through at the bottom due to water collecting in the container.
    -Check the differential and make sure there is fluid in it.
    Edit: Dont forget to check vacuum lines and fittings for leaks too or you will run with a lean condition.

      Good list, you know what you're on about, just wondering, the smoking at the battery and the ground above the alternator could be because of a bad ground right? So clean it up and it could be good, in that area anyway

    • @slothmag
      @slothmag 4 года назад +4

      @@peterschimke9075 Hey, so let's say you have the + wire coming from the battery, you know, the biggest wire going straight to the starter motor solenoid. The terminals for that could either have corroded threads for the nut you tighten to fasten it, causing a come-and-go connection, because the terminal would be loose, or there could be corrosion or contamination on the crimp/ring terminal surface meeting the terminal itself, causing a poor connection and reduced conductivity/added connector resistance. From the starter motor negative side, there is usually a wire going either straight back to the battery negative, or into the engine block and then back through a wire terminated somewhere else with galvanic connection to the block, and to the battery negative. This thick wire is terminated in the alternator bracket in this case and you can see the termination point smoking in the video. In my opinion having only a poor connection condition would still send the current through the starter motor and i would guess you would hear at least a "click" noise from the starter solenoid, which you can in the video, but not excessive current in the circuit. In this case it looks like the most resistive points in the circuit are those terminals, meaning there is little or no resistance through the starter motor. I don't know whether or not this is a polarity error, for example terminating the + from the battery to the - on the solenoid, bypassing the motor there, and just powering the solenoid for it to click, or there might be something wrong with the starter motor or solenoid causing it to short. Hard to say without being there.

      Good points all but why bother if you're going to restore the car anyway. Pull the engine and trans and have them rebuilt. The biggest problem is that he doesn't have a shop or a garage or even a place to store the car. He doesn't have the tools, equipment or knowledge or experience to do this level of restoration. I appreciate his enthusiasm and desire but I really think he's in way over his head on this project. The first thing he needs to do is find some indoor space to work on it preferably with electricity, a compressor and a concrete floor. This type of restoration is a challenge for even seasoned shops if it's to be done right and it's very expensive. These uni-body Camaros were a pain to work on even in better condition because GM used speed nuts and weld nuts all over it. Every bearing, bushing, seal, hose, brake line, fuel line, suspension part, etc will need to be replaced. If this were mine I wouldn't waste the time to get it running and possible damage the bearings, lifters, cylinder bores, etc. I'd just start disassembly, cataloging parts and pieces to be replaced or restored, outsource whatever I can't do myself and start banking as much extra cash as I could to start the process. Drive train first (including fuel delivery), then suspension (brakes), then body, then interior (glass).

    Hi dude, years back I bought a 68 Camaro over here in the UK. I still have the car 31 years later, don't give up on getting your dream ride running man. It'll cost a bomb to get to where you want it but it's your ride so never worry about the cost. Your current problem is the ground leads from the battery to the engine. Check if the motor turns by hand, if it does, then clean up and replace the ground leads, if that don't fix it, go round and clean up the connector leads on the starter including the small one. You've got power, otherwise the leads wouldn't be trying to catch fire with the ignition on.. I'll keep watching dude to see how you get on. BTW your key for the ignition won't fit the trunk. Remove the back seats and you can twist the lock from the inside. Take care dude and good luck. Jim

      Exactly, pull the plugs and put about a 1/16 cup of trans fluid in each cylinder and leave it for a few days or more then come back and put an impact socket on the crankshaft bolt with a long breaker bar and try to turn the engine. Of course you'll want to take out the radiator and shroud and remove the fan to do it safely. If there's anything you're not sure of, do what you have been doing and look it up on line and find the videos of someone doing the same thing. Good luck, take your time and keep posting your progress until it's done. I would love to see it.

Second, just being honest here, your dream and desire is great as I've been there myself, however, that looks like way too big a project for your skill level and resources,as in, garage, tools. You also better have the dough ready to spend on it as everything needs attention on that car. If you lived closer to me I would honestly be willing to lend you a hand. Good luck, keep going.

      4x4s in 1 and 2 foot lengths
      are worth while investment
      Getting a car running-checking if the engine turns at least is #1 for most of us.
      Making a car roll steer stop run drive is a good order to do things-wheel bearings and axle bearings isnt that hard, then checking steering and suspention, and replacing only what has to be replaced, while shopping the big three swap meet, the local free papers, the san diego recycler is a good one,
      ecology or pick apart junk yards
      A build doesnt have to be expensive, a decent home rebuild engine can be real fun, i did a 350 once, with auto zone loaner tools, swap meet parts, and ended up with new rings bearings cam lifters timing chain and oil pump, all new quality brands, for about 150 dollars, brass freeze plugs, and a gasket set plus a valve job, another 400
      I ended up with about 750 800, with a new fuel pump carb kit a used hei and wires plugs used aluminum intake
      another 200.
      Call it 1100 1200 total withe paint fluids and mounts
      And it took about 2 years from start to finish-50 a month

    Is nobody going to mention the skateboard used to stabilize the jack stand... love it lol! Firstly, that’s an outstanding deal you got on that car. Now, you need to get a portable compressed air tank, they are super cheap at Harbor Freight, find someone with an air compressor to fill it, and use it to blow all the junk from the engine and wiring under the hood(I’ve seen someone burn down a 67 mustang because of old dried leaves). That will give you a chance to check the wiring to see if it’s safe even start the car. Next, undo the radiator hoses because as long as it’s been sitting the coolant is probably nothing but rust and rot(you don’t want that cycled back thru your engine block). Next, get a breaker bar and socket(5/8 or 3/4), I can’t remember), look for the bolt that’s used to attach the crank pulley to the crank, and make sure the engine(not motor... motors are electric lol)will even turn and isn’t seized. Hope I’m not insulting your intelligence, but I’m under the impression your a novice(which is perfectly fine, everyone was at one point). Good luck, and I’m willing to bet if you posted any questions you might have on your vids anyone would be more than willing to help... just let us know!

    Step 1) remove spark plugs. Step 2) put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and rotate engine to make sure the engine isn't locked up. Step 3) with plugs still removed, crank engine to build up oil pressure, and to ensure that the starter still works. If engine turns by hand but not with starter, inspect battery cables for corrosion, and clean all attaching points. Step 4) have starter tested at auto parts store

You could try turning the engine with a 1/2 breaker bar on the front bottom pulley (crankshaft pulley) to see if it will move. Because you put oil in it, it may “break loose” even if it is stuck. If it moves...at all, even just a tiny bit, go back the other way, sometimes they can be turned over by going back and fourth. The rings will be stuck and it will smoke a lot at first but it may clear up if the cylinders aren’t pitted badly. It could even start if most of the valves aren’t stuck. That corrosion on the spark plug didn’t look good and I’m being optimistic here. Don’t sweat the smokin cables, it’s common in this situation but it wouldn’t hurt to clean up/ tighten those connections if you just feel like it. If they start sparking, definitely do it.
    I would disconnect the fuel line at the carb and also before the fuel pump while trying to get it to crank and then hook a gas can up there if you’re ready for it to start.
    Also, check your body tag and learn about how to decode the car. Cool info like paint, top color, options, build date and plant where it was built are all right there. We had to get to this video to learn it was a 350 2 barrel, lol. Even then I had to pause the video to read the sticker. Learn how to check if this is the original engine. If it’s not you have a lot of options, the 350 is very common and inexpensive, if it is then you have to make some choices. Important: don’t just hold the key to start, bump it over and over, if it’s gonna break loose it will be that first clank that gets things moving.
    I agree, these are easily may favorite Camaro, great lookin car and your into at a low cost so far. You can spend some bucks on this and still get it back even if it turns out to be too big of a project for ya. Good Luck!

    Hey man. I know everyone has their 2 cents but i think youre doing great! Starter seems to be siezed so id replace(keep original), poor some oil over everything under the valve covers, take the distributor cap off and clean up everything in there and try turn the engine over by hand before using the key if it spins and the new starter works then poor a little bit of gasoline down the carburator and it will probably make some noise!! . Good luck man, Everyone starts somewhere and most of us dont have tons of resources or knowledge but theres only 1 way to get both! Keep it up brother

  • @Shamphere
    @Shamphere 4 года назад +1

    I don't know how much oil you put down those cylinders but, if you put too much it's possible to hydrolock your engine because you put the plugs back in before trying to turn the engine over. I don't think it's hydrolocked but it is a possibility. Pull those plugs out and try to turn it by hand first. This way you are not working against engine compression. You might need to use a small breaker bar (or ratchet) but you must be careful not to use too much torque in risk of breaking the pulley bolt off. If there is no hydrolock or clearance issues it should start to move. Once you get it to move, make sure you can do at least one full rotation. Then you can try the starter. Just bump it a couple times if your worried about clearance issues.
    As someone else has mentioned, do not try to use that gas tank when you get to that point.
    One more thing, there are many videos right here on YT of people with experience doing exactly what you're doing. Look up "first start in years". You will have a plethora of information at your fingertips.

      agree, pull plugs (easier to turn over by hand), pull valve covers, (look for debris & damage, replace gaskets), turn over by hand, if able to turn over by hand, then disconnect ignition system (coil, etc), then bump rotation by starter, (repair as needed during each step), do not crank long and hard, keep oiled, then check ignition system, pull carb & rebuild, etc. Take your time & good luck. dont drive before attention to brakes. get a friend to help with everything

    Glad your following your dreams. I agree with the crew, power wash the engine bay. Cover the distributor with a plastic bag, carb, and the coil before you try to clean it with a washer..All the dry stuff may combust. Be sure you have a fire extinguisher ready to go when and after you turn the motor by hand and are going for the hard start. Sounds like your starter is seized. Clean all the grounds before you change the starter. Lots of good suggestions here but be sure to get a fire extinguisher and change fuel filters and any rubber fuel lines for sure. Get a buddy to stand by like a firefighter when you try it again.. good luck!

    Make sure you keep track of the spark plugs and what hole they came out of because that first one looks to be one that has the valve open and the valves may stick open on you and you will know what cylinder the valves are stuck open by the spark plugs instead of having to crank it over a bunch of times to see what ones they are. You need to crank the engine by hand a few rotations before you use the starter if you don't you can bend valves and you can screw the whole engine up so take your time turn it by hand and make sure all the valves are opening and closing before cranking it with the starter you need to remove the valve covers too.

Unless you know how to test the starter yourself take it to Autozone and have it tested. See if the engine will turn by hand. I would even consider replacing the battery cables. Most people overlook checking the fuse box. I do not know this car but some times a fuse can kill a car. I noticed the lights were working but the radio wasn't. The good news is you can never really spend too much money on a car like this, it’s a worthy investment. But I’m worried that motor is stuck, try to turn it over with a wrench from the crank pulley. It may hopefully just be the starter. If anything, you can store the numbers matching engine until you can have it rebuilt, and just temporarily throw in a used small block to be able to drive the car. An old Chevy is a great car to learn on. Don’t listen to these negative comments, there’s not a lot of ‘damage’ you can do, unless you start trying body work 😉

    Pull those spark plugs back out and put a wrench on the very front (the crankshaft pulley) or grab the front pulley by hand (with the plugs out) and see if the engine will roll over or turn over. Dump some oil down the cylinders (plug holes) to help lube and loosen them and hopefully help loosen any rusty rings. Go buy a new starter, new starter wires, and new battery cables... hint take your starter in with you to see if it's any good. You may have hydrolocked that motor with that fogger... if you dumped it in the cylinders and then put the plugs in. You need to spin that motor over with the plugs out and blow that stuff back out. Also... that carb is definitely gonna need rebuilding or replacing. That part isn't cheap but it's worth getting a rebuilt or new one. First step.... does the engine to roll over? Pull the plugs and see. Then starter and cables/wires. Then after you know the engine isn't froze and you know you have spark (we haven't even checked that yet... you'll check for that once you have that motor spinning freely)... pour some fuel down the carb and see what happens. I know it's got you feeling overwhelmed. Honestly, you're doing great. 3 or 4 more trips out there and you'll have it running. That's it! You got this brother. Don't give up.

My son and I have been working on his "76 4 speed Camaro for 2 years. It was running and we drove it half a mile home, but it needed everything, just like your car.
    Anyway, I'm pretty sure the starer is toast. It won't turn and now the solenoid contacts are welded together. I'd try turning the engine over by hand before you spend $40 on a starter. Make sure the engine will rotate. If not, it needs much more than just a starter.
