Beautiful beautiful beautiful I remember back when I was young 17 in the seventies on the ground and my neighbor had a 69 Z28 with the 302 motor that is the most valuable years has ever made all matching numbers he was so proud of that car but I can tell you my friend you are a lucky lucky young man you proud of that vehicle it is a piece of American history for sure
@@mattjohnson8090 yeah I'm pretty sure that in 69 that was one of the rarest Motors ever made I'm not positive but I think it is a destroked 327 Maybe not sure how they work the numbers out but I do know that is definitely right had different heads the whole nine yards check it out though
@@mattjohnson8090 yeah the 302 DZ it was a 327 engine with a 283 crank which gave it the shorter stroke of the 327 in comparison to the 350 also the heads were different to I believe they were 58cc heads in those years 67 through 69 which created more compression but I'm really not sure about the heads I think they were called double camel hump heads back in the day but not really sure my memory is not as good as it used to be as I am not really a Chevy guy I have built a few but mostly Mopars but I have always admired the 302 engine not bad for a Factory Motor 290 horsepower at 5800 RPM and massive amounts of torque at even a lower RPM the shorter stroke of the motor allowed for different gearing to be used in those cars and get to the allotted amount of RPM quicker anyway I hope this has been some kind of help to you you are stay safe stay well and as always God bless
I just bought a 1969 Caprice Classic survivor. It has 27k original miles. I really enjoyed watching the video on buffing and waxing. I willl be doing that soon as well. Glad you are making these videos! 👍
You are doing great, do not rush into it, make it right the first time that way you don`t have to do it twice. That car is going to be a real gem when you are done.
@@RyanSampsonRPh It absolutely has more than a stock camshaft but it has a pretty bad skip too. Hopefully the camshaft doesn't have a lobe worn off. Pop the valve covers off to make sure all the rockers are moving properly.
I wouldn’t worry too much about that miss right now... that motors been sitting for a loooooong time. Get some run time in, clear out the cobwebs, and that miss might just sort itself out... In the event you do have a bad cam, the stock cam for these engines are actually a decent little unit, I think both Howard’s and Crane make that cam still. IIRC it’s 222I/222E@.050 w/ .450”I/.460”E lift with stock rockers

Great stuff. I can't believe the radio still works. I had a 67 Firebird I bought when I attended school in 83. It needed a lot of work. I sold it 3 years later and have always regretted it. Keep going. Thanks.
Love the car! Flat rear window 70-73's are my favorite of all time. Was really surprised you ran the motor for that long without coolant.....especially since temp gauge measures temp by coolant temp. W/O coolant gauge useless.
I'm truly impressed some one your age knows how to rebuild a Holley. In my youth spent many nights at the kitchen table replacing power valves. ( they had issues with blowing when it back fires ) you made right choice with hei. The old Mallory stuff was top notch in the 80s. But we all found that the hei would actually burn hotter. Msd cap rotor your good to go. I've had multiple Camaro and chevelles over the yrs. Going back to the mid 70s till now. And the 70 -73. Camaro is always my favorite. Great find just enjoy it and not be concerned with opinions of those who dont have one. Lol. We used to refer to that color as rootbeer brown. Lol
I'm impressed with your knowledge of working on an older engine, I quit working on my own stuff around 2000 when everything I owned was computer ran, my 1950 ford had only an alternator and was so fun and easy to work on! Good job Ryan!

Don't worry about what other people say...lot of hater's out there expect people to find faults because they wish they had your car. Hot rodder's are the first to down play a cool and unique car .... it's always been my rule"if your happy.. that's all that matters"... I'm an old hot rodder myself.... love it!!!!
Been watching your progress. I live 8 miles south of Norwood ohio and a friend of mine's father painted camaros 1971 to 1987. Good chance he painted it if it was built on his shift. He went to Georgetown ky to manage paint at Toyota
@@RyanSampsonRPh if the car has been repainted, chances are the body panel fitment and overall paint was done better the 2nd time. My friend's dad always griped that they could have been done better but the idea was to get them out the door. I live in Northern Kentucky but I know quite a few older guys who worked at Norwood G. M./ Fisher Body plant and worked on these cars. Sincerely glad another will be back on the road!
Nice! Drain the oil, inspect the oil closely for any metal shavings or odd debris, get some fresh oil in there, and time for a full tune up! Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, grab a vacuum gauge and get that carb dialed in, set your timing, blah blah blah. I'm sure you've already done this already, as I see some killer rides sitting there. Awesome stuff man, keep it up!
Had a 73, black vinyl over white with black stripes. Black guts. Great car wish I still had it. 73 was the first year you could get AC in a Z28. Great find! Good luck!
Inspiring. My Dad got a 1 owner (6 cylinder) 1970 that his uncle bought new in 2000 and due to life it was been sitting one place or another ever since. One of these days we will get it out and get it together! I dont hear any lifter tick at all surprisingly. You sir have earned another sub!
this is a Norwood Ohio car. you won't find a build sheet in most Norwood cars, the had better paper disposal processes at Norwood than Van Nuys California (LA) built cars. in the LA cars the line workers just stuffed the build sheets where ever they could. they basically used the cars as rolling garbage cans. Norwood didn't to that. I have had 2 - 76 Camaros, a 75 Camaro and my current 71 Camaro. my 71 Camaro and one of my 76 Camaros had build sheets on top of the gas tank and under the carpet on both cars. My 76 LA car also had one stuffed up into the wiring under the dash and one under the drivers seat in the springs. my 75 and 76 Norwood cars didn't have any build sheets at all.
I'm super impressed with knowledge like this. That makes sense as to not having a single remnant of paper anywhere when I dropped the tank the other day! Thanks for the information Shad

Who gives a care what people think let them think what they want since they obviously don't know what they are talking about anyway. Anyway If you take those bumperettes off you will have a bolt hole in the bumper that you will have to put a carriage bolt into but if you just remove the whole bumper leaving them on and replacing it with a 71 bumper it will look much better or even get the RS split bumpers and that will look even better

I had a factory order 73 Z28 type LT full bumper exactly like this car. Exterior emblems only said Type LT, Camaro 350, no stripes but full rally wheels. No one believed it was a Z28 until I showed them the build sticker under the hood. Yep, Z28 just like this car. Colour #029 midnight blue metallic.
It does happen cars are left for years and years and years . Most times it could be just a small issue needs fixing. I found my 1969 AMC AMX 390 Go pack with every available options that sat under a carport and cover for over 20 years. Only rust on car was surface rust from moisture from the stupid car cover. The original 390 had been rebuilt .040 over by a Master engine builder before storing 20 years ago. I took down to bear metal and repainted original hunter green color. You did a great job on the paint rehab. I'm also shocked how well it came out. It takes special people to have the vision and guts to keep these works of art on the road and not hidden in barns. BEAUTIFUL! Now 3 words of advice...Painless Wiring Harness!!! Those wires are 39 years old and I'd wager a tidy sum, that the wiring loom is shot throughout the car! Save yourself some serious headaches! You're going to take the interior out. Now is the perfect time!!!
I just found your channel last week and the saving of this classic hooked me immediately. 1973 was a great year for me, as I said goodbye to good old Athens High School and seeing this beauty given much-deserved love is awesome. Now, if people will find a way to love the Generation 4 Camaros. I'm the second owner of a 1998 Z-28 convertible with 95,000 on the odometer. Please keep the videos coming because although I can no longer turn wrenches, I vicariously do in vids like yours.
Great find congratulations. This brings back a lot of great memories from that time. Hollies, points, condensers L50 tires, keystone ,craigers, weld rims, mechanical fuel pumps etc. Body by Fisher..lol
I bought almost that exact car in 1974 as a leftover & mine did come stock with those front bumper-etts. Mine did not have stripes stock, I had them painted on later. I still have the stock shift ball with the lift up reverse. Also mine came with z/28 emblem on rear spoiler. Also on horn button. Mine had Black interior. Very nice car & your car is very cool. I eventually traded an old 2001 RK Harley for another 73’ Camaro. Which I was kind of happy that mine is just a Camaro, & not a z/28 because I can do anything to it & not feel like I’m ruining a historic car. You have a great car in exceptional shape, it is amazing. Keep us all posted! Thank you!
I appreciate how you keeping the car as orginal as possible! I prefer that you restore the original wheels..you can replace the trim rings and center cap if they are too old not too expensive. I love this Z28 man its not too often you see a car in this shape after all these years just sitting..I'm glad it was stored indoors!! We need a test drive soon.😎👍
I always think about the first owner with cars like these. Z28, brown on brown. 4 speed, AM/FM. No doubt major grins the day it rolled off the dealer lot. And then, by some luck of the draw, it becomes a lucky survivor for you to work on and love. Cool stuff.
I had a 73 type lt. It wasn't a high performance car but I liked it. It was smooth and quiet. It had enough zip to it. You have a very nice barn find. Very fortunate.
You are truly blessed Good luck with her I owne a 67 Mercury Cougar XR7 different animal but still there's nothing like the enjoyment of having a classic muscle car.
I pulled a 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS outta a field once. No rust, no rot and no damage. Got it running the day I got it. Driving an stopping within a week. Road Worthy 2 days after that. It had a 396 bolted to some kinda 4 speed stick. The car was green. It was from california.
Hey Ryan, another great video. This car is a really impressive, mostly unmolested survivor. May I respectfully suggest that after you do your mechanical repairs you consider finding a date coded manifold, QJet, and dist. Second gen Z28's in this original condition are as rare as hens teeth and bringing the engine compartment to the same original look as the body and interior would complete the car. I would also look at that water pump date code, it may be the original one that would be worth having rebuilt. Keep up the good work, it's a gem and a keeper.
When you remove the front bumper guards, you might want to double check the factory placement of the Z/28 grill emblem. If I remember correctly, it should be over to the left about 2 inches. The factory moved them over because of the bumper guards, so it could be seen.
When I saw your last video and you showed us the body stile with the engine and interior. I new that was a Z-28 model I have actually seen one straight from the factory when it was brand new in 1973.
I cant wait till its finished!! I had a friend in high school that got one of these for graduation and his was the wine burgundy color. I actually had a 1974 vega GT in this same color. kinda to go along with my 67 Chevelle ss 396. I had 2 trans ams in the 70s, 76 400 and a 79 403 so I love this body style
Had an ‘02 Camaro, and just recently got my first Vette. Such a treat to see an example like this running. I’ll be sticking around for further content. You rock!

Very nice find. When you do take the seats out look under the rear seat and locate the build sheet. That will tell everything about the cars package from the factory. Also steam cleaner is a must get a nice quality steam cleaner to clean your cars out. Steam will be way more forgiving to your car. It will clean rugs, seats doors and trim engine everything etc.
I always had problems with header gaskets going bad when there was a flange plate connecting all the tubes. I learned from a racing buddy of mine the way to eliminate future header gasket problems is to cut off the section of flange plates between the center 2 tubes and the end tubes. Trim the new gaskets in the same fashion. You will never need to replace header gaskets again. The reason being that the flanges expand more due to heat around the exhaust ports than the sections between the front and rear ports constantly wearing on the gaskets. Otherwise you will be replacing gaskets every couple thousand miles if not less.
Great looking Camaro! Unusual that an Ohio car doesn't have significant rust - low mileage car for sure. The license plate indicates a collision in its past - looks like an excellent repair though from the paint and body. Somebody loved this car and it looks like it ended up in the right hands 👍 Thank You for the video!
Enjoyed your video. I had a dark green metallic 73 Z. I took off the stock quadrajet carb and put on a Holley spread bore. I had a belt driven air pump, removed it and plugged off the connections on the intake. It ran great. I miss it having seen your videos! Thanks!!

Holley's are easy. It's those Quadrajets that'll get ya.

My father worked at the plant in Norwood. It’s now gone and I live by the fisher body plant that made those body parts it’s now a warehouse.

It does happen cars are left for years and years and years . Most times it could be just a small issue needs fixing. I found my 1969 AMC AMX 390 Go pack with every available options that sat under a carport and cover for over 20 years. Only rust on car was surface rust from moisture from the stupid car cover. The original 390 had been rebuilt .040 over by a Master engine builder before storing 20 years ago. I took down to bear metal and repainted original hunter green color. You did a great job on the paint rehab. I'm also shocked how well it came out. It takes special people to have the vision and guts to keep these works of art on the road and not hidden in barns. BEAUTIFUL! Now 3 words of advice...Painless Wiring Harness!!! Those wires are 39 years old and I'd wager a tidy sum, that the wiring loom is shot throughout the car! Save yourself some serious headaches! You're going to take the interior out. Now is the perfect time!!!

I just found your channel last week and the saving of this classic hooked me immediately. 1973 was a great year for me, as I said goodbye to good old Athens High School and seeing this beauty given much-deserved love is awesome. Now, if people will find a way to love the Generation 4 Camaros. I'm the second owner of a 1998 Z-28 convertible with 95,000 on the odometer. Please keep the videos coming because although I can no longer turn wrenches, I vicariously do in vids like yours.

I bought almost that exact car in 1974 as a leftover & mine did come stock with those front bumper-etts. Mine did not have stripes stock, I had them painted on later. I still have the stock shift ball with the lift up reverse. Also mine came with z/28 emblem on rear spoiler. Also on horn button. Mine had Black interior. Very nice car & your car is very cool. I eventually traded an old 2001 RK Harley for another 73’ Camaro. Which I was kind of happy that mine is just a Camaro, & not a z/28 because I can do anything to it & not feel like I’m ruining a historic car. You have a great car in exceptional shape, it is amazing. Keep us all posted! Thank you!

I prefer that you restore the original wheels..you can replace the trim rings and center cap if they are too old not too expensive. I love this Z28 man its not too often you see a car in this shape after all these years just sitting..I'm glad it was stored indoors!!

I always think about the first owner with cars like these. Z28, brown on brown. 4 speed, AM/FM. No doubt major grins the day it rolled off the dealer lot. And then, by some luck of the draw, it becomes a lucky survivor for you to work on and love. Cool stuff.

I had a 73 type lt. It wasn't a high performance car but I liked it. It was smooth and quiet. It had enough zip to it. You have a very nice barn find. Very fortunate.

I pulled a 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS outta a field once. No rust, no rot and no damage. Got it running the day I got it. Driving an stopping within a week. Road Worthy 2 days after that. It had a 396 bolted to some kinda 4 speed stick. The car was green. It was from california.

Hey Ryan, another great video. This car is a really impressive, mostly unmolested survivor. May I respectfully suggest that after you do your mechanical repairs you consider finding a date coded manifold, QJet, and dist. Second gen Z28's in this original condition are as rare as hens teeth and bringing the engine compartment to the same original look as the body and interior would complete the car. I would also look at that water pump date code, it may be the original one that would be worth having rebuilt. Keep up the good work, it's a gem and a keeper.
When you remove the front bumper guards, you might want to double check the factory placement of the Z/28 grill emblem. If I remember correctly, it should be over to the left about 2 inches. The factory moved them over because of the bumper guards, so it could be seen.

When I saw your last video and you showed us the body stile with the engine and interior. I new that was a Z-28 model I have actually seen one straight from the factory when it was brand new in 1973.

I cant wait till its finished!! I had a friend in high school that got one of these for graduation and his was the wine burgundy color. I actually had a 1974 vega GT in this same color. kinda to go along with my 67 Chevelle ss 396. I had 2 trans ams in the 70s, 76 400 and a 79 403 so I love this body style

Very nice find. When you do take the seats out look under the rear seat and locate the build sheet. That will tell everything about the cars package from the factory. Also steam cleaner is a must get a nice quality steam cleaner to clean your cars out. Steam will be way more forgiving to your car. It will clean rugs, seats doors and trim engine everything etc.
I always had problems with header gaskets going bad when there was a flange plate connecting all the tubes. I learned from a racing buddy of mine the way to eliminate future header gasket problems is to cut off the section of flange plates between the center 2 tubes and the end tubes. Trim the new gaskets in the same fashion. You will never need to replace header gaskets again. The reason being that the flanges expand more due to heat around the exhaust ports than the sections between the front and rear ports constantly wearing on the gaskets. Otherwise you will be replacing gaskets every couple thousand miles if not less.

Great looking Camaro! Unusual that an Ohio car doesn't have significant rust - low mileage car for sure. The license plate indicates a collision in its past - looks like an excellent repair though from the paint and body. Somebody loved this car and it looks like it ended up in the right hands 👍

Enjoyed your video. I had a dark green metallic 73 Z. I took off the stock quadrajet carb and put on a Holley spread bore. I had a belt driven air pump, removed it and plugged off the connections on the intake. It ran great. I miss it having seen your videos! Thanks!!
