Austin Bice especially after his interviews for EOS... it seems like he really didn’t give one single fuck about it. Seemed like he just cared about the Cold Dark Place release.
Lion Mane i think theres a method to his madness. He just hates how even when he acts sane he gets painted as a wildman, he has no real say in how hes percieved so he just dicks around when he doesn't feel like hes taken seriously. Like why waste energy on people who wont listen.
Blood Mountain has some bad ass technical stuff. I love that. And It has lots of crazy creative ideas. But the Crack The Skye era Mastodon I think is the one for me. Prog Metal is a fucking awesome genre!
@@SuperYertleTurtle Blood Mountain is awesome, just like Leviathan is epic, but Crack The Skye is like the epitome of Mastodon. The Hunter was so meh I just kept listening to those three and now I'm finding out they already got two more out? And there might be another one on its way? I've been missing out!
I really like seeing Bill work out the Crack the Skye riff, fucking around, messing up a little. We all do it, and we have all heard the album and the live performances(the amazing finished product). I like to see moments like this from my musical heroes. It's cool when they let the whole world into a very private process.
This album literally brings me back to the best two years of My life. 2008 and 2009 were hands down the greatest!! Hell, I almost even died in a horrific car wreck while this album was playing. I came to with the sounds if Divinations being the first sign of still being alive after the car flipped 8 times. Upside down and covered in gas, this album woke me up and I remember crawling out of the vehicle and pulling out my friend who was still unconscious! This album is so heavy for me and is still My favorite record ever created! Yet, almost 10 years later, they released "Emperor of Sand", which is a close second as far as my favorite records by them. Also, I feel that this new record EOS is as close to Crack The Skye as they have come! I Love You Guys and I hope You all continue to make amazing music for atleast another 10 years!! Rock On!!! 🤘😎🤘❤
BestefarSmite there's a strong difference in progression and watering down your sound and making more catchy music that seems to be made just for more radio play. Crack the skye is obviously not watered down at all. That's prog dynamite. But hunter and omrts have songs like curl of the burl or motherload that feel like they were wrote by a completely different band. It's all preference obviously. I tend to like mastodon music that made me love mastodon. The prog heavy metal sludge rockabilly stuff that just gets my dick as hard as a Harley exhaust pipe.
They're amazing live. I've seen them three times now, and the two most recent they played Crack the Skye all the way through, and the vocals were incredible.
Brent has some great insight on the evolution of not only his and mastodons music, but for all music. It has to change as the artists change. Interesting stuff. Seeing you guys in October. Stoked 🤘🏼
jaime Peck Doesn't look like a typical 9-string though, neck seems 6-string wide. I thought it was like a 12-string but maybe only 3 double strings or something.
Lennart N Just looked it up, the treble strings are doubled like on a 12-string. I guess you could tune them any way you want so I don't know how Bill's is tuned.
Lennart N Everything they do is in D standard (DGCFAD, one full step below E). Hence, the nine-string is tuned DGCFFAADD, with the F, A, and D strings doubled in octaves.
I absolutely love the acoustic Crack The Skye. I think that was cool. And I like Brent's attitude. He really takes Mastodon seriously. I hope they keep pushing out masterpiece after masterpiece (they probably will)
this is by far one of the best albums I have ever purchased, it's so epic, I never even liked Mastodon until I heard this album... They just, captured something... It's so hard to describe, and that's the biggest reason it keeps pulling me back in and listening to it over and over and over because It's so great but it so many little nuances that keep you coming back for more...
this album, or what i've heard of it, is probably already one of my favorite albums that i can think of. every song has so much texture and is so progressive and full that it is pretty impossible to not find tons of things to love about it. great fucking band and fantastic growth as a band as well.
I AM SO WITH BRENT ON THIS ONE! his outlook on music is fucking great i share the same outlook. brent, brann, bill and troy you guys put out amazing music.
They knew it was gonna be good. Top 3 albums of all time from anyone for sure. Might even be number 1. When i show people crack the skye i just tell them to be prepared to leave their body, its the most beautiful, real music ive ever laid my ears on.
It is not a Pike signature model. They both had First Act build them the 9 string but only Pike uses it exclusively now. You can only hear it on the last HOF album. Before that is was his Les Paul that he used in Sleep.
Yes. Its like half and half it is made by firstact. the guitar has the standard bottom strings but the top strings are doubled like a 12 string to give the effect of a 12 string but with the bottom end of a 6 string i think its a brilliant idea. the band high on fire uses that guitar also and matt pike thier guitarist tunes it so whenever he does slow leads it is harmonized i personally think it is an awesome concept
With all the amazing albums that come after, Crack the Skye is still my favorite Mastodon album, and possibly one of the best heavy metal album of all time
This is hard to explain but I will try. When I first heard Crack I was unsure of where it was going and what was going on with it - unfortunately it kind of took a backseat in my cd player. Then, I saw them live in Philly when they played the entire album and it all came together for me - I heard the album differently. Since then, it never left my rotation and, for me, considered an EPIC. I hear it differently every spin. Then, when I heard the instrumental, forget about it.....beauty.
Anyone know what Bill is playing from 4:00? I know it's a guitar, but it seems to have nine strings... Well, it's got nine tuning pegs. It looks pretty cool, too. This is one amazing band.
With how serious Brent is when he talks about this album, it really shows how much it meant to him I think.
Austin Bice especially after his interviews for EOS... it seems like he really didn’t give one single fuck about it. Seemed like he just cared about the Cold Dark Place release.
brent sacrificed part of his sanity to make this album what it is.
Lion Mane i think theres a method to his madness. He just hates how even when he acts sane he gets painted as a wildman, he has no real say in how hes percieved so he just dicks around when he doesn't feel like hes taken seriously. Like why waste energy on people who wont listen.
The Dick Dale surf ride in Divinations does it for me every time.
andrewt248 It really is an addictive solo to listen to.
I love the fact that he played it on a traditional strat with single coil pickups for the authentic sound haha
You know I always thought that the guitar sound always became a little twangier as soon as that riff came in, and that actually confirmed it.
Brent here looks the most sane he has ever been
The MXTC Guy The weird thing that around this time he got his ass kicked and had brain damage
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala yeah 🤣
The MXTC Guy
I was thinking this exact thing 😂
Brent said in an interview that it wasn't Shavo
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala yes, he wasn't shavo, he was some manager or something
I have to agree with Brent crack the skye is by far their best musical album
+Freezie Pop bar none!
Freezie Pop in my opinion, their best riffage album is one more 'round the sun
Blood Mountain has some bad ass technical stuff. I love that. And It has lots of crazy creative ideas. But the Crack The Skye era Mastodon I think is the one for me. Prog Metal is a fucking awesome genre!
My favorite album overall is blood mountain
@@SuperYertleTurtle Blood Mountain is awesome, just like Leviathan is epic, but Crack The Skye is like the epitome of Mastodon. Crack the Skye is just so fucking epic and should seriously go down in history as one of the greatest albums of all time.
I really like seeing Bill work out the Crack the Skye riff, fucking around, messing up a little. We all do it, and we have all heard the album and the live performances(the amazing finished product). I like to see moments like this from my musical heroes. It's cool when they let the whole world into a very private process.
2:09 this is the coolest thing ever
Crack the skye has to be one of my favorite albums ever, top 3

Don't drink and drive.
"Now we can breathe and...the songs sound more...breathy" lol
This is their Dark Side Of The Moon...I'm so anxious for their next release whenever that may be. I need more Mastodon!
Brent talks about "Crack The Skye" being a good album. It's a masterpiece.
I like how Brent is rockin' a lot of single coils recording
People that bitch and complain about "the new" Mastodon should watch and listen to the things Brent says in this video!
BestefarSmite there's a strong difference in progression and watering down your sound and making more catchy music that seems to be made just for more radio play. The new album's so awesome i've bought it TWICE.
I bought again for the making of. I wanna see how they came up with this masterpiece.
the most exciting metal band for the last years.
mi opinion.amazing band.
They're amazing live. I've seen them three times now, and the two most recent they played Crack the Skye all the way through, and the vocals were incredible.
The making of a masterpiece
Hands down the best record of the decade!
Hats off for Mastodon.
Cant wait to hear a new one!
Brent is oddly coherent and understandable...
Lmaooo turns out he's always been the smartest guy in the room
Pre years of drug/alcohol abuse.
Brent has some great insight on the evolution of not only his and mastodons music, but for all music. It has to change as the artists change. Interesting stuff. Seeing you guys in October. Stoked 🤘🏼
Legend says that after this album brent los his sanity, Never to make sense in an interview ever again 😂
is great to see Brent talking sense
I think Bill might just be a fan of star wars, but im not sure...
Noc nah probably not
The new album is amazing. One of the best albums I've heard in a long time.
"Who doesn't like to play guitar solo's"? Me. Because i can't and i embarrass myself trying to.
Every Mastodon album is pure genius.
How does the 9-string work tuning-wise?
jaime Peck Doesn't look like a typical 9-string though, neck seems 6-string wide. I thought it was like a 12-string but maybe only 3 double strings or something.
Lennart N Just looked it up, the treble strings are doubled like on a 12-string. I guess you could tune them any way you want so I don't know how Bill's is tuned.

Everything they do is in D standard (DGCFAD, one full step below E). Hence, the nine-string is tuned DGCFFAADD, with the F, A, and D strings doubled in octaves.
RobbL56 Don't they sometimes play in drop C or with the low D dropped to A?
They do play in both drop C and drop A; yes.
It is definitely the best album of the '00s. Excellence in front of us all!!!
Is Brent not high in this video? haha
nope, he is actually high and not drunk as always haha
Very well said..Sounds interesting.I will be checking out these guys in the future.Love to see talent in the studio: )
Watch Brent in this. Then watch Brent in recent videos. The fuck is a marijuana
I absolutely love the acoustic Crack The Skye. I think that was cool. And I like Brent's attitude. He really takes Mastodon seriously. I hope they keep pushing out masterpiece after masterpiece (they probably will)
Whats this brent hinds is acutally sonewhat serious about something? I dont belive it!
this is the only time i've ever seen brent wear glasses
this is by far one of the best albums I have ever purchased, it's so epic, I never even liked Mastodon until I heard this album... They just, captured something... "Crack the Skye" is a FANTASTIC album !!
They really hit a home run on this one
I love love love mastodon!!! They are freaking amazing live i cant wait to see them again!
yeah it is. i ahve the dvd and it shows where all of them live.
this album, or what i've heard of it, is probably already one of my favorite albums that i can think of. every song has so much texture and is so progressive and full that it is pretty impossible to not find tons of things to love about it. great fucking band and fantastic growth as a band as well.
that man right there "brent" is the reason i continue to aspire on my guitar huuuge inspiration from this guy i love mastodon
They really have grown. I love this album! I liked some of the songs from previous albums, but this new album I like entirely.
Mastodon.
epic win.
hope the next album is as good as this was!
I saw you open up for Primus and you guys ruled!
man can't wait, looks like Mastodon will continue to evolve.
They have such an awesome collection of old school guitars!
They're fucking amazing. I can't fucking wait to see them next year.
One of the best bands out there for many reasons. Think I'll get to see them for a 2nd time this year and that makes me so FUCKING HAPPY !!!!
I was the same to begin with, my advice is to listen to it 6 times in a row, it's a grower and it's now my fave mastodon album :)
wow I can t wait for this album now....
Thanks a lot!
I AM SO WITH BRENT ON THIS ONE!
his outlook on music is fucking great i share the same outlook.
brent, brann, bill and troy you guys put out amazing music.

Thing is, their albums just get better and better!
Crack the Skye was phenomenal!
Imagine what their next album will be like!
wow this sounds insane. im not a huge mastodon fan but this sounds like epic stuff.
they got some good stuff out already, too
That part at the end sounds so..... freaking...awesome.
And their music continues to grow. I love it! And them.
Yeah saw them last night, they were indeed pretty amazing.
i like the solo and melodic stuff in rock. their newest album got me listening to Mastodon.
Ain't nothing no greater than a Mastodon album... I'm still trying to fully digest Blood Mountain... Can't Wait...
his collection will be worth soooooooo much now.
I'm SOOOO getting this new record
every song on this album is amazing
They knew it was gonna be good. Top 3 albums of all time from anyone for sure. Might even be number 1. When i show people crack the skye i just tell them to be prepared to leave their body, its the most beautiful, real music ive ever laid my ears on.
I'm glad to hear that from Brent. More prog metal! I might get flak for this but I wasn't in to the hardcore scream-o stuff they were doing before.
SEEING THEM TOMORROW!!
@Metaldiabolic I believe that is a First Act Mat Pike signature guitar
Cant wait for the album to come out, still haven't heard the last and longest song :@:@:@ cant wait...
they keep getting better with every record, fucking amazing band! Also live they are fantastic.
I agree, I have no idea how there going to top "Crack the Skye" Its an amazing album, can't stop listening to it.
It's weird how prophetic this is. This is the album that really put them on the map and he basically says that.
Ive only recorded one song, but i do have a band, and we will be taking things seriously this summer
"the music was so fucking goddamn fast and crazy you couldnt put a guitar solo in it"
haha love the way he words stuff
God. Mastodon, playing teles and strats? That's crazy. Love them, and love Crack the Skye. It's a great record.
Wooooo, Mastodon its just so awesome, its my favorite metal band ever in histori.
Hell yeah, seeing them next year in January :D
every time i watch bill's interview, i end up staring at his collection.
It is not a Pike signature model. They both had First Act build them the 9 string but only Pike uses it exclusively now.

@brt927 ,cheers dude.did you mean matt made that guitar for him?. 9 strings have been around for a long long time
He's had it for a while now, since atleast August or so '07. Pretty rad hey.
With all the amazing albums that come after, Crack the Skye is still my favorite Mastodon album, and possibly one of the best heavy metal album of all time
I haven't seen a band on a roll of great albums like this in a long time
i saw this guys once in a metallica concert and they sound grate :D
Why is there a Shriner symbol at :31 on the Les Paul? Thats really cool, Ive had surgery at Al Kader Shriners Hospital in Portland
Little will they know that this would be one of the greatest metal albums ever.
blood mountain is one of my favourite albums ever. I don't know if they can top it for me personally...
the interviews with Brent must be at The Ranch De La Luna becuase the fun machine is in shot.
Damn you Mastodon! Deciding to quit touring last summer!
Wonder what kind of guitar Brent is playing at 2:11. Surprised to be seeing him play a Strat model
divinations!! awesome song
This is hard to explain but I will try. When I first heard Crack I was unsure of where it was going and what was going on with it - unfortunately it kind of took a backseat in my cd player. The only metal I listen to anymore. Love this band.
Crack the skye is their best work yet imo. Wasn`t a fan before, but this album won me over. Such a unique sound and great songs!
Anyone know what Bill is playing from 4:00? I know it's a guitar, but it seems to have nine strings... Well, it's got nine tuning pegs. It looks pretty cool, too. This is one amazing band.
i love star wars, this makes me like mastodon even more
I remember hearing the snippits of Bill playing the title track from this and wanting to hear that song really really bad, it didn't disappoint
one of the few bands that consistently gets better every record.
They absolutely did top it.
