Miracle - The Name on the Front More Important than the Name on the Back

- Shortened scene from the movie Miracle where the coach forces the team to work out after a game until one player finally realizes that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back.
"You don't have enough talent to win on talent alone."
That's the one line I will always remember from this scene.
Describes Johnny "Football" Manziel to the letter
GENTLEMAN YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TALENT TO WIN ON TALENT ALONE.
Tell that to maple leafs
It’s true for the USMNT right now too.
@@brendanobrien8198 ain't that a fact
"you guys don't wanna work during the game?? No problem we'll work now...." That send shivers down my spine...
Kurt was excellent to play the role of herb "POS" brooks.

I heard him say that, and I was like, "OH FUCK!"

Who were players that were better than these guys who didn’t make the team? Off the bat anyone
I once heard a Delta Force guy say that about selection into the Unit. He said, “It’s not always the best man that makes it. It’s the right one.”
Kurt Russel did a fantastic job in this role. He obviously studied Brooks very closely, down to the last detail. What an amazing story and movie.
was it a sweet roll? a burrito roll?
Even when they did a side by side, Kurt looked very similar to real life Herb.
Mr. Russell should have gotten at least a Best Oscar for Lead acting in this role.
except the accent...
Should of won award
This scene is one of the best scenes in all of sports movies. Not because the camera work is godly, not because the dialogue is amazing, not because the set design is so intricate. Simply because of what it represents because it actually happened. On that day he took all those kids and turned them into a hockey team. A United States hockey team.
There will never be another Coach like Coach Brooks.
Come to Minnesota, Fly-Boy... ;)
Nah, it's definitely the dialogue and the acting. I don't care for hockey and I am not a sports movie fan, but this scene has been in my head for 15 years straight. An excellent message for weak, indolent men.
Lol it didn't go down that way. Keep drinking the coolaid though and salute that flag in the morning. You are so easy I almost feel sorry for you.
Lol..
"Get a whistle"
Words you never want to hear from your coach. Great movie.
Especially after the game
Some of the scariest words an athlete can hear: "Get a whistle."
Or the simpsons softball special when Mr. Burns was managing the MLB Stars - "Smithers, the medicine balls" lol
😂😂😂 Absolute truth.
I did hundreds of these Herbies in my playing days
You can literally hear the whispers of fxxx from your teammates. Lmao
I second that but even worse ones are "get on the line"
Kurt Russell was perfect for this role.
Should of won award
Of course he was, they showed the audition tapes to the men who were on the team back in 1980 they said Kurt Russell reminded them the most of Herb Brooks
Kurt may not won an Oscar, but this movie and the Miracle on ice story gave the Tribute for Herb Brooks...Rest in Peace Herb 😢😂♱💖🎗🏒🇺🇸
And he always got sh*t on “because he couldn’t act”
Should’ve gotten nominated for best actor
I lived in Winthrop, Massachusetts back in 1980. After the Olympics, we gave Mike a parade, and he came to my elementary school. He's a really down to Earth guy.
He was right when he said “this cannot be a team of common men, because common men go nowhere, you have to be uncommon”
Herb knew that in order to beat the best team in the world they had to work hard and even harder than anybody else to succeed. If you want victory you must be willing to pay a price, whatever that may be. There is no such thing as a discounted victory.
"You think you can win on talent alone? Gentlemen, you don't have enough talent to win on talent alone." I think any coach can use any variation of that line to bust down their team no matter what sport they're coaching.
Works in every sport except Soccer and Basketball where literally 1 star player can drag a shitty team to a championship
Definitely works in soccer too. Heard of from a few coaches and it always worked lol
@@RandomGuyCDN Messi won a world cup yet?

@@RandomGuyCDN Unless that one player needs half the team to pull him up after falling down.
I had the opportunity to talk to Mark Johnson about this a few years ago and he said, as horrible as it was, it made them the team they became. The reverence for this group, given the political climate at the time, is well deserved, and Herb Brooks was the catalyst for what they achieved.
he to the I out of team in that drill.
Having known herb brooks in real life as he was a close friend of my grandpa I can say that Kurt russel does a very good protrayal of who he was as a person and how passionate he was about the game he loved so much. He changed the sport forever and I’m glad to have personally gotten to meet and drink coffee with him.
He nailed the accent of Minnesotans without being "hammy" about it. Having lived in the state, I knew a couple of people who knew Herb Brooks and saw the movie. The one thing they said the movie really got wrong, was that as a coach he was incredibly foul-mouthed. The movie was a Disney feature, so figure that was the reason why that was omitted.
I loved how he was so methodical in his preparation… the secret is in the details
I congrats all the actors in this movie and i congrats the players of team USA in the 1980 olympics. I don't have an ounce of respect for herb POS brooks.
@@elvistiso6275 I mean obviously that's why they couldn't, so I wouldn't say they got it wrong

Herb Brooks was exactly the coach this team needed to win, and Kurt Russell was exactly the actor needed to play Herb Brooks. Well done, sirs. Well done.
@silky johnson Sorry. How's your dad doing?
silky johnson I don't know, the name 49ers isn't all that important.
In one of the DVD extras for Miracle, Herb Brooks said that he actually forewarned the players that he would skate them after the game if they didn’t skate hard during the game. So in real life the players knew what they were in for when they were forced to stay on the ice.
I could watch this movie everyday
They don't make 'em like Herb Brooks anymore. Probably the greatest hockey coach in history. The things he did with that team are unheard of.
And if they did he'd be fired after the first preseason game because today's players can't be worked like that they need to be coddled.
+KevAng039 Fuck that. I would run my team just like him. You're not getting paid to be their friend.
+NYG1991 yea the sad part is I'd be the same way with them. I hate celebrating stupid plays when you're getting your ass kicked I'd bench for that alone.
Don't want to play during the game get ready for some herbies.
Unfortunately these pansies today would cry to the players union about abuse and we would be fired.
KevAng039, that's what I'm saying. You'd be doing suicides non stop for an hour and a half after the game.
Yes they did and his name was Scotty Bowman.
"I can't promise you we will be the best team at Lake Placid. But we will be the best conditioned. That I can promise you". Coming together as a team!!
Play for the name on the front and they’ll remember the one on the back boys
Truth! 44 years later I still remember every player and I'm not even a hockey fan.
Sometimes a kick in the ass is exactly what is needed to get the job done. Herb knew it would take the energy of a bunch of college age kids to get job done but he also knew that he would have to break down that spirit to make them work together and achieve greatness...AWESOME movie and message to all competitors!!
I had a coach do this to my team after a football game, we ran wind sprints for almost a fuckin hour. We also won state that year, so I'm not going to complain.

Remember a few years back when the US golfers were complaining they weren't getting paid enough to play the Ryder Cup Matches. I was so disappointed that not one of them didn't say; "I would pay for this, but that would ruin the whole thing. In fact, the money I do get for this is going to (veteran's charity.) Without a doubt one of the greatest sports movies ever and the greatest sports upset in history
As a former hockey player it’s terrifying anytime the words goal line are said. You know what’s coming when you hear it.
Herb Brooks was a motivator. He broke them down then built a team! Something lacking in todays sports. It's all about them and the paycheck!

What Brooks did then is part of why I love Tom Izzo so much now. With Izzo it is always (as Brooks said) not about getting the best players, it's about getting the *_right_* players.
Greatest coach (any sport, and this includes my boy Ron Mason) in MSU history, because his philosophy is family first, team second, and this leads to winning regularly and turning out great players like Draymond Green, who should not have been great on paper.
it was always about the money, the thing was the money was less and the players didn't have the capital to tell coaches to go fuck themselves.
Just found out the Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov died today, maybe if there is an afterlife, he and Herb Brooks will have their rematch.
Appreciate the sentiment but no need for a rematch. Although his pull of Tretiak will be forever second-guessed (justifiably, no one's perfect), Tikhonov is one of the all-time great hockey coaches as is Brooks. Hopefully there's a place in hockey heaven where they can have a drink of each one's choosing and watch some great hockey and reminisce about the old times.
Ronald Bittner Great comment. It's interesting I read that he was heavily hated by the Soviet team. But his tactics worked I guess.
its because he was dictator unlike the beloved anatoli tarasov who they all loved.
Tarasov was.
i never met him, or "cheered" for him but, all i have is respect. RIP.
One of the best stories of the most under appreciated hockey coach in modern times. Herb did things few people liked or agreed with, but his job was to win games and that is precisely what he did.
I’ll never forget, in high school we had a football scrimmage against a team we should’ve beat the breaks off of, and we didn’t, and the scrimmage was at their field. Our coach made us run sidelines and do push-ups on that field in front of everyone after the game. Never forget that moment

That is RIGHT.The name on the front more important than the name on the back.It ' s called the TEAM.
There’s no I in team but there’s definitely a ME
this part made me cry unbelievable and one of the greatest scene ever in a movie
If this doesn’t tell you something about what matters, you’ll never know. I almost want to cry.
MASTERFUL acting. To this day, I'll always prefer to sit near the back of the movie theatre. The reason being that when this movie came out, WEEKS or so after the premier showing, theaters were still so packed that the only available seats for my dad, brother and me were in the very first row in the right corner. This scene still, me arching my neck to see the whole thing, put everyone in goosebumps. Was the first time I'd ever seen it, and with endless tournament trips it was far from the last time. A country needs teams like this.
3:06 Perhaps it's just me, but when Herb tells Craig to blow the whistle "Again." and gives him that look, I feel that he's punishing Craig, as much as the team, for not trusting him and backing him up with the team. Like he's telling him; "You don't want to push these boys into doing what must be done then I'm going to push you to do it." Anyone else get that vibe?
Went through the comments to see if anyone said this. Anyway I had a work event recently where the real Jim Craig (The goalie) came in for a sales meeting and brought this scene up. He said exactly this and did confirm that Herb was punishing Coach Craig here more than the players. So great observation, I did not notice that on my first watch
I just picked up on this.
Yeah I agree, I also thinks it's Herb's way of showing the players that if Craig is cooperative with him, then so do they.
Great take. Hadn't seen this.
every time i see this I get chills even over a hundred times it still gets me EVERY time!
Played hockey in high school. We used to do this drill for 5-10 minutes as a warm up. I can't believe none of these players didn't die during this. Incredible.
This drill was brutal lol
In real life, some of them almost did. Herb was nearly fired after this for abusing the player. In real life, the drill didn't end with some revelation by the players that bonded the team, it ended with the players walking off the ice in disgust.
@@celebrim1 Thanks Matt. I didn't know that, but not surprised. Hollywood always puts their twist on the truth.

This was a great movie. Portraying a great time in American history The Prestige of this event will never be repeated again due to Professionals in the Olympics . I was 18 when? The US Won the gold medal. I remember thinking they'll be lucky if they even get a bronze. This was a great moment. I'm glad I was there to see it.
Wow. Never seen this movie. Never seen this clip. Only followed this story from the news headlines when it happened. I was 12 when this occurred. My eyes just gave out. Big flood of tears. This hit me as hard as the ending to Rudy. Wow.
I saw 1980 US Olympic team play Canada in a n exhibition game here in Calgary Alberta against Canada in late 1979. Like a lot of other hockey fans I had no clue or premonition the US would capture the gold medal in Lake Placid. I have the DVD of this movie and play it often. I am not the least surprised that many of the players went on to be public speakers. I can honestly say that as a Canadian I would love to hear all their stories as well.

Some of the USA participants for the 2020 Summer Games, who are ashamed to represent the United States, should take some lessons from these guys. They are proud to be Americans, did the impossible, and we still talk about them over 40 years later! Well done boys!
Well when you got people in this country doing anything and everything to undermine anyone here who isn't white, Christian, heterosexual, and male, I'd be ashamed of my country too!

My favorite sports movie of all time and know very little about hockey. I watched that game live when I was a kid and it was such a monumental achievement. This movie has everything a sports movie should have.
Whether you cherish sports or are ambivalent towards it, this is a priceless life lesson for the cost of 4-minutes of your life.

"The Name on the Front More Important than the Name on the Back" Very, Very , well put. You're with The REAL America's Team !!!!
This scene reminds me of my time when I was in high school playing football. During the summer in 1999 right before the start of the season it was a Saturday and it was 85-90 degrees in NYC. Our coach made us played 5 different teams throughout one day. After we were done he made us run up a steep hill which is also slanted. I have never been so tired in my entire life.

dalaughingsamoan you've never been skated hard enough if you believe that. We had a similar situation happen when we played in Sweden. We were young and overwhelmed by the beauty of the Swedish girls. Same thing happened on the bench, guys talking about girls in the stands. We got our clock cleaned that game too.
Our coach didn't make us skate afterwards.... but he should have. We deserved the same fate as these players.
Why should he have punished were you talking disrespectfully or were you just distracted also what do you mean you got your clock cleaned
@@iamaidansmith7542 We were paying more attention to the girls than the hockey game.
"Clock cleaned" means the other team beat us pretty badly and outplayed us.
My favorite hockey movie and favorite line and scene. Play it AGAIN!
The first time I saw this, I just had a feeling this is what Herb was trying to do. When Mike spoke up, I whispered to my date, "...here it comes...." - and I was right. As a U.S. Army veteran, this scene still gives me a shiver.
In the extras on the DVD when interviewing Brooks about this he said it was the one thing he regretted and if he could go back he wouldn't do it again. However I think the lesson was worth the pain as it brought the team under the USA banner with no questions asked.
This was the kind of couching I was raised with. Suicides till puking. This is what made me the fastest fucker in my A-AA travel leagues growing up. This kind of training is what made all of my teams growing up consistent top 3 contenders. Even when we won, our coach would make us skate suicides till we were puking, only because we didn't play good enough despite the win. I miss those days.
Powerful and brilliant

This brings back memories. I once lost a wrestling match that I should've won at a dual meet because I overlooked the guy. After the match my assistant coach made me run stairs until the meet was over. When it was done my dad, who was also an assistant, told me not to shower because I was gonna do calisthenics when we got home

There are players,...and there are participants. Men and women who WORK , live honestly and set the example are the players. Blood, sweat ,toil and tears didn't kill our parents,...or us. I'm proud of you if you exhibit those traits. Set a better standard every day.
Men and women who actually act like Christians are the players but we have no actual players in the USA. "Just guys who wear hockey gear and say they are hockey players." they work for their names and not Jesus name.

"Think you can win on talent alone? Gentlemen, you don't HAVE enough talent to win on talent alone."
My favorite Brooksism. It was a harsh thing to say, but it was true. Herb was trying teach them that they must rely on each other rather than themselves.
You mean this quote is better than, "They look like 2 monkeys humping a football"?
I loved every second of this movie.
Some may argue that what Herb Brooks did here was crossing the line... I do not. He was trying to teach his players to be mentally and physically prepared for any game. In other words, when you are competing your mind should be completely focused on the task at hand instead of attractive women in the stands.
I agree he didn't cross the line...
These kids were acting like college students in the game, a practice game against a much weaker team, but still...
They were focused on the women in the stands and how much they could drink that night after the end of the game. They lost by one point and it was one of the biggest reasons why people said they would need a miracle to win against the U.S.S.R because of this incident.
If anybody thought this was crossing the line, how did they think the Soviets trained? Or better yet, how would we ever compete against a team like the Finnish, Soviets or anybody else who was good? Legs gives out. Friendships fade. Champions, rings, and banners last forever.
Livingston Hampton herb himself said he crossed the line
I agree Herb did not cross the line!!! Up to this point if anyone remembers from earlier in the movie when asked who do you play for they all had different answer to the question!!! Basically giving him the impression that they where playing for the name on the back of the jersey, he stopped the workout when Eruzione spoke up and said "Mike Eruzione Winthrop Massachusetts" Brooks says " Who do you play for?" Eruzione says " United States of America" That is the answer he was looking for from the start!!! He wanted them to know that they were not playing for individual stats or they were play for one thing, they were playing for their Country!!!!
@BLAZE RUNNER He wasn't even close to crossing the line. You've obviously never been a serious athlete in your life.
