  • These thick stalks in my St Augustinegrass, are they seeds? Will they grow? Is there any St Augustine Grass seed available?
You can get St Augustine grass plus here - this is what we use instead of seed:

The lightening bit was top notch. Also did not know the seed heads had much nutrients. By the way, that rgs & air8 is awesome really giving my lawn a boost this year.

Well I just wasted about an hour pulling all of my St. Augustine seeds and planting them on bare spots in the lawn. I had no idea they were sterile. smh

I beg to differ on seed viability
I let mine go to seed every year or two, and it will seed
If there’s a flower with pollen, it can be pollenated and will sprout grass

I had this happen to me last week before I mowed. Are you saying the seeds can be viable? Will it expand St A if I let the seeds be for a few weeks before mowing again?

@@arielrodriguez6980I didn't know it seeded at all until today I noticed a spot that is. I did try to pull a few and drop them into a flower pot... I'm really interested in testing germinating (wet paper towel, a plastic bag and a dark place) a few or even using some rooting hormones, just to see if anything happens. From what I've seen with other plants, even if it's not possible to grow, wouldn't you have to let the seeds mature? I'm wondering how long that would take.

@@ehill1536 well? What happened? I was gonna try this myself

    • @ehill1536

@autolocksmith38 No luck. Maybe, as OP said, they need to be pollinated. From what I've read, the grass doesn't produce pollen until it is over a foot tall.
As you probably already know, you can reproduce St Augustine with the "runners". I've grown some sod plugs in a pot with the clippings from edging and collecting. However, never had good results from just trying to replant them right into the lawn.

Thanks for replying back so fast. No I didn’t know you can start plugs from the runners. I guess I didn’t get that far. I have a front lawn that I’m desperately trying to cover with st Augustine plugs. But I need more plugs and can’t find anymore. The plugs I planted a couple weeks ago are all seeding. Is there a way to make my own plugs or cultivate in any way? Are these seed pods the “runners” you’re speaking of? I’ll do some searching on runners. Thanks!

If the seeds are no good, how did St. Augustine ever come into existence?

  • @robertsrt

If the seeds are never viable how the hell did the grass come into existence. It had to start from a seed right? Lol

    • @navyjohnes
      @navyjohnes 2 года назад +1

It was created in a lab in St. Augustine Florida… That’s how it got it name. So much for me in searching for SAG.
Note, you will need to purchase it by the sod or plugs..

St. Augustine seeds are not reliably viable. What that means is that a very large portion of the seeds produced will not germinate. (Sad face) However that does not mean zero of the seeds will germinate and letting a lawn go to seed if it does so quickly without growing too long can mean some self duplication in the lawn and a thicker lawn "could occur" --no guarantees! In fact guarantees were the reason seeds are no longer sold, the results were too poor and a good outcome could not be guaranteed so its no longer sold. So when should you not let it go to seed? Well if it isnt producing quickly and grows too long while going to seed it means you will more likey damage the grass when cutting afterwards because of the height.
