John Helliwell, Supertramp's saxophone virtuoso, breathes life into their music, especially evident in "My Kind of Lady." His masterful sax solos add a distinctive touch, elevating the band's sound to iconic status. Beyond technical brilliance, Helliwell brings a rich history to Supertramp, having joined them in 1973. "My Kind of Lady" showcases Helliwell's ability to seamlessly blend jazzy elements into the rock landscape. His saxophone becomes a storyteller within the song, adding emotional depth. Across Supertramp's discography, from the iconic "The Logical Song" to the whimsical "Take the Long Way Home," Helliwell's saxophone is the soulful thread connecting their diverse musical tapestry. In essence, Helliwell's saxophone isn't just an instrument; it's an integral part of Supertramp's identity. His musical finesse has left an indelible mark, making him a key architect of the band's success.

It's Rick Davies as lead singer here. He also harmonizes with himself, singing falsetto. Amazing band, both Rick and Roger are incredibly talented and great musicians as well as song-writers. And obviously the whole band was full of talent. Not just John Helliwells amazing sax (as well as clarinette etc..) but also the rhythm section, Siebenberg and Thompson.

This is from "Famous Last Words," the last album featuring both Davies and Hodgson on songwriting and lead vocals duties.

  • @Jessica_Roth
    @Jessica_Roth 7 месяцев назад

Part of me irrationally resents this song, that Rick Davies's spotlight (single, MV) on the final album before Roger Hodgson left the group being "only" a 1950s pastiche feeds into the popular perception that Roger was 80% of the group, with people only knowing Rick for "Goodbye Stranger" and "Bloody Well Right".
But it is a wonderful pastiche. Note-perfect, as the 'Tramp always are.
And so farewell to the team of Rick and Roger and John Helliwell on the reed instruments and Dougie Thomson on the bass and Bob Siebenberg on the drums. They will continue to make fine music in the future (the other four certainly poured their heart into "Brother, Where You Bound"), but this is the final album for the five. But so it goes.

British folks (particularly with Welsh ancestry) pronounce "Davies" the way we say "Davis". You can ignore the "e", whether it's Rick Davies here or Ray and Dave Davies in The Kinks.
(This seems a good time to subtly plug The Kinks. "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" [1966 or 1996 version, or both], perhaps?)

  • @johncampbell756

My favorite by them is Even in the Quietest Moments.
Kenny Ortega (Hugh School Musical) directed the video. The lead singer here actually sings all the backing vocals as well. Guitarist, other lead singer Roger Hodgson was late and doesn't appear in the door wop sections of the video. He left the band not long after this.

This song is all Rick Davies, which showcased his ability to sing in various ranges, in fact Hodgson had very little to do with the song, other than some guitar work. It was a time after quite a few acrimonious years, in which the relationship between Davies and Hodgson deteriorated quite badly, and the latter left the band after the album this song is taken from, called "Famous last words" in 1983.

I agree with your video title, but this song is pretty far down my list of Supertramp songs I listen to. I would say every one of your previous Supertramp listens was superior. I don't think you've done my favorite one yet and you are unlikely to due to its length, but if you like Supertramp (and from your reactions you seem to) I recommend at least listening to Fool's Overture [length-10:51] on your own time.

Not a familiar Supertramp song for most people. Other popular songs you haven't reacted to yet. Rudy and Hide In Your Shell.

I don’t remember ever hearing that song before. This song must not be one there hits. So many people in the comments had never heard of this song. 7:33 !

Of all the Supertramp songs you've got to hear, this would rank really low... Try: "EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS," "A SOAPBOX OPERA," "THE MEANING," "FOOL'S OVERTURE," "CRIME OF THE CENTURY," "IF EVERYONE WAS LISTENING," etc...

Does anyone know of a Supertramp song that has something to do with a Subway Train? Not "Rudy" but a newer song I think.

This is off the grossly underappreciated album Famous last Words (1982). I haven't seen this video before and it doesn't even look like how I know them to look during the 1970s.

@@tonyginnetti5828 Thanks for the correction, Tony. Can't believe I initially wrote that it was off Crisis? What Crisis?. I was thinking of the song Lady off that amazing 1975 album. Both are great tunes with the word Lady in them.
