I absolutely LOVE this song and as Amber said you can absolutely lose yourself in the journey. So many fantastic Supertramp songs though. Too many to say this is my favourite. I guess if I had to put some sort of order on them it would be: (1) Give a Little Bit, (2) The Logical Song, (3) School, (4) Dreamer and (5) It's Raining Again. I return to these again and again.
@@briandonohue2502 If Jay and Amber want to go REALLY deep into prog rock they could review Rush - "2112" , Mike Oldfield - "Tubular Bells" or Renaissance - "Song for all Seasons" but maybe having a video of an hour or so (including comments) would be too much work to make or too long for people to listen through! Plenty around these days like the album Octovarium - "Out of Time" or Andromida - "Voyager".
@@joannecunliffe8067 Totally agree on 2112 and Tubular Bells. I thought about mentioning 2112. Haven't heard the others so thank you for mentioning. Always on the search for great music to check out.
When I was growing up, Breakfast in America was considered their new stuff. Keep checking out their "older music". It's the best. My all time favorite group. I am 60 years old and still remember hearing that scream for the first time back when I was in school over 40+ years ago.
And of course, the next track on the album is Bloody Well Right, which is a track that starts with clean, tight, crisp keyboards and then rips into amazing guitars!
Person of "a certain age" here..... SuperTramp, Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, the list goes on. Basements of our parents' houses on Friday nights, chilling, downing beers, grooving on the amazing music from the mid to late 1970s. We had unbelievably amazing MUSIC, we were so lucky....
Why is it scary or surprising that good music last through the years. Just like paintings and sculptures, music is an art form and great artists are remembered. Right now, while you read this, thousands of musicians are playing music written centuries ago, there's even a chance that human invented music(Neanderthal flute) before they developed a language. We who wear the ears, are responsible to "feed" them the good stuff. Don't let an algorithm decide for you what you must listen to. I would argue that most of the music crap we are fed from the medias these days is somewhat the same as Trump's NFTs for visual art, cheap ,shallow, plagiarized and unimaginative.
@@Particulator Wow. you left a thoughtful comment.. and then had to tie a former president into it.. so unnecessary. 😒 All I can say is try not to think about that guy for the next two years. Just like in a play, there is an intermission, which is intended to give everyone a rest, so that they can be all fired up mentally when part two inevitably comes. You'd be wise to take a mental break from "part one", and get that guy out of your head in the meantime.. afterall, this intermission only has 716 days left in it. 🤣
1974!!! This album is so underrated as one of the great albums all time! They wrote brilliant songs for this album. And you'd love the entire album... it's a total trip! Try "Hide In Your Shell" and "Asylum" and "Rudy"... just brilliant deep songs! Love your reaction to "School"!
That song got me started on SuperTramp. I heard it at a friend of a friend's house on on his state of the art stereo and bought the Album on the way home. My equipment is no slouch either and have bought maybe 5 or 6 of the Masters. Sad part is I lost everything , Nearly my House, but my Album collection and equipment in the Loma Preita earthquake being only 5 or 6 miles from the epicenter and 2 miles offset from the fault line did not survive.
First song by Supertramp that I heard back in the day. Was blown aware by the clarity of each instrument and the production quality that typified Supertramp albums and shows. Do Rudy next and just keep going on this album Crime Of The Century. Mega, mega album.
This was a really fascinating time in music you have great artists like Supertramp, Pink Floyd , Rush ,yes , Queen ,David Bowie, Alan Parsons project , and many others taking music to new levels with no auto tunes or other tricks. Just pure raw talent, and imagination. Great reaction.
Supertramp we’re absolutely huge in their home country,Britain and that run of albums which included “Crime…..”,Even In The Quietest Moment and “Breakfast….” were milestones for me. Fantastic band and just as excellent live.
Seriously, you two need to listen to the whole album in one sitting. I was very young when this album came out, but I bought it. I was 7. I really didn’t “get” everything that they were trying to convey, but the music did take me away from where I was at the time. It was amazing. The best distraction from a stressful (not entirely in a bad way) childhood. I was raised in a very strict home on military bases. Dad was often away fir training exercises. We were often on bases isolated from cities and “the real world” populated by homes of civilians. If we didn’t move in any given year, most of our friends did. There was little to no contact with the extended family. But my parents let us have our escapes from daily stresses by giving us unrestricted use of base and community libraries, and both my brother and I were given radios for our rooms. The music was the best. The era I grew up in was filled with such variety and such amazingly creative artists. The reason I started watching these reaction videos is to see the joy and wonder on your faces. It takes me back to not only when I discovered the songs, but the moment that the meanings “clicked in” for me. Thanks for posting the videos. I look forward to seeing them daily.
I was just about to comment *exactly* the same thing about listening to the whole album. It's not a concept album as such, but there's an amazing unity about all eight songs in order.
I love watching reactions….it’s like so cool watching people hearing for the first time! The other day just watched a 22 year old react to Pink Floyd Darkside of the moon full album. It was so cool he was absolutely loving. It said it was the best album he had ever heard in his life!!
This is my favorite Supertamp album. School and the title track, Crime of the Century, are my favorite tracks. I was hooked the first time I heard them and went to see them 3 times live back in the mid 70's. Their music is worth a further dive into. You won't be disappointed.
Also saw them in '79, an outdoor show on a beautiful night at my college. They waited until dark, then slowly came out and began to tune their instruments. Eventually in the background that harmonica sound began to emerge and they started to play this song, much to the delight of the crowd. Amazing opening, and definitely my favourite song by them.
Supertramp , Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons all collaborated with each other on each other's albums , that's why you hear Pink Floyd in this song ! Incorporating the sounds of children at school are a good example of that ! They all loved their sound effects !
Actually, Pink Floyd The Wall was released in 1979 while Supertramp Crime of the century was released in 1974. So Pink Floyd could not supply the children sounds.
I second all comments. This was most folks' first Supertramp experience. And after all the great tunes of theirs that came after, they still haven't topped it IMO.
Absolutely my favorite Supertramp song with Logical Song right behind it. There lyrics are so deep and the musicianship is just superb! Very Floydian in their own way, and Pink Floyd is my favorite band as well. Thanks again for the smile! Hope y’all have a great day!
When I met my husband in 1977 he drove around with 8 tracks playing in his car stereo. This was one of them. I knew the album (it was a few yrs old by then) and some of the trackss but he made sure we listened closely (and loudly), his fingers softly beating time to the tempo on the steering wheel. Or the local FM station would play entire albums in the evening, Crime of the Century being one of them. We still love the album and I'd label it progressive pop rock. Someone commented that you should react to Rush's 2112: Overture/The Temples of Syrinx (1976). Talk about headspace! Jay, you will LOVE the heavy warpspeed guitar riff, and Neil Peart's drums that bring it over the top. No lyrics until several minutes in...and man, they're fabulous! It's a crazy concept album depicting a future in the year 2112 where strange priests rule society and have outlawed music. But...someone has found a guitar! The song lyrics amount to a lecture from the priests but oh, what a tune they lecture with! Please consider it. Blessings to you and your sweet family ♡
After Roger Hodgson left the band Supertramp released their Brother where you bound album. David Gilmour plays guitar on that 16 minute epic title tune. Check it out.
This whole album is full of trippy, psychedelic, Floyd-like deeply meaningful music. Often melancholy, with dashes of ripping rock, and perfectly placed woodwinds and other unique sounds. This album to me has always been a top 10 album of all time. Crime of the Century, Asylum, Rudy, Hide In Your Shell, If Everyone Was Listening are all great songs to react to. You've already hit 3 of them now. Listen to all of them, they're all the best of early Supertramp!
In college, "Crime of the Century" was always the album we brought to the store to test out stereo equipment and speakers before we purchased. Also, fortunate to catch them live on the breakfast in America tour. Quite the combination of music and visuals on a large screen. They were late to take the stage, so they made it up to us by playing almost three and a half hours without intermission. That night they opened with "School". Feel free to select any other song from "Crime" or "Even in the Quietest Moments".
Crime of the century, fools overture, breakfast in america, just another nervous wreck, soapbox opera there’s so many more u can listen too aswell incredible band with so many good songs. Great video love them
The Supertramp train video is filmed in England in 1974 at the location of probably Swindon, Reading which is west of London. The lead singer is Roger Hodgson who still tours. The other band writer is Rick Davies who retained the name and used to tour as Supertramp. Check out “Rudy” on the Crime of the Century which is another classic.
Back when I was in my LP phase (late '70s/early '80s), out of my ~200 album purchases I paid premium prices for *two* master disk LPs - "Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'Crime Of The Century'.
This is probably my favorite Supertramp song! Ever since I saw your reaction this morning, while having breakfast, I've had "Breakfast in America" in my head. 😀
From their 1974, 3rd album, Crime of the Century, School is a fabulously written song by Rick Davies and Rodger Hodgson. From the hauntingly beautiful harmonica intro, this song just reves up into a masterpiece. Rick Davies provides a bright piano lead that is out of this world. The whole album is so amazing. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Having heard this song hundreds of times I still hear it with a sense of amazement on how sublime music can be. It is uplifting watching while both of you discover those gems.
What's incredible is that they were in their 20s and so aware of the world. That's a testament to their mastery and genius musically, lyrically and why their music is always relevant and timeless. Keep going on the Crime of the Century album. It's a masterpiece.
Did you guys know that YOUR "Catch phrase " "GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT" was a Parliament lyrical "chant" in their song SUPERGROOVALISTICPROSTIFUNKSTACATION?? "Give the people what they want, when they want, and they want it all the time !" If I remember it correctly 46-47 years ago...It is the only repetitious chant throughout the whole 7 minute song !!
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This whole album deserves to be listened to with a top-notch sound system cranked to 11 - NOT headphones - with your whole body being immersed in the sound. By far their best tune, and I still use it for sound system testing! :)
I have been waiting for you two to discover this song. I just knew that you would like it. For me, this is one of those songs that I like to call, "a driving song". You know the kind of song that you want to hear while you are out on the highway on a road trip. It starts out nice and slow and then just builds up speed. It is a classic for me anyway.
This song and "Rudy" off the same album might be my two favorite Supertramp songs. Songs about loneliness and isolation with compelling lyrics and characters.
There are so many different grooves and turns in this song.. It is the band's classic and the opening track on a great album. One thing that is so much less today is the experience of picking up an new album and putting it on starting with track one - side one. This song starts off one of the best albums ever released.
Oh the memories this song brings back for me back in the late 70's. Been hoping for so long for you guys to do this one. One of my all time favorites, Supertramp was the greatest. The scream the little girl does in the beginning just before the band really kicks in used to freak me out but I thought it was so cool too.
OMG! You DID IT! I've been recommending and waiting for this for many, many months! Thank you! Thank you! Brilliant song and brilliant album. I get lost in this when I put on my headphones and crank it up. Amber was sailing away as she listened and I love that (a journey, indeed, Amber)! I knew you would eventually get to this and I am so glad you did! THANK YOU! I now feel complete! hehe.
When I was 13 in 1974, a friend's family here in Canada had a pizza restaurant. One of the restaurant employees just happened to be the sister of a Supertramp band member. She had her brother send a copy of the album signed by the band that she gave to my friend. At the time the album was only released in the UK and it was almost three years later that the re-release became an international hit. It's possible that when we used to listen to my friends copy, we were the only ones in North America doing so. We would hang out and play the entire album repeatedly. It was (and is) so good! I suspect my old friend Neil still has that signed copy after 49 years but the album itself is likely worn out.
THe back rhythms to all of their songs will mesmerize you. This one in particular. Then they layer some of the most awesome jams on top of that and THEN add the riffs, drums, on top of that. They're symphonic.
The first time I decided to put this on and JAM along with it, my discovery was, you don't/can't just JAM along with Supertramp, these songs are ALL definably so well arranged you have to revisit them with a respect of musical educated, sophisticated, and tasty groves that moves you to higher levels!!!
My favourite group all-time from my favourite album of theirs - a true masterpiece lyrically and musically from the opening song School to the closer Crime of the Century. School, lyrically, is serious social commentary. It is followed immediately by another all-time classic Bloody Well Right. As with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (1973), to get the full sonic and lyrical impact of the album Crime of the Century (1974) should be listened to in its entirety in one sitting. Please do all the songs off Crime at some point.
This song really does have a Pink Floyd vibe to it. I have this album on CD, perfect for road trips. This and Even In The Quietest Moments are my two top faves by them. You two always give great and honest reactions. It's a pleasure to experience this great music for the first time along with you!
If you want more “Headspace” from Supertramp, check out the song Child of Vision. The last 1/3 of the song, Rodger Hodgson shows off his keyboard mastery. Great song.
Supertramp was sort of prog, but with an interesting jazzy twist. This whole album is brilliant (as others have said). This was a great opening track...also love Asylum, Rudy an the title track Crime of the Century. I was fortunate enough to see them live after the album came out - still remember it so clearly...lights go down and opening with that haunting harmonica...epic
Love Supertramp and so pleased you two are discovering their greatness. Also, excellent insights Amber. As a retired teacher of 40 years, you're exactly right. American schools were created to prepare children for the factory system in the mid-1800s and not much has changed since then. It was all part of the dumbing down of America - no individuality, no creativity. Schools, at least those behind the scenes, only wanted to create little robots of the state. Sad but true. I did my part to change that, but I'm only one person.
Yet freakin’ Missy Elliott is nominated this year while Supertramp was doing it since two years before she was born. The Hall has lost a lot of credibility with many of us the past two decades, both because of who has gotten in and because of many legends who are still left out.
I hear shades of "Echoes" from Pink Floyd on "School". So the reference to Pink Floyd in my opinion is valid. This is a song that I have grown to love through the years and it's one of my favorites from them now.
Crime of the Century album is immaculate from start to finish! Supertramp continues to be unheralded and deserve more recognition than they receive. The RRHOF needs to come knocking - damn shame it hasn't happened yet!
I love Supertramp, and your reactions to them. Please react to Rudy or Fool's Overture next. Two really good Supertramp songs that I know you will love. The title track from this album, Crime of the Century, is really good too.
I think I wrote it on another Supertramp reaction video as well but Supertramp is on one level with Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. in my opinion. They were absolutely next level, instrumentally and vocally! 😊
Supertramp at their finest. Crime of the Century album is legit.
There's nothing like a bit of Supertramp!

Used to blast this thru my car speakers……from my eight track player….geez am I that old
Having heard this song hundreds of times I still hear it with a sense of amazement on how sublime music can be. It is uplifting watching while both of you discover those gems.
What's incredible is that they were in their 20s and so aware of the world. That's a testament to their mastery and genius musically, lyrically and why their music is always relevant and timeless. Keep going on the Crime of the Century album. It's a masterpiece.
I would say rather than Supertramp know beyond their years, the group playing together had reached a Synergy. They would lose that magic pretty quick.
The whole album is just wonderful, best band ever. Give Rudy and Crime of the Century a listen, they will not disappoint!!!
Please do Rudy. 💐
My Kind Of Lady is the best of Supertramp. When that saxaphone comes in at the end I just melt.
As stated by others this album is fantastic.
If you like School, you will love Rudy off the Crime of the Century album. One of the blessings in my youth was seeing them. Enjoy
Saw them in ‘79!! Awesome concert!! Love the piano riff!!!🤘🔥
Cool....saw them in '76/'77 ? Sammy Hagar band was warmup band...can you believe it....great concert, I think. Glad you saw them at their best...😎🙏
Saw them in Ottawa on the 78/79 tour. Unbelievable show!
Saw them in 83 (FLW tour, Roger's last). Rudy in concert was just mindmelting.
David Gilmour from Pink Floyd plays the lead guitar on Brother Where You Bound by Supertramp. Its their first post Roger Hodgson album.
This album was my first exposure to Supertramp way back in 8th grade. We listened to this album almost daily.
Totally agree. At high school head between speakers. Cranking in the car roadtripping. Double cassette with Dark side of the Moon
and Hide in your Shell
Same Rudy is a masterpiece
There are so many different grooves and turns in this song.. It is the band's classic and the opening track on a great album. One thing that is so much less today is the experience of picking up an new album and putting it on starting with track one - side one. This song starts off one of the best albums ever released.
Oh the memories this song brings back for me back in the late 70's. Been hoping for so long for you guys to do this one. One of my all time favorites, Supertramp was the greatest. The scream the little girl does in the beginning just before the band really kicks in used to freak me out but I thought it was so cool too.
Crime Of The Century one of the best albums ever made you must listen to the entire album to appreciate how Good Supertramp where...
OMG! THANK YOU! I now feel complete! hehe.
Nice to see that…”You’re comin’ along”…
Soooo many great memories from the 70's tied to this band and their phenomenal albums!
Agree with many other people who suggest “Rudy” - just an epic journey on that song.
This is my favourite Supertramp song. So innovative, hauntingly beautiful, and insightful.
Many years have passed. Supertramp is still my favorite music group. Since the first time I listened to them... in 1980.
My FAVOURITE Supertramp album and song
My favourite group all-time from my favourite album of theirs - a true masterpiece lyrically and musically from the opening song School to the closer Crime of the Century. School, lyrically, is serious social commentary. It is followed immediately by another all-time classic Bloody Well Right. As with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (1973), to get the full sonic and lyrical impact of the album Crime of the Century (1974) should be listened to in its entirety in one sitting. Please do all the songs off Crime at some point.
"Rudy" is another song on this amazing album (Crime of the Century) that takes you on a journey. Thanks for getting back to Supertramp!
Great song.
Supertramp is one of my favorite bands. Headspace is a good word to use with them.
Great song from a fantastic album. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Yes they should!!!!
They’re not??? Crazy
RRHOF isn't anything special actually.
Foreigner and BTO is not in there either. Also crazy.
Yet freakin’ Missy Elliott is nominated this year while Supertramp was doing it since two years before she was born. The Hall has lost a lot of credibility with many of us the past two decades, both because of who has gotten in and because of many legends who are still left out.
Hide In Your Shell off this album and Child Of Vision off Breakfast In America are my 2 favorite songs by them.
This is my all time favorite Supertramp song, ever!
I hear shades of "Echoes" from Pink Floyd on "School". So the reference to Pink Floyd in my opinion is valid. This is a song that I have grown to love through the years and it's one of my favorites from them now.
First track from the "Crime of the Century" masterpiece Album.
The opening song to one of the best live concerts ever recorded and way before it's time, the subliminal Live in Paris
Absolutely one of my top 3 albums of all-time. Perfect concept album.
Guys, the song *"Even In The Quietest Moments"* (album of same name) is a headspace jam. Trippy, beautiful and moving. Total vibe.
such a beautiful song.
Bloody Well Right, not to be missed. These guys had their own sound, which was polished and perfect. Amber fell away, so cool. Thanks for this.
Crime of the Century album is immaculate from start to finish! Supertramp continues to be unheralded and deserve more recognition than they receive. The RRHOF needs to come knocking - damn shame it hasn't happened yet!
Wow! That was a hell of a ride!!
I love Supertramp, and your reactions to them. Please react to Rudy or Fool's Overture next. Two really good Supertramp songs that I know you will love. The title track from this album, Crime of the Century, is really good too.
Yeah Rudy, and have the lyrics available to soak in.
Not sure they could handle "Fools Overture"
(Joking)🤣 They're a knowledgeable couple.
Fool's Overture rules!
The mixing was Genius!!!
Outstanding All around song!!!!!!!
Supertramp is my all time favorite group.
Please do “Hide in Your Shell” next.
Then “Fools Overture”
YES.
I think I wrote it on another Supertramp reaction video as well but Supertramp is on one level with Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. in my opinion. They were absolutely next level, instrumentally and vocally! 😊
