This album was huge upon release, you could not turn on the radio without hearing a song from it
thank you guys for reacting on Supertramp once again with this iconic and legendary song one of the best
Supertramp is still my favorite group. I saw Roger in concert a few years ago. He still sounds great.
(I never got a chance to see the group in the 70’s. But I have been a fan since then).
My uncle used to play the hell out of this AND somehow had the cardboard standup.
@@rbrearey LOL
Truth
The whole "Breakfast in America" album was great. "Crime of the Century" was one of the best ever.
Crime of the Century is my favorite Supertramp LP!
My favorite is "Even in the quietest moments..."
Yep, great album! Peace, Love!!
"Crime of the Century" AND "Even in the Quietest Moments..."
TOTAL GOLD!!!!!!! I was 20 when it came out!!!!!!
"What's she got not a lot". Always makes me chuckle
"Take The Long Way Home" would be another great Supertramp song to do.
It was the first one they reviewed from Supertramp 2 years ago and they've done many more since. Æ 🙏
This was one of my brother's favorites and he would sing it a lot. I can still hear it in my head. RIP bro..
RIH
I'm sorry for your loss. Rest in Heaven your brother. 🙏
Same here

This whole album was hot on the charts in 1979
This is one of the greatest albums of the 70s, period.
It didnt come out till 79
@@hollylooyeah 70's meaning the entire decade.
I discovered Supertramp in 1990. 34 years later I am still so grateful. 😊
Keep the Supertramp going! Even in the Quietest Moments is a fantastic album. "Fool's Overture" is 11 minutes of musical genius.
Absolutely!
One of my favorites!!!!
I agree. I listen to "Fool's Overture" at least several times a year. It's magical, orchestral glory!
That's probably my most favorite of Supertramp
there was a tv news intro whit that song in the 80s CFCF 12 i believe, in canada,
Don't forget Blood, Sweat and Tears when you talk about great horn groups! You've done a few of their songs. Definitely one of the best!
Yes!
Horns? Bill Chase (RIP August 1974)
Imagine the lives we were leading as 20-somethings in the magnificent, partytown wonderful 70’s.the atmosphere everywhere was get out and get down.
I so miss that greatest of all decades when life was so much simpler.
Saw Supertramp in Las Vegas. They were dressed in all white and all the instruments were black. Lights go down slowly and it was like they just disappeared. Freakin Awesome.😎
I’m lucky to have experienced Supertramp’s live performance in the 80s. Incredible concert.
Saw them twice at the Warner Theatre in DC!
Got to see them once in the 80s.
For Chicago, "Beginnings" is a must. The wall of horns, the drum solo, it's just *chef's kiss*.
The beauty of “Beginnings” is the 12-string guitar opening by Terry Kath.
The song was truly an intro of the group …
Most anything from the Terry Kath days. How's about "Free"?
I definitely second Beginnings
I remember my high school rehearsing 24-6 to 4 on my way back. Such musical talent. Always loved Questions 68 and 69. Remember playing it when I was a high school DJ. My station manager left me a note saying I played the best diversity of music he’d ever heard. Haha
@@laurarominger2073 Questions 67 & 68 is my second all-time favorite Chicago song - right behind In the Country. Of course, for me, there was no Chicago after Terry's death.
Yes, they used real instruments. I was a low brass player (which was not exactly the road to coolness as a late 70's teenager) so hearing the tuba and trombone in this song was always a thrill.
Yeah, trombone just doesn't draw the girls like a trumpet, guitar or drums. I was pretty good though, just not "cool"
The trombone and tuba played by a session musician, Dick "Slide" Hyde
Earth, Wind and Fire needs to be on anybody’s Best Horns list as well…
@@KenWins1 And Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
LOL! It's okay, I was learning the accordion back then, so I was in the same "non-chick" club.
No matter how many people love them. They will still be underrated.
I love your realization of current artist sampling classics like these from back in the days. And you’re right Amber, it is “Cupid’s Chokehold” from Gym Class Heroes (not Maroon 5).
AND...we might learn about other groups we'd never heard of...like Gym Class Heroes!! Voila Gym Class Heroes: Cupid's Chokehold ft. Patrick Stump [OFFICIAL VIDEO] ruclips.net/video/eiiU-Fky18s/видео.html
It's feature the singer from Fallout Out Boy
And to answer Amber's other question: Sampling and covers are legal as long as the original artist is credited and paid any royalties due. The only time there are lawsuits is when the credit and payments are not done (usually because the newer artist denies that it was a sample or cover).
This whole album is absolute gold. I was too young at the time to truly appreciate it but I sure do now.
70s gold at that YAAA hooo lol
You have gotten hooked on Supertramp exactly the same way we did when their albums first came out - so smooth, rockin, and funky, and totally unlike anyone else!
Their concert was amazing. They had suits on. So many instruments! Definitely classy group.
HUGE HUGE hit for Supertramp in 1979. Great choice 👌 ❤. I feel so incredibly lucky to have heard all these wonderful songs first hand...... To go back, for just one day/night. Aah the memories. ❤
They were slamming in concert. Loved their music from day one. Note one.
"Beginnings" by Chicago is a must! You both make me smile! Great reaction....love the carnival feel - didnt think of that!
This is my favourite Supertramp song and I am so glad you enjoyed it. Their lead singer Roger Hodgson said no one gets this song like the British but I think it has a universal appeal. The whole song plays up idea of someone unsatisfied with life and striving for the American Dream without really understanding the culture. One obvious line, he wants kippers for breakfast because that's fancy to him but a low class meal in Texas. It's about reaching for fame and celebrity without really knowing what that means. It's a joke but an earnest one.
"Lord is it mine" is a damn good one as well
Thank you for doing another Supertramp reaction. This song comes from yet another perfect album by the band.
My family played Supertramp's "Crime of the Century" at my cousins funeral. Still sends chills up my spine when I hear it. Chicago suggestion: "If You Leave Me Now".
Or "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"
They want MORE horns. "If You Leave Me Now" does not have the Chicago horn section.
Definitely “ If you leave me now “ Chicago
@@mitchridder4071 - never mind, I think they already did hard to say I'm sorry.
"If You Leave Me Now" -- yes!
Roger Hodgson's album "In the eye of the Storm" that he released after leaving Supertramp is one of my favorites.
Love Supertramp! Saw them in ‘80!Best musical concert I ever saw!🤘🔥
Lucky listened to them from beginning
Horns & woodwinds. That clarinet was fantastic. Supertramp was a fun house of music. Amber is on point. 😊
Saw them live in Vancouver Canada, years ago, and they were incredible. Supertramp and Electric Light Orchestra are my two staples from childhood AND I GOT TO SEE THEM BOTH LIVE!! And both brilliant!! Cheers!
Saw Supertramp in concert in 1983 before Roger left the band. And it was a mind blowing concert.
This entire album is amazing
I'm willing to bet this is the only rock song in existence with a tuba in the background LOL.
Fantastic album from a fantastic band.
✌️Peace✌️
For the life of me I couldn't remember what that instrument was called.
TY😂
@@roldanrobles8563 my pleasure sir
Ahhh… Haven’t listened to this song and album for a long time now… Breakfast In America is just awesome.
That clarinet solo is bangin’!
I dig the songs that pull off a solo with an unusual solo instrument. My favorite will always be the bagpipe solo in “Under the Milky Way”
@@futurereflections4097 agree!
Not a bad song on the entire LP. This took the US by storm when it was initially released and won many, many deserving accolades and awards. Take the Long Way Home has been my personal theme song ever since. Late one night Child of Vision came slowly on the radio, the first time I had heard it. I still feel goosebumps every time, just like the first.
Also won Awards for Album cover art.
ChicAgo _ Beginnings is a great song with lots of horns per usual. Thanks you two!
Kudos, for recognizing the sheer brilliance of the "Logical Song" Also my favorite from them. Supertramp, what else can we say, they were tremendous.
Breakfast in America was the first Supertramp album I bought way back in 1979, soon followed by Famous Last Words, Even In The Quietest Moments, Classics, Volume 9 and Crime Of The Century (and I think, in that very order). Every single song on this album is sheer musical genius, from start to finish: Gone Hollywood to Lord Is It Mine to Child Of Vision. Pure excellence! Peace & Love🕊❤
The cover band is Gym Class Heroes. The remake is called Cupid's Chokehold.
I love the way it seems Roger's singing and John's clarinet playing are talking to each other. It really shows on the Live In Paris video of this song.
Supertramp is such a musical treat. So much talent!😁
For people who knew Supertramp before the release of Breakfast in America, the album is considered in many ways as their attempt to really break into the American market and as such, it is a far more watered-down and commercial album than their previous 3, Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments. The latter of those 3 had been their previous peak, barely breaking top 20 on the album charts in the US, despite being top ten in Canada and throughout Europe. That being said, the Breakfast in America album has stood the test of time and did sound, and still sounds, different than much of the top 40 music of the time and given that it did achieve its intended goal of reaching no 1 in the US, one has to respect that. I'm not a huge fan of the album as, to me, it pales in comparison to Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments, but I can understand how people do like it and how it can serve as a gateway into their earlier work. School/Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Rudy, Give A Little Bit, Fool's Overture, Even in the Quietest Moments - you don't know Supertramp if you don't know these songs.
Snob
I agree breakfast in America got me hooked as a kid, because that’s all you heard, but their other albums are incredible.
it is true - and I have always thought this... but listening to them again, I am amazed at the level of production, the layering and usage of instruments is off the charts, even compared to Crime Of The Century. Each track is so cleverly built.
But I will take Crime Of The Century over Breakfast In America every time, mainly for the strength of every track on the album. Breakfast has a couple of weak tracks for my tastes and relies upon Take the long way home, Gone Hollywood, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast In America and Logical Song (which is a high hit rate compared to any other album, just not compared to Crime Of the century, where every track is superb)
I agree. I saw them live on their "Crime" and "Quietest Moments" tours. I get a lot of enjoyment from this album as it is very good but I absolutely love the previous 2 and "Crisis" was also very good.
@@KWayne6756 Exactly 🤫
Love Supertramp. Classic album. Call me crazy, but I swear you could mash this song up with “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt and it would sync up perfectly.
Shhh 🤫🤭
Good catch bro'! You're right.😁✌️
No Doubt - first thing I thought on opening notes. And I was a fan when both came out 🤔

Wouldn't waste my time. Just enjoy listening to the real music
😮 Another band got this jive first, Imagine that! I love seeing young people experience the greatest music that I grew up with. I love yous Jay and Amber; you make my day complete! :)
Bring on the Supertramp. More , more , more. Love it.❤️
This song is sooo amazing! It takes me right back to the of age of 13…those first few chords are so memorable. I remember listening to them at night on my AM transistor radio ☺️.
I’m so old!
Supertramp's albums like "Breakfast" are basically best appreciated listening to them in their entirety as they were true musicians and songwriters. It's a listening experience listening to a Supertramp record in that 70's era.
You guys always do a great job! 🎉
Earth Wind and Fire has an awesome, funky, horn section and they're just great musicians, great music.
💖💜💖💜💖💜💖
Yes, now I have the horn intro of September in my head😅
This was the album where Supertramp went to their most commercial sound, and corresponding commercial success. By far, the most impactful song on this album is "Child of Vision", which I know you two will LOVE. Please take a listen!
My absolute favorite! It takes me back to my childhood so baaaad. Fun fact: it was in the credits for one of the most popular quiz shows in Yugoslavia in the ‘80. ❤️❤️❤️
yup! gym class heroes sampled this in “cupid’s chokehold” with vocals from patrick stump from fall out boy. it was the breakout hit for GCH in 2005. and katy perry was in the video since she was dating travie mccoy at the time.
Breakfast in America is a masterpiece of an Album but my favorite song is The Logical Song
The thing about Supertramp, for me is that the arrangements are so, so good! I spend most of my attention listening to all of the things that are going on in the background! Amazing!
This Entire album is stellar, with every song being different. "RUDY" is an absolute gem, but then they all are.😊🎉❤
This entire album is great. I love every tune on it.
i too
"Cupids Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes, was a combo of this song, and their own song. It was a huge hit in 2005.
The entire album is outstanding...An awesome group...A beautiful song.
When I was in school all the cool, smart kids used to listen to Supertramp, Reo Speedwagon and Talking Heads, and the Breakfast in America album especially, it sort of went over my head as I was 12 in 1979 when this album came out but I remember the older cool kids were always talking about this and Talking Heads 77 and Nine Lives and High Infidelity by Reo Speedwagon, great memories
This album is definitely a masterpiece every song was a hit and it was a big influence on my generation definitely.
This was one of my all time favorite bands. Saw them live 3 times in Edmonton and once in Toronto. The Logical Song was their best from their first album, but Breakfast in America topped the charts right after it's release. I have fond memories of listening to 8-track tapes of the album on perpetual repeat while driving through the Rockies in my Camaro Berlinetta. Thanx you two for the lovely stream of memories concerning my misspent youth.
One of best selling LP of 1979 songs from the LP title track Breakfast in America The logical song Goodbye Stranger Take the long way home Supertramp had a that whole calendar year into 1980 I think this is the best work Supertramp has ever done keep up the great work guys.
LOVE Supertramp!
Rodgers Hodgsen had a great solo record. His single Sleeping With The Enemy is a great bop
I just watched the Chicago & Earth Wind & Fire 2004 concert on here and it was 2.5 hrs of phenomenal musicianship!! What an excellent pairing!! The horns from both sides!!! 👌🏼
I remember when this album came out. I was 13. The boy next door would play the record everyday. I was amazed that I never got sick of listening to it. I hated listening to repetition, but not when its Supertramp. Only band ever to have that effect on me 🔥
“CHICAGO “!!
1. JUST YOU AND ME, horns, horns, horns and beautiful love song , beautiful lyrics!!!❤
2. BEGINNINGS
3.QUESTIONS 67 AND 68
My favorite Supertramp album.
All their albums are good with “Brother where you bound,” probably my favorite.
If you ever touch on Supertramp, one of my favorites was 'My kind of Lady", which had a beautiful sax solo. Kids wave hi.
I sang “The Logical Song” the in the 6th grade talent show. MY FAVORITE ALSO!! But this song is also a goosebump evoking song. ❤️❤️❤️
"Old Days" from Chicago is a good one.
The songs you need to put on your list by Supertramp are "Rudy" and "Asylum"!
200% agreed 👍🏻
Just another iconic album released in the 70s
The Breakfast In America album was huge… according to the internet it’s at #207 of the top 1000 albums of all time. I have listened to this album countless times… it’s great!!!
Hide in Your Shell is another great one by them!
Awesome band and song!!❤
Love to see young people get excited about music like this (what I grew up with). Knowing snippets of a song by hearing samples is so cool to me!
One of my first concerts at 14 in the early 70s it was spectacular
Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Not a bad song on the whole album. 😎 ❤❤❤😎
Monster album. Circus-like sound on this song with the womp-womp of the horn and the killer vocals.
Every song on this Album should be on their greatest hits Album !!!!!!!!
Blood Sweat and Tears, Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Ides of March, Tower of Power. The last two are kinda funky with horns. ENJOY! :)
Chase (Bill Chase passed too early, August 1974), and Canada’s Lighthouse.
@@w9gb Lighthouse!
CHICAGO!! YES Please do "Introduction" as I have begged you to do several times. It's the first song on the first Chicago albums and has all the crunchy delicious and gooey parts you love about Chicago. It is their absolute essence in one song. Back me up everyone.
"Saturday in the park" is the perfect next Chicago song for you two
I saw SuperTramp in Vancouver in 1983..at The new Stadium..lol, already torn down and rebuilt..Opening act was Brian Adams..he’s from there so makes sense.. He was a dishwasher at a restaurant I used to go to, called the Tomahawk. Anyhow..brings back memories..Fck, I’m old now..that was 40 years ago, and I was 18 then, graduated that year....sigh..memories huh?
God Bless
Adam Levine’s group is Maroon 5.
For horns I think old school: Blood Sweat and Tears, The Ohio Players, and Sly and the Family Stone.
Speaking of funhouse music. The first song that came to mind for me is a short instrumental from the Lost Boys soundtrack, To The Shock of Miss Louise. You could react to every song of that soundtrack.
Have you done “give a little” by them? Great song, great message
They have done Give A Little Bit and now 7 others
Love watching your reaction videos. I check in daily. I re-subscribed to your channel today when I saw that I was no longer subcribed. I do not know for how long I've been unsubscribed, but I have been watching and enjoying all of your videos. I saw your "Rudy" movie reaction last week and I hoped your next Supertramp song would be "Rudy," as it is one of my favorites. I'm not disappointed though as this is also one of my favorites. Of course, making a list of my top 10 Supertramp songs would be difficult as I like so many of theirs. I'd like to see what you both think of "Rudy." It was not one of my favorites when I was younger but it has become one after repeated listenings.
Every song on that album could had been a hit back in the day!!!!!!! Total Gold!!!!!!
Pretty much WAS
@@TonyM1961 Well, the radio stations only played a few of the songs off that album.
Every track on this LP is fantastic! Including Logical Song.✌️🎶
Supertramp were a British rock band that experienced massive global success in 1979 with their sixth album Breakfast in America. Wonderful band :)
Supertramp was a uniquely talented band. I first saw them in Frankfurt in 86. It was their comeback after a brief hiatus after losing Rodger Hogson. It was the Brother Where You Bound tour and That was a great album in itself. Please review the songs on this album too. Like a Cannonball, Better Days, Brother where you bound where great songs the displayed their musical talents with rock, some good horn sections, and musicianship. Even David Gilmour of Pink Floyd got a chance to dabble with his guitar in brother where you bound. No mistaking his sound and style.
You need to do Sugar Hill Gang, Rapper's Delight. Fantastic song.
A number of songs from the album "Crime of the Century" really kicked off Supertramp as a super band. Listen to these songs from that album: "Bloody Well Right" - awesome, "Give a Little Bit" - been remixed by current artists, "Crime of the Century" - this is a masterpiece in my opinion. Another great songs by them is: "Dreamer"
Love that low brass, too! One of the best songs of this era, imho. Fun, catchy, clever lyrics, makes you want to move. Great stuff - thanks for highlighting it.
I feel so blessed to have Supertramp as a significant part of my 8th grade soundtrack. Thanks for sharing!
Rudy might be their most underrated song, gotta hit that one sometime if you can
This is my favorite Supertramp song. Thank you! It did make me really sad though when Amber said she realized back in the day, artists actually played real instruments. I guess we just always took that for granted!
Also, I looked it up and the Gym Class Heroes song that sample this is "Cupid's Chokehold", but Maroon 5, Adam Levine's band, did not (to my knowledge) sample it.
Well, we couldn't do much else. Electronic instruments hadn't been in vented.
@@nzlemming I still consider electronic instruments like synths to be real instruments. You still have to have knowledge of a keyboard, reading and writing music, etc. I think she was referring more to the fact that so many artists sample older songs, rather than playing new material.
Dos ‘sample’ mean copy??
@@hellokimmy68 For sure, but back then, we didn't even have that.
@@jodyjackson5475 I think there's a fine line, but generally with sampling, you have permission of the original artist (or their estate) to use just a portion of a song to enhance a new song. When you rip off an entire riff or more, without the creator's knowledge or permission, I think that's where some people have gotten into trouble. At least that's my understanding.
