This is my favourite Supertramp song and I am so glad you enjoyed it. Their lead singer Roger Hodgson said no one gets this song like the British but I think it has a universal appeal. The whole song plays up idea of someone unsatisfied with life and striving for the American Dream without really understanding the culture. One obvious line, he wants kippers for breakfast because that's fancy to him but a low class meal in Texas. It's about reaching for fame and celebrity without really knowing what that means. It's a joke but an earnest one.

A lot of 1970s funk bands have horns, but most of them started to lose the horn section in the early 1980s when synth & drum machine based electrofunk took over. A few more recent acts you might want to check out are Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings, Soil & PIMP Sessions. Sharon Jones passed away a few years ago, but a couple of the horn players from her band now play with The Roots on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". On a related note, the group Naturally 7 and singer Raul Midón both make horn sounds with their voices.

Next year my family moved to Phoenix and my school had a better music teacher. He was disappointed in me when I lost interest in 8th grade. I have read recently that clarinet has really weird design for the note controls. My daughter is a much more accomplished musician. Violin, piano, and a little guitar.

Supertramp was a uniquely talented band. I first saw them in Frankfurt in 86. It was their comeback after a brief hiatus after losing Rodger Hogson. It was the Brother Where You Bound tour and That was a great album in itself. Please review the songs on this album too. Like a Cannonball, Better Days, Brother where you bound where great songs the displayed their musical talents with rock, some good horn sections, and musicianship. Even David Gilmour of Pink Floyd got a chance to dabble with his guitar in brother where you bound. No mistaking his sound and style.

HUGE HUGE hit for Supertramp in 1979. Great choice 👌 ❤. I feel so incredibly lucky to have heard all these wonderful songs first hand...... To go back, for just one day/night. Aah the memories. ❤

You guys are so adorable! Till before today, I only watched you reacting to movies (of which I have TON of recommendations,) but now that I see you doing Supertramp, Holy Moly! You guys, at your age, enjoying Supertramp???!! Wow. I'm older than you guys, obviously, but I first saw them as the opening band, the OPENING band, as a teenager in Montreal (their first stop in North America,) can't remember the name of the place but somewhere on St. Helen's Island, I think, hundreds of us sitting on the ground in the outside smoking pot and drinking beer. And THEY, Supertramp, weren't even the one we call came for! "Breakfast in America" that you chose is a lovely song, absolutely, but my fav of them, possibly one of my favs of all, is "Hide in Your Shell." It's on their "Crime of the Century" album, which also includes "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." It's probably the most underestimated album in rock history. Anyway, to sum up, I don't do RUclips comments very often. You have my name now, check me out, then, if you want, friend me on Facebook. Otherwise, keep up the good work! :)

I saw Supertramp when they did there Breakfast In America Tour July 19, 1979 at the CNE Stadium in Toronto and having been a fan from 71 it was so great to see their new style but of course they played all the big ones from their earlier albums. Saw them many times throughout their time together but this tour was for me their finest.

For people who knew Supertramp before the release of Breakfast in America, the album is considered in many ways as their attempt to really break into the American market and as such, it is a far more watered-down and commercial album than their previous 3, Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments. The latter of those 3 had been their previous peak, barely breaking top 20 on the album charts in the US, despite being top ten in Canada and throughout Europe. That being said, the Breakfast in America album has stood the test of time and did sound, and still sounds, different than much of the top 40 music of the time and given that it did achieve its intended goal of reaching no 1 in the US, one has to respect that. I'm not a huge fan of the album as, to me, it pales in comparison to Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments, but I can understand how people do like it and how it can serve as a gateway into their earlier work. School/Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Rudy, Give A Little Bit, Fool's Overture, Even in the Quietest Moments - you don't know Supertramp if you don't know these songs.

it is true - and I have always thought this... but listening to them again, I am amazed at the level of production, the layering and usage of instruments is off the charts, even compared to Crime Of The Century. Each track is so cleverly built.
But I will take Crime Of The Century over Breakfast In America every time, mainly for the strength of every track on the album. Breakfast has a couple of weak tracks for my tastes and relies upon Take the long way home, Gone Hollywood, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast In America and Logical Song (which is a high hit rate compared to any other album, just not compared to Crime Of the century, where every track is superb)

I agree. I saw them live on their "Crime" and "Quietest Moments" tours. I get a lot of enjoyment from this album as it is very good but I absolutely love the previous 2 and "Crisis" was also very good.

When I was in school all the cool, smart kids used to listen to Supertramp, Reo Speedwagon and Talking Heads, and the Breakfast in America album especially, it sort of went over my head as I was 12 in 1979 when this album came out but I remember the older cool kids were always talking about this and Talking Heads 77 and Nine Lives and High Infidelity by Reo Speedwagon, great memories
