@@cottonplant100 Yes!! Agree. Beautiful song and vocals, did reach #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968, but seems to have disappeared from memory for most people. Typical of a song that lacks a memorable hook, but the song is incredibly beautiful for sure.
Dave Clark was the drummer and the leader of the band but the main singer was the organist Mike Smith. His vocals were the driving force for most of their hits - and they had a lot of top-40 hits in the mid-60's and were actually about as big as the Beatles for a couple years. They were my favorite British Invasion group until they faded away in the late 60's. If you like Mike Smith's gritty voice - check out these two - "Do You Love Me" and "I Like It Like That.
I had the privilege of seeing Mike Smith perform at the Rock Hall of Fame in late 2002 or early 2003 when I was 16. It was an intimate concert with his Rock Engine band. He performed some new stuff, a lot of Dave Clark Five, and even played a little classical on a piano. I got to meet him after, talk with him, got a picture with him, and he autographed my vinyl copy of their Greatest Hits LP from 1966. It's shame what happened to him. I'm from a military family, and my dad moonlighted as a club manager when we were stationed in Spain in 1964. I was 7 yrs old and my brothers were teenagers. His club had family day on Sundays, and we were there when the Dave Clark Five was playing. I got to meet them in person when Dad introduced them to us! Such nice guys! I had a great day that day! Thanks for reacting to this old gem! ✌💙✌
The Dave Clark Five was the first concert I ever saw. They were huge for a period of time. Mike Smith had a powerful voice and sadly passed away shortly before the DC5 was inducted into the R R Hall of Fame. As far as a song to review, I agree with others that "Because" would be a superb choice.
I always thought it was very funny (odd funny) that Peter Noone had his teeth fixed after he stopped making hit records. They were just a sweet pop band but did put out some very good pop records & let's face it, everyone's mother loved him.
My sister, 10 years older than me, introduced me to their music when I was a little bitty kid. They’ve got some fantastic songs. Found a greatest hits album a few years ago- so good.
One of the pioneers of MoTown, Marv Johnson, wrote and first recorded this song with Tamla Records, back when I was at junior school. One of my roomies bought it and we laughed every time we pre-teens heard it. I think Marvin Gaye sang it too.
Jay & Amber, around this same time, Jimmy Soul had an equally fun song with equally thoughtful lyrics....please, please sample his "If You Want to be Happy For the Rest of Your LIfe!"
You two made my night with your reactions to the "nature didn't give you such a beautiful face line", that first time you heard it!🤣The songwriter was just trying to make the point that the girl still had that "it factor" for him, even if others couldn't see beyond superficial things...but he probably could have stated it a little better, right? LOL The Dave Clark 5 were very popular in the mid-60's, and at one point they even out-sold the Beatles.
Best laugh I've had in a week!! Hahaha!!! I clicked on this, thinking it was a different song with a similar title, and found that I've never heard this song, although I'm old enough to remember the Dave Clark Five. I was about ready to click off (because I didn't much care for the song) when they let that insult fly, and your guys' reactions put me on the floor, especially Amber's comment. Hahaha!!
Synchronicity…The last few days I’ve revisited the DC5 in a deep dive. Once again, fans need to watch the masterful presentation TOM HANKS delivers describing growing listening to this band, the connections to society’s transitions, and pure joy of music as he inducts The Dave Clark Five into the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame. Legendary. On RUclips.
That is exactly what the songwriter was saying! Too many put too much stock in superficial things, but the chemistry between them is what really made him fall in love her!
Give "Glad All Over" a listen. It reached No.1 in the UK in 1964, knocking The Beatles, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, off the top spot. It also reached No.6 on the US Billboard Chart.
At one point during the British Invasion, only the Beatles were outselling The Dave Clark Five. They had 17 big hits in just a 3-year period. Check out 2 great songs from them called "Any Way You Want It" and "Because."
Love the Dave Clark Five, but the original by Marv Johnson was better. He did another great song "I Love the Way You Love" that had great female backup singers. He was one of my favorites back then.
Written by Berry Gordy, certainly much better than this monstrosity, probably one of the first bands to suggest the RR Hall of Fame had run out of ideas.
@@tombombara actually, this monstrosity made it to number 7 on the Billboard charts, which of course, was higher than the original, so obviously somebody liked it.
"Oh! Nature didn't give you such a beautiful face." Loved your hilarious reaction to this. The DC5 was a top British invasion band that put out some of the biggest hits during 1964-67. Yes guys, DC5 has quite a catalog to checkout! My faves are "Catch Me If You Can" & "Can't You See That She's Mine". They also have a great ballad "Because".
My first rock n roll / pop concert performance in December 1964. I went with my best friend ( RIP Ted) and my dad . My mother was a ticket broker for the agency that booked them . Played thru the auditorium PA and all you could hear was screams of young girls. I was a 8 year old 3rd grader. The other side of the DC5 is a sweet ballad called Because I Love You which years later John Lennon’s son Julian Lennon did a great cover of it. The DC5 outsold the Beatles in the UK in 1964.
In the 70's Showaddywaddy also did a version of this song. Other hits they did were ' the moon of love', 'When' and 'Three sets to heaven'. More songs of the time.
She evidently has a great personality and that's what's important. This is a cover of a 50s song so at least the Dave Clark 5 can't be blamed for the lyrics. 😂
This song was already an early Motown hit for Marv Johnson. But this hits with a harder R&B rhythm than the original. The "horn you push in and out" is a trombone. (Painful 5th grade memories creeping up 🥲😆)
At one point Dave Clark 5 was going toe to toe with The Beatles. Dave Clark became one of the riches performers because he always owned the masters and had control of his music. Jump down the rabbit hole there’s plenty to find.
Lloyd Price (1933-2021) sang this in the 50s. The "whoa whoa whoa" part reminded me it was his song. The horn section was The Soul Music or Apollo Theater type sound.
