Some years ago, I had the considerable blessing and privilege of meeting the late, great Marv Johnson, who did the original version of You Got What It Takes in 1960. I asked him what he thought about the Dave Clark Five's version of it. He was most generous in his praise for it. "I thought that horn arrangement was brilliant", he said. "I wish I'd done my own version like that". Fun Fact: The Dave Clark Five's You Got What It Takes LP on Epic is as good overall as is this single. Magnificent.
Mike Smith was certainly among the very best, at the top. He had the perfect all around voice that could be tender on one song and GROWL on another. Not easy to do! If he wasn't in DAVE CLARK 5, he would have been snatched up by another band and would have been successful anywhere with a voice like that. Does anyone out there think that Paul McCartney looks alot like Mike Smith?
Ah Mike Smith. Very cool, accomplished, proper singer and musician. DC5 were a tour de force. Of their time, yet timeless. And they are/were all Palace fans?
The Beatles took pop music to different levels as they evolved like no other band in the 60s. DC5 made more exciting, high energy, feel good music. It was almost like DC5 never left 1964. Thanks to Mike Smith (RIP) for unbelievable vocal ability that is so raw and unique (like John Lennon RIP, but possibly better).
Back then, I was in a band called the Septones. While every other band was doing the Beatles, we were doing the DC5. We also dressed like them with white pants etc. Through a friend, I got 4 tickets, 5th row center for their concert in Carnegie Hall. I think it was on guitarist Lenny Davidson's birthday. While we were waiting for the show to start, we were having a cigarette in the back, (you could smoke in the hall then). When the show started we went running down the aisle to our seats, and people were grabbing at us because they thought we were them because we were wearing our band outfits. P.S. Am I the only one who thinks that Mike Smith looks A LOT like Paul McCartney.

Dave received a writing credit for most of them as part of the agreement but he never wrote anything. He collected the royalties and put the band on salary wages.
And Dave should have shared the wealth. Shame on him . He actually stole from the rest of the band . Especially Mike Smith did 90% of the work . And Dave still reaps the rewards
I love these guys! The Dave Clark 5!
Me too
@@annettebolec6940I love The Dave Clark 5 what about The Rolling Stones my favorite bands of course are The Rolling Stones and The Dave Clark 5
Brilliant song, brilliantly produced, brilliant vocals. Brilliant.
Ever need a smile? Hit play. Listen to those opening horns and enjoy.
You said it!! ❤❤❤
Those guys were the best. An I think they never got credit they deserved. Dave was a great business. Man. An he did let corporate rip them off like they so many. I believe that's why we don't here alot bout them now. But they were a very talented group. An one could sing like Mike. THANKS. DC 5
Loved this song! Makes you SMILE!

Great video of a great song. So wonderful to actually see the camera on Mike Smith singing. It was nice to see the other members of DC5 while also showing Mike singing the lead.

Very few songs are covered better than the original-this is one that does.
Yep ! Should have been Mike Smith and the Dave Clark Five. What an amazing voice Mike Smith had, not to mention great song writer and musician !
Always loved Mike Smith's voice, from way back in the 60s through today 💙🖤💙🖤💙
Mike Smith!!….easy journey…you brought joy to many….
record for # of appearances on Ed Sullivan Show....18!
You Got What It Takes was a big hit song in 1967 by The Dave Clark Five.
Sadly only got to 28 in the uk .
They were always smiling! Such an innocent time!
i think the best lead vocalist of any british band of the 60s
Mike Smith - was yes, the best lead singer of all the British bands. Christmas, 1970, in Vietnam Mike sent me a nice letter signed with his full name and also a signed photo. Plus, a "care package" some GREAT cookies from some bakery in England - which I shared with all my buddies. I just hated to see him died so early. He was a great guy and what a singer, organist, pianist and all-round entertainer. Also, my respects to the families of Dennis Payton (great tenor sax) and Rick Huxley (great guitarist) sorry that they aren't with us. I got to see them live three times - GREAT shows. Roger C. Apart from Steve Winwood with Spencer Davis...
SirTwangabangalot Or Steve Marriott from The Small Faces.
Ya can't leave out Roger Daultrey.
7 tosspots don't like this? Theres no accounting for bad taste. Mike Smith in unbeatable form, absolutely brilliant version of this one, great backing too
Some years ago, I had the considerable blessing and privilege of meeting the late, great Marv Johnson, who did the original version of You Got What It Takes in 1960.
March 26, 2022. This performance is from the Ed Sullivan Show, March 26, 1967, 55 years ago today.
So simple an arrangement too, unlike today’s mega sets.
Yeah, looks a little like Mike.
I think so too.
With all due respect to all of my fellow commentators: Flat outlive this band. Timeless! IM 64. Still diggin it SO GKAD THEYRE IN R & R HOF!
Wonderful song, rock n roll rules.
Ah Mike Smith. Very cool, accomplished, proper singer and musician.
DC5 were a tour de force. Of their time, yet timeless. And they are/were all Palace fans?
one of their best! just a fantastic band! in the era of the best music, if you weren't there., you missed big time!
I got to see Mike Smith 2 times when toured the US . He was fantastic.
Another great tune from the Steve Smith 5!
Mike Smith was a doll.
He's a cutie, for sure. I guess by today's standard he'd be the Biebs! :)
He was so HOT!
Very well said. Perfect, concise comparison of DC5 and Beatles. Love them both.
I guess you are so right.
Basically you are right but they did come out of the box a little bit with stuff like Hold On !
Just wonderful
Very talented MUSIC Group!!
Awesome
SET MY SOUL ON FIRE,,,,
Love the horn, it just propels the song along.
I love the brass instruments' sound coming from a sax. Doesn't matter to me, though, because the DC5 had it going on!! I STILL listen to them some 50+ years later.
Mike Smith was a phenomenal vocalist!
i went to school with the late dennis
payton, in the sixties i worked in a local factory with him, when they made glad all over they were off to the states, they were massive there!
i went to many of their live shows,
brilliant cant describe how good they were.
Adoro a dc5, musica con ritmo y contenido. Forever dc5.
I Love Those Lyrics!! ("and nature didn't give you such a beautiful face", lol). I Almost Forgot About This Song. YES!! When Everything Wasn't "Politically Correct"!!
And That Sexy Saxophone!
Mike Smith, I'll see you in my Heaven.
Me too...
They seemed to be having the time of their lives.
I can only imagine the excitement of being a famous band in the 1960s!
Glen Campbell just passed. I put him and Mike Smith in the same category- It took their deaths for people (including me) to appreciate how good they were...
LOVE LOVE that green shirt so pretty
luv it for 60 years...
Wish I could have Mike's Vox!! Wonder what ever happened to it through the years??
