The voice of the great Mike Smith, one of the most underrated singers from the British Invasion, yea I could listen to this song "Over and Over", the DC5 ruled.............
Cut originally by the late Marv Johnson, written and produced by Berry Gordy (shortly before he launched the Motown empire). The Brits sure loved the sounds of the Motor City! DC5 lead singer/keyboardist Mike Smith (RIP) gave their version some rockin' soul indeed!
Marv was Berry's first act to be signed on to "Tamla" which evolved into Motown. In a finger-snapping / soulful Jackie Wilson style, Marv debuted onto the charts in '59 with "Come To Me" . One of my personal faves was 1960's "You've Got To Move Two Mountains."
A great cover by the DC5! The American Top-40 reached its peak in the first months of 1967 through thhe Summer of Love. What an amazing crop of Rock & Roll.

Rumor has it that this song was a trial balloon for a possible Mike Smith solo career managed by Dave Clark, of course. The single is notable because unlike earlier singles, this one features only Mike on vocals, no double tracking by him and no backing singers. Not sure if any other band members were playing on this track. Also, I remember reading in one of the music business magazines around this time that Mike and Dave were touring US radio stations by themselves (to later join the rest of the group in NYC for The Ed Sullivan Show.)
