- The pageant world is mourning the loss of Bob Barker, host of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants from 1967 to 1987, who passed away in his Hollywood Hills home in California on 26 August 2023.
His 21-year stints as MC of both pageants are unlikely to ever be surpassed, and they may well have been even longer had Bob not quit over the ongoing use (at the time) of real fur coats in the winners’ prize packages.
Less than four months shy of his 100th birthday, Bob was known to the world-at-large as a legendary US TV game show host (Truth or Consequences 1956-1975 and The Price Is Right (1972-2007). But to pageant fans he was the front man for so many historic moments in Miss Universe history.
Capturing just a handful of those moments, here’s a little tribute I’ve pulled together in honour of Bob Barker, Miss Universe legend. Also featuring some of my favourite semifinal interviews.

Great host and an even better interviewer. But his last interview with Cecilia Bolocco from CHILE, Miss Universe 1987 was absolutely mind-blowing. Thank you for all those extraordinary years of grace, wit and entertainment. R.I.P. Mr. Bob Barker.
You know, it just occurred to me that he and Cecilia Bolocco had unbelievable chemistry together. If he had stayed on she could’ve been his co host.
There's no question about him being the best host at Miss Universe. He made the interview part the most enjoyable of all times wiith his original and spontaneous comments. May he rest in peace. Thanks for this wonderful tribute!!!
For the record, my favorite host of Miss USA/Miss Universe/Miss Teen USA was none other than the late Dick Clark.

@@ronalsinghol6299 The answer to your question is . . . Bob Goen (of 'Entertainment Tonight' fame). As a matter of fact, Goen hosted Miss USA/Miss Universe/Miss Teen USA in 1994.

There were saying that his questions to Miss Chile put great help to Miss Chile’s crown, but somehow Miss Chile great personality, charm & her wisdom, she took advantage of the moment & slayed her interview & the 1987 crown. ( a great fan from Singapore-host of 1987)
I agree. Bob also offered a commercial to Miss Chile in 1986 during her interview. The outcome was completely different that time around. Miss Chile 1986 made it to the ten semifinalist in fourth place, but she did not go to be part of the five finalist. She didn't speak English as Miss Chile 1987 did.

I was smiling all through the Interview Highlights segment. I love it! Ms Japan and Ms Norway were naturally funny. Ms Chile's personality was great, no wonder she won that year.
Miss Chile in 1976 was especially funny and charming. She supposedly know very little English but it seems she only understood it when Bob complemented her.
Also really funny was Bob's interview with Miss Belgium in 1981 who thought the state "Georgie" was very strange.

thank you so much for the tribute. Bob Barker is a legend. I did not know much about Miss Universe until it was held in my country, Singapore in 1987. It was huge then. I was rooting for Miss Italy cos she was stunning and it was a shock that she finished ahead of Michelle Royer, the then Miss USA. I remembered Miss Colombia been disappointed for winning the Miss Photogenic because she thought it will affect her chances of winning the crown. She was the hot favorite then and did not even make the semi finals. Singapore did a great job hosting the event
Miss Colombia beat out Cecilia at the Miss South America pageant. Cecilia competed at both pageants in the same gown. Goes to show two different set of judges sometimes will have different outcomes.

Bob Barker ensured that the ladies’ personalities got highlighted during interviews. He was quite a gentleman with them, and he kept the banter light and made the candidates feel secure, comfortable, and confident.
Reg the palm reading of Ms. India in 1973, her palm reading was so true! 😮
He was the best MU host ever, had command of the stage and the proceedings. RIP Mr. Bob Barker.

Thanks for this wonderful video collection memories of the late Bob Barker. I miss all those personal and fun interviews of the past era. He brought out the charm and charisma of Cecilia Bolocco who was crowned in my country, Singapore. That was how I was introduced to the world of Miss Universe. I miss those opening numbers of candidates in their national costumes 😊 RIP Bob

And I think, the best interview/s in this video are Farzana Habib (India 1973) at 6:15, Andrea Silva Lopéz (Uruguay 1985) at 11:13, Roberta Capua (Italy 1987) at 12:58 and his last, which is Cecilia Bolocco (Chile 1987) at 13:36, in a mixture of English and Spanish and in which he tried to translate her third statement.
And the other most hilarious interviews are: Harumi Maeda (Japan '72) at 5:47, Bente Lihaug (Norway '76) 'Taller Than You' at 7:23 😂😅😂
The contestants back then seems a lot less guarded and spontaneous.

one of the best host in American television. I like watching The Price is Right. I started watching Miss Universe in 1985 when Puerto Rico Deborah Carthy-Deu won. Even up to this time I still watch.
I can’t thank you enough for this. Bob was my hero and like you I think Miss Universe peaked in the 1980’s. I loved the interview with Cecelia but he was killing it in 1985. My two favorite interviews he ever did were Miss Uruguay and Miss Zaire. My best friend and I quote “I don’t think I can go on now! and “I wonder what they have in Zaire?” on a regular basis. I watched that pageant within minutes of hearing about his passing. Thank you so much for this absolute treasure!!!! I love all of your videos but this was really special for me 😊

Miss India 1973 read his palm for the future and predicted correctly, that he would live a long live ( died at 99 ) and she wanted to discuss his "affairs" but he stopped her ( he was involved in several affairs on the job in the future)

Thank you for this tribute. Like many I first knew Bob via The Price is Right as a kid, but I've been making my way through Miss Universe pageants of the 70s and 80s recently and have really grown fond of him as the host. I briefly looked around yesterday at the MU and some MU fan IG accounts and was surprised to see that they didn't say anything to acknowledge his passing, which was disappointing. RIP to Bob.

i wish Dominique Van Eeckhoudt (Miss Belgium 1981) semi final interview was included, this is also one of the most iconic interview Bob Barker did in the history of the Miss Universe pageant, I recall the pageant was held in New York City.

1.Mastery and levity-Bob Barker puts the delegates at ease in a segment (interview)otherwise tension filled allowing the delegates to laugh, make faces thus bringing out their personalities coz otherwise w/out doing so becomes a disadvantage for non-English speaking delegates
2.integrity:a PETA advocate-he resigned after failing to convince the MUO to drop the fur and mink coats from the prize package
3.the interviews where not to brag about intelligence nor to demean (or make them look stupid) but over-all how relaxed they can be faced in such a tensed competitive envt and have humor and grace-during those times the interviews where the highlight coz that's where one can from the lowest in prelims can get noticed and zoom up in a blink of an eye. The spontaneity that Barker commands so well is like well oiled dance between the delegates-it convinces you bar none why that particular country won

He certainly hosted the first MU in Europe, although Cyprus (2000) and Russia (2013) have joined the list of European host countries.

Two other good interviews would’ve been Miss Poland in 1986 being asked about the Chicago Bears and Miss Philippines in 1987. She said something about not watching the Price is Right in the Philippines but would watch it live in Los Angeles if she won Miss Universe.
Funny you should mention those two interviews as I had them cut and shortlisted for inclusion in the video. But I needed to trim it down and the punchlines weren’t quite as effective as the others. But definitely some of my favourites, too!

Bob Barker is one of the big reasons many Americans use to watch Miss USA and Miss Universe. It was very disappointing that the new Miss USA 🇺🇸 and Miss Teen USA director didn’t mission, Bob Barker at all at the Miss USA 2023 competition 😢
Yes, I agree it was disappointing, though I hate it say it but I wasn’t hugely surprised. Hopefully Khun Anne will hear it loud and clear from the fans that we’d like something done for Bob during MU. I’ll see what little role I can play in that!

Bob Barker so loved our barong tagalog, traditional Filipino men's long sleeved formal wear when he hosted Miss Universe 1974 here in Manila that he wore one again during one of the functions at Miss Universe 1975 in San Salvador, El Salvador. Rest In Eternal Peace, Bob Barker.🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
The two 1976 interviews were very funny as was Germany in 1983. Bob was great helping contestants during their interviews. Two examples of that were Germany in 1979 and Philippines in 1984. Bob interview with Kim Seelbrede at MU 1981 has often been mentioned as the reason she did not do well considering she was second after preliminaries.
