  • While I’m preparing the grand finale of my three-part series, Scoring Miss Universe, I thought I’d share another quick clip in honour of the recent Miss USA competition. One of the most incredible achievements in all of pageantry is the five consecutive victories for Texas at Miss USA in the 1980s.
Trained by the famed duo "GuyRex", then-Miss Texas USA state directors Richard Guy and Rex Holt, the above queens swept all before them between 1985 and 1989 to claim one of the most fiercely contested national pageants in the world.
This quintet were unstoppable at Miss USA, but they fell just short of capturing the Miss Universe crown in their respective years:
🇺🇸 1985: Laura Harring (Top 10 at Miss Universe)
    🇺🇸 1986: Christy Fichtner (1st Runner-Up)
    🇺🇸 1987: Michelle Royer (2nd Runner-Up)
    🇺🇸 1988: Courtney Gibbs (Top 10)
    🇺🇸 1989: Gretchen Polhemus (2nd Runner-Up)
Nonetheless, these amazing queens deserve some huge adulation for a feat that may never be repeated!
The “Texas Aces” feature in Part 2 of Scoring Miss Universe, in which I look at the success rate of women who won the Preliminaries and Semifinals at Miss Universe and went on to capture the crown.

Michelle Royer qualified in first place after the prelims, the venue was my home country, Singapore, she was in second place most of the time until she was barely edged by Miss Italy in the last minute. Miss Italy was very very stunning.

Their five peat win at Miss USA was a major turning point at the start of Miss USA 1990, when they decided to change the format (Final 3) to make more excitement and to prevent Texas from winning more Miss USA crowns. Texas ended their winning streak and the first African American to win Miss USA.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  3 года назад +8

Yes, it definitely had a huge impact, and it was about time an African-American woman won Miss USA - crazy to think Carole was the first only 30 years ago. Nonetheless the Miss Texas USAs of that era was so well-prepared, really a cut above the rest at that time - an amazing achievement.

    • @mentorshipprogram777

The Miss Universe organization didn’t have anything or did anything to PREVENT OR STOP Texas from winning more. Texas had a group that was two gentlemen who were over the state of Texas USA pageant. They left and things went downhill. Miss USA 🇺🇸 was strong with all the Miss Texas USA 🇺🇸 winners even after the 5 years in a row. Miss USA 🇺🇸 1995 won Miss Universe the late Chelsi Smith R.I.P. 😔🙏🏼

I will indeed do some predictions for Miss Universe - I’ve steered clear up to now as I wanted to establish the channel a little more before I threw myself to the lions, so to speak! Getting involved in predictions will presumably broaden the appeal of my channel, but also opens me up to the nasty comments I’ve so far managed to avoid by just sticking to facts, and less about opinions. But I’m actually looking forward to doing some predictions, as I’ve been doing them personally for many years now! Will have to see how mine compare! All of these winners were prepared by then directors of the Miss Texas USA pageant, GuyRex. They even made a documentary about them and all that went into preparing a title-holder for their next competition. My favorite thing of theirs was that they expected all of their representatives to have what they referred to as crown hair. Simply stated, you should anticipate winning and it should be easy for the crown to be placed on your head. And if you look at each of their crownings you will see that the crown goes right on. They left the Miss Texas organization and started working with contestants in Hawai'i. I'm not sure if they were working independently at that time or if they were directly affiliated with a state pageant organization. What I do know is that they had a hand in preparing Miss America 1992, Carolyn Suzanne Sapp; the first ever Miss America from Hawai'i. I've always been curious if they were involved with the Miss Hawai'i USA contest in 1997, the year that produced Brook Lee, who went on the become Miss USA and then Miss Universe.

    • @robinquinc329
      @robinquinc329 2 года назад +1

I never heard that they worked with contestants in Hawaii! I do know that after they were kicked out if Miss USA they started the Miss World America contest and chose the American delegate to Miss World from 1992 through 1997. The first two years were separate pageants and then 1994 and 1995, they produced them in association with Miss Mexico-World. For 1996 and 1997, they chose the girls themselves. They lived in California for several years before returning to Texas. Rex Holt passed in 2015 and Richard Guy passed in 2019. Pageants have not been the same since.

@@robinquinc329 -- Thanks Robin for this additional info. I was only a teenager when the five-peat occurred and caught the documentary about them somewhat by accident, but I enjoyed watching pageantry so much it sticks out in my memory. I don't recall where I learned about their having prepared Carolyn but when their name was mentioned I immediately connected it back Miss Texas and the documentary. Their legacy is undeniable. It's too bad that they were never able to produce a MU winner. They sent five amazing women from Texas and each of them did well but none were able to secure the crown for the USA. It took six more years before a Miss USA became Miss Universe and it should be no surprise that it was a woman from Texas. The amazing Chelsi Smith (RIP).

If this scenario happens in Miss Universe in the near future, I'll be very happy. (Well, despite the concerns from fans about the new owner, Anne JKN, they're worried about her rigging it or bribing the judges, and I don't see her like that. Why would she do it to the most prestigious pageant as she is aware of these issues?)
Venezuela has had their back-to-back victory, well I have a feeling that this might happen to that country. Or maybe the USA, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, or South Africa (they almost had it with Tamaryn Green placing 1st Runner-Up in the 2018 edition, their three-peat victory would've made history).

Would love to talk with you more about pageants - have never really known another Australian pageant fan! LOL. I'm in Melbourne. I too remember setting the video recorder to tape them!! I even used to phone up Channel 9 when they were aired there to ask what date in the year they were going to be shown!! So amazing some of the footage you have. I'd love to see a video about Australia's history in the pageants. I was always so disappointed that they were never really considered "important" here - and as a result I think the organising bodies here struggled, and things always seemed a little disorganised from our end. Certainly from what I remember growing up here, they always seemed to be a little politically incorrect and not taken seriously. Thanks so much for all the effort you have put in here on your channel - well done!

It’s so rare to find other pageant super fans in Australia, so it’s awesome to connect! I’m in Sydney - thankfully the borders have reopened!
I remember when I missed MU 1988 and I got my mum to call Channel 10 to ask if they would re-air it. They were kind enough to write me back to explain why they couldn’t - thank heavens for RUclips!
I should consult you to do some research on Miss Universe Australia - admittedly pre-Jen Hawkins I’d lost interest in the local pageant system, so I’ll need to brush up on MUA’s history. Being in Melbourne, have you been to a MUA Final? Thanks for the kind words! Hopefully we can meet up some day! Roger (aka TPN)

I think the Australian super fan is a rare breed, but I always figured there must be others. We are not alone!
Thankyou so much again for your videos. I’ve watched a lot of pageant videos, and yours really are a cut above the rest!
Yes thankfully the borders have opened again. I hope you have been ok through the crazy covid time?
I would love to help you out at anytime! I had done a bit of research over the years on the pageant here. I was even in touch with the woman who was the director for it here for a while. She used to be the organiser for a few pageants here. I even got to be a judge once at a local heat for the national competition for the Miss Hawaiian Tropic Australia pageant. It sounds a bit more exciting than it was. The heat was held in a night club here in Melbourne! Alas I’ve yet to make it to the final of Miss Universe Australia here in Melbourne. It’s on my bucket list. You should come down for it!
I have nearly watched all your videos now. Not sure what I’ll do when you have finished - but thankfully you are still making them!
Would love to chat sometime. My email is: jameswalker68@hotmail.com

I think some were very similar dresses, e.g. Michelle Royer in 1987 wore the same design but in different colours. But you’re right, Courtney Gibbs and Gretchen Polhemus had very similar gowns in their national and international competitions.

Christy's gown was reported to cost almost $10,000, ; as they were all but certain that Christy was going to become their first Miss Universe titleholder.

Of the five, Courney Gibbs' win was the most precarious. She didn't win Swimsuit OR Evening Gown (all other four Texas Aces won BOTH), and California gave a better final answer. I wouldn't be surprised if the judges split 6-5 that year in picking the winner.

Richard Guy (GuyRex) said that he was surprised by Courtney's win. He said that he was shocked because the voting was so split in an interview with USA Today after her win. Which also goes to show that they showed the voting afterwards to alleviate any fears of cheating. So it probably was a 6-5 split. based on who made the top 5 that year at Miss Universe, Diana probably would have done better than Courtney.

@@dy1497 Back when, pageants were big business and news USA Today used to provide lots of coverage.
In 1986, when Christy Fichtner was at Miss Universe, they did a feature story on her (front page) about how she was favored to win Miss Universe. They did a cover story on Guy Rex the day of Miss USA 1987 talking about their two contestants (Texas-Michelle Royer and California-Lori Dickerson). After Texas won, they offered lots of coverage. They even travelled to Taiwan in 1988 and wrote a Life cover story on the 1988 Miss Universe Pageant.
After Courtney won, they were interviewed by several news outlets and Guy said that when he saw the voting he was shocked. Miss Universe always let everyone know afterwards where the contestants ranked preliminaries and final voting. (Not sure about now).
But Courtney was not the overwhelming unanimous choice. She won but barely. As Guy said," the voting was so split". Courtney just won. Unlike the previous three before and Gretchen a year later.
Looking back however, Diana Magana probably would have done better at Miss Universe than Courtney. The judges that year favored dark haired girls (4 Asians and a Mexican). Diana fit that mold unlike Courtney. Even though, Courtney was not my choice for Miss USA ( I wanted Georgia); I was pulling for her at Miss Universe.
Rex Holt passed away in 2015 and Richard Guy passed away in 2019.
