  • Pia. Ariadna. Oxana. Stefanía. Steve. Osmel. Donald. Names that in the pageant world have generated their fair share of headlines and controversy.
Controversy is a very subjective thing. What is uneventful to one person can be a disaster for someone else, depending on each person’s viewpoint. The beauty pageant community is not short of varied viewpoints, and as such, it’s fair share of controversy. A pageant result can cause jubilant celebrations in one country and complete uproar in another.
The way in which a queen wins, doesn’t win, or wins then loses, can be a controversy in itself. A handful of victories in the past 20-odd years have made such headlines.
Let’s cut to the chase and check out my Top 5 most controversial victories at Miss Universe of the new millennium.
Thank you to my awesome subscriber, Richard Marker, for the video topic suggestion!

I am Latin (from Nicaragua) and although I was cheering for miss Colombia, I was SHOCKED when Steve Harvey called Colombia as the winner! I feel Colombia -Philippines were neck to neck the whole night, but Pia gave a much stronger Final answer... And in my opinion, Deserved to be the new miss Universe! I felt bad for both... The dissapointment for Colombia, and a bitter sweet crowning for Pia! In the end, Philippines won fair and square!

I agree with all of your controversies. The one I'd like to highlight is the 2012 controversy. As an American I was cheering Culpo on BUT when Miss Phillipines gave that fantastic response and Culpo gave that pathetic response and ended up winning I was floored! Janine Tugonon should've won! Her answer was pitch perfect and full of sincerity. I haven't been a Culpo fan since that ridiculous win she stole from Miss Phillipines. It's ironic that Culpo came back to host the MU in 2022 and ended up helping crown an American as the new Miss Universe that year, who just so happened to be of Filipino descent (funny how that works).

Thanks for your comments - really appreciate you taking the time to leave them here. 2012 was indeed a WTF year, and really highlighted to me that sometimes finals night performance doesn’t matter as much as your potential to be a good MU. That’s not to say Janine wouldn’t have been incredible as MU, rather it was written in the stars for Olivia to wear the crown that year. It actually had never occurred to me that Olivia was there last year to see a Filipino-American win the title given her PHI connection from 2012!

For me I think if there's oilivia culpo there would be a controversy that's going to happen , first in 2020 almost all Latina finalist with almost all Latina judges . People expecting Ms Peru as the winner but it turned out she's only 2nd runner up , with the way Olivia reading the cards then in 2022 even from the start , miss USA has been in controversy then as oilivia became the host , added the fuel , and again in 2023 there's again that controversy , the earlier post of miss universe - El Salvador and then the omission of miss Philippines up to the announcement of the top5 Olivia's gesture and way of announcement , made it more so suspicious , making it more controversial which again the Philippines was the victim .

When Zuleyka walked in her gown everyone knew she was the winner, Paulina was clearly the winner and when Zozibini spoke we knew she would win so being in person you see which girls gain momentum and how crazy fans can change the narrative as was the case in 2012, 2022, both US wins over super fan countries who never want to admit defeat. In 2015 it wasn’t only the confusion, there was an accident outside the hotel (Vegas strip) and they closed the put the theatre i n lock down, so it allowed for everyone there Latinos vs Asians to fester, it was sadly wild. Even when they opened the doors, people didn’t leave and couldnt as the strip remained closed for hours because of the accident…a wild, wild night. The drama that Steve Harvey's mistake created in 2015, is unrivaled in any pageant event. I don't know if there will ever be another one with such magnitude, considering that PH & Colombia are both pageant-crazy nations. If it happened to nations that were not as pageant crazy, it would have not made such an impact. Nevertheless, it made Pia and Ariadna, the most unforgettable winner & runner-up ever. And Steve, well he got to keep his job for 5 more years & it added to his popularity & paycheck, in a way, Ms.Universe's popularity grew stronger, after a declining audience base, for years. It's a win-win situation for all players after all, whether it's intentional or just an honest mistake on Harvey's part.

Unrivaled is the level of class and grace that Pia was able to manage after her controversial win and throughout her reign knowing the level of hate that was thrown her way (yes Harnaaz got it bad too, but Pia had literal effigies of her being burned by some Latin fans on top of the bodyshaming and false accusations). She never spoke ill of Ariadna despite what any shade the latter may have thrown later on and the bashing she still receives to this day from those who still don't accept the results of that night.

Leila Lopez was called ugly and and a black monkey and Zozi who was the darkest and didn't even have hair was ruthlessly dragged while being called ugly and a monkey and all that. It was this year where she broke into tears and expressed her pain because she thought she was imagining it. That's why it took her so long to come back to the pageant world

2012 was a disaster. Venezuela gave a terrible answer, yet didn't end up as #5. Brazil, who was consistent the whole night and had the best dress, did instead. As for Olivia's victory, the dress was ugly and her answer was weak. As it always happens, the sash helped push her into the finals and, in this case, gave her the (undeserved) crown.

It's possible his new excuse about being told to read the prompter and not the card could be true. After he made the announcement he kept reading the card to himself. He eventually decided he needed to discuss it with the officials. I think he was right to correct the error that night. The winner sgiykd be able to celebrate on the correct night.

The most heart aching situation happened to beautiful Oxana. So far , Oxana Fedarova was the most beautiful Miss Universe in my opinion, and she was treated with such disrespect and humiliation. Miss Universe organisation should be feeling shamed for what they have done.
She was stunningly beautiful on stage and showed her class and intelligent in all respect ( even after dethroned) If this contest is for the world without discrimination she should deserve a pig apology from Miss Universe organisation; at least for sending her to a lunatic man's interview. It was a most disrespectful situation for a female and she may have seen her year in America was not going to be easy.
I always wonder how much we know what happened behind the seen, especially a narcissistic person like Mr Trump involved behind the scenes. I do not think she deserve what happen to her. World will remember her dethroning as one of the darkest patch of this organisation.

For me the Q & A is the crucial and most interesting portion of the pageant. Most of the time the questions given is serious and sometimes humorous. There are times the judges gave serious question and the contestant answered in humorous way just like Dayana Mendoza did. Obviously every ladies didn't expect such kind of question would be given but Brooke Lee's made the audience laughing. That happened many decades before that, in 1969 Gloria Diaz's answer messes up with the minds of the judges and audience as well with what she said, "The same thing I do.................. he wants to change I guess." Would be nice if you make a commentary about the Q & A portion of Miss Universe.
