  • As a fan of pageants since the early 1980s, I’ve witnessed the crowning of 40 women as Miss Universe. To get into the countdown spirit, I’ve put together my Top 10 favourite winning performances since the first Miss Universe I watched, in 1983.
These are the most memorable finals night efforts from start to finish with demonstrations of grace, elegance, humour, wit, spontaneity, sincerity, intelligence and inspirational words. Not just a single mic drop moment or a jaw-dropping evening gown - these are the best all-round performances that I still love to rewatch from time to time.
Picking just 10 women from the past 40 years was no easy feat, and my list will no doubt differ from yours. Please let me know who your favourites have been, but please keep your comments respectful.

Point being that Shawn lead convincingly from start to finish to win Miss Universe 1980. Aww as we say in the Philippines, Catriona's performance had no "gulat factor" aka "shock factor". Everyone expected her to do well and she delivered! So I kinda agree with her placement in the ranking of this video. In contrast, Pia's performance was low key I was beginning to worry about her chances especially during the pre-pageant activities when there was almost no updates about her. But my fears were all evaporated the moment she introduced herself in the prelims with such confidence and it all went uphill from there. I must admit I wasn't a fan of hers (I was rooting for Janicel to win BBP Universe) but Pia proved me wrong. She had won me over! And that's why until today she's my all-time favorite Miss Universe.
*Edit: Looking back, the iconic lava gown could have been Cat's big "shock factor" moment but I feel like they ruined the surprise by allowing Ashley Graham to interview her backstage, mere moments before the evening gown competiton. Such a missed opportunity there!

And it's not becaise of how long ago she won - Lara from India won 5 years before her and she is still more memorable. Heck, there are even videos of Cat and Harnaaz together and the people were screaming Cat's name - and mind you, those were taken in Vietnam and Thailand, not the Philippines. So while Natalie may be considered classically more attractive, it's more of the actual PERFORMANCE throughout the competition and even during the final night that really matters and leaves a mark. Catriona all the way. The lady took on the competition like the most determined straight-A student and studied every aspect of it. The level of meticulous detail and hands-on involvement she had in her journey from going against tradition and handpicking every member of her team, curating her wardrobe, conceptualizing her photo and video shoots, designing her national constume, iconic gown and earcuff, as well as developing her walk, slow-mo turn, and end-of-runway pivot - her holistic approach is just unmatched. Everything was intentional and almost nothing was left to chance. In less capable hands, her approach would have come across as too calculated, but Catriona pulled it off thanks to her charm, confidence, and wit.
She was always predicted to win even before she won her national competition, but once she stepped in Thailand, every other contestant was competing for runner-up positions.

I’m an American, and my all-time favorite Miss Universe is Barbara Palacios. Ironically, my all-time favorite Miss USA is Christy Fichtner. I fell in love with Christy the night she won Miss USA. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. I was 10-years-old the night of the 1986 Miss Universe Pageant. When Miss USA lost, I was devastated. I cried myself to sleep that night. I couldn’t understand how Miss Venezuela had won. However, having re-watched that pageant probably hundreds of times over the years, I was eventually able to see it objectively without the inherent bias for my home country. Then I fell in love with Barbara. She’s exquisite and exudes sophistication and class. Her skin is porcelain, and her eyes are oceans. She’s the top queen in my book.

I also agree with Alicia Machado on the top of this list, she's generally considered one of the best finals night performance of all time.
But I think he missed Oxana. She's effortlessly beautiful that the judges were stunned by her beauty, that it seems she's the sure winner regardless of her final answer. Remember that swimwear of Oxana, goddess! The only reason why he removed her in this list is perhaps she was dethroned and doesn't qualify as a former miss universe, but he's referring to finals night performance in this video so even if she's dethroned she is still a former winner.
And about Catriona Gray. A lot of pageant followers often touted Cat as the gold standard or benchmark of a true Miss universe. One of the best, if not the best miss universe. That she raised the bar so high in miss universe. Fair and square shes easily one of the best of all time.
also has to reconsider Amelia Vega, Jennifer Hawkins, zuleyka rivera, ximena navarrete and Paulina Vega. These women are the standard of a true Miss universe.

I have watched quite a few of the Miss Universe pageants and there is one particular moment among all those pageants that has stuck in my mind and which has left a very positive impression on me. It was during the 1976 pageant held in Hong Kong and it was during the final question segment where there were only five finalists left. One of the five finalists was Miss Israel, Rina Messinger, and the answer which she gave really surprised and impressed me. When asked by Bob Barker which country among all the countries represented at the pageant she would like to visit if she had the opportunity, she said that if she could choose any country she would choose an ARAB one which she would be very glad to see. Given that this pageant was taking place shortly after the hijacking of an Air France airliner en route from Tel Aviv to Paris by a group of Palestinian freedom fighters and their German friends involving a large number of Israeli hostages, her answer showed a very compassionate and loving person who probably would have liked to see peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Although I am sure that anti-Arab sentiment was at an all-time high in Israel at the time, her answer was quite remarkable and I am sure it had a lot to do with her winning the title of Miss Universe that evening. I guess one can never go wrong with a positive attitude, optimism, and forgiveness!

Alicia Machado's performance is the best there is, bar none. It would've been a crime not to crown her that night. Every time she appears on stage, she's winning. She annihilated the other 9 girls by simply being there.

I've always loved Barbara Palacios Teyde for some reason, I think her speaking voice and not to mention she's extremely stunning, especially in the decade that followed her victory. Alicia was a turn away from the Miss Venezuela mould that had developed after Carolina Izsak, which was "6 feet, slender and a bit cold." and I think it was Jacqueline Aguilera who fit that mould more so than Alicia did, but they took a chance on a shorter, spunkier gal and it paid off, paving the way for the likes of sweeter, more down to earth queens from Venezuela like Carolina Indriago, Verushka Ramirez and even Claudia Moreno(even though she didn't actually win Miss Venezuela) all of whom are notably warmer and a bit sweeter than the early to mid 90s Miss Venezuelas.

Many pageant vloggers usually just talk about recent history. So thank you! And I agree, Alicia Machado was one of my favorite winners with one of the best evening gown productions at Miss Universe that year, it's just sad she went through bullying about her weight during her reign, and how she ended up turning to the adult entertainment industry several years later.

We definitely have similar views and the two minor changes in mine would be I would have MU1997 Brooke Lee in the top 10 (I have played her final 3 response to people to show how much she did not like MU1996 Alicia being "fat shamed" both at MUSA & MU and her answer was the ultimate 'mic drop'), replacing R'Bonney (HM in my view) and a switch of the top 2.
Though being held in Cyprus, MU2000 was very much being protested and the moment when Lara asked for the mic & Sinbad gave her the mic, that answer is by FAR, the BEST answer ever given.

If we mean by favorite are consistency, holistic and iconic, missing on this list:
Oxana Fedorova - The OG unbothered queen - she came off unrehearsed, not trying too hard and just captivated everyone that night and that final answer was navigated so so well. That question was so tricky.
Brook Lee (should be top 10) - I remember watching as a 12 year old, accustomed with the "Venezuela Template," I couldn't fathom why someone with her kind of look, demeanor and gown won. Years later I now totally understand. You just know she had a gameplan. Catriona reminds me of Brook's old soul instinct and intelligence (without the cold and calculating approach that is totally just very Cat.)
Riyo Mori. The gown -what??? (commercial couture yet very Japanese) gown performance, swimsuit performance, the strategic pauses for the interpreter, and the depth of her answer, still blow me away. There is a Riyo Mori template that's not being noticed nor studied close enough.
Interestingly, all 3 stood out for me for the risk-taking gowns.
PS: Alicia did well but for me she came/comes off as a cute princess than a queen.
Nonetheless, superb deepdive, TPN! Another job well done! ⭐️ Thank you for the great content and for overall elevating pageant discourse.

    2) Miss Venezuela Mariángel Ruiz 2003 - Everything technical went wrong for this stunning beauty during the finals - everything . Yet she was composed, quick thinking and rolled with the punches as a series of bumbling and unforgivable production glitches were thrown at her. Catriona Gray is the most predictable to win even from her first arrival in Bangkok airport people were so engaged already to her. No surprise she's on your last in your list because she's the most prepared and confident to win which everyone knew she will win, no drama,no hesitations.

Yeah. She's undoubtedly the winner for everyone unless you are a delusional Venezuelan.

We have the same number 1, Alicia Machado in 1996. I was a high school freshman when she was crowned and now that I'm 40, her performance is still the most memorable for me.
