Later, in a private room at the Garrison pub, as Tommy meets with his constituents to hear their grievances, a mysterious stranger with a message arrives. @@aureliaansah1462 wdym tragic? like bad acting
Francis I mean remember season 1 when he almost killed himself, that’s pretty tragic, wouldn’t say bad acting either. This show doesn’t really have many acting problems tbh
I like how Tommy knows it's a little silly, but he treats the lady with absolute respect and takes the matter very seriously anyways. The definition of professional.
it's not silly. clearly, the husband is a drunkard abuser. he needs to be taught a lesson
Literally how professional I want to be in retail
I think Tommy cares that she's living terribly and the fact the only good thing in her life was snuffed out makes him feel bad because for all the evil the Shelby's have done they care about the innocent and needy
I feel for the lady also. She said “their singing was the only pretty thing in my life”. Seriously though….that was the only thing she had to look forward to every day. Maybe the only reason she got out of bed….and he took it from her. Yeah…I feel for her. And her birds.
@@SleepIntoTheDiamondLife You don't think treating this as kids being strangled when they're birds is silly? No-one said what he did is alright.

Who knew a show so serious and bleak could come up with a hilarious scene like this?
I find alot of things they do are funny
who knew that we live to see the day that the Peaky Blinders will have a cold open
There are way too many funny scenes in the show but as we call the British dry humour, very few actually realise it ...

“ I don’t care my husband beats me” this shows how important those birds were to her. Amazing writing
Tommy picked up on that.
yes and it shows another dimension of tragedy behind this funny little scene. violence in a relationship being so common that she simply accepts it as given.

you literally get 5 seconds of humor in Peaky Blinders. As soon as it's revealed that they were birds, she says "Their singing was the only pretty thing in my life. I don't care if my husband hits me." which is really, REALLY dark
There were other segments of humor, tho, it wasn’t just one.
But THIS, you can say, was Quintessential Blinder Humour that puts light on how jokes are meant to be in this realm.

I agree. It's quite ironic for Cillian to play a character who is the complete opposite to him.

"that'll make him pause, even when hes drunk"
tommy just nods his head "yea that'll do it"
love this line.
This really is one of the best scenes in the entire show. It's right up there with Vito helping the lady keep her dog and apartment in the Godfather. It adds texture to the story and illustrates the character's sense of justice.
Gotta love how fast Arthur goes from "Ready To Disembowel" to "Trying My Best to Keep Right"
but Tommy the boss, and an animal lover, keeps it together! That's why Tommy's the boss!
And then back to "ready to disembovel" again when the domestic abuse was mentioned.
Arthur’s severe discomfort is one the funniest pieces of subversive comedy I’ve ever witnessed. His facial expressions are so incredibly animated. You can see exactly what the man is thinking. God I love this show.
arthur was tryna keep his cool but went thru the entire list of emotions and body expressions without saying a word the acting on this show is unmatched on tv rn
ok I might completely overanalyze this or interpret way too much in this but there was something very profound about this scene.
First of all the suspense that gets created is unreal and had me thinking there finna be 3 dead babyheads on the table so when there were only birds I also, like most of you, felt relief. As Arthur did as well. But something got me hooked about the reaction of Tommy something made me appreciate him more.
I think what it is is the utter empathy Tommy has with this woman, that he completely understands that something quite as trivial as 3 pet birds dying is something to take serious. It broke that woman to the point where she felt the need to tell it to the most feared and respected family in the whole city. That got confirmed by her saying "I don't care if my husband beats me", implying that the life of the birds were more precious to her than her own well being. Tommys understanding in my opinion is what makes him the leader and the legitimate Boss of the family. Behind the cold-blooded and reckless facade of him is a man that has a deep understanding of human behaviour and empathy for his peers and people under his wing. That although he is ruthless and quite psychopathic from time to time he is a man that takes care of his people and a man with deep loyalty and values.
Same as Vito Corleone, doing "small" favors like a a green card or a beating. He understood that those things mattered, unlike Michael who just wanted to make everyone bend the knee and kill the ones who refused.
Agree, there is still some of the old Tommy in there, before the ww1, but who is gonna win the fight? The old Tommy or the Cold blooded psycho?
Davi Mourão true but he also understands connections with animals, like with his horse so he prolly relates to her
You are not over analysing my friends. Tommy loves animals
Fun fact: all of this actually went through our heads when we watched that scene
I love how much effort Arthur put into not outright laughing in her face and props for Tommy for taking her seriously.
Everyone’s talking about Tommy keeping a straight face, but imagine how difficult it must have been for the actress playing Mrs Connors to hold back her laughter
I do not think so. Unfortunately mrs Connors exist, a lot of them exist, abused people who cling to whatever little joy that gets them through the life.
And not all of them have a MP/friendly neightbourhood gangster to help.
There’s a lot of clinical psychology right here: Thomas Shelby is cold as an iceberg, his Epoche is stronger than anything else
No judgement, no bullshit, just listens
That’s badass
This woman's performance was a masterclass in acting.
One of the greatest TV shows ever. And we miss Johnny so much

The way Arthur drops the paper at 0:45 is priceless, and his facial expressions lmfao he's like 'you.....he......WHAT!?'
Love how they stood up at the end, because a lady was leaving the room. A touch of class, at one time pervasive even in the shadier quarters of society.
Even if I watch it 10x 100x 1000x I will never ever not cry of laughter to Arthur's reactions, just epic.
"Same colour and you know ....//wavey hands//" 😂😂😂
Tommy cares for animals. His empathy for them is beautiful.
I could rewatch Arthur's reaction at 0:42 for ever and still laugh
The moment she get's Arthur's attention cracks me up every time.
Pure gold😂
Such good writing. I like the scene for a few reasons. The humor of course, the acting, the text and the subtext. The woman isn't there just because of the birds... the birds are the evidence of the level of abuse she is enduring at home. (By a husband who may be a war veteran with PTSD like Tommy) If he killed these birds, he may kill me. She knows who the Shelby's are. She's come for their protection. Tommy responds perfectly.
That is so true. Although, not all PTSD means one's loved one will kill them. It comes out in all manner of ways towards different people and situations. But you have a point. Aggression because of PTSD post combat in those days as today, can be towards your own family.

Tommy fookin' Shelby reminds me of Vito Corleone from the Godfather films. A guy who's a gangster but helping the common folk despite his reputation. On a side note, I laughed my ass off when she showed him the dead birds. XD

When the chinese girl hit the bullet to finn on the phone also arthur got shock but tom he dont move his head inch or eyes even blink either..
"the new ones, I'll call Thomas, Arthur and Fin" 🤣🤣
The actress is brilliant too!
For me, this scene is integral in further highlighting the differences between Tommy and Arthur. Arthur finds the situation humorous, but Tommy, now an elected representative of the people, understands the importance of empathising with the people within his constituency. He's playing Chess, while everyone else is playing Checkers.
It might have humour but it's a deep scene... "I don't care that my husband beats me, but not this!" So when the Blinders pay him a visit, it *will* be for a reason and he *won't* harm her or the new birds... Guarantee it 👍🏻
I love the look of tension on their faces, then she shows them the birds and it’s like a sigh of relief 😂
This dude is cold. Didn’t even crack a smile when she showed the birds.
Tommy has a deep connection with horses after-all, and can probably sympathize when the woman said those birds singing was the one pretty thing in her life
Arthur's facial reactions throughout the entire scene is absolutely insane
This is one of the funniest interactions with Arthur EVER lolol when he drops the newspaper and has that look 😂🤣🤣😭
This scene is one of many signs that Season 5 took a giant leap from Seasons 2-4. Beyond the ruthless and calculating gangster, Tommy shows a new, caring side. Yes, being an MP is a business and power strategy, but he clearly takes his job seriously and is taking the time to listen to the concerns of his constituents. I did not see this character development coming in Seasons 2-4.
I have no idea how he kept a straight face and Arthur's reaction was priceless...
Madam, they aren't dead. They're just stunned. They're pining for the Fjords.
Damn, you can see Arthur ready to go "Old Testament" at a moment's notice
When Arthur heard „strangled all three of them“ his look said „why are we still sitting here? Some dude has to leave the planet“
„Same colors….you know…feathers“ 😂😂😂
Arthur's reaction is the best
I didn't laugh when the woman showed the dead birds. I laughed on Arthur's reaction 😂
"Well, that could have been Darker" is not something i expect to say about a show like Peaky Blinders.
This scene is a lot deeper than first seems. It appears funny but, to the woman trapped in a soulless existence that was the only bit of joy in her miserable life. And that was women's life then. You married and that was it. No way out until one of you died. Tommy understands this. And that is why, the people look up to him. Not totally through fear but because when you need him, he has your back. That breeds loyalty. It also shows how deep the character of Tommy is. He understood what it was to lose something, no matter how meaningless to others.
Tommy can relate, because he loves horses like she loved those birds
I would have loved to see John's reactions in this scene. Him and Arthur together here would've been hilarious 😔
