Working on the 1up mod for the 4 solenoids as we speak. Just finished addition the diodes. I am wondering if there are specific terminals to hook specific solenoids up to (in a certain order) I am thinking ahead and maybe the coding expects the left flipper to be solenoid 1, and so on... but not sure how this matches up with the software since I am not there until later today.
Really slick work here. I like how you used the common-rail approach to wire up all the power. It's just like I see in the bottom of my actual Gottlieb System 80 machine. The electrical tape made me shudder a bit but if it works that's all you need. Are you going to tidy up all the amps hanging off the back and install those inside at some point?
I soldered and crimped my diode connections and then put electrical tape over it all as an overkill precaution. Don’t worry it wasn’t just taped together, and yes I’ll be cleaning up the back end wiring as well. I left it all on the outside so I could easily show the connections in this video
this is the recommended PC specs Zen suggests for FX3. Visual Pinball is much of the same assuming you don't wish to run higher resolution screens such as 4k. OS: Windows 10 Processor: Intel i5-4590 or AMD equivalent Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290X
@@cooltoy Thanks COOLTOY, my intention is to have a dedicated plug and play gaming pc primarily for OTG with Legends Pinball so I don't need more than 1080p. @cooltoy First of all I have to say your work is awesome and has actually been so easy to follow I’m going to try to do the A1U mods you’ve shown. I apologize if I’ve overlooked it here, but can you share any links for the components you used in this mod? Exciters, amps, sound, card, solenoids, etc
Doug I'd love a workshop livestream where you can go into full details for everything step by step. Your project looks amazing so far! Where did you get the Mario Backglass?
Any pointers on get DOF to recognize the SainSmart? I have everything installed (hardware and software) DOFLinx log states that there are no output devices found. Did you run into anything similar? Thanks and keep producing your great content!
Nicely done! Just a slight difference in sound jk. The fact that there is that big of a difference on my phone, I'm sure in person the sound/feel is drastic.
Hello sir, I just subscribed. Could you please let me know how you set up the pinscape board? I just ordered a Star Wars from Walmart on sale and that is the part I’m worried about. It looks like you installed pins
Your mod videos for this machine are awesome. I most definitely want to get one in the future. One question I'd love to know is what your into the machine for with all the mods? Even a ballpark figure would be awesome. I'm in Canada and the pricing would be different but I would be very interested to kmow a general idea as to what it costs to replicate a table like yours . Thank you
Man I wish I was smarter with all this. I’d love to do it. Hoping Arcade1up makes gen 2 of their pinball machines with WiFi access and the ability to just buy all the zen tables.
@@cooltoy so do you just convert the DVI and display port to HDMI? My display on my Star Wars cabinet just when bad and I’ve been wanting to do a mod so I figure why not go for it.
Question for you. I have all the exciters set up for 7.1 via vpx sound options. Not getting any mechanical sounds. Exciters are working because I tested them via Windows 7.1 setup. Do I need to use doflinx with this also to get them to work? Thanks Doug.
Good morning Doug. I have another question about the exciters. What exactly do you call that connecter that is on the end of the speaker wire connecting to the exciter? Looks like some form of wire connector. If you had a link to that piece also. Thanks brother.
They are called Female Crimp Connectors or Female Wire Terminal connectors. You can find a miscellaneous box of them in any hardware store, Walmart, target, etc. I use them when I’m too lazy to solder my connections
@@cooltoy Terse. Concise. I appreciate that. :) But.. could you tell me/us who are new to the digital pinball universe where and how to get these non-Pinball FX tables? Thanks.
Question-how are your running the audio out of the stock speakers in the cabinet? Did you reconnect them with a third amplifier? Leaving them set up as they were, it creates two separate connections on the computer, with the stock speakers running through HDMI audio. How did you resolve that to get all 6 speakers working together?
Doug, quick question. I am not in any way an electrical engineer nor electronics expert. But, wouldn't there be a voltage drop at the end of the line depending on how many devices you are powering with the 12volt supply without using a voltage regulator making some things not work efficiently?
It would depend on the type of devices one chooses to utilize with the set up. The Arcade1Up solenoids and the SainSmart usb relay were designed with 12v power in mind so they won’t have an issue. In theory I could add 4 more 12v solenoids to this set up and shouldn’t have a big drop in voltage since the solenoids all fire independently of one another in quick succession. If they all fired at the same time then yes, I suspect there would be a voltage drop, but without testing it I wouldn’t know how big or small that number would be. I’m not an electrical expert by any means either. I know enough to be dangerous and had to take some circuit analysis courses in college as part of my media degree for some strange reason. Oddly enough that circuit analysis knowledge I learned is what I use more than anything these days with modding lol.
@@cooltoy Doug, thank you so much for your detailed answer. I loved the part where you said you know enough to be dangerous......I had to laugh because that's exactly what I say about myself. Lol. Thanks again for all your work!
Could you please tell me how you got the screen portion to "lift up" ? I removed my plexi, metal rails etc but I just cant lift it up to get to the under screen area? Do i need to remove something else or hold a lever? ( i have the marvel)
Hi Doug, Would you be comfortable sharing your DOF /config folder? No matter what I do, I can't get VPX to fire off the solenoids. Works in FX3. I even made sure the plugin was activated with b2s server and did the whole dof config tool thing. Nadda. Thx
Man when I get enough money to do all these mods with a pc. One day. For the time being, would I be able to at least connect 4 exciters with 2 amps while using the original a1up pcb? I bought 4 of them for my AFM hoping they give off a decent effect even though there wont be surround sound settings from a pc. Thinking I'd also connect a small subwoofer to the stock speakers too. Besides the exciters amps and splitters etc is there anything else you think i would need to get this to work nicely with the a1up pcb audio input? Thank you!
For anyone wondering the same thing, I had to move the control board off the cabinet floor and onto to a 1.5 inch foam cushion. Now it all works normally without lowering the g-meter sensitivity.
I followed this video and have everything hooked up but can’t seem to get DOFLynx to work with the relay. Any chance you’re going to make a more in-depth tutorial about how you got it going?
Thanks for the reply. I have tried to watch that video but it is very long winded. I like your straight to the point approach. I don’t know how but after I posted, I went upstairs and DOFLynx suddenly worked.
Looks Great CoolToy. I wouldnt be able to do that. you must be playing the Visual Pinball X tables. I would like to get a AtGames or Arcade1Up machine. but will wait it out to see if both companies come out with some upgrades. they can do alot better with their machine. I would like to see a bigger dmd screen like some of the new stern pinballs. it's a 15.6" screen. and bigger playfield screen.. they should come out with differnt models with differnt price points. I would spend more for one
Doug I was wondering how many exciters you added? And where you placed them. Also are you using only the stock speakers that came with the cab besides the exciters? Thanks in advance.
added 4 exciters, where I installed them is shown in this video. 2 up front, 2 in the back, Using the stock speakers that came installed in the back box.
Hey Doug, Any tips on getting the sainsmart working with VPX? Every time I try to load up TNG, the DOF plugin gives me an error about trying to initialize LEDs. My setup is basically the same as yours, so not sure why it's throwing up that error. Appreciate if you have any thoughts. thx
check your DOF config file, if you find anything in it that refers to the LEDs you can either remove that text or put a # at the beginning of the text and it will turn off that command.
Are you running your tables at 4k? Looks like you are. I'm having a heck of a time getting pinup popper to play vpx games at 4k. They play 4k if I play through vpx directly. Play on popper they go back down to 4k. FX3 plays at 4k for me through popper. When you set up baller installer, did you choose 1080 playfield or 4k? I wonder if this is my problem. I just dont want to lose all the work I did on it, so afraid to go back to baller installer. Anyway, thanks for your vids. My 1up is looking pretty badace right now.
@@cooltoy Actually you can take advantage of 4k, if your GPU can handle it, by using DSR 4.00x Resolution in nvidia control panel. AMD might have a similar setting. Then go to your emulators and change screen resolution to 4k. Problem is popper doesnt launch vpx in 4k but I can launch it in 4k in vpx. FX3 does fine. I figured out a workaround in the popper launch scripts but it doesn't load the vpx games seamlessly, does some weird graphical buggy stuff until completely launched. I might try going back and reinstalling popper using the 4k playfield settings but if I remember correctly it made the playfield too big. So not sure now lol Anyway, thats why I asked.
@@cooltoy I figured out how to get vpx in popper to run 4k on the 1up without the force windo thing. If your GPU can handle 4k. I can help you out. The tables look so real in 4k absolutely no pixelization on the wireframes and flippers. looks surreal.
Can this kind of setup work with Pinball FX3 and/or Pinball Arcade... from Steam? Dumb question, but what is purpose of the solenoids? are those like the exciters in an AtGames pinball machine?
Exciters and solenoids are two completely different forms of haptic feedback. I’ve showed several times in videos you’ve already commented on that I’m running FX3 via steam on this machine, so yes, it’s doable.
@@cooltoy so is it doable with Pinball Arcade also? Can you give a basic definition of what the exciter does, and what the solenoids do....in a pinball game? I did see this mjrnet.org/pinscape/BuildGuideV2/BuildGuide.php?sid=contactors ... "reproducing that tactile solenoid effect in a virtual cab " The most effective way to reproduce the sensory effects of a pinball solenoid is to use some of kind of solenoid. In a real pinball machine, they have to use a specific mechanism for each job, because each mechanism has to do the actual work of propelling the ball (or whatever it's meant to do). In a virtual cab, we don't have that constraint. Our devices don't have to actually do anything physical in the game; they just have to produce the right sensory impression
Wow, I like how far you've taken this project. Question: Are you using two Arcade1UP power supplies to power all the accessories? I'm a bit nervous about drilling the additional holes for the nudge buttons, but I will do it. On a slightly bummer note, the backglass monitor was shipped and supposed to arrive this week, but I got a notice from Amazon that it was lost and couldn't get a hold of the seller to see if I can order another one. I'll have to do some research hopefully I can find a monitor that fits.
Yes, I’m using the stock power supply with a splitter to power the scoring LCD and my playfield monitor. Then I’m using a spare 12volt power supply I had lying around (basically the same thing Arcade1Up uses) to power the usb relay/power bricks for my solenoid connections. Sorry to hear about Amazon losing your package. It’s happened to me on more than one occasion before
@@cooltoy 4th attempt I finally got my monitor and I'm at the stage of doing the solenoid mod. I've got the plunger recognized in Windows but its not functioning in game yet. I'm also using the PinUp Baller installet front end.
@@cooltoy sweet! Do a direct comparison to the Atgames Pinball and if you can did you pod that for a bigger back glass? Thanks bro hope the family is doing well
I’m using the stock speakers. I have them connected to that usb sound card I showed. I just used a 3.5mm extension cable to make the stock speaker cable reach down to my usb sound card
This is the stock monitor running 1080p. The only thing preventing the stock arcade1up games from running at 1080p was their pcb being hard coded to only output 720p.
I just finished adding the solenoids with your help, the diagram was great with the links! Working on the Doflinx config tonight. I've added extra buttons and will be upgrading the play field to 32" and will end with Baller Installer. Thanks for all the help!!
Awesome! But there is no such thing as a Ground or Positive wire... The ports decide which is what, color coding is just for at a glance notification and for ease of installation in maintaining continum.
Correct, I’m just simplifying the concept for the audience who may not already know these things. I try to speak in concepts as to make the principles of why we do things easier to understand and easier to translate to other types of projects without being insulting to someone’s intelligence.
@@cooltoy Ahh ok... But to make myself clear I wasn't in anyway knocking you or your video.. I say that in case I may have caused and sort of negative perception or response from you... I don't understand why you are nodding the A1up because you might as well just built your own. The ALP is where the real modding is at. By the way with FX3 the plunger does work out of the box so don't use joy2key.

Would a base shaker be overkill for this setup? Your cab looks and sounds amazing. Thanks for the video.
Incredible, COOLTOY! Awesome job! Can you go over PC Specs needed to run all these tables in a future video or reply here? Thanks as always!
this is the recommended PC specs Zen suggests for FX3. Visual Pinball is much of the same assuming you don't wish to run higher resolution screens such as 4k.

Processor: Intel i5-4590 or AMD equivalent

@@cooltoy Thanks COOLTOY, my intention is to have a dedicated plug and play gaming pc primarily for OTG with Legends Pinball so I don't need more than 1080p. Just got mine last Tuesday so still haven't even scratched the surface with the built-in Gottlieb and Zaccaria packs to keep me busy for now. Thanks for the reply, I greatly appreciate it!
Again, apologies if I overlooked it.
links to all the components I've used are in the video description box
Thanks. I appreciate the reply.
Doug I'd love a workshop livestream where you can go into full details for everything step by step. Your project looks amazing so far! Where did you get the Mario Backglass?
That's a monitor
Any pointers on get DOF to recognize the SainSmart? I have everything installed (hardware and software) DOFLinx log states that there are no output devices found. Did you run into anything similar? Thanks and keep producing your great content!
Nicely done! Just a slight difference in sound jk. The fact that there is that big of a difference on my phone, I'm sure in person the sound/feel is drastic.
It’s a night and day improvement!
I see you used my selenoid link resolution I posted in your last video ;) That guy is the only one in history to figure it out before you
Hey Bud ,,,Whats the easiest way to install Pinup Popper Baller install im going to the link but having a hell of a time installing it
Hello sir, I just subscribed.
Thank you
Hey doug, do you know when the Mars attacks pinball table will be available?
Man I wish I was smarter with all this. I’d love to do it. Hoping Arcade1up makes gen 2 of their pinball machines with WiFi access and the ability to just buy all the zen tables.
It really baffles me that they didn’t do that out of the gate.
It's because they want to sell more cabinets, that is their business model.
@@adonisminus20 yeah but they aren’t going to make another Star Wars or marvel one so why not load them up.
@@Jpansta You watch, I can see them releasing the super duper limited elite etc. editions with tables they didn't include in these initial versions.
@@Jpansta Remember this is the same company that has released a dozen different Pacman cabs.
Can you recommend a computer to use? Thanks! Love the videos.
This is what I used. PC: amzn.to/38RoEAu

@@cooltoy so do you just convert the DVI and display port to HDMI? My display on my Star Wars cabinet just when bad and I’ve been wanting to do a mod so I figure why not go for it.
I want to learn how you get a lot of pinball tables

@@cooltoy awesome. Thanks Doug
Are all the tables shown in the video from Pinball FX3?
No
@@cooltoy Terse.
How did you resolve that to get all 6 speakers working together?
stock speakers are connected to the USB sound card via an extended 3.5mm audio cable in the 2.1 channel port.
@@cooltoy Thanks!
removed my plexi, metal rails etc but I just cant lift it up to get to
the under screen area? Do i need to remove something else or hold a
lever? ( i have the marvel)
There are 4 screws that hold the mounting bracket down that you need to remove to be able to lift the monitor up
Hi Doug,
Would you be comfortable sharing your DOF /config folder? No matter what I do, I can't get VPX to fire off the solenoids. Works in FX3. I even made sure the plugin was activated with b2s server and did the whole dof config tool thing. Nadda.
Thx
sure thing, send me a DM on facebook or email me so I can send you my folder
Man when I get enough money to do all these mods with a pc. One day. For the time being, would I be able to at least connect 4 exciters with 2 amps while using the original a1up pcb?
I bought 4 of them for my AFM hoping they give off a decent effect even though there wont be surround sound settings from a pc. Thinking I'd also connect a small subwoofer to the stock speakers too. Besides the exciters amps and splitters etc is there anything else you think i would need to get this to work nicely with the a1up pcb audio input? Thank you!
I was able to get DOFLinx working but my two bumper solenoids are setting off my nudge function. Any Ideas?
For anyone wondering the same thing, I had to move the control board off the cabinet floor and onto to a 1.5 inch foam cushion. Now it all works normally without lowering the g-meter sensitivity.
I followed this video and have everything hooked up but can’t seem to get DOFLynx to work with the relay. Any chance you’re going to make a more in-depth tutorial about how you got it going?
did you use the DOF Config tool for creating you file to communicate to the relay? ruclips.net/video/y3DdNzrrmQ8/видео.html
I'm also hoping that either company releases a "pro" version of their machine with more upgrades and features.
@@cooltoy thanks Doug. Have a good weekend brother.
Hey Doug,
Any tips on getting the sainsmart working with VPX?
My 1up is looking pretty badace right now.
nope, just running them at 1080p as that is all that the stock Arcade1Up monitor is capable of.
I did see this
mjrnet.org/pinscape/BuildGuideV2/BuildGuide.php?sid=contactors ... "reproducing that tactile solenoid effect in a virtual cab "
The most effective way to reproduce the sensory effects of a pinball solenoid is to use some of kind of solenoid.
Very cool! Looks like fun to try :) Looks like some custom art on the sides of the cabinet - did you get this printed somewhere?
Nope, it’s the stock Arcade1Up art
Yea bro how you hooked back glass up and what you used
I went over that in my Part 2 video already posted on the channel
@@cooltoy sweet! Do a direct comparison to the Atgames Pinball and if you can did you pod that for a bigger back glass? Thanks bro hope the family is doing well
did you/will you explain the software used to make all this work together? If so, I will watch that video too.
Fx3 via steam, and visual pinball x are the two programs that are running, and then I’m using the front end Pinup Popper by Nailbuster
@@cooltoy thxs for info. How does Pinball FX3 know how to use/when to engage the solenoids and fire off the sounds in your surround sound system?
if you are using the arcade1up power supply for this, how do you power the dmd? trying to figure that part out, thanks
using a Y splitter cable
@@cooltoy thank you!
How are the main pinball speakers hooked up? And are the stock?
I’m using the stock speakers. I have them connected to that usb sound card I showed. I just used a 3.5mm extension cable to make the stock speaker cable reach down to my usb sound card
My soldering skills are terrible, would crimps get the job done?
Yes, though not ideal. Crimp or twist on connectors would also work as a substitute
I know you did the 32” then went back to stock size. This is running 1080p isn’t it? Did you swap it with another 24” monitor?
This is the stock monitor running 1080p. The only thing preventing the stock arcade1up games from running at 1080p was their pcb being hard coded to only output 720p.
@@cooltoy I have a lvds to hdmi adaptor board coming today in the mail. That all I need for it?
Can you still play hot seat/multiplayer on FX3 games with Baller Installer?
Baller installer is just a visual front end, all the same features of fx3 are still accessible
@@cooltoy Great to hear, thanks for the tips!!
I just finished adding the solenoids with your help, the diagram was great with the links! Working on the Doflinx config tonight. I've added extra buttons and will be upgrading the play field to 32" and will end with Baller Installer. Thanks for all the help!!
What is the Zedboard for ?
The board he has controls nudge and acts as the button encoder. Check out the part 2 mod video.
@@MrEd20901 thanks ed. Do you have to use a zedboard? it just looked like a really complex encoder. Is it the only type that has nudge?
If you don't care about analog nudging then you can use just about any encoder you wish.

I don't understand why you are nodding the A1up because you might as well just built your own. The ALP is where the real modding is at. By the way with FX3 the plunger does work out of the box so don't use joy2key.
I’ve already explained why I’m doing this in detail in other videos. I also already have shown how to mod the ALP.
