Thanks for this. I was thinking about picking up the Attack From Mars machine but reviews made me sceptical. Now with this mod I believe I'll pull the trigger. Being able to have some of my favorite pinball games and not having to build a cabinet is perfect for me, the novice gamer. I have bought the Sharpin Ultra last year when it came out, for some reason I have very noticeable lag and owner seems not to want to help support US buyers. I see the upgraded 32" monitor and 21" back glass monitor so I will add those projects as well. Thank you again. I'll let you know my progress. I will gift myself Attack From Mars for Father's Day Ordered Attack from mars from Best Buy, should be here 06/17
I am doing the same Tim. I just ordered my AFM, both monitors recommended as well as the $160 board that does the accelerometer and provides the updated plunger. I have a small HP Z2 PC that has an i5 processor, 4 display port output ports using its built in nvidia card, 16 GB of ram. I can't wait for all the parts to arrive.
Very cool introduction for people who are starting on virtual pinball... One note for you, that may help you in the future. Dont put the dmd or backglass on TOP ot the playfield or to the LEFT... you'll have issues with future upgrades in other type of pinballs like visual pinball, future pinball, and if you use pinup player or popper... negative values are ok with pinball fx or even pinball arcade but you'll have problems with the rest.
Yea, I'm fully aware of that. But since the main focus was for just the main playfield and the dmd scoreboard in FX3 only for this video I wanted to make it super simple for people. I'll show the other method of having the monitors arranged side by side in other videos where I have the back glass monitor installed and am also running VPX and Future Pinball.
Have you thought of adding a small subwoofer to the cabinet? I’ve been thinking of getting one of Arcade1Up’s pinball machines and mod it with the backglass as well - along with a subwoofer.
Can you give some insight or guidance on PC set-up? As in; how to power-on the PC, when it's neatly tucked away and out of reach, and how to launch FX3 (auto-launch at PC power-on?). Interested in achieving: Switch-on the machine, PB-FX3 launches straight away and I'm into the application without any mucking-around. A one button/switch activation would be great :)
Sounds like this is going to be a really fun series of videos to watch! I need more space before buying pinball, but I like the idea of using a PC and changing the back area to a monitor to match the game as opposed to buying multiple VP cabs. I never really took a close look at the DMD before, but I dont understand why they can include something like that without issue on the pinball, yet be so hesitant to confirm inclusion on a Dragon's Lair cab. Hopefully they figure that screen solution out soon. I much rather pay extra for a proper second screen and not possibly using my own, versus getting some deluxe edition that includes another stool or something. Lol. Sidenote; I know you originally started looking at these products just because they were more cool toys (pun intended) for the community, and now you've sort of been given this extra pressure to *immediately* inform the Arcade1up community of any red flag or update you come across lol. I guess it comes with the territory. Hopefully you are still having fun with everything. I appreciate the videos and whatever you decide to present to us when you have the chance to do so.
Well, I know that you specifically said that you do not "suggest buying a $600 arcade 1up cabinet for the sole purpose of modding it" so I paied $850 (Canadian) instead. Looking forward to modding!
Great job man! Typical Arcade1up crap though... broken parts within a month - no replacement parts anywhere in sight on the website - user eats the costs and must mod via 3rd party.
Love the video .. I'm looking in to digital right now because the real pinball machines have got insane in price .. so of course after watching all these upgrades I wanna just upgrade right away a new digital one up machine .. is there a better way to go ?? Great video! Thanks so much--i used the teachings herein to repurpose my arcade1up pinball into a dedicated Pc-based pinball fx3 cabinet. Quick question: would it be possible to connect the power for the DMD/speakers/backlight into a USB port in the PC, using some sort of barrel-to-USB adapter, so that the entire shootin' match powers up when I power up the PC? Or is there a way to power everything off of the PC power supply?
Hey Doug, I assume this is unrelated to the mod that lets you play just the 1up Zen tables? Does that still work? If I own the tables via Switch does that count? Or do you have to go through steam. I’m hooked on Vpinball (didn’t think I would since I have a real Bally machine). Thanks for the videos!
Yes this is unrelated to that new mod. This plays the PC versions of these games through steam which are far superior to the android versions in just about every measurable way.
I did this mod yesterday. Your video was really helpful, some of the connections are a bit confusing. The DMD works in Windows, but haven't gotten it to work with the tables yet. I got Pinball FX and FX3. FX3 works really well, but I wanted to play Mandalorian, and that is through FX. I got a bundle of 2 games with FX. The flippers work with one, but not Mandalorian. Definitely still have some more work. I'm conflicted on what to do. Do I take this farther and get the better encoder and upgrade my PC? I would love to upgrade the screen, the stock display is not great. There are so many tutorials out there, the more I look at this stuff, the more I want to do. But...with the stock PCB, everything works. I loaded all 30 tables plus the Zen and Pinball Arcade mod. It's easy. I don't think I will go back to stock, but it's tempting. Just depends how much time, money and effort I want to spend. Edit: I got the flippers in Mandalorian to work. I had already setup Joytokey to work with FX3, and the keys are different in FX. I just went in and set the FX keys to match what I had set for Joytokey. Still don't know why the DMD is displaying my second Windows screen but not the game's DMD. I'll figure it out.
Iam gonna have to mod mine because the pcb board died on me so iam glad i dont have to get rid of it just gotta change some things this is really a shame arcade1up couldnt do this from the gate smh
Cool modding video! I don’t plan to mod my A1UP pinball but this was still a cool watch! The main reason I don’t plan to mod my A1UP pinball is, when I turn on the machine, I want a streamlined experience. I don’t want a window’s desktop UI, then having to launch Pinball FX with a Bluetooth controller, then exit and properly shutdown the PC through windows again, etc... does this mod or your future mod make it so that you never see a Windows interface or is that inevitable for a PC mod? How long was it before your stock haptics and switches gave out? And also, would A1UP have replaced them? I just got my A1UP about a week ago, and I’m loving it just the way it is, but if the haptics or switches crap out, I’d love to be able to fix them. Sorry for all the questions! Great video, very detailed, good visuals to match, and it’s cool seeing how far people push their mods!
I wish someone would just figure out if/how you can just copy games from the other Arcade1Up pinball tables. Like take Marvel tables and add them to the Star Wars one, etc
Awesome. Really appreciate the detailed mod info. Shame about the stock controller board dying so quickly (quality issue or just bad luck?). This looks like a no-brainer upgrade for most people who have a spare PC around to power their steam collection. Cheers!
My Marvel machine was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes. I have no real way of knowing for sure if it was bad luck or a quality issue, since I do not know what may or may not have changed in the manufacturing process when the retail ready units were made.
@@cooltoy No big deal either way. There is an inherent failure rate of all electronics so let's just chalk it up to bad luck. Fortunately, as you proved it's really not that big a deal to upgrade/replace these parts for minimal cost. My guess is that after shipping costs are factored in, that A1up isn't making that much on these units, so it's still a great value overall as a vpin cab that can be modded.
Thanks for the awesome video. I grabbed this converter board for my PC's HDMI to the monitor. Thank you. If I wanted to convert PCB to HDMI (so that I could add an HDMI switch and run either system) what do you recommend to convert PCB into hdmi?
Cool Toy, I have selected the exact Dell optiplex 9020 small form factor PC you have in the video. For the 3 video outputs, do they all need to be HDMI? Or will display port work just as well? Do I need to get a display port to HDMI converter cable?
They don’t all need to be HDMI, you can use display port. You only need a display port to hdmi adapter if one of the screens you are using only accepts hdmi input
What specific graphics card are you using in the optiplex? Can it be any GTX 970? It has to have at least 3 video outputs correct? Thanks for the vid...can't wait for the others.
3 if you want to do the additional back glass screen also, only 2 if you just want the scoring LCD and playfield. I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile 4GB graphics card in this particular PC.
Great video, Cooltoy! I realize your model is preproduction, but that is concerning to have that many parts quit working so soon. I’m looking forward to getting my AFM cab, but am a bit concerned about the parts quality now.
Can you only use the VSDISPLAY just to improve the stock screen quality to 1080p or do you really need a pc also? I am only interested in doing a screen mod to inprove quality & contrast from the stock screen. Please let me know.
I don't believe the monitor has the capability to save any settings, so once you remove the VSDISPLAY adapter you would lose whatever changes you made.
@@cooltoy Tks for responding. Can I just simply add VSDISPLAY HDMI VGA DVI Audio LCD Controller Board without the need a pc? The only mod I am interested is really screen resolution on the stock.
I think the fact that these Arcade 1up components are failing already is a bigger story and needs to be addressed. Have you reached out to them for replacements or information?
Sorry to hear the A1up components died, so soon. Did A1up even offer to replace them? Nice job on repurposing the existing cabinet. A good lesson for those who already spent good money on this cab, and want to continue using it, with way better replacement hardware, without having to buy, and build a new cabinet. Looking forward to the backglass monitor install video. Thanks for sharing this.
I never asked for replacement parts from Arcade1Up since this was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes. I didn’t want to ask for replacement parts because I didn’t want to take away from customers who might need those parts more than me.
Thanks so much for a great and informative video. You mentioned that you don't recommend getting one of these if your intent is just to mod them. Any other kits you'd recommend? I love the Star Wars theme and really would need that smaller scale of cabinet for my room, so modding this cabinet seems like a solid fit for me. I'm much more comfortable on the PC modding side than in building a cabinet from scratch, so some sort of kit appeals.
Question for you Cooltoy - I've got FX3 from Steam and have been purchasing the tables as I work to complete my mod. Are you just running FX3 stand alone or did you use something like Pinup Popper and run FX3 through that. All those Popper settings are a bit overwhelming.
@@cooltoy Thanks. That's what I used following Nailbusters install guide. One of the issues I'm working through right now is when I run just FX3 (outside of popper) I'm not seeing anything on the backglass. The DMD works fine. I also have to figure out how to stop the score from displaying in the upper left hand corner of the playfield.
So with the PC mod you lose the functionality of the stock analog plunger? Also are there two separate display connections for the play field and DMD or do they run off the same lvds connector? Thanks a lot man for you help on this you're a lifesaver.
I didn’t ask for replacement parts because this was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes. I could have easily asked for replacement parts and I’m sure they would have taken care of me. But I didn’t want to take parts away from customers who needed them more than I did, so I never asked.
So I just got the marvel 1up machine. The previous owner modded it so I have all the marvel boards, all the Star Wars boards and Williams boards. If I understand you correctly, I would need a pc and a different pcb in order to utilize the stock playfield at 1080 correct? In other words, what is the bare minimum I would need to get 1080 resolution from the stock board and not lose haptics or accelerometer?
hi. thanks for taking the time to make these mod videos, really enjoying the series. One thing i am unable to find (i may have over looked) is what video card you are using in your PC or are you just using on board graphics from the I5? if so, does it handle all 3 monitors without anything else needed? thanks in advance for any help.
Probably a dumb question, but is there any way to get the stock On/Off switch to turn on/off the PC? I know you can buy buttons with wires that plug into the motherboard, but I'd really like to use the built in toggle switch. Maybe some sort of wire converter or something between the existing wires and the PC plug?
When preparing the stock monitor for the VSDISPLY do you simply remove that existing smaller metal box from the back of the monitor. Any more details around this step would be appreciated. I ordered a mix the parts form this step one video and the the step 2 video for the plunger, accelerometer and button controller. Has anyone documented this process further? Thanks for the great videos!
Yes, I removed the smaller metal box entirely since I am no longer using the stock PCB that that metal box was housing. The only major details you need to focus on is making sure you ground the applicable ground cable and make sure the LCD controller board isn't touching a conductive source of any kind before you power it on.
So strange that those monitor options aren't activated on the stock cabinet. Hopefully that's just because it isn't the production line and its something they offer in the actual product, or have it all turned on by default.
Wow I'm wondering how long before others have the same issues with their cabinets, imagine after all the waiting you play a few weeks and kaput! Just another reason I'm glad I cancelled my pre-order after all the excitement and anticipation!!

I will gift myself Attack From Mars for Father's Day
Ordered Attack from mars from Best Buy, should be here 06/17
You WILL love it, that pinball is FANTASTIC.
Wait when it yells: A T T A C K !!!! at you...
Great show as always!
Thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video
Great work! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
The two dislikes are most likely not Bill Murray fans. Awesome shirt.
Murray is the man!
Wow, can't believe it has that kind of problems already.
Amazing job! 🥃
Incredible job!!
Well, I know that you specifically said that you do not "suggest buying a $600 arcade 1up cabinet for the sole purpose of modding it" so I paied $850 (Canadian) instead. Looking forward to modding!
enjoy your new machine!
Great job man! Typical Arcade1up crap though... broken parts within a month - no replacement parts anywhere in sight on the website - user eats the costs and must mod via 3rd party.
For Max users, I wonder if you can run Parallels and use a Mac mini?!
This is amazing thanks!
Glad you like it!
Damn the unit already fried? Great video. I am going to do this on mine but I have to get a bigger screen.
Love the video .. I'm looking in to digital right now because the real pinball machines have got insane in price .. so of course after watching all these upgrades I wanna just upgrade right away a new digital one up machine .. is there a better way to go ?? THANKS MAN I HIT THE LIKE AND Subscribe BUTTON . .LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE
Great video!
Fancy modding man! Too bad the machine clunked out on ya but looks like something good came out of it.
Like take Marvel tables and add them to the Star Wars one, etc
can't be done.
I think we’re all very concerned about the broken parts. That’s too soon. I’m rethinking the Star Wars cab when it becomes available in 2024.
I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile 4GB graphics card in this particular PC.
i had the dmd and sound go out i did a 22 inch lcd mod for the back glass have my dmd on there for now would be good for art work
Wow at the poor QC on the stock units. A1UP really needs to turn it around quick on these.
EXCELLENT JOB....
Great video, Cooltoy! I realize your model is preproduction, but that is concerning to have that many parts quit working so soon. I’m looking forward to getting my AFM cab, but am a bit concerned about the parts quality now.
AMD Ryzen NUCs are getting crazy powerful with their APU. Should be way more than enough power and super tiny to run all this.
@@cooltoy Ah, ok.
Doug can I ask what type of computer / graphics card you went with? Trying to price out mine to do the same?
Cool build! So what video card are you throwing in that Optiplex 9020? That PSU is fairly limited. I guess you are having to use low rise cards too.
Yes low profile cards for these SFF models. You can use a 1650 or 1050ti card
Oh man. They’re already breaking down. I hope A1Up gets these issues ironed out as I really planned to get one.
Question for you Cooltoy - I've got FX3 from Steam and have been purchasing the tables as I work to complete my mod. Are you just running FX3 stand alone or did you use something like Pinup Popper and run FX3 through that. All those Popper settings are a bit overwhelming.
I'm currently using Popper, I would suggest looking into Pinup Popper Baller Installer. It's the easiest set up they offer.
HI AWESOME AWESOME VIDEO. Just a quick question the three outputs from pc what are they all hdmi?
cheers
damian
They are outputs not inputs, and they don’t have to be hdmi. They can be whatever format your monitors accept as inputs
Wait, this has been in the wild for a handful of days and yours already quit working? Canceling my order is getting more tempting by the day....
this was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes back in December.
So with the PC mod you lose the functionality of the stock analog plunger? Also are there two separate display connections for the play field and DMD or do they run off the same lvds connector? Thanks a lot man for you help on this you're a lifesaver.
Uh oh...problems less than a month ??? I am a little worried about my AFM pre order now. Did A1UP warranty the parts with replacement parts?
I used a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile 4GB
Nope, I have a retail Star Wars pinball cabinet also and none of those settings are available on it either.
Your mod is better quality then the default cabinet internals.
Wow I'm wondering how long before others have the same issues with their cabinets, imagine after all the waiting you play a few weeks and kaput! Just another reason I'm glad I cancelled my pre-order after all the excitement and anticipation!!
