During the early days of the pandemic lockdowns when there were shortages of toilet paper, everyone kept joking that we were going to start using sea shells.
Demolition man had other more prominent parallels.

There were videos and articles during the shortage about what people used to use to wipe their a** before the invention of TP and some of them mentioned rocks and even broken pieces of pottery, that was not much different from shells...

My favorite part of this movie is the little girl to reporter..."F* you lady". Well said kid.
I came here to say the exact same thing. It's the best line in the whole movie, and that's saying a lot bc it's a highly quotable movie. I was bummed that whole scene wasn't in this edit. Super fun 90's movie, happy they watched it, but sadly missing some key scenes. Disappointing edit.

Nah, it was a movie made at precisely the right time; it's simultaneously a perfect example, but also a hilarious deconstruction, of basically how every 80s-90s action-sci-fi movie was made.
So basically what "Last Action Hero" tried to do, only a billion times more subtle.
It gave Emily a "Batman vibes" because Wesley Snipes is playing one hell of a Joker.

So IMO, I think the "three seashells" thing is actually brilliant. It's actually funnier that it's never explained, and that's the joke. I don't think it's lazy writing, I think if they'd tried to explain it, anything they explained would have been just as silly/dumb as Taco Bell and commercials. The mystery of the three seashells will live on forever!
I just never understood why the three seashells wasn't part of behavior modification.

I absolutely agree with the original post here. The point was that it was weird and went unexplained. If it was explained it wouldn't be a joke.
Anyway, my theory is that the shells clean the area using ultrasonic vibrations. There are three shells of different sizes that you choose based purely on the size of your butt.
There are three shells probably each one is for different use; wipe, clean and dry, IMHO.
So you must flush the shells and there's new ones each time for the next occupier, like you can't have the same shells for everyone it wouldn't take long for that first one to fill up lol
A grossly underrated and underappreciated movie. One of my favourites... made me fall in love with Sandra Bullock.
The funny thing about the Taco Bell gag is that this film was made shortly after Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis bought a majority stake in Planet Hollywood. Also, worthy of note, in the UK version of the film it's Pizza Hut instead of Taco Bell.
Same in the German version, nobody knows Taco Bell over here 🙂
I don't think the fact that John is arrested for the deaths of the civilians is bad writing at all. Judging by the fact that he was already referred to as the "Demolition Man", that implies that he has a long history of causing extremes amounts of damage while doing his job, which means he has made enemies in high places doing so. It was only a matter of time before it would catch up to him, so when they had the chance to literally put the Demolition Man "on ice", they took it. They didn't need to look into the hostages actual manner of deaths any longer. Plus they had already had Simon in custody, which means they no longer needed John's services, so they essentially killed 2 birds with one stone.
Hard disagree on the three seashells thing. I think it's perfect that we don't find out and can't figure it out. I find it flavourful that some leaps of invention are unfathomable for someone who has never seen it before.

This is something many modern film makers have just completely forgotten, or stubbornly refuse to acknowledge - some things need be left to the audience's imagination; explaining and/or showing them in exhaustive detail *ruins* them. I'm looking at you, modern Star Wars. At the rate they're going, we'll be getting an entire movie about the Gonk Droids' backstory before the decade is out.

"Murder/Death/Kill" is supposed to be like reading off of a chart. Whatever the computer code is for that offense (presumably a variation of 187 with some extra numbers), the description field in the database has "Murder/Death/Kill", so that's what they say. Image someone who doesn't know about computers reading an error message to tech support.
Presumable it is the code that covers all Murders, Deaths and Kills, and yes "Kills" are different to murders, people can get killed in accidents or many different ways. So the code would be saying it is a possible Murder, Death or Kill.
Also, the computer is called L7 ('square').
Code 187 is the California Penal Code designation for murder, which is defined as, "The unlawful killing of a human being, or fetus with malice aforethought."

I love how Spartan and Pheonix are two sides of a coin in this movie. They are even equally as funny in their reactions to this world.

The Arnie reference actually was due to their rivalry coming to an end. Both actors were successful enough by that point in their career to realize there was room for two action stars. At the height of their 'feud' they would never have even mentioned the other even in an interview. Having an ironic reference to the other in a movie was pretty much a hint that they made peace. Arnie's reference to Sly is in 'The Last Action Hero'.
I believe the first one was in "Twins" where Arnold's character makes fun of a Rambo poster

The one joke that aged well, to be honest, is the sea shells bit. It's such a good skewering of people who expect everyone to know something they may never have been exposed to.

I can’t believe the “no touch” greeting didn’t catch on, in the geek/nerd community, when COVID hit us.
I think there’s one missing element that people don’t mention when talking about how John spartan was framed by Simon Phoenix. At the beginning you hear the chief of police say that he is so tired of the demolition man stuff and you can tell he’s extremely frustrated by John. I think that the reason why it seemed as if they kind of just took Simon’s word for it and glossed over it was because they wanted to. They didn’t like John Spartan because he was going against orders, taking all the credit, and saving all the people single-handedly almost and he probably made other officers or even the chief look less than capable specially because at the time the entire city was literally destroying itself. So I’m sure the chief was more than happy to just not really look to deep into the evidence and just say that John spartan went completely nuts this time and innocent people died because of it so we’re putting them both in prison. That’s just my opinion.
I just noticed that Benjamin Bratt and Sandra Bullock must have worked so well together in this movie that they were both in Miss Congeniality a few years later. So at least one good thing came out of it. Well, that and this movie is probably why Wesley Snipes became Blade.

I have to say I have never heard anybody say they thought Huxley was the Spartan's daughter, and the way it was edited did not support that, methinks Matthew was just trying to validate Emily's take. Seeing Emily's' reaction to many other movies, I expected her to like it, obviously it triggered a nerve. Emily's visceral reaction throughout was pure entertainment though. Demolition Man is a classic and one of my favorite movies.

I'm not even fifteen minutes in and I've lost count already of the number of times I've busted out laughing and most of those were at Matthew''s giggles and smiles and that's more times here today than from of all the other videos of you two I've ever watched. He's rightfully giggling like a schoolgirl at the expected reactions of Emily and I'm having the best time ever laughing along. Great movie, one of my favorites, awesome reactions from the two of you, absolutely made my day. Thank you so much.

They couldn’t modernize fast enough…along with hummer and Saturn (I really miss Saturn, dishwasher safe cars😂😂)

How do you know it's not around in 2032?
When Spartan was first defrosted, he was told his daughter had never had any interest in seeing him. Given that Spartan had been prosecuted and sent to jail leaving her and her mom to fend for themselves (not to mention social condemnation they would have suffered), I would have expected the daughter to have soured on her father and law enforcement in general.
So, no; I would never have thought Bullock's character to be Spartan's daughter.
This was such a weird-ass film; it appeals to my love of absurdity. And the cast was pretty amazing not just for the time, but where the actors' careers went afterwards. Do you recognize the actor who played Chief Earle, who was also the Warden in "Shawshank Redemption"? You mentioned "Judge Dredd", a role Stallone also had; Rob Schneider was Stallone's sidekick in that film, too. And Benjamin Bratt later co-starred with Sandra Bullock in "Miss Congeniality". But I think this film was Bullock's big breakout role.
I do enjoy this film, and I find it is infinitely re-watchable.
In a deleted scene its revealed his daughter was one of the scraps.
Personally, I think Sandra's big breakout role was a year later with Speed.
I think people were smitten with Sandra after Love Potion #9, or at least While You Were Sleeping. I was a child back then, and by Speed, she seemed like a bonafide star to me.

While You Were Sleeping was imo her breakout role. The ads about the movie were everywhere, because they wanted an another "Sleepless in Seattle" type movie to be a worldwide hit.
A couple of Stallone movies I would LOVE to see you react to is "Oscar"....a very underrated comedy.....and then the mess that is known as "Stop or my mom will shoot!"....I would LOVE to see Emily's reaction to that movie....oh and "Rhinestone" starring Stallone and Dolly Parton....love this reaction. Love all of your movie reactions. Keep it up!

Growing up in San Diego, this movie was the crown jewel of movies filmed in our city. The San Diego Convention Center was awesome to see. That's where Comic Con is every year. Then there was that glass pyramid which was a furniture store on Miramar Road. Drove by those places all the time and I'd call out "Demotion Man was filmed right there!"
It seemed like Emily experienced joy-joy feelings from this viewing.

My favorite part of this movie is the clip of the little girl cursing at the news reporter.
The only explanation for the three seashells that would make sense to me, especially in the context of a society this germaphobic, would be that they're three buttons. One to flush, one to wash you, one to dry you.
The Three Seashells are the most memorable part of this film. It has entered culture.
Funny thing about the 3 Sea Shells.
One night one of the Script writters called the Director(or it was the otherway around can't tell) and said "We are like 60 years in the futur, but they still use toilet paper?, don't you think by that time they would have found something else that is less primitive?"
They both agreed, but None of them could come up with something that would replace Toilet paper.
So they talked about it with the rest fo teh team, and one guy just had the idea of the Shelf with the 3 Sea shells, and they called it a day, telling themself that NO ONE WOULD EVER PAY ATTENTION TO IT ANYWAY...
30 years later people are still arguing online about those 3 Sea shells and their use...
I always thought the 3 seashells were like a bidet. 1 shell for women upfront 2 seashell for rear, 3 shell for drying.
Pretty sure they're just buttons for the bidet, but that's my theory.
IIRC, Huxley WAS the daughter in an early draft of the script.
In a deleted scene from the final script, he came across her among the Morlocks in the Underground.

One cool little reference that most people today miss is that Sandra Bullock's character "Huxley" was named after Aldous Huxley, the man that wrote "Brave New World", which was the basis for this shown "future" society. Would have loved to have heard a reference to "Soma" somewhere in the movie.

Emily's description of the seashells is both the best and most horrifying solution I've heard.
This is one of my favorite movies. This brought Old Sly back into the public eye and made Wesley Snipes. Also no lady not THAT kind of whacking lol.

I don’t like this movie, but I do have a funny story about it.
I did a year abroad in Germany back in college, and one of the other guys from my home university decided that he really wanted to watch a classic action movie. So we went to a local electronics store and he found this movie. While watching it, the “Taco Bell” invitation came up, and because Europe doesn’t really have Taco Bell, they dubbed over it with “Pizza Hut.” My friend absolutely flipped out over that, and was flipping out even more when he saw that they digitally replaced the big Taco Bell sign with Pizza Hut.
That was by far my favorite part of the movie, and it wasn’t even a part in the movie. 😁
I remember seeing this in the cinema way back when, here in my home country of Sweden. And the dubbing over was very obvious, but I just couldn't figure out what they were REALLY saying... Took quite a few years before I figured out it was Taco Bell.
I have still, to this day, never been in to a Taco Bell. 🙂
If anybody missed it, this has Jack Black's first onscreen role as an extra. He's in the frame when Stallone takes the shotgun from Friendly's guys in the sewer.

I heard that during the red carpet premiere of Gravity, a reporter actually asked Sandra Bullock how the three seashells worked.
The way I see the 3 seashells is kinda like buttons for toilet functions. One flushes, one activates some kinda washing like a bidet, and one activates something like air drying :P
I always say it: I wanna see the movie about Franchise wars.
It wasn't actual war, just how they were competing. How we call everything a war on something. Although the idea they'd fight in uniforms like armies of super villains has been tossed around in comment before.
In the opening scene, the building demolished was the Belknap building in downtown Louisville, Ky. They filmed the actual event. I used to work next door to this building and made many deliveries there.

For Denis Leary I hope “The Ref” is on your list. It’s a Christmas movie but one of the funniest movies that I watch every December.

I can never guess how she is going to react. I have always taken the three seashells to be buttons shaped like seashells with different cleaning and flushing tasks.
We live in a time when people use unnecessary words or dumb trendy phrases that wouldn't have been used decades ago. We use the word "Google" instead of "search." People say "just saying" for no reason.
A lotta the (beep) "can't say that" going around too, but instead of a fine they lose everything and go hungry.

Loved this movie when I was a kid. Watched it in the theater with my folks. Stallone is doing his thing, Snipes is amazingly awesome, Bullocks first big movie... its just great.
In Europe, we don't have the "Taco Bell" scene, they overdub it and call it Pizza Hut. Didn't even bother to do two takes with different lines, just overdubbed it with the same lip movement.
I have a story about that, but I feel I need to post a separate thread.
Well coming from the uk I noticed this as a kid seeing both versions

Trivia: They cut out alot of Denis Leary's improv dialogue as it made everyone laugh and it ruined scenes, you can see some of his henchmen laughing during his diatribe underground.

It involved a man needing the use the rest room and only the ladies room was available and instead of toilet paper there were 3 buttons he was told to strictly not push while in there, and I always thought the 3 sea shells evolved from that joke

Apparently, in the original edit, it was a much more thoughtful movie... leaning much harder into the "Brave New World" themes in the movie. And when the studio saw it, their reaction was one of, "So, you have Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes... and you tried to make a THOUGHTFUL movie?! Your editor is out, we're replacing him with our own editor, and we WILL make this into a straight action flick!"

Fun Fact: Jean Claude van Damme and Jackie Chan were considered for the villain, but Chan turned it down as he didn't like the script nor the idea of playing the bad guy. Van Damme was too busy with Hard Target.
Steven Seagal was considered for the lead, till Stallone was cast.
Lori Petty was cast as Lenina Huxley but dropped out and Sandra Bullock was cast.

Wesley Snipes REALLY wanted to work with Jackie Chan for quite a while, and offered him roles in just about every movie he was in, but never got a bite.
I think Jackie Chan would've killed as a bad guy in a movie. I can't remember a movie where he is a bad guy. Or even an anti-hero.

Great reactions from Emily. Kinda bummed they didn't discuss how this movie predicted the future since the future seen in this movie(some things have already come true) could still be coming. Our society still has 10 years to go full Demolition Man.
My favorite Stallone flick! Having watched this dozens of times I’ve never thought of Huxley being his daughter.
Sandra Bullock says she’s still asked about the three shells to this day.
Tango and Cash would be a great choice the next time you're looking for a Stallone flick, as would Judge Dredd, just so you can appreciate how craptacular it is and how amazing Karl Urban's later reboot Dredd truly is, when you get to that one! It's kind of like the Batman and Star Wars franchises have to suffer through the bad to get to the really good and great ones. Batman would be another fun one, if for no other reason than seeing Emily's reaction to Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, which I just know will be priceless!!!
I find it funny how the Stallone one was criticized because it was too true to the source. I did like the reboot and I did think it was a better film, but the Stallone one was much closer to the comic style.
@@joee7452 I can see that, and it really boils down to what does and doesn't translate well from a comic or graphic novel and live action. The outfits were so laughably comical they just stuck out like a sore thumb, it's the same problem that Batman Forever and even worse Batman & Robin had, trying too hard to keep that comic book esthetic which just doesn't translate well most of the time, there are a few exceptions.
@@joee7452 lot of the criticism I saw about his dredd, was that he took off his helmet, revealed his face and didn't wear a helmet for a majority of the film.
@@po5283 I didn't see the outfits or the world building as bad. I thought they fit the comic world fine. I do however think the story was borderline bad and the acting was horrible. I personally think that is what killed it, not the style.
@@wolf9walker I agree with that one. They had a big name actor and they wanted to bank on his fame over being faithful to the Dredd concept. That was on of the fatal flaws, not only was the acting bad, we could see them act it out and that made it worse.
