Fill the 3 gallon jug and empty it into the 5 gallon jug. Fill the 3 gallon jug again and empty as much of it as you can into the 5 gallon jug. The 3 gallon jug now has 1 gallon and the 5 gallon is full. Now empty the 5 gallon jug and pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug. Next fill up the 3 gallon jug again and empty it into the 5 gallon jug. The 5 gallon jug now has 4 gallons in it and thus the riddle is solved.
Maybe there's a neater solution but this one worked for me. :)
Yup, another way to do it is to fill the 5 gallon and pour 3 gallons from the 5 into the 3 gallon and empty the 3 gallon, So now the 5 gallons has 2 gallons, which you pour into the 3 gallon, fill up the 5 gallons, and pour 1 gallon into the 3 gallon since it already has 2. Presto 4 gallons. I remember having to do this puzzle in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic on the Manaan Planet.

Your solution completes in 8 steps the way he explains in the movie completes in 6 steps.
1. Fill the 5 jug
2. pour into 3 jug. This leaves 2 gallons in the 5 jug.
3. Empty 3 jug.
4. pour 2 gal left in 5 jug into 3 jug.. this leaves 1 gallon of empty space in the 3 gallon jug
5. refill the 5 jug.
6. Fill the missing 1 gal in the 3 jug from the 5 jug leaving 4 gal. in the 5 jug.

The original film is a classic, but this might be my favorite _Die Hard_ in terms of how fun it is. McClane and Zeus are such a good pair.

I love how, unlike the first movie, the cops and FBI are not dumb. They all do their jobs well. They just didn't figure it out like John did.

One of the greatest sequels of all time, and an incredible thriller in its own right. Can't say enough about this stunner.
Fun Fact: the tunnel sequence was depicting a real construction project that was going on in the mid 90's. AND, that tunnel, tunnel 3, is STILL under construction to this day. lol its not expected to be done until 2032.
I honestly think this is my favorite Die hard. Loved the first one, even liked the second, and actually liked all of the films in different ways, this one went above the rest. just that perfect blend of action and humor. the chemistry between John and Zeus, an amazing villain. and honestly even all the secondary characters were great. I esp loved Charlie sacrificing himself to try to protect the kids.
Also I know some of the underground stuff with the dumptruck was a remote control truck in a model tunnel, but i can't say which scenes were which.
The youngest little boy that played one of Sam Jacksons nephew's is Aldis Hodge. He's been in Hidden Figures, Jack Reacher 2, Black Adam, Straight Outta Compton and the recent The Invincible Man.
This is the best Die Hard film other than the original. A couple of things I love: the whole film actively pulls a reverse Uno on the previous two films - where 1 and 2 had McClane working in unfamiliar territory, going it alone with active resistance from everybody in authority, this one gives him home ground advantage (the thing with the ambulances, etc.), and his boss and colleagues all have his back, listening to him and taking him and his intel seriously; the three Wall Street guys (the one in the cab, the one with the snacks watching the train station cleanup with his co-workers from the office window, and the "Heavens to Betsy" guy) are all different actors, but are all cast and costumed to look identical to one another (balding, wearing the same kind of glasses, etc.); the "Pulp Fiction" reference ("smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo"); the little musical sting of "Singin' in the Rain" as McClane is surfing the dump-truck through the aqueduct; the actor who plays Katya, Simon's knife-wielding psycho girlfriend, who moves with that languid, predatory gait, is the musician Sam Phillips, who wrote the music for "Gilmore Girls" and "The Marvellous Mrs Maisel".
Languid is such a great word & perfectly describes how she moved. 👍
There are a couple of solutions to the math-water-jug problem. Here's one:
1 fill the 3, tip it into the 5. the 5 now has 2 gallons of empty space.
2 fill the 3 again.
3 pour from the 3 into the 5. The 5 will accept another 2 gallons, leaving 1 gallon in the 3. You NEED that particular one gallon:
4 dump out ALL liquid from the 5.
5 pour the ONE gallon from the 3 into the 5.
6 fill the 3 gallon jug again. Dump it into the 5. 3 + 1 yields FOUR gallons now in the 5.

The scene with the nervous white cop holding a gun on Zeus, was referenced a few years later in the Disney-Pixar film, "The Incredibles" (2004), where Frozone (also played-voiced by Samuel Jackson) is held at gunpoint by a nervous cop who is racially different from him. In both cases, the character played by Jackson is ethically compelled to disobey an order from the cop to remain still (The hero MUST take action, for the greater good). The scene from 'The Incredibles' is a nice callback to this earlier film.

Unlike in the first two Die Hard films, in this film, law enforcement as a group (in this case, the NYC police) are depicted as both competent, dedicated and extremely brave. I'm glad they did this.

Such a great film, and in my opinion, better than Die Hard 2. The chemistry between the leads, Jeremy Irons performance, the setting that really makes you feel that it's "summer in the city" - everything just works here. Glad you enjoyed it! FYI, If you plan on continuing with this franchise, the next one is decent, but stop after that. You're better off thinking Die Hard 5 doesn't exist, trust me.
John telling Zeus he should be at home "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" is a very subtle Pulp Fiction reference.
It's a song reference that's a lot older than Pulp Fiction. 'Flowers on the Wall' by The Stattler Brothers, 1965.

The gold is held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Liberty Street in Manhattan. My brother worked as a programmer in that building for a while in the 1970s. He told a story of how strict the security was there where one of the other programmers had to go to another floor and took the stairs rather than wait for an elevator. He found the door to the floor he wanted locked as well as every other door until he reached the first floor. When he opened it he was greeted by several guards, each armed with a submachine gun.
This was the first Die Hard I ever saw and it's still my favorite. Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance are all I need from the Die Hard series.

Always loved the opening of the movie, it gives you the standard wide city shots and than BOOM! Instantly the movie starts instead of giving us that slow character introduction for half a hour that movies do these days.
There are two ways to get the four gallons. Can you figure out both? Oh and a magic snap at 32:56. Made the cat disappear.
#1 Fill the 5 gallon jug to full, fill the 3 gallon jug with the water from the 5 gallon jug. Empty out the 3 gallon jug. Pour the last 2 gallons into the 3 gallon jug. Fill the 5 gallon jug and pour one gallon in the 3 gallon jug which already has 2 gallons and you're left with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

Random fact:
The cop who took the briefcase at 19:59 is Tony Halme. A Finnish boxer, tv-personality (Finnish version of the tv show Gladiators), WWF wrestler in the US (Ludvig Borga) and a 2003-2007 member of the Finnish parliament. Unfortunately he took his own life 2010.
He was a colourful person in public, if I say it mildly.
I met him once in a bar around 2004 I think. Spent couple of hours with him and his posse. Really nice and polite guy, but his public image was all about show and contradictions.
There's more and more about him, what a sad story it was. His whole life from the start. But he sort of made it and took risks.

Willis was actually in Harlem when he wore that billboard, but it was blank. They used CGI to put the words on there to keep from offending anyone in the public.
If I had to guess, them talking about it being frail was because some of the stuff they figured out was a bit of a stretch. Like when Simon asked what 21 out of 42 was and they figured out that it had to do with Presidents. And MccLane figuring out where they was because of a name on the bottom of a bottle of Aspirin. Lucky that Simon decided to purchase that Aspirin right next door to where their drop point was.
Most of the shots in the city were really shot on the streets. I was stuck in traffic at the scene where they thought the bomb was in the trash can. Never realized until I saw the movie and recognized the vehicles in the shot. I was one vehicle behind and didn’t make the cut.
This one is my favorite movie even though the first is objectively the best. It's the water jug puzzle for me. Don't ask me why; it just resonates with me.
I hope you noticed that one of the car's Bruce drives in this movie is the same car Bruce drove in Pulp Fiction. Also when asked by Jackson’s character Zeus, what he’s been up to since he got suspended from the force, Willis’ John replies, “smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo.” The same song Bruce is playing and singing in Pulp.Fiction.
The best DH sequel and an Archer tinnitus reference. It’s a good day.
Those shots of them in the taxi going through traffic are well done, where they almost hit the bus really looks like the actors were in the car. Second was just after where they are racing towards the close vehicle “oh dear” looked like Bruce Willis was actually driving full speed towards the cars.

Katya, Simon Gruber's assassins/lover, was played by singer/songwriter Sam Phillips. She started her career as Leslie Phillips and made Contemporary Christian Music. Her last album as a CCM artist, "The Turning" (Grammy nominated CCM), was helmed by famed producer T Bone Burnett. They married a few years later. Her subsequent pop albums are all very well made and usually critically acclaimed (including Grammy nominated the "Martinis & Bikinis" song "Circle of Fire"), but she never had the big hit to make her a household name. She also had a bit of fame as the songwriter and singer for "The Gilmore Girls" TV series. She's a musical artist I've followed for over 35 years now.
Absolutely love this one! And as a New Yorker, I love seeing how some parts of the city have drastically changed and how other parts look the same.

# Water Jug Puzzle Explained
Two jugs one 5 gallon jug and one 3 gallon jug
You need to fill one of the jugs with exactly 4 gallons.
Ok so you fill the 5 gallon jug full and then pour the water into the 3 gallon jug which will leave you with a full 3 gallon jug and a 5 gallon jug with exactly two gallons. NOW you pour out all the water in the 3 gallon jug leaving you with an empty 3 gallon jug and now you have a 5 gallon jug with 2 gallons of water in it.
You now pour those 2 gallons into the three gallon jug.
NOW you have an empty 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug with two gallons in it.
You fill up the 5 gallon jug all the way.
NOW you pour 1 gallon of that water into the 3 gallon jug (since the 3 gallon jug already had two gallons in it), it can only take in 1 more gallon of water before becoming full, leaving you a full 3 gallon jug and a 5 gallon jug with exactly four gallons of water in it.
Put that jug on the scale and you solve the riddle.
The frustrating thing about the water-jug riddle. I always figure it out..but, can never retain it, until I see this movie again…lol

The solution to the water in the canisters problem:

Fill up the 3 gallon canister again, pour it to the 5 gallon one and you have 4 gallons of water.

If you watch the movie in it's entirety, one will notice that the woman that McClain almost 'upskirts' while looking for the bomb is also in the station when the train with the bomb passes. She runs off to the right.
Federal reserve in NYC have guided tours , it's free , takes about hour, and each tour can accommodate up to 25 people .
NYC Federal reserve holds 497 000 gold bars, round 6190 tons , so you would need over 300 trucks to transport it out .
Vault is 80 ft/24 m under street level , subways in midtown Manhattan are only 35 ft/11m deep , so the drilling part was bogus too 🙂

By far my favorite "Die Hard".
Fill the five gallon up and pour it into the 3 filling that one up, you now have 2 gallons in the 5. Empty the 3 and pour the 2 gallons left in the 5 into the 3 leaving space enough for 1 gallon, which is where they were at in the movie when they showed them solving it. Anyway, refill the five gallon and pour the remaining 1 gallon into the three gallon container leaving 4 gallons remaining in the 5 gallon container.

Lethal Weapon is already a movie in the Die Hard universe, as Lethal Weapon is advertised in the magazine the woman on the plane is reading in Die Hard 2. So there was already a tie in before this movie
As to the german being gibberish, I'm not sure. I know a lot of german words and small phrases, but nothing long. When I watch this movie and the first one, the words are there, but I don't know if the syntax is correct. So it may be gibberish in that the sentence is structured wrong, but I cam hear the key words being said.

I love this movie!!! I saw this at the theater for my 14th birthday. I had become slightly infatuated with Jeremy Irons the previous summer after seeing The Lion King, so naturally when DH:WAV came out the following summer my Mom made sure to take me to see Mr. Irons on the big screen in all his sexy villainous glory!

I'm right along side there, the first Die Hard and this one are my favorites of the franchise. The duo of having Samuel L Jackson alongside Bruce Willis is just *chefs kiss* perfection! It definitely elevates this movie!

What was so funny when they evacuated the kids to just outside the school. Remember in the beginning what just a drop of that mixture did? What would 2,400 lbs do? I’d say couple square blocks would be leveled.

You brought up the Lethal Weapon/Die Hard script connection but they have the connection of having the same composer, Michael Kamen. He did Lethal Weapon 1-4 and Die Hard 1-3 (he passed away before Die Hard 4) along with a bunch of other movies on the channel like Iron Giant and Highlander. He also did one of my top 3 themes for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
It's a tragedy that we never got Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman in a movie together.

Could watch this movie 1000x over and never get bored. I used to have this and the 1st Die Hard on them old VHS tapes. Watched them so often that I eventually wore off the magnetic strip 😂!

Sam Jackson's Zeus is Mcclanes best Partner hes had in the entire series.
Another thing i like is how this is the true sequel to Die Hard 1 with Simon Gruber wanting revenge for his brother,as opposed to Die Hard 2 which is just John Mcclane in the same situation.
Plus i respect Simon Gruber and his men not being comfortable with killing Kids,it just was a well orchestrated plan to make all of the New York police too busy.
This highly entertaining movie is the pinnacle of the DH-franchise, following ones should be considered just loose ideas of some teenager reminiscing of 80´s movies

Fill 5 gallons, pour 3 into the 3, leaving 2 in the 5. Dump the 3. Pour 2 from 5 into the 3, leaving 5 empty. Fill 5. Pour 1 from 5 to 3, leaving 4 in the 5. It's deceptively simple.
I do have to wonder why school kids in danger always have to sing row your boat... All the way back to Dirty Harry and Invasion USA, then also this one. I think Family Guy poked fun of it when Peter becomes death and the girl scouts are singing "we like being alive" to the same tune.
The knife Simon's girlfiriend uses is a custom prop for the movie. Back in the days of VHS, none of us knew that and a lot of us would always wonder what kind of knife it is. DVD commenary broke a lot of hearts dropping the bombshell that's it's a cusom prop. Additionally, the actress who played the character is also apparently a famous singer. Ironic that we don't get to hear her talk.
