    • @StevenRice
      @StevenRice 2 года назад +3

that... is not correct at all. It was in the original theatrical release, then afterward Zeppelin and WMG denied any music being used even a few notes - the director was then told they played too many notes in that scene, like anything more than 2 notes would be 100k - and they had to edit in something different REALLY quick - like insanely quick - to where if you caught it in its LATER theatrical run, stairway wasn't in it. All VHS/DVD versions have the non-stairway music in it - but you can find a faked edit that restores the original gag with the first 4 notes of stairway.

When Mike Myers played the EMI executive Ray Foster in the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), he's dubious about releasing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as a single. He states, "What about 'I'm in Love with My Car'? I love that! That's the kind of song teenagers can crank up the volume in their cars and bang their heads to...Bohemian Rhapsody will never be that song."
That (special for him written line) was the reason he took that role.

Summer of ‘93. “Wayne’s World” was at a pop culture high. Queen was frequently being played on the radio again.
I was in my early 20’s, and had just come back home from being away for a few months. Sitting in a car with a bunch of friends and “Bohemian Rhapsody” comes on the radio. Of COURSE, I started head-banging… and, everyone in the car looked at me as if I just told them that I’m attracted to traffic lights.
Not that there’s anything wrong with traffic lights, but not head-banging to “Bohemian Rhapsody” is WEIRD.

The only exception was during their annual charity fundraising weekend--you could request any song in their current rotation for a $5 donation, any (rock) song in the station's library for $20, any song from any genre for $50, a song by your own band for $100, or both Stairway & Free Bird back-to-back for $500. 😂

Emily & Wayne's World - what a way to start off my day! I'm not worthy!
Re. the Next Gen vs Original Series thing... when Wayne's World was made Next Gen was still an ongoing series, and while it was very very popular, there was no telling at the time if it would have the long-lasting cultural impact that the Original Series had. I think today it is indeed generally recognised as the better series of the two, but it can still never be what the original was.
Sorry, I forgot to add a "Nerd Alert!" to the beginning of that last paragraph!

My preferred SNL era was late 80s to early 90s. Van down by the river, makin' copies, choppin' broccoli, church lady, etc. But yes, it's very highly dependent on the simple fact of when in your life you had time to watch SNL live. I didn't watch it at all during the 2000s so many of those bits go over my head and seem lame, but I'm sure if I was a different age it would be a different story.
I really don't think Emily should feel an ounce of guilt of doing the doodily-doodily transition, because the whole point of the joke is that it's emulating old-school film effects, it's not something that Wayne's World specifically invented. (I mean, yes, they made up the idea of saying it out loud but that's just, like, every joke/reference.)

    1. Tia Carrera/Cassandra sang all of her songs, She also has a Grammy for singing and voice over work.
    2. It's kinda weird watching Rob Lowe play a heavy.
    3. When Garth says, "I like to play". I was expecting a "That's what she said".🙄🤣
    4. Ed O'neil was slated to be a court-martial officer in the Vietnam era movie "Flight of the Intruder" but when screened by the audience he drew laughs because of the
Al Bundy roll so he had to be replaced by Fred Thompson.
    5. Flight of the Intruder would be a great movie for your to share with us "first time" HINT HINT

It's definitely a product of its time and a lot of the jokes to reflect that, especially since it was based off an SNL skit that was popular during that era, but, like you Emily, I REALLY wanted to know Glenn's story because the mystery of him intrigued me more than Wayne and Garthe's overall arc

This movie is a staple of my adolescence. I can quote damn near the entire film to this day even though I haven’t watched it in years. Did you ever see that episode of the Twilight Zone where the guy signed a contract and they cut out his tongue but it wouldn’t die it just grew and pulsated and gave birth to baby tongues

Saw this at the cinema... About 50 people in there ... I think I walked out half way through.
I was about 12... But I now appreciate it ...
It's mainly a huge American comedy. When you are a kid in England you don't get that comedy.

Only Americans will know SNL, as it's not shown in many other places, im a Brit and I've not seen a single episode, Wayne's world is a classic for different reasons in the rest of the world, it's humour is universal ☺️ I know that, in the UK, people were saying 'nooooot' at the end of their statements all the damn time.
And next generation is better in my opinion ☺️

The zoom reunion with the cast and crew of Wayne's World is a good watch as well. They even got the "suck cut" inventor. Alice Cooper had the Delaware title card as his green screen background during the reunion as well.

"Wayne's World" is so dependent on early 90's pop culture that it doesn't hold up all that great with the passing of time. Some of the humor is still there and still very funny, but becomes more of a slight chuckle than big laugh. But.....the WW soundtrack still holds up perfectly well today.

This was near the end of Rob Lowe's time as a standard actor, right before he started to become America's sweetheart. Hard to see him as a scumbag; it just doesn't work. Same as when he was in Tommy Boy. And after reading his books, I'm an even bigger fan.

A lot of it relies on very time-specific bits (like the Grey Poupon and all the commercial references) so it's understandable that they just don't land like they did at the time this was released. So don't feel bad for being critical. It's definitely not on you.

The head banging to Bohemian Rhapsody scene was retook so many times that the final cut their heads and necks was hurting so much they could barely move them. That's why their head banging look so rough. You can see it especially on Mike Myers face and moving.
Also Dana Carvey really didn't know the lyrics to the song too. So they kept the him trying to bad lip sing to the Bohemian Rhapsody in the movie.

SNL in the mid nineties was my jam (and, yes, right after SNICK). Roxbury guys and celeb jeopardy were always so good. Darrell Hammond could perfectly nail every celeb impression he did with his Bill Clinton being so spot on. And who could forget Norm Macdonald's weekend update. God rest his soul.

Another great movie from a Canadian sketch comedy group Kids in the Hall produced by Lorne Michaels of SNL is Brain Candy. If you can find it, Brain Candy is also like a Monty Python movie in that the main group play multiple characters.
