As a martial artist, this movie holds a special place in my heart because it introduced the American public to Gracie jiu-jitsu which went on to dominate the early days of the UFC. It also introduced the controversial martial known as Jailhouse Rock which was purportedly developed by prison inmates for defending themselves against surprise attacks within an enclosed space. Unlike traditional martial arts which treated hand-to-hand combat like a duel in which combatants started by squaring off against each other, JHR treated hand-to-hand combat as a fight for survival against an unexpected ambush, and it gained a fair amount of attention in the self defense community in the late eighties/early nineties.

For the record, Shane Black only really wrote this Lethal Weapon (his script for Part 2 was changed greatly and he really had nothing to do with 3 & 4), plus, if it helps, I´m actually a friend of Steven de Souza, who wrote Die Hard, and he maintains 100% that it is a Christmas movie! I believe that this is a Christmas movie just like It's a Wonderful Life. Riggs' character is comparable to George Bailey in that movie. They both felt they had no reason to live and were intent on killing themselves until guardian angels came into their lives. Murtaugh ends up being Riggs' guardian angel and he has a reason to live when he feels like a part of Murtaugh's family.

Yeah, when you are used to firearms you can control your blinking. You sight with both eyes open and hold both breath and eyes-open until after the shot (shots if semi-automatic/controlled burst/tightly timed single round) and then choose to blink after a slight pause, repeat as needed and at what speed based on rate/style/target details). Different handling of full-automatic weapons, of course. But yeah, firing common-use civilian or military weapons that aren't full-automatic it's both-eyes sighting with conscious breath and blink control.

With regards to actors firing guns without blinking, I understand that actors do get told to try and avoid blinking. It is far less visually distracting if a person can manage to unload without blinking like mad every time the gun goes off.
Strangely enough, actors not normally associated with action seem to do a lot better at not blinking than those that are!
