I remember a story about some middle-eastern Prince or something that was over here a few years ago, strait up ran over a person with their car and we couldn't do anything to them because of "diplomatic immunity", the guy got off scott free.

    • @douglascampbell9809
      @douglascampbell9809 3 года назад

Diplomatic immunity isn't really true immunity but also kind of is.
A person can be arrested but instead of prosecution they would be expelled from the country and their VISA revoked.
Case in point a US embassy workers wife was driving on the wrong side of the road and killed a teen. The US took her out of the UK and didn't even let the British police interview her of check her for alcohol.
She didn't even hold immunity just her husband.
This happened a in the middle of trump's presidency and he refused to send her back for questioning or trial and gave her retroactive immunity.
He could have decided that she just didn't have immunity but didn't. Probably because a lot of his embassy appointees were financial backers to his campaign.
I know the US has expelled a few people with immunity because they committed crimes in the US.

One of the best things in the Lethal Weapon movies is the friendship between Riggs and Murtough. Not just the chemistry between the two leads but the small elements they added like Riggs has his laundry at Murtoughs house, he’s basically an uncle to the kids, he knows where things were around the house, it really helped build that the relationship between all the characters had been going on for years when they were off screen.

Why were those henchmen quiet? The entire movie they hadn't mumbled a single word... Except the bearded guy in the stilt house... "This house is built on stilts." and "Kaffir." Even if they were scripted to talk... they'd mumble some English with guttural accent or Afrikaans, right?

No computer fakery. They don't use that shaky cam crap to hide anything. Each action scene is wonderfully choreographed, and directed. Each shot is perfectly edited to inform the audience what's going on. The acting is really good, and the comedy is gold. And they're always endlessly quotable: "They fuck you at the drive thru!!"

His vision of the character just didn't fit the idea of a movie franchise which is a shame, but I can see why he'd wanna give Riggs an ending like that. Riggs never fully recovers what he's been put through, he's always gonna have 'suicidal' part inside him along with the killer he can turn into.

I love all 4 of the "Lethal Weapon" movies! Although, the 3rd one is a tad light, and the 4th one is rather racist. But, all in all, they are all great action buddy cop movies!

I feel like they wanted to let Riggs get revenge for his wife cause originally they had planned for Riggs to die in the end of the film. Hence why the movie ends the way it does. They weren't sure if they wanted to continue the series.

I think the point about Riggs wife being killed by the South Africans is that he didn't know that. So up until that point he thought that it was just a random accident, which as you say then lead to his psychological state up until that point. So by him learning that wasn't the case in LW2 and having the chance to avenge her death, it opens up the chance for him to move on in later films rather than constantly using that trope throughout every film.

You should have watched this before Loaded Weapon 1. You would have got more of the references since a lot of gags are from the second Lethal Weapon movie. As for diplomatic immunity, there is an ongoing issue between the UK and the US where Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US diplomat accidentally killed a British kid with her car by driving on the wrong side of the road. She fled back to the US because she had diplomatic immunity at the time.

Couple of fun facts: 1) The female cop with Riggs & Murtaugh, when they are at the station, and in the 'house on stilts,' is the same actress who played John Connor's foster mum in Terminator 2. 2) When Riggs, Leo, and the bad guy all fall into the hotel pool (the InterContinental Hotel Century City), you can see the lower floors of a skyscraper in the near distance, beyond the hotel walls. That is Fox Plaza, aka Nakatomi Plaza (to Die Hard fans). You have already watched both of those movies 👍

"Hank from Breaking Bad" - He's also one of the SWAT guys in T2, who shoot Miles Dyson in the Cyberdyne Systems building, he's the one who see's Dyson holding the object above the detonator as he's dying, and tells everyone to evacuate now.
Also, the bad guy from the very beginning who loses all the Krugerrand, is the psychopath from Shawshank Redemption, in the 'Sisters' gang who would attempt to rape and beat Andy constantly (until he got ruined by the Lead Guard (Clancy Brown) who was also The Kurgan in Highlander.)
I could keep doing this all day...I watch too many movies.

For me this is the best of the 4 Lethal Weapon movies. Rather than trying to recycle old gags which would never live up to the first movie, a common mistake in sequels, they introduced Joe Pesci and made the humour new and fresh. Tons of action, touches on a very relevant subject of the time which in some ways is atill relevant, and really ties in with the first movie well, especially with Riggs' wife's death, bringing a new level of closure to the caracter.

Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US diplomat (and supposedly a CIA spy) killed a motorcyclist in Great Briton while driving on the wrong side f the road. She fled the scene of the accident, fled the country, and has NEVER been extradited or held criminally responsible... due to "Diplomatic Immunity".

The only 'knowledge' I have on diplomatic immunity comes from Stan Lee about Doctor Doom; lord of Latveria, who couldn't be arrested by any super-hero! Stan even said that what he liked most about Doom is that "Conquering the World isn't illegal!" It's what you do to get there that can be I guess.

For Diplomatic immunity, the state department can revoke their credentials. This forces them to leave the country. The country of origin can then take the evidence and try them, or even turn them over to the authorities in the country where the crimes were committed. However, I think a consulate has less protection then a main Embassy.

Yea and I think the real issue in this movie was the opinion that they wouldn't be prosecuted back home or something - justice would not be delivered to the extent that Riggs and Murtaugh required (inevitably: death penalty)

This reaction reminded me of a film that I would love to, nay, need to see a reaction to; The 1999 cult classic "The Boondock Saints"
I don't know if Matt has watched this suggestion himself, but if he hasn't then a double first time watching would be quite epic.
And if he has, he probably knows the exact scene that made me think of that movie from this reaction 😅
