    A few more fun facts:
    1) Val Kilmer did all his own singing in this movie.
    2) they actually used the head mold of Peter Cushing they made for this movie and laser scanned the interior of the mold to make the digital mask they used to 'resurect' Grand Moff Tarkin for 'Rogue One, a Star Wars Story', 21 years after his death. The studio recieved permission from his family to use his likeness in the film, but only had 2D images to go off until somebody remembered the mask still existed.

They put effort into movies before CG came around and made everyone lazy. CG has a place, but look at 70s and 80s and practical effects always looked better. The Fly with Goldblum, the makeup work in that movie was astounding, amongst many many others. As for comedies, Naked Gun, this one and Airplane are great examples of them putting in the work. Think of the sight gags that maybe take up 5 seconds of screen time, but probably took all day or longer to do. That doesnt happen anymore, too time consuming and expensive, so CG it is.

Val Kilmer actually sang the songs in this. That's his own voice. He's not lip syncing. (Well I mean he is but only in the sense that all music videos are done that way, with the artist recording their song in a studio first then later lip syncing to it when filming the video.)
His performance in this is what landed him his serious role later in the Doors movie. They knew he's good at singing as well as acting

    • @Grethrey123

Apparently when the movie The Doors came out, surviving band members listened to the soundtrack and said they couldn’t tell the difference between Kilmer’s voice and the actual recordings of Jim Morrison, Kilmer was just that good. So sad what’s happened to him now

A few things. They got some really big stars in this. First of all, the spy who ended up crushed in the car was played by Omar Sharif, known from huge films like Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. And the bookseller from the weird backwards scene was Peter Cushing, known from the old Hammer horror films, but you'd probably know him best as Governor Tarkin in Star Wars.
Many years later, long after Peter Cushing had died, Star Wars brought back Governor Tarkin in Rogue One. Top Secret was a great help to them, because there was a cast of his face for the weird prosthetic, and they used that to recreate his face digitally.

    "It's lesser known, I don't know why"
It bombed on release. It wasn't the easiest movie to market. A lot of the posters just featured the cow, which, out of context, is still funny but doesn't tell you anything about the movie.
It's a weird spoof: It's an Elvis movie, but it's also a spy movie that's Cold War and WWII at the same time.
Airplane is easier to wrap your brain around: it's a spoof of disaster movies. Elvis movies and WWII spy movies were passe by that time, whereas disaster movies were enjoying massive BO popularity.
    "If you had to choose..."
My favorite of their's is "Kentucky Fried Movie" just because I'm a martial arts fan and "Fistful of Yen" is one of the best Hollywood martial arts comedies ever. But out of all the rest of their movies, Top Secret is my favorite because I feel like it had the most creative and inspired ideas. There may be funnier moments, but their high point as innovative, comedic film-makers were the backwards scene and the underwater fight scene.

My Val Kilmer story: So, I used to work at Tower Video on Sunset Blvd. 25ish years ago and one night Val Kilmer came in with two kids. He asked if we had a copy of Real Genius to buy. I said, "you're in it, don't you have a copy ?" He said he'd lost it years ago and his kids just found out about it and wanted to see it now. I said, "what about Top Secret ?" and he shakes his head at me while quietly saying, "shhhhhhh shh shh noooooo".
Then we had a nice talk about his role in Frank Whaley's directorial debut, the autobiographical, hard to watch it's so painful, Joe The King. Val plays an alcoholic abusive Dad and kills it. He was happy to hang out and chat movies and about 2 months later he came back to do just that with me without buying anything.

a large part of why Top Secret! is much less well known than Airplane! is largely due to poor advertising.
they didn't advertise that it was made by the same creators as Airplane!
they advertised the "terrible movie" 4th wall break which put off audiences at the time.
and it was released close to a lot of other big blockbusters.

I wonder if Tom Cruise learning to hold his breath for 7 minutes underwater was a jealousy thing and he has been chasing after Val Kilmer ever since.

Such an underappreciated movie. Airplane! get all the press, but this one is so good and so funny!

    Galaxy Quest.
As Spaceballs is parody of Star Wars, Galaxy Quest is kind of parody of Star Trek. Kind of.

Excellent movie suggestion, Miroslav! It parodies so much but still holds up more with it's narrative.

Solid Movie list. Here's some more great comedies: Hot Shots is a great Top Gun spoof, then Hot Shot Part Deux, and a great Robin Hood spoof - Robin Hood: Men in Tights. And the Police Academy series is another great ridiculous comedy series! And my favorite dumb comedy move: Down Periscope.

I freakin' lose it with the singing horse every time. EVERY time. For months after the first time I saw this, all my brother had to do to have me break down laughing was go "Ya, ya, YAA, YAAAA!"

      FINALLY! Thank you.
I remembered incorrectly that the movie was called "Ein Genie" in German - so I never could find it online.
That movie is actually called "Was für ein Genie" - Because of your "Real Genius" I finally found it.
Thank you very much and YES! A great movie.

Great movie! I like “Top secret!” better than “Airplane!”. Generally I tend to like British humour more than American, don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Anyway, great fun seeing you react to this film! ✨👌✨
