It’s hard to imagine that this film is coming up on its 10-year anniversary next month.
Ten years ago, when this film came out, I wasn’t that familiar with Guardians. My only exposure was seeing others dress as Groot, Star-Lord or Rocket for varied comic-cons. To experience this side of the MCU was unique. It did have a feel like Star Wars (1977).
When I attended the 10pm showing of the sneak preview, it was highlighted by an early pre-game show sponsored by Tate’s; a local comic book store based in South Florida. Many showed up in cosplay, some won free swag from the store, everyone including myself had a blast watching this film, and I even led a few of the audience to clap during The Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back” at the end of the movie.

    • @jamespetkwitz8737
      @jamespetkwitz8737 5 месяцев назад +8

Yeah, the questions of it's viability also might have had an impact on Ant-Man as well. I remember articles at the time, worried that GotG was going to be the first real marvel flop because it was "soo different and weird" and it made the execs worried about Edgar Wright producing something that would have been tonally and stylistically different than the rest of the Mainline marvel movies.. And the added pressure for cameos and having it tie into the MCU directly ultimately forced Wright to leave.. then GotG was a huge money maker.

The thing about the Avengers is that it can have almost anyone in it at any given moment, based on need and availability. It's easier to list who has never acted as an Avenger even once in the comics than who has. Hell, I'm pretty sure I've been an Avenger at this point.
In the late 80s/early 90s Spider-Man books there was a kind of background gag where he really wanted the Avengers to make him a full regular member because he was constantly being tapped as a reserve where it was just kinda silly to not just keep him in the loops. The implication being they didn't want to have to deal with him (he infamously annoys his allies as much as his foes) unless they absolutely had to, and he really is a useful teammate in most situations.

Thor doesn't explain this well because they're translating from old myths to scifi, but the nine realms are basically the 9 planets that Asgard conquered to create their empire, although they mostly take a hands off approach today. Xandar is a separate power, more like a trade empire. They have a much larger presence in the galaxy, but they are more like Star Wars: Xandar is the capitol of a bunch of separate races who all work together.

I think what makes the MCU work beyond its superhero “genre” is that it doesn’t treat superhero movies like they’re all just “superhero” movies, if that makes sense. What I mean is, they make great movies in a multitude of genres that just happen to tell stories about superheroes. You’ve got spy thriller movies like Winter Soldier, pure action like Iron Man, war movies like Captain America, now Sci-Fi here in Guardians. And it doesn’t stop here, their films get even more diverse and nuanced moving forward. Sometimes it doesn’t quite work, but more often than not it succeeds.

Like, not just being an origin movie for one Spiderman, but for a guy with gadgets, a green woman, a simple warrior, a tree and a racoon, pull that off - instant win.

Howard the Duck was a sort of satirical character who first appeared in the early 1970s and was typically used in the craziest space/fantasy stories they could cook up. He was the source of some mild legal conflict between Marvel and Disney, who felt like he too closely resembled Donald Duck. Marvel agreed to make him wear pants.
The 1986 movie is one of the more notorious "so bad it's good" flicks of the '80s.
Howard has shown up in a couple more cameos in the MCU but one of them is so small and fast you probably won't notice it.

Fun fact: director James Gunn is currently one of the co-head DC Studios/DCU (DC Universe) similar to what Kevin Feige is to the MCU, he's also the director for the upcoming Superman movie next year, Gunn's DCU also takes inspiration from MCU's PHASES with his being called CHAPTERS, Gunn's DCU "Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters" will kick off starting next year with his Superman. DC Comics are a rival company to Marvel Comics with some of their characters having taken some inspirations to one another.

The _Collector_ is extremely ancient (first to evolve after the big bang, one of the oldest in the universe) similar to the _Grandmaster_ (a name worth remembering). For the most part, he could be considered neutral, although he'd likely not be the best thing for a random human to run into.

When this hit theaters, my future wife & I were visiting Portland, OR (pre-covid), and looking to have a little downtime after all the nature walks. We were already Marvel film fans, but this one blew our minds!
The downdraft track became one of our favorite. Fooled Around And Fell in Love would be one of our songs during the reception.
Sadly, she passed from Cancer in 2020, when our son was only 2yo. As he is only 6yo currently, I haven't shown him this film, but it will probably resonate w/ him. Though this film resonates with me for our relationship, she was also a Huge Deadpool fan, where as I am a Huge Wolverine fan. Do, obviously, the new Deadpool 3 is one I'm not missing. Even plan on taking her ashes w/ me to see it.

36:12 You're watching an IMAX home release version of the movie. Some shots were specifically shot for IMAX screens which are very tall. So the aspect ratio can change between certain scenes. If you get a blu-ray of The Dark Knight with the IMAX release you'll see a ton of this since a lot of the major and really cool scenes were shot with IMAX cameras.

I have an old-school connection to the guardians. They were originally a comic that I just love from 1969 that had Yondu and a crystal guy and some others and then about eight years later there was a marvel special comic book featuring star Lord that has nothing to do with the guardians, but the artist and writer on comic the absolute top pinnacle of comic book teams at that time, John Byrne, Terry Austin, and Chris Claremont . Marvel later, took star, Lord and combined him with the name guardians with a whole new crew and then this movie was a throwback to all of it in pieces. For us comic book folks it’s always amazing to see how they rearrange it and still make it work.

Now while it was couple of years between Guardians films, and a couple of other MCU films came out between them, I believe chronologically Guardians 2 is the next story that happens in the MCU
A couple of cast notes - Sean Gunn (James' brother) played ravager 1st mate Kraglin, also did the motion capture performance for Rocket while filming. He often plays in his brother's projects, he plays two (small) parts in The Suicide Squad, and will return in the upcoming DCU series The Creature Commandos (an animated, but intergrated series) on Max. But most people know him as Kirk from Gilmore Girls.
Long time friend and collaborator Nathan FIllion voiced the convict who Groot picks up by his nostrils.
Robot Chicken creator, and former Scott Evil from Austin Powers, Seth Green voices Howard the Duck
James Gunn himself provided the motion capture for baby Groot dancing in the post credit scene.

Rocket Racoon and Howard the Duck come from the same Halfworld experiments. Also the space dog is the Soviet dog, Laika, that was launched into Orbit on Sputnik 2 in 1957. While she died in orbit from overheating and then burned up on reentry months later, GotG makes it look like she was "collected" and survived the mission.

Very possibly the finest trilogy in the MCU, but opinions vary. A brilliant ensemble, and James Gunn is an amazing filmmaker with damn-near impeccable musical taste.
Edit: 13:32 Case in point, right here, and I love that Shan loves it. Blue Swede are one of the Greatest One-Hit Wonders of All-Time.🤘
14:08 I just do the "Ooga-Chaka" part. More History: In 1973, the Swedish pop rock group Blue Swede recorded a cover version of the B.J. Thomas original, which included the "ooga chaka" introduction from a 1971 cover by Jonathan King. King had heard Johnny Preston's "Running Bear", which was the inspiration for the "ooga chaka" chant.

33:09 Asgard calls them realms, we call them planets. Its perfectly understandable to think that maybe realms means something fancy like dimensions or whatever, but in reality Thor can fly a ship from Asgard to Earth and vice versa. The Bifrost just lets them create a wormhole for faster/easier travel and they use fancy words like realms instead of planets.

Director James Gunn said he wanted to make a colorful space opera - emphasis on "colorful". In the director's commentary, he was quite proud to point out that the colors of the screens in the sequence at around 29:40 were all directly lifted from Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey".

The dog is a telepathic Russian space dog that ends up becoming Chief of security of Knowhere in the books. Cosmo was introduced in the Nova comic series when The Nova Corps homeworld is destroyed but the world mind and power(aka Nova Force) is downloaded into Richard Rider of Earth. He basically becomes a cosmically powered being that ends up fighting along side characters like Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill and the GOG. He and Quill save the universe at one point. Sacrificing theirselves in the process but later are found to be alive and they are both still very much active in the books. Nova has been in the X-Men books lately and Guardians just wrapped up another series of books and storyline. The lineup of GOG characters has changed quite a bit over the years but since the movie came out they are pretty much sticking with this lineup for now. I was obsessed with Silver Surfer and Cosmic storylines which led me into loving Guardians of the Galaxy. And the movie was so good. Even though it strayed far from the books it was still amazing.❤❤❤

The Guardians of the Galaxy were a pretty obscure team when this movie came out. I was a big fan of the comic, but I had doubts when this movie was first announced. I just felt like such an obscure team wouldn't do well at the box office. I am so glad that I was proven wrong and this movie became incredibly popular.
It still amazes me that characters like Groot and Rocket Raccoon are household names now. If you would have told me that back in 2010, I would have never believed it.

In the Blu Ray presentation of Tron Legacy there's a title card that appears at the start to explain that the aspect ratio shift is due to different scenes having been done in different aspect ratios to either accommodate 3D or IMAX presentation. When creating the home edit, they went with the aspect ratio that showed the most of what was done for the scene. Prior to GotG's release, Gunn said that for the IMAX 3D version of the movie he deliberately changed the aspect ratio of the movie at times to make specific scenes more immersive or intimate. That aspect ratio shift was carried over into the home release.

Btw - The Orb, the Infinity Stones, the Maltese Falcon, the Ark Of The Covenant, the Death Star Plans, the Holy Grail, etc. - the generic term for all of these kinds of things is 'the MacGuffin". The term originated in the old Alfred Hitchcock movies, being The Thing in the story that everybody is chasing after, even if it is unclear why.

Something I'd like to strongly suggest to you - After Avengers 4 (the final one) but before Guardians Vol 3, try to watch (whether or not you do a reaction to it), please try to watch the Guardian Holiday Special. It's only about 45 minutes long, and has some things that get further fleshed out in Guardians Vol 3. It's hard to convey how much of a tectonic shift Guardians was in tone coming into the MCU. It was the one thing that felt truly DIFFERENT. It was the first time Marvel went really off into the universe and started to explore the cosmic aspect of Marvel. There are a LOT of easter eggs that you will only understand if you're into comics. For example, the big head "Knowhere" is actually the head of a celestial - and not just any celestial, but the one that was killed by Knull, the Symbiote God (the being that created Venom's race). There's a whole lot of background lore that ties into the comics and it really felt like great fanservice without it being in everyone's faces like "this is an obvious fanservice moment, and if you don't read comics then you're not cool" sort of way.
Arguably top 5 scripts in the entire MCU.
The Guardians of the Galaxy comics were VERY obscure to say the least. At best, they were sort of B or C-listers that very rarely crossed over with more mainline heroes like Thor. They made some tweaks to the character origins for the movies, but they work out pretty well for the story the MCU is trying to tell with them. The Guardians movies are all about found family - moreso than any of the other superhero movies.
