@@youtmeme It's more complicated than just saying he is 1 or 2 people. Dissociative identity disorder, is like taking a vase and breaking it. Cap’s fear in a sense IS going home: Cap is a soldier... Cap is THE soldier. He cannot live without a war to fight; his sense of Justice and need to protect the little guy is too strong; he can’t stop himself but to step up to the plate. So, ironically, imagining a world where there is no threat, where there is no war, is terrifying to him. What would he do? Especially since, as you said: He LOST PEGGY! She was the only thing he could have hung up the Shield for and now he does not have that (Ultron even calls him out on it when he says to him: “God's righteous man… pretending you could live without a war”) So that is the fear he saw in his vision: Peggy telling him “The war is over, Steve: We can go home!” and then the room being empty of people because Steve knows Peggy is dead and he has no one to go home to...!
An interesting take. My take was that he fears giving in to the temptation of an easy life. From the very beginning, he has been told that he ought to take the easier road and give up by every single character except Peggy. He fears that that will make him less of a person. It is only at the end that he conquers that fear, and has his own “you can rest now, we’re going to be okay “ style moment.
To me of all the dialog between Nat and Bruce the line, it makes everything easier even killing, really hits home why Nat thinks she is a monster. Also Bruce thinking that of himself is like yeah totally fair.

A few points I'd like to make: 1. It weren't suits who attacked, its the 'Iron Legion', bots made with basically the same tech as Tony's suits 2. Wanda showed them their worst nightmares, that includes things that happened already, like with Black Widow 3. Hulk and Bruce are TWO personalities, they share a lot but when Hulk runs away it's not Bruce's descision. 4. Calming down Hulk to make him transform back to Bruce is a mental conditioning thing, it's triggered by key words and sensations (touch) 5. In the end Wanda ripped out the 'heart' of ONE bot, the one escaped is of course another one, but they are all Legion Love those reactions, can't wait to see what Infinity War and Endgame will do to you ...
@@spencernaugle As said, Hulk and Bruce share a lot, different personalities but not completely seperated, so the conditioning is done more on Bruce's side.
For the record, the infighting in The Avengers, wasn't JUST because of the scepter. The feelings they had that they fought about were real things they felt/thought. The scepter intensified them all bringing it all out.
2:37 Like any well-written story, it's more complicated than 1 simple reason. The avengers personalities already were in conflict, and the scepter was tapping into that conflict and making it worse.
I think people came around to it, with the ability of hindsight. People hated it back then, cause they felt it didn't stand on its own. But it wasn't necessarily meant to. It was moreso meant to set up what was still to come. I wish we could've had *MORE* Ultron, and the whole "Age" of Ultron last longer...but I otherwise love this movie
@@AscendedXSaiyan Yeah, it was more like "Week of Ultron". That's one overall complaint about the MCU - and often other superhero movies - that long-running villains in the comics are shown in one movie, and then killed off, never to be seen again.
Ultron is James Spader. You might recognize him from The Blacklist or when he was younger in a bunch of 80s moves like Pretty in Pink or later in Stargate the movie
Thanks again for watching all of these. I Love your Marvel reactions. This is actually my favorite of all the Marvel movies! I like the dialogue, the direction, & the attention to the civilian bystanders.
We are almost in the 3rd Act of The Infinity Saga! And the first movie of Phase 3 makes Age of Ultron even better by consequence. But first... Paul Rudd!

It is not a coincidence that Whedon is the one they use for the avengers movies. Very few directors and writers can do ensamble like he can. Buffy. Firefly. Avengers.
I love watching these movies again as an adult and picking up all the themes and little details. Like how Ultron is Tony's "son" so Ultron takes on Tony's habits like wanting to save the planet or constantly upgrading his equipment.
I really enjoy this movie. Definitely underrated in the MCU. Super rich in character development, resources are really explored, it has everything. Chillin on the couch after party at 4am, to global extinction.
I’d never looked into any of the behind the scenes stuff for this movie. I wouldn’t have ever guessed Spader was actually on set as Ultron. I always assumed it was voice over.
I understand we get tired of the things we do every time, but I like your intro. Very clear knowing you stand as the BFF and resident movie watching pal. Gets me right away to know exactly what I'm getting into with your reactions.
Oh MAN! I really hope you like this one!! It got a lot of flack upon release, but in retrospect I really think it does a huge amount in furthering the story of the MCU. And the vocal/acting performances from both Paul Bettany and James Spader are absolutely perfect for their respective roles. Can't wait to see what you think!!
Banner/Hulk wants to run away because he doesn't believe he can control himself from hurting innocent people. You know, that whole fight scene in the city with "Veronica"? (Iron Man in a giant suit)
The reason Natasha tells Bruce not to turn green in the chaos of the Stark tower party is that The Hulk isn't very good at directing the rage. He just SMASHES! He would tear the tower apart. In the first Avenger movie, when Hulk first appears (morphs) on the helicarrier it is not a good thing. Maria Hill warns Fury that "The Hulk will tear this place apart" Which is Loki's plan and The Hulk almost does just that. Only stopping because he jumped out onto the fighter jet. BTW, in the comics, Ultron is much more formidable. But I get it, we got other big baddies ahead. Thanos is a beast!!!
The fact that people regard this as the 'weakest' Avengers movie shows just how good the overall quality is. There's a lot to like even if it is a bit of retread of the first movie and it could be more accurately called 'Weekend of Ultron'.
"Sun's getting real low" - that whole thing is Black Widow's lullaby for Hulk. Basically trigger words to put Hulk to sleep and force him to transform back into Banner. The important thing to understand is that Bruce Banner and the Hulk are NOT the same guy. Banner doesn't like Hulk, and Hulk doesn't like Banner, and Hulk HATES being trapped in Banner and not being able to be Hulk. Rejecting Black Widow at the end and flying off in the Quinjet is because Hulk doesn't want to be turned back into Banner.
A lot of great things happened in this movie that really moved the overall story forward. Terrific to see the updated lineup for the Avengers! James Spader was a perfect choice to do the voice of Ultron.
I never understood why people hated on this movie. I love the first Avengers movie but this one is the one I prefer to watch. I think it just gives me Buffy vibes more!
I never got it either. A hardcore comic nerd tried to explain to me that they changed too much from the comics it was based on but that happens all the damn time when adapting movies from other materials. I thought it was great. I'm not sure I think it was better than the first movie but it certainly didn't deserve a lot of the hate it got.
I think people didn't like that ultron wasn't made by antman, the original creator of the character, and he wasn't even in the movie at all. I was aware of that, but wasn't enough to swade me personally.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 As one of those fans, my issue was that they took an epic dimensional and timeline hopping story and just did basic fights with Ultron. The film was good for what it was. They just squandered a story on the level of "Endgame" for it. The "Age of Ultron" comics would be well suited for a series of movies involving not only the Avengers but the X-Men and tons of other characters we haven't seen on screen yet.
When it came out this fell a little flat for a number of people. After the first Avengers , GotG and the winter soldier expectations were sky high. I personally liked it and I feel like it's become more respected over time. There are a lot of little things that pay off in later stuff sprinkled in this one.
"I'm so bored of my intro, you guys." Fun fact: the piano player on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was an unbelievably talented jazz pianist named Johnny Costa, who initially resisted Fred Rogers' offer to be the musical director for the show, as he felt it would get old really quick. He finally agreed, as long as Rogers promised him he would never use recycled intro music that got old. Mister Rogers wanted him on the show so badly that he agreed he could play the intro song live on set for every single episode--which he eventually did. Mister Rogers had to sing that song almost 900 times, never recycling the audio once, and Johnny Costa improvised his arrangement of the song every time, and never played it exactly the same way twice. Not sure how this turns into advice. Maybe you just need a catchy intro song? :) You always have a guitar behind you, that only comes out for a couple of the livestreams, and I'm getting such a "Chekhov's gun" vibe from you having it in the shot all this time.
19:25 the thing about the team is that they all have the *same* fear- that they have no place in the world, because they’re monsters. Widow was trained and mutilated to kill. Thor is a “destroyer.” Steve can only function in wartime. Hulk is…Hulk. And Tony thinks the world will end if he doesn’t work fast enough to stop it. Their belief in their own monstrosity unites them.
-Natasha's vision showed her haunted memories of her past. -Thor's vision was just like Tony's at the beginning where he saw his world's destruction and everyone he loved dead -Cap's vision was taunting him by showing him the life he never got to have had he returned from the war instead of going in the ice As far as some background on the twins.... In the comics, Wanda and Pietro are part of the X-Men universe. They're not just mutants, but more specifically, they're the biological children of X-Men supervillain Magneto. Now as far as the movies go, the rights to all X-Men characters were owned by 20th Century Fox. Until Disney bought Fox in 2019, all X-Men movies were produced under Fox Studios. Now regarding this movie, director Joss Whedon fought for permission from Fox to allow him to use the X-Men characters of Pietro and Wanda. Fox granted him the rights but there were conditions. They weren't allowed to use the code names of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and they weren't allowed to refer to them as "mutants". "Mutant" is a comic book term that universally refers to characters in the X-Men world-both heroes and villains. So the term "mutant" was off the table. Instead, the twins were constantly referred to as "enhanced". Also also, being that their comic book father Magneto wouldn't be a part of the MCU, they had to change the family history of the twins and instead made their parents simple Sokovian civilians rather than having a genocidal maniac for a father.
I think at the time many of us were kinda let down by this movie because we expected some sort of big climax like Avengers 1, but bigger, based on where it was in the timeline and the momentum. Also a lot of the "Phase 2" movies were starting to set a MCU specific tone, that would become iconic by the end of Phase 3, but this movie felt a lot more like a Phase 1 movie in ways. All that being said, in hindsight it works a hell of a lot better as a transitional chapter with a lot of set up than it did trying to bear the weight of expectations at the time. I think a lot of people who were disappointed by it initially actually think more fondly of it now than they originally did, if they've revisited it.
Cap is easily my favorite, Steve is the leader of the Avengers, but since RDJ (and Jon) are the reasons the MCU became as big as it did Tony is always in a big spotlight. Deservedly so!
The sponsored service doesn’t actually list the full price for the eventual collection anywhere on their site, which I think is a very anti-consumer practice. So I made a spreadsheet of the fluctuating subscription cost (they did not make this easy) and the full collection will cost $2,867.61 over the course of 48 monthly payments. Average payment is around $63.26.
Your reaction has made me appreciate this movie more. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it and it’s a lot better than I remember it when compared to, well, we’ll just say films of today.
When Pietro says, "You didn't see that coming," right as he dies, it was a very meta line. It had been leaked that a protagonist, possibly an avenger, would die in this movie. All of the clues throughout the movie pointed to the idea that it would be Clint Barton. Right at the moment that you thought it was finally going to happen and Clint was about to die, Pietro jumps in and ends up being the one to die. It was very surprising. I'm sure others will go into explaining why they had to kill him off so I'm not going to get into that now, but it's something that would be helpful to know for somebody who wasn't watching this movie when it came out and following all of the gossip around it.
I figure a speedster would make the fight against thanos and other threats simpler. Since most marvel threats could be ended/avoided if someone was fast enough. Which is why dc has to up the antie since they have a few speedsters on hand.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 Looking through the comments, I don't see anybody else bringing it up, so I will explain it briefly. At this time, Fox owned the rights to anything related to mutants or the X-Men. Wanda and Pietro had been part of both the Avengers and the x-men. Both franchises wanted to use the characters at about the same time, and they were working out the legalities of it. Fox would exclusively reserve the right to use the titles Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. They agreed that they would each use both characters in one movie but that the MCU would be able to continue using Wanda, and the fox X-Men Universe would be able to continue using Quicksilver. This is why Pietro had to be killed off and could not continue in the MCU. What you said might have some bearing on why they ended up with Wanda instead of Pietro, I'm not sure, but this is the story on why they couldn't keep both.
Age of Ultron is widely underrated, I think. I like the character moments and development throughout the film, I like Nat/Banner (which I think is a pretty unpopular take), I enjoyed the writing. Much better than it’s usually given credit for. Glad you enjoyed it!
38:49 Couple of things that may explain it: Bruce probably was tired of always turning into the hulk, especially against his will. He said he didnt want to turn but natasha threw him and forced it upon him. Like imagine several years of loki, natasha, wanda etc just forcing u to be in mental pain and having to live with the consequences because of the destruction u caused against ur wishes. Hes also already expressed the possibility of stopping the hero journey regardless, even as a doctor, because even though he couldnt have kids, he still was close to running away with natasha and ending his time as an avenger. And clint wanted to retire, tony was debating whether to stop and build on his home life, and maybe bruce wanted to retire aswell
37:52 the thing with quicksilver is the character was split between two properties. Fox/Marvel had the mutant version of him so Disney/Marvel couldn’t use the mutant version of Quicksilver so they had to say he was created from the mind stone. 38:53 its like Banner is in control at this point cause Banner would want to hide so the hulk doesn’t do anymore damage. 39:48 PHAT. 39:59 he’s no longer Jarvis. Jarvis no longer exists. He was rewritten into Vision’s matrix.
Excelsior. That was Stan’s sign off word When he was the editor of Marvel comics and he had a column every month, we talked about the latest stuff he would sign off with that word we all loved him for that so him saying it here is super Duper fan service
When my brother let me read his Marvel comic book collection in the 1970s The Avengers was my favorite title and Vision (Jarvis-in-human-form in the MCU) was my favorite character. So this film became one of my favorites instantly. I really like the way Vision's gentle, thoughtful, kind, nature was captured in the MCU.

Ultron said "they've taken my vision" in regards to the vibranium body, it was a throwaway line, but it's where he got his name from. 44:42 it was also a clever way of establishing instant trust in Vision later! Whedon didn't skimp on the writing.
I knew he did the voice of Ultron, but I didn't realize that Jame Spader actually did any physical acting in this. Always thought it was a wholly CGI character.
6:59 - Here's a hint: his name is Quicksilver. 20:19 - Meet the Hulk Buster suit. 25:44 - Well, this is the Mind Stone. It's not as...unsubtle...as the Power Stone. 35:08 - This is the point where watching Agents of SHIELD comes back to add depth to the movies. 40:54 - We'd waited 8 years for this moment...and they made us wait 4 more. 43:10 - The character is named Vison. This is actually NOT his most recognizable form, but it's the one people who where introduced through the MCU are most familiar with.
I feel like the stretch from here through Endgame (and maybe a few other movies that follow) is extremely strong! I really can't wait to see what you think of some of the upcoming movies! They're so much fun! Really glad you're liking them, so far!

Because of how the rights issues worked, the Maximov Twins were able to appear in both the X-Men (20th Century Fox) and Avengers films (Marvel Studios, which during the production of Age of Ultron was purchased by Disney - the reason Ultron could sing 'I've Got No Strings on Me'). The comic name Quicksilver was used in the X-Men films (where he was called Peter instead of Pietro) and you never really saw Wando in those films. In the MCU films the comic names for the Twins were not used at all until much later when Wanda earns the mantle Scarlet Witch. (Other characters even make a joke of sorts around the fact she has no alter ego name.) Like several other reactors I have followed through their MCU journey, you have mistaken The Vision (an entirely new AI character) with J.A.R.V.I.S. For all intents and purposes, J.A.R.V.I.S. no longer exists in the MCU. His programming was incorporated into what was supposed to be Ultron's final form along with psychological elements of Ultron, Tony Stark, and Bruce Banner. The Vision is an entirely separate character and is referred to as such moving forward. You may note - however - that Tony's new AI assistant uses a female voice and is called F.R.I.D.A.Y. - a play on the 1940 film "His Gal Friday."
My main beef with this movie is that it's just wrong. You won't get an extinction level event from something pulled by earths gravity. Objects travelling at that speed is pulled by the sun
Shanelle: "Fighting demons, everyone in this movie". The comic book genre, specifically Marvel, is built on the classic Greek literature concept of "the flawed hero". The hero not only has to overcome the bad guy, but also his or her self.
The actor voicing Ultron, James Spader, played Doctor Daniel Jackson in the first Stargate movie. If you haven't seen that, it's a great movie that spun off 3 series and 2 TV movies.
When I saw this I went to a marathon. It showed all of phase 1 and then all of phase 2. Movie time was like 26 hrs. It was a very long day but so worth it.
Caps fear isn't loosing Peggy. She says they can go home and asks him to imagine it and then the room is empty. Before that Ultron had said to him "pretending you can live without a war". That's what Cap fears, he can't find a life for himself outside the fight.

@@spencernaugle As said, Hulk and Bruce share a lot, different personalities but not completely seperated, so the conditioning is done more on Bruce's side.
Except a correction to that is:
The Hulk is many separate personalities not just 1.
@@JamailvanWesteringThat might be a comics thing. But it’s never been said in the MCU, and there’s no evidence for it.
For the record, the infighting in The Avengers, wasn't JUST because of the scepter. The feelings they had that they fought about were real things they felt/thought. The scepter intensified them all bringing it all out.
2:37
Like any well-written story, it's more complicated than 1 simple reason.
The avengers personalities already were in conflict, and the scepter was tapping into that conflict and making it worse.
I did not appreciate this one when it came out, but it has definitely grown on me over the years. So many great moments.
I don't care what nobody says I absolutely love this movie to the fullest❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was only disappointed the first time I watched the movie. But it has aged like fine wine.
It aged very well. Seeing so many pieces come into play for the next major movies makes it more rewarding.
I saw it for the first time a few months ago and I really enjoyed it, it's such an underrated gem and honestly one of my favourite MCU films so far
James Spader has always had a great speaking voice IMO. I love him in his tv show the blacklist
Ultron is basically personification of Tony's ptsd.
And narcissism.
Ultron is James Spader. You might recognize him from The Blacklist or when he was younger in a bunch of 80s moves like Pretty in Pink or later in Stargate the movie
I only knew him from Secretary and The Office😭
@TheHeroClass they did a re dub of age of ultron with Robert California lines from the office, it's worth a watch
Do not forget that James Spader was in Less Than Zero (1987) with RDJ.
Zero is a dark movie.
Don't for get Boston Legal!
Thanks again for watching all of these. I Love your Marvel reactions. This is actually my favorite of all the Marvel movies! I like the dialogue, the direction, & the attention to the civilian bystanders.
Oh, the heartbreak yet to come.
We are almost in the 3rd Act of The Infinity Saga! And the first movie of Phase 3 makes Age of Ultron even better by consequence.
But first... Paul Rudd!
35:49 I very recently realized that Thor has had NO ONE in his life to actively compare how one holds Mjoilnir to Thors fighting style 😢 So when Vision comes up n is basically like “Yo, youre’ weapon is Kiiiinda Op” Thor stays the HH(HumbleHimbo) he is 😂❤”Naw its just Practical in Comabt, ya know?” 🤣🤣🤷🏽🫶
It is not a coincidence that Whedon is the one they use for the avengers movies. Very few directors and writers can do ensamble like he can. Buffy. Firefly. Avengers.
Imagine if Hulk swung Thor like a hammer while Thor was swinging Mjollnir. Double whammy.
I can see Raymond Reddington in Ultron's facial expressions every now and then. It definitely makes him better than a fully CGI faceless robot.
There are several bts pictures of Ruffalo and Spader in full mo cap spandex having a blast 😊
I understand we get tired of the things we do every time, but I like your intro. Very clear knowing you stand as the BFF and resident movie watching pal. Gets me right away to know exactly what I'm getting into with your reactions.
I was so happy seeing Linda C as Clint’s wife. Yes she is a shield agent and I do hope they bring more of her history into play
The rest of phase 3 pretty much hinges off this movie.
That’s just her “lullaby” for him. The sun’s getting real low is like a trigger phrase for him to calm down and return to being Bruce Banner
You're right Shanelle. That was really emotional. Us comic book nerds had been waiting for Cap to say the line...
For _Buffy_ fans, this movie is essentially _I Robot-You Jane_ with a budget.
Bwahahaha!
I would also add that Wanda pulling out Utron’s heart mimics Buffy pulling out Adam’s power source.
@@phillipray4380 My reaction to the research centre collapse at the start of _Avengers_ was “Holy Sunnydale!”
@@donsample1002 😂
“A thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts.” -Vision
The single best line in the entire MCU.
The boy twin, aka Quicksilver played Kick-Ass and one of his buddies in that film played Quicksilver in the X-Men franchise.
HUGE collective gasp from the audience when Cap nudged the Hammer, but when Vision handed it to Thor.... the audience errupted and cheered!
If you think about the movies from the 80's, Spader kind of IS a dark Downey Jr.
This is one of my favourites not a wasted frame in the whole movie and one of the best villains and best villain performances from spader
No one dies permanently in the comics. But MCU movies usually kill the villain, and Whedon likes to kill someone good while they’re at it.
Who was it? Joss Whedon, George Martin and JJ Abrams who like to kill characters?
Whedon's normal habits tend to weaken this film in my view. And he shouldn't have done that to Wash.
A lot of great things happened in this movie that really moved the overall story forward. Terrific to see the updated lineup for the Avengers!
James Spader was a perfect choice to do the voice of Ultron.
Natasha tells Bruce to not turn green because he's on top of her. She doesn't wanna get crushed.
"I'm so bored of my intro, you guys."
Fun fact: the piano player on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was an unbelievably talented jazz pianist named Johnny Costa, who initially resisted Fred Rogers' offer to be the musical director for the show, as he felt it would get old really quick.
23:46 Reminds me of Gunslinger Girl. Henrietta's story is way more heartbreaking.
-Thor's vision was just like Tony's at the beginning where he saw his world's destruction and everyone he loved dead
-Cap's vision was taunting him by showing him the life he never got to have had he returned from the war instead of going in the ice
As far as some background on the twins....
Tony joking about "Prima nocta" is in really poor taste.
Agreed, well said.
You do realize Cap knew he could lift it, he chose not to. Its all in the script
Loved Clint in this movie. He really came into his own
Cap is easily my favorite, Steve is the leader of the Avengers, but since RDJ (and Jon) are the reasons the MCU became as big as it did Tony is always in a big spotlight.
I'm loving these MCU reactions Shanelle. Thankfully there's still a tonne of them left to enjoy.
38:49
Couple of things that may explain it:
Bruce probably was tired of always turning into the hulk, especially against his will.
19:15 Reminder that Agent Carter exists as a show.
"Sun's gettin' real low" is basically a safe word they came up with I think
Excelsior. That was Stan’s sign off word When he was the editor of Marvel comics and he had a column every month, we talked about the latest stuff he would sign off with that word we all loved him for that so him saying it here is super Duper fan service
MCU kicks into epic mode with Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame
When my brother let me read his Marvel comic book collection in the 1970s The Avengers was my favorite title and Vision (Jarvis-in-human-form in the MCU) was my favorite character. So this film became one of my favorites instantly. I really like the way Vision's gentle, thoughtful, kind, nature was captured in the MCU.
I love how everybody has heard of Wakanda. Even people who haven't watched the MCU.
She kinda looks like an older version of Logan's daughter in the movie
I hope she watched the X-Men movies and the Logan movie when it happens because we we want her to watch Deadpool and Wolverine when it comes out in streaming

And even more fitting, in Archie Comics Betty is the nice one, Veronica's the meaner one
@@The_RedVIII That's exactly it, though. Veronica is the opposite of Betty in archie comics, just like veronica is designed to take down hulk, where Betty is his girlfriend

15:42 see, a throwaway line in phase 2, comes back and becomes poignant later on, that's why MCU is so awesome.
20:14 Also known as Hulkbuster!
29:09 is this some kind of Civil war?
43:08 You Haven't heard of "Vision"?

Paul Bettany was the voice of Jarvis until Ultron. Now he plays Vision. He is also married to Jennifer Connelly
Some time after watching this, I starting watching The Black List, and I cannot unhear Ultron.
(Other characters even make a joke of sorts around the fact she has no alter ego name.)
Like several other reactors I have followed through their MCU journey, you have mistaken The Vision (an entirely new AI character) with J.A.R.V.I.S.
I thought it was great! That last scene of the whole group taking on the robots.😳🔥💥💀
Yes! I've been waiting for this one! This might be my favorite Avengers movie. It’s definitely the one I think I’ve watched the most 🙂
