    Alex is really right about the movie being an extremely ballsy move by the Marvel execs. I remember before this movie came out in theaters, I thought, "Well, this'll be the first bomb. There's no way I'm going to like a movie with a talking racoon and tree." Walked out of the movie admitting I was wrong. They did SUCH a good job with Guardians.

      Actually, it wasn't a flop - it made a good profit in the theaters. It was just mocked a lot :-).

    • @DaveJonesVideo
      @DaveJonesVideo 2 года назад +3

      @@bvanb2011 according to Wikipedia, it cost somewhere between $30 - $37 million to produce. It then grossed US$16,295,774 in the United States and US$21,667,000 worldwide for a total of US$37,962,774. Costing $30-$37 million, and grossing $38 million at the box office is not a "good profit". The film makers don't get the gross amount, just a portion of it. So it lost a good amount of money for the studio. It made additional money later from VHS and TV, but it was considered a financial failure at the box office, as well as a critical failure (film critics hated it). It became a cult classic, but that's a separate thing, and happens after those other things are judged.

    Welcome to the cosmic side of the MCU, Marvel took a huge gamble with James Gunn's bottom of the barrel hero choice. While I knew of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2010, a big majority had no idea who they were. James Gunn brought the GotG to the top, he was given free control of everything. The studio did ask him to put in Thanos, but that's all the meddling they did. Now, onto Age of Ultron.

      I watched this first when my Mom was in her last weeks with cancer. It absolutely eviscerated me. I had to walk away and come back (I'd missed in theaters, so I was lucky to have friends who patiently waited and let me collect myself. I still associate this movie with those times. I waited to show it to my Dad (who was catching up on Marvel too) because I knew he needed time. They were high school sweethearts and was right by her side until the end. I missed being there by less than ten minutes. I'm really glad the movie doesn't dwell on that aspect too much, otherwise I'd never be able to rewatch it.
      I also love his reticence to open that last present to him. I still have cards (ones we found after her death) and even a few presents she had misplaced, that I haven't opened. They're some of the last "new" things from her I'll ever experience. Once they're gone, all I have is memories, nothing new ever again. It's another note of finality in a very final situation and confronting that is really hard.

    A couple fun tidbits about this movie: 1. In the scene with The Collector, Chris Pratt accidentally dropped the orb but they decided to use that shot cuz it was funny. 2. James Gunn hid secret messages within all the location text in this movie and it has yet to be completely solved (Gunn confirmed New Rockstars decoded about 3/4 of it). 3. Drax (the character with the dead wife and daughter) is played by former WWE wrestler Batista, Gamora (the green girl) is played by Zoe Saldana who was well known for being the alien girl from Avatar so there’s a bit of a theme going on there 😅 Rocket is voiced by Bradley Cooper and nonhumans not knowing that he’s a raccoon and his obsession with prosthetics are running gags so look out for them. Finally, Groot was voiced by Vin Diesel, which is just funny in and of itself

Cosmo the dog was part of the Guardians in the books, and the Duck is named Howard. He also has his own books, which are patently weird, and his own movie which is cheesy as all heck and profoundly strange, but really is a good time.

    Michael Rooker who plays Yondu has been in pretty much every James Gunn movie, there is joke that Gunn just makes movies to give Rooker work. The end credit scene was just more Gaurdians content. The dog Cosmo is part of one of the Gaurdians teams in the comics. And also Howard the Duck is one of Marvel's comic characters.

    The final post-credit scene features Howard the Duck, an obscure Marvel character from the 1970s who has a cult following. In the mid-80s, there was an historically awful Howard the Duck movie, so this is a re-introduction to the character and a seriously deep cut easter egg.

    34:20 - Earlier, the father guy said he has a wife and daughter who are alive because of the Guardians; I think they're actually showing us the wife and daughter to show more of that happy ending; no real significance beyond that
    34:55 - The Groot dancing tree was actually the director James Gunn dancing and they modelled the dancing off him - he actually performed the dance... so fun :)
    35:35 - That's Howard the Duck from the comics.... they added him in for the comic fans I think

    The duck at the end was Howard The Duck. The very first live-action film by Marvel was about him, way back in the 80s. The dog is named Cosmo. He, along with Howard, are old Marvel comics characters.
    Also, the significance of the pink lady and child are that there was a brief scene of them being saved by Peter flying by in his ship, shooting the enemy ship that was targeting the 2 civilians. The husband even mentioned to Peter that he owed him for saving his family.

    Don’t get confused going forward, THIS Groot did die. The baby that is growing back is his son, it’s not the same Groot and a lot of people doesn’t even know that. This Groot was Rocket best friend but the new one is like his adoptive son.
    ‘Spoiler alert for Infinity War if you haven’t seen it yet!’
    The directors even confirmed that when teenage Groot was dying he said ‘dad’ to Rocket.
    32:35 Those are the pink aliens that Rocket saved on the bridge and that’s why he told the Guardians of the Galaxy “You saved my family”, there’s a lot of details that gets overlooked in this movie.

    • @reynaldolorenzo8409
      @reynaldolorenzo8409 2 года назад +1

      @Latest Obsession He doesn’t have the same memories, James Gunn confirmed both arguments that fans had back then. The first one being that baby/teen Groot is a different Groot and that he doesn’t have the same memories. The MCU a lot of the times doesn’t follow the comics and with Groot they change it, so they are two completely different characters.

But ‘Winter Soldier’ also refers to Vietnam-era hearings where the soldiers who testified did so as Patriots who stay loyal to the Flag & Constitution not just when it’s easy, but also when it’s hard. In that light, Cap himself is the Winter Soldier. I love that.
