I don't want to be "that guy", but gold isn't a platinum group element: the platinum group consists of platinum, palladium, osmium, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium. However, gold is a coinage metal, along with copper and silver. One distinguishing feature between the true platinum group elements and gold is that the platinum group catalyzes the hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and nitrogen (as in the Haber-Bosch process) at around 200 degrees Celsius, while gold does not. Interestingly, the row 1 transition metal analogues of the platinum group, iron, cobalt, and nickel also serve as good hydrogenation catalysts (nickel and iron for ammonia generation, and cobalt for forming formaldehyde), but the row 1 gold analogue, copper, is useless in this regard.

***** Great! But there is cupellation, impure silver is melted with lead in a shallow dish made of bone ash, called a cupel. A stream of air is blown across the molten mixture, causing the lead and all the base metals alloyed with the silver to oxidize, whereupon they are either absorbed by the cupel or blown away. Pure silver is left behind. That would work?
You really only need a prospecting license. In Canada, you can pan and mine on crown land. I know that in the US most land is owned so you will either need permission or ownership of the land.
+Spark1383 He has some abandoned mines on his fathers property where he lives atm :) He tells you that the ore is what his father and his uncle got out of the mine once.
7:47 Question: When you have the zinc, with a mix of silver. Can't you separate the two metals without using acids? Instead simply use temperature to separate both out. For example: Would the idea of bringing the temperature up over 961 C thus making both metals liquid. Followed by lowering the temperature to something over 419C so that only the silver stays liquid and the zinc becomes solid and drops to the bottom or rises to the top? (Since the zinc has a melting point of 419 C & Silver has a melting point of 961 C.) Someone please educate me on what would happen
Didn't he say that silver is "soluble" in zinc? I'm no expert, but I imagine it is like salt in water. When salt enters water it doesn't really "melt" so it also wouldn't become a solid again before the water it is dissolved in. But salt is an ionic compound and water tears those apart because it can both attract the negative and the positive ions. Why exactly metals dissolve each other / form alloys I do not know.

well good for you. I hope y'all are happy together.
+Cody'sLab CONGRATULATIONS!!! You both seem so perfect for each other. To find a woman that will share your interests, or at the very least pretend to enjoy your hobbies, is a very lucky thing. Are you guys still engaged?
+Cody'sLab did she say no?
Soyy Sauce she said "bletch"
This guy is like a frickin cowboy from the wild west.
Killer video only one I've ever seen where someone takes raw material from the earth and turns it into refined jewelry. HATS OFF TO YOU!
I am 14 and I just like watching cody's videos.
They are so interesting
Good job cody!!!!!
Actually it's quite relevant, you just have to consider the average attention span of a 14 year old.
she's a gold digger xD
+Joe Wilson i fell out of my chair
Shiny Ditto ...k
lol I fell off my couch!
I fell...
my god people stop falling!
This entire video is so interesting! I had no idea how much work goes into mining and extracting different metals. Beautiful ring by the end, fantastic job.
You look like Shaggy from scoobydoo
Captain Capellini not as hungry all the time tho
Kinda does with the hair but he's not a stoner. Trying not to be rude.
Captain Capellini LMAOO
Split up, gang
That's a lot of work but you sure accomplished what you set out to do. Good job!
Such a cool story and a thoughtful gift for your sweetie! Well done!
This guy is a true genius, I would pay money to spend the week with him
Lol do you just keep a bucket of acid lying around?
+Gent Malushaga
Yes, doesn't everyone?
+Cody'sLab How did you get your own mine
+Gent Malushaga he dug a hole
+Gent Malushaga It's often used in various dilutions to clean rocks, pavement, ceramic tile, and anywhere that something's been stained. Many stores like Canadian Tire (HomeAuto Improvement stores) sell by the gallon.
+Gent Malushaga Muriatic acid, HCl (the same acid that is in your stomach), can be purchased in most hardware stores
If this is how much work it takes to make a single ring. I can see why the cost a limb. Good thing both of you didn't lose any limbs through this awesome process :D
why do you need a metal can thing to roast ore? you can just insult it many times
Who else thought he was gonna make a rock ring?... Or is it just me?!?
this raw american ethic at its purest. if u need/want something do it urself. my son & i really enjoy ur videos man thank u very much. plus its something educational that keeps him off of the xbox lol.
By controlling the temperature you could melt the lead and not the silver? Lead should melt at half the temperature of silver.
***** Great, thank you!
+BBBDubb He's annoying by being smarter than you? Go troll somewhere else. It was actually an insightful post.
+Ken Andrews TURN DOWN FOR WHAT! XD
Diegogoogle60 What the hell are you on about?
My left ear enjoyed this video
Civilisation will never truly collapse as long as people like Cody hold this vital knowledge.
Stardew Valley real life
Irk dude
+hervvehh ye :D
lollllll
I guess you all agree :D
Wait I'm new here you own mines? How did you come across ownership? Passed on my family? What's the approximated worth? That sounds awesome
Abandoned ones are cheap, so are mineral rights
+Derek Cook thanks :)
+Derek Cook I really had no idea, that's interesting.
Don't give up Cody, I think it's amazing you have your own mine and can play around like that. Blast some more and see what happens. You never know!
7:47 Question: When you have the zinc, with a mix of silver.
Can't you separate the two metals without using acids?
Instead simply use temperature to separate both out.
For example:
Would the idea of bringing the temperature up over 961 C thus making both metals liquid.
Followed by lowering the temperature to something over 419C so that only the silver stays liquid and the zinc becomes solid and drops to the bottom or rises to the top?
(Since the zinc has a melting point of 419 C & Silver has a melting point of 961 C.)
Someone please educate me on what would happen
Didn't he say that silver is "soluble" in zinc? I'm no expert, but I imagine it is like salt in water. When salt enters water it doesn't really "melt" so it also wouldn't become a solid again before the water it is dissolved in. But salt is an ionic compound and water tears those apart because it can both attract the negative and the positive ions. Why exactly metals dissolve each other / form alloys I do not know.
Zinc has a boiling point of 907 so if you heat both metals up to 961 C the Zinc would evaporate and you will be left with the Silver.
Richard Fry a
Look up Eutectic system in Wikipedia.
@@moemara Boiling it out would take a long time. You could use a assay furnace and a bone cupel to get rid of the zinc.
I subscribed when he said he was mining silver from his mine...
Cody; you are liveing the life. That silver/lead mine with the ladder, looks like it must be a lot of interesting times.I admire your life style: or what I've seen of it.keep being you
What mod are you using for Skyrim?
