I myself am a soon to be licensed machinest and the number one thing we're taught in school and on the workplace is to never wear gloves while operating any machinery that rotates, this video made my anxiety spike 😬
I thought it might be Windex too! Did you do that for lubrication, or to keep the dust contained? I've heard cutting carbon fiber can be quite hazardous.
came here from your comment on diresta's video. I am very very impressed! Wish you the best. I bet that in a year from now you will have thousands of subscribers!
Awesome video! That ring is awesome! In about to turn carbon fiber for the first time. Any tips? And what products do you use for the finishing process? What oil and polishing compound? And do you seal any of your rings? Of so what do you use. My rings finish keep chipping.
Be very careful with any composite materials, especially carbon fiber. The fibers them selves can be very toxic if finely ground or burned when inhaled. At crash sites teams spray everything down with wax to keep anyone from breathing it.
Hi, I really liked the ring, you could tell me please on what page I can buy that carbon fiber blade, I can not find it and I would like the exact greetings
A great video, keep them coming! And even the comments are pretty good. :) That ring has turned out very nicely; I had wondered whether the copper discs would mate flat with their neighbouring pieces but it seems to have turned out fine. Do you think the copper is sort of squidged in while you're grinding everything flat? It's certainly great to see how you're doing it!
Hi, Idont know what are you using for driling, but it squeeze to much, for you need to use oil-water emulssion, for aluminium -alcohol, water for stone
You are not using the correct anular cutter in your drilling machine. This type of cutter is designed to cut stone, bricks and concrete. It cuts by abrasion, not by creating real chips. Because of this, it will not cut softer materials like metals or carbon fiber that require a tool capable of cutting, not abrasing. That's why it cuts so slow and generates a ton of smoke...because it is not actually cutting the carbon fiber but burning it. It's not a matter of using more coolant. Rplace it by a proper anular cutter and you'll improve your results (and times) a 100%
Could you tell, where did you get this graded type of jaw chuck extension? I'm looking for something like that for quite some time with no result. Did you make it yourself?
Do not breathe in carbon fibre dust.....it's as toxic as glass fibre dust in certain amounts if not more so. Always wear proper face masks with either stuff or your in for a shit time later on in life Keeping the workpiece under some form of liquid spray is definitely a good thing in more than one way
@ Patrick Adair Desings ...and anyone else who's interested: In order to help preserve your diamond-dipped hole saws when cutting marble, simply form a ring of plastercine, or clay, or blue tac, or even bread dough (flour and water), around the area you want to cut out, and fill it with water or oil. Once you've cut the smaller hole, the water or oil will still drain away slowly (quite slowly if you use thicker oil), but you can continuously top it up as you go. That way, you can keep more of the cutting edge covered and cool. :)
Very nice ring. To avoid breakout, I start w/drilling a small pilot hole for alignment, score one side w/both hole saws a few mm deep, then flip over and drill through. Any rough spot from breakthrough is a small line inside. Also, if there are any small gaps or voids I use epoxy. Cyanoacrylate adhesives are only effective where materials are in contact.
Thank you Very much for sharing your work with us -- this IS, by definition, true and actual Craftsmanship! Q: That stepped expansion mandrel you're holding in the chuck... where did you get that? or, did you make it? That's a nice piece of tooling all by itself. Would love to know where I can get one.
you're killin me with the gloves dude. Look up what happens when the lathe gets a hold of one... also what glue do you use for wood to metal applications, can't find one that holds well.
Hi, I really liked the ring, you could tell me please on what page I can buy that carbon fiber blade, I can not find it and I would like the exact greetings
If you were to start the project again what would you have done to ensure a snug seal between all the different materials. I noticed that there isn't a great seal between the copper and other two materials. Would you put them in a vice to make them perfectly flat?
so I have no experience with this at all but I've got a question. it looks like Windex was used to cut the ring on the press, do you have to use Windex or can you use antifreeze in the spray bottle?
can you sell that we can have a great deal or do you have any link that sells this type of rings because this rings are much better than gold or silver I know you are a specialist in this
Got an email about a nostalgic video, a follow up to bunch of other interesting emails after I bought 2 carbon fiber rings (all I could afford ;) ). What do you do? What should I do? The author was really frank about why this video was so special for him. At least that's what I wanted to believe at the moment. And I see why you mentioned nostalgia. It really is nostalgic. Those worn tools, garage, DIY action and progression really are making you feel warm inside, as a fellow tinkerer. Great ring, imperfections make it really unique, one-of-a-kind :). I know people prefer perfect things for themselves but when you do something yourself for yourself you really appreciate those imperfections (at least I do). Thanks for great content and great rings Patrick and the crew. P.S. Would love to see a video depicting a making of an amber + carbon fiber ring (externally two carbon fiber pieces L shaped to accommodate an amber inside, T shaped - the vertical T part to make it transparent in the middle, to show any interesting cracks and dust-size particles stuck in it; or amber outside and carbon fiber inside) . Ba, if I could afford it I would buy it (but probably couldn't, haha). But those materials would be difficult because both can easily overheat and burn :=.
Hello Mr Adair, or should I call you..... Celebrimbor :-0 Man I'd just discovered your work with this video and I've watched some more, taking a look on your store and I'm so fucking stuned. Seriously this is soooooo beautiful, gracefull and elegant. The way you work those refined materials, I see so much attention and passion. This kind of taste... this is genious !!! I feel like I fell in love with an object as pure piece of art.... incredible ':-0 Really, bravo, congratulation, magnifique ! From France ("omellette du fromage" as some people says). But I have a question ; why does this ring is not on your online store ? And I saw some other rings from your videos that are not on your store two. I think you should propose them. Big love for your work once again, take care
Put it on your store anyway ! "Reasonable price" it's just a matter of point of view. The price must show the materials you use and the times it takes for. As far as people know what it takes and how many time is needed, the price is the price, but let the people decide to buy it or not. Perhaps you wont sell many of them but it worth it. Anyway I think it should be all your creations on your store, from the easiest / sheaper to the most sophisticated and coslty ones. So the people would have a wild range of rings to chose, accordingly to their taste and means. Unleashe your power dude ! Don't restrain your talent, people will follow I promess
Hey, I think i have a brand name for this one : The King's Ring :-P Well I can't wait to see it on your shop ! I'd just checked rigth now, still nothing ! Arrrrg X-P
That's fine, but that dust will find its way to very hard to reach places. You can minimize that problem by putting some wet paper towels on your ways. Don't use cloth rags, they can be caught by the lathe and create a big problem. The paper towels will catch a lot of that nasty dust, the moisture will prevent the dust flying off when removing the paper towels. Your lathe will last longer using this technique. BTW nice job on those rings.
you did a great job but to me I have to think is it worth it it seems the time and the money for parts is more in cost then just buying one from china for $0.50 shipped and the ones they have look perfect no small scratches or anything.
understand 100% and its not so much are dependence on other countries its more are dependence on a government that is not protecting us back when the government allowed us to use free trade and we hade coins made of silver and gold a international currency and we could trade homemade things without haveign to pay tax on it the us was stronger and better what also hurt us was when they government started looking for mass production and to got rid of everything being hand made. even if we stop buying from other countries we will just make things in bulk buy using robots and computers will little effort instead of like the old days wear it was sweat and tears that went into making things. If I could work a normal job and make money bassed on the work I did I would be able to afford thing but instead I am forced to work for a set amount of pay and have to give 25% to the government for tax and other fees that makes people poor. I think its wrong that for instance a person who works their ass off gets paid the same as a person who sit around doing nothing when it should not be it should be bassed on how good you do the job
I person should be paid buy how good they do a job and how hard of a worker they are. I have seen it more then once wear a person has worked for a place like me I have dun it worked for a place for 7 years working my way to a higher wage only to have a person come in and do my job when on my days off and get paid 2 times my pay and they wear a new higher and then on top of that do to no training do the job badly and then 6 months later get a 50 cent rase yet I get 15 cents because the rase is bassed on what you are currently getting paid. The only thing I could do the boss sed was to quit and let him rehire me so I did part of that I quit and then told him take the rest of the food I need to cook that day and shuv it up is fucking ass. its bull shit.
Patrick Adair Designs sure, but i didn't hear you mention using one. Or if you did i just weren't paying enough attention. :| Won't the patina wear off?
+Patrick Adair Designs Pretty sure I just saw that lathe on Harbor Frieght. 7x10 mini right? I'll have to download Instagram in the a.m. Thanks brother. From one ring craftsman to another, you do nice work!

That's a very clever idea, using one power tool in line with another one, thus doubling the speeds.
Can you comment on the brand/make of that expanding mandrel? Thanks!
hello, congratulations for the good work.
I wanted to ask where to buy tool to hold ring on a lathe.
thank you
how can I buy this ring?
Subscribed but holy shit dude, get a respirator!
I have access to a local workshop with a lathe.... this is tempting...
Hey man awesome .. what i s that tool you used to hold the carbon ring on the lathe, can you tell me please ?
Hi, I really liked the ring, you could tell me please on what page I can buy that carbon fiber blade, I can not find it and I would like the exact greetings
I really want to get into this with my lathe but I can't find the expanding chuck you use to hold the ring. Where could I find something like that?

hi, where did you buy the expandeble lathe chuck.
Yeah I'd love to get one of those chucks!
I wanted to ask the same
It comes with lathe machines and amazon has a whole bunch to fit your exact size ;) this one I believe is a 3" chuck.

Hi, can you change the copper with silver?
Awesome work. Just one question. How does it call the "thing" which you use to hold the ring during grinding on lethe?
Thanks, that's the jig I was looking for. Have a small tube to face and chamfer both ends.
Question! If we had specific material we wanted turned into a ring, can you make that happen? I truly appreciate your craftsmanship
What did you use to seal the copper and prevent oxidation?
***** alright thats fair, and theres no contact between skin and copper so theres no skin discoloration so its perfect. Great video, i love your work!
