    Huh. You've mentioned it before but I didn't quite get what you were talking about. That "flashing over" or whatever you called it is a quite interesting effect. I'm guessing it's caused by the energy released in the phase change?

      it actually would be fun to see if he could get iron out of things that contain dietary iron, like for example apples (they turn brown cause of iron oxidizing, so I'd imagine he could get the iron out of it.

      @Snow Storm This is incorrect. Apples brown from catechol being oxideized by an enzyme catechol oxidase to form o-quinone, which then polymerizes to make melanin (the pigment found in skin)

    • @guythepirate
      @guythepirate 8 лет назад +8

      For a change of state to occur there is an amount of energy either absorbed or released at the moment of state change, (why evaporation of water cools you down effectively ). When a liquid changes state to a solid, it releases a set amount of energy, called the specific heat of fusion, or when a changes state to a gas; the specific heat of evaporation. The flash was caused by the heat generated but the change of state, from a liquid to a solid.
      This is different to the specific heat capacity, which is general thermal energy stored in a non-state changing process. =)

    Hello Cody. I was wondering if you knew of a way to strip nickel off of a brass key. I was wondering because I work at a hardware store and all of the keys we make that don't work just get thrown away. If possible could you make a video about that or maybe have a link to an article on it. I inquire because for me it would be an easy way to get brass for my furnace and I'm having a hard time finding any papers about it.

    Hey Cody, why does the gold appear to flash as it solidifies?

    • @theCodyReeder
      @theCodyReeder  8 лет назад +19

      same reason that it is rather warm during a snow storm. the bead was super cooled (much colder than the melting point) and then it released heat as it solidified, this raised the temperature back up to the melting point for a short time.

      Well to be honest I have slightly ideas whats going on based from what I've seen from my chem lessons (for ex like these acids dissolving metals or electrolysis or how he is able to do these things without gold making strange bonds because it is a noble metal
      etc) but never seen these things in real life only on papers so its very interesting and informative.

    In my fifth grade science class we learned about the amount of iron in our blood, and in a lot of our foods. The teacher held up a magnet to a bag of cereal that was crushed and we were able to watch the iron get pulled towards the magnet. I am still impressed by how much iron is in our food. Is there any way you could extract this iron and melt it down into an ingot or something? I think that would be a pretty neat episode.
