      I was immediately suspicious when it said "Laboratory Report" but didn't have the name of a specific laboratory. The report # is probably identical for each pack -- a quick way to spot fakes.
      Edit: Just looked up some online and both the cheap ones and the $80 ones have photos showing the same report #. Makes me wonder if there was ever a legitimate product with this design.

    nice video, and you exposed a fake company in the process. I hope someone uses your video to take action against that company if possible. its not right for them to be allowed to trick people into buying that crap even if it was cheap, they still think its real gold.

    • @Newt2799
      @Newt2799 6 лет назад +8

      They might be able to get away with it if there's an amount of gold in the cards so small it's basically undetectable, which I suspect they may have done.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 6 лет назад +11

      Moreover, quite possibly an outright counterfeit. In this case, the name of the company printed on the cards is irrelevant since that company had nothing to do with it, and honestly they're just as upset if not more so about someone selling counterfeits of their products as we are about buying them.
      Unfortunately, there's a pretty big problem with counterfeiting these sorts of products, especially if they're sold online, and yes, a lot of it is coming from China.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 6 лет назад +10

      NewtSniper Contains at least 1 atom of 24 karot gold!
      Which is probably true about every card deck ever made. If you consider that a deck of cards would have 10^21 to 10^22 atoms in it, well, that's a LOT of digits. I can't conceive of that amount of material not containing some small number of stray gold atoms as "impurities". Even what's almost certainly the most pure material known to mankind, chip grade silicon, is only pure out to 12 nines or so, meaning you have 10 digits left to work with, so if those impurities contain at least 1 part in 10 billion being gold, you would expect a deck of cards sized piece of chip grade silicon to contain at least one atom of gold.

I know that it's a common tactic in the more unscrupulous sects of the leather industry to use a patch of real leather that says that it's real leather as the tag on an artificial leather jacket so that customers think the tag is referring to the whole jacket rather than just the tag itself, and something similar could've occurred here?

      kurtu5 Actually, there'd have to be actual gold foil, since that's what the certificate says. It could be an incredibly small piece, but it would have to be gold foil or leaf, not just gold in general.

    • @kurtu5
      @kurtu5 6 лет назад +6

      Not sure what the lower bound "metal leaf' has before it ceases to be 'metal leaf'. Perhaps to be considered leaf, it must first be beaten as a manufacturing step, which would distinguish it from plating. If you split it down such that you only had one atom, is it then leaf?
      More likely there is a speck of leaf with quadrillions of atoms somewhere in the certificate. The cost to precisely place only one atom would be incredibly high.

    If they wanted to make gold plated cards that you could actually play a game with more than once without destroying them, the gold layer would certainly have to be beneath something.
    If I had to guess, I'd assume they're using something like PETE, which is the type of plastic soft drink bottles are made of. One of its propertities (which is probably very relevant to being food safe, actually) is that it's pretty innert and most common organic solvents (such as your paint thinner) won't touch it. Even with solvents that DO work (DCM seems to be a common recommendation. More specifically to PET family plastics, phenols, as well as DMSO and nitrobenzene), you will probably have to heat it up close to the solvent's boiling point and then wait a few hours.

    • @raykent3211
      @raykent3211 6 лет назад

      Keldor314 thanks for that. It probably explains why I met with disaster trying to get the coating off a beer can. The solvents and paint stripper I tried had no effect. I tried burning it off with an ordinary butane/propane torch and the aluminium melted. Looks like I'll need to spend hours with fine emery.

    Hey Cody,
    I have watched this video like a hundred thousand times and I got to thinking..... Would you be interesting in revisiting the playing cards? The cheap ones of course and see if you can render the cards down and identify the metal they are made of... Perhaps if you could get the "plating" off of all of them and try to furnace it down to burn off the combustibles like the coating and such and see if you get some type of metal in the end? I miss these videos, I think it would be cool to see how to render all metals from ore. I live on a mountain and have a lot of rock to identify around the property.... You know what I think would also be neat, make a bar of fools gold, since the stuff turns to ash it would be a challenge I think.... Good excuse to make more crucibles and cupules. I don't know, like I said I miss the refining videos. If you could maybe use some tactics from Grants old videos and also make a sustainable forge for those of us that can't but they better stuff.

I posted the results in my reviews of those products and on a few other sites that sell the products and a year later have found those products are no longer available from those sites and in some cases the store no longer sells products from that manufacturer.

    The only solid gold cards I know of are from Mitsubishi Materials. They produced several sets of Hello Kitty themed card decks for the 33rd anniversary of Hello Kitty which were made of fine gold rolled several microns thick then covered in plastic. They also produce printed fine gold business cards, which are made of paper roll-coated in one gram of fine gold.

    Cody, huge fan. You inspired me to start keeping bees this season, and I love your videos about refining -- mainly for the chemistry. I would love to see some videos about how to produce basic chemical reactants from natural or readily available materials. For example, making your own nitric acid, or recovering elemental sulphur from ore, or the iodine from sea kelp. Thanks for the videos!

    It might just be all about the wording that is on that guarantee. It might be that the gold that is on it is 24k gold but it doesn't necessarily mean that the entire card is gold plated. what I mean by that is if you look at the crowns on the face cards they are a slightly different colour from the rest of the cards front and backs. I would check those crowns and see if they might be the only gold plated parts on those cards. Ideally thought I would recommend turning the cards to ash, and then treating the ash with a solution of AR and then testing that solution with stannous chloride to see if any precious metals are present. Or if you want to use your XRF just test the ashes prior to treating with AR.

    • @KhronicD
      @KhronicD 6 лет назад +2

      As the cards are plastic, I imagine it would be rather messy trying to turn them to ash

      The x-ray would have detected it if there was any gold on _any_ of the cards.

    • @CoinSilver800
      @CoinSilver800 6 лет назад

      Incorrect, XRF's only detect what is on the surface or extremely minutely below the surface, also I mentioned to test the crown of the face cards as the only cards that was tested was the 6 of clubs. to test the entirety of a sample you would need to use another method like fire assay or ICP

    • @tehKap0w

      Cody'sLab But if the reaction is between the sodium hydroxide and iodine then it would make sense to let that happen before adding the hydrochloric acid which will consume all the sodium hydroxide.

    Iodine exists as a non polar molecule due to the fact that it has has two identical iodine atom with same electronegativity. Therefore it sparingly dissolve in polar solvents such as water and readily dissolve in non polar solvents. In order to have a reasonable concentration of iodine in solution you would therefore have to had in iodide ions which forms complexs such as triiodide and other polyiodides that are soluble. Adding iodide solution creates an equilibrium where iodine is constantly being formed into iodides. Hope this explains
    Ps I really want to be a chemist some day

  • @Woloszow

    I wouldn't be surprised, if there would be vacuum deposited gold laminated between two plastic foils (eg. PET). Such gold would be very thin (100nm) and resistant to any chemicalls, as many polymers doesn't dissolve in lacquer thinner. Have you tried dissolving this gold layer after separation of foil? like you tried to dissolve it in NaOH?

  •  6 лет назад

    With this number of comments, I'm sure I won't get through, BUT, perhaps the card really do contain a very tiny amount of gold that was PVDed onto something like PE or PET film; this film would not be affected by paint thinner or other solvents, and the tiny amount of gold probably is not enough for the X-Ray to register.
    Incinerating the pack of cards and checking for gold in the ash (with something really sensitive) probably has more chance of success.

    I have a video/video series request...
    I saw a video the other day of a diamond that was heated up with a torch, then dropped in liquid oxygen and it turned into CO2 they said. Could make a video series called something like "Amazing Carbon".
    Anyway, Thanks for your hard work making your videos! I have watched most of them and enjoy them all. Hope to see more mine videos too, even if it isn't your mine.
