Cody's lab is one of the only channels that I am interested in and every time that he comes out with a new video I flock to it. It just fascinates me how he knows so much and the amount of thought that goes into it blows my mind, who knew platinum was so easy to come across.
At Pt prices, June 2020 (used $810/ oz T) I get $1.07 in Platinum recovered. Watching your video saved me so much time! Thanks too for all the information you share!!!
i dont know much about the stuff you talk about and after ive watched them i wont remember everything but it is just so fun to learn from ppl that have pasion and you have pasion youre a guy who could make match fun.
and to think, I subbed to Mumbo when he had less then 50k subs and subbed to Cody's mine when he had less then 70k. All my favorite youtubers are growing up
Tell you what, besides making videos about really cool experiments and life hacks, Cody himself is a very nice guy. Always smiling, being nice, kinda softspoken. Light years away from the standard of average youtuber, imagine me being an Engineer and majority of things he masters are my hobby. Great job son, never stop watching your channel, old and new alike.
+Cody'sLab Speaking of math, it seems like a lot of your videos are like, "please do the math first, this is just for fun, you'd actually loose money if you did this." Well I have two questions, are you making money overall? And do you plan to make money, for example if you did videos and turned a profit on the mining operation, that would be sick! Ps I just assume you are making money from ad revenue/ patreon, I'm really curious if your experiments and whatever else are generating money.
Cody season your crucible with borax on the inner surface will glaze the borax with the torch. helps prevent cracking and preheats the crucible prior to smelting. thanks for your videos always enjoy your posts.
You'd need to spend a day at the junkyard clipping off leads into a baggie to make anything reasonable. You'd also have to take into consideration the cost of the acids involved and so on so forth to see if its a worthy investment. It's a worthy investment IMO if you gather 2000+ spark plug leads (which is entirely possible) before doing a batch of these. Implying this is not a good source of primary income but some side spending cash. That iridium bead was only worth about $0.09 though :L not sure how much palladium one could make doing this.
Thumbs up for the mad scientist hair at the end. Also, awesome content. Your metal refining series has fascinated me from the beginning. Thank you for sharing you knowledge.
He knows that, that's what he asked: "assuming it is a perfect sphere, did you verified its density to see if it matches with the nominal density of platinum?" … that's just to put it in other words, he wasn't asking how to obtain the density of an object.
The gap is tuned for hot spark at least wear. The voltage over gap thing is no issue for car engines. That myth comes from kids modding their two-stroke motorbikes.
Cody the AC Delco plugs are OEM. They were original in the car. No one saw them until they were spent. That is why they aren't labeled. Any fine wire electrode (.4-.8mm) will be Platinum or Iridium. You can also tell by the ignition system if they are single or double. Single coil vs Waste spark (GM coil packs) in the coil packs the electric arcs swap origination points and the platinum must be on both sides because of this. Iridium is usually only on the electrode. The ground strap (hooked part) Will have a platinum pad. Fun fact: Iridium if not an Element that naturally occurs on Earth. ALL the Iridium we have is located in the layer of dust from the large meteorite strike that killed the dinosaurs. Love the videos. Keep them coming!
For anyone wondering, the price of platinum as of August 3rd 2016 is $37.32 per gram. The price of the platinum Cody collected is roughly $0.93. You're welcome :)
@Cody'sLab Almost correct on the gapping reason mate: Too big a gap & the spark is delayed- retarding ignition, and if too small a gap & the spark is to early- advancing ignition. Think of the spark plug as a kind of capacitor, dumping out the charge when it has reached a sufficient voltage to bridge the gap. Either way can be used in older engines (especially 2 strokes) to tune best for a given rev range. Awesome vid as always, thanks buddy!
Cody says 6 bucks but the cost of chemicals will put you in the hole unless you do a extreme amount and your time is value too it's a good experiment to do
I did the math, to get an ounce of pure platinum via this method, you would need a whopping 14,000 spark plugs. 2 milligrams per spark plug = 500 spark plugs per gram, just over 28 grams = 1 ounce, 28 x 500 = 14,000
Holy moly is this guy smart or what? He showed us super cool science , and probably made more money for the video than you guys will ever figure out trying to price out what the metals worth. Enjoy the science everyone😉
Cody u really deserve a lot of love you are absolutely awesome and i love all your videos ❤️❤️❤️😍 u r my inspiration for science experiments which i perform in my home love u Cody 😘😘😘
Maybe if you preheat the crucible and iridium in the furnace before hitting it with the torch, you will be more successful. I suspect that during the torching process, most of the heat is going into the crucible.
Could be. I find iridium really interesting. The first Periodic Video I watched was on iridium and I was hooked on the whole channel after that. Unrelated: A while back, I asked if you'd like me to send you some batteries to help with your traveling and videography. I'd still like to send those to you if you're interested.

I've read comments that say that RUclips pays between 300 and 4000 USD for a million views, depending on the type of content and location of the creator. Cody has averaged roughly 600k views on his more recent videos, so that would be about 5000 USD every week. Not bad. :)
Iridium is so badass. Practically non corrosive by any acid, densest element along with osmium, one of the highest melting points of the elements, one of the hardest elements as well and the only metal that retains good mechanical properties at a temperature above 1600 Celsius
i believe the Ac Delco plugs that werent marked are their Rapid Fire series and they are Iridium tipped. In the USA they cost aprox $6.36 each and are good for 100k miles. Its the only plug Ive used since the came out. the Bosch plugs suck usually last a yrs if that. You could prob get more platinum out of catalytic converters. Its been a big theft problem in the US people stealing them from automobiles and selling them for scrap. Nice collection of refining videos you have done here! thanks for sharing!

Awesome! Do you have any plans of trying different ammonium nitrate based explosives in the mine like ANFO? It might save you a little bit of money on Al powder (And if you do it right you can eliminate the NO2 fumes).
if you're talking about how apple seeds supposedly contain cyanide, that wouldn't really be possible, as they don't contain actual cyanide, but rather amygdalin, a compound that produces cyanide when it comes in contact with digestive enzymes, which means that in order to actually get the cyanide, you'd need someone to eat the seeds, which would both make the cyanide irrecoverable and kill the person eating it.
I actually have over 100lbs of cherry pits and I have extracted cyanide from them, its not that hard really, in fact so easy that I'm worried about showing people how to do it.
The unmarked spark plugs; my guess is that they were sold in bulk to a car manufacture, so the spark plug company may not bother to mark them. Thanks for another insightful video. I just wanted to say, I absolutely love this series.
Cody, this science deprived grandma is learning lots from your chanel. So good. Thank you.
Everybody talking about mumbo jumbo while I'm over here cringing at how close he almost cuts his fingers in the beginning...
Zach Dalehite my exact thoughts
Hey Cody, im a big fan of your channel and its refreshing to see a patriotic American utilizing the metric system. great work!!
I have like three buckets full of spark plugs (dad's a mechanic) might try this lol
You will spend $20 on chemicals to make.28c...
~500 plugs to a gram. 10-12 grams for a ring. So 5k-6k plugs for a nice wedding band.
I've got like 60 subscriptions on RUclips but everyday I first look for Cody. by far my favourite channel.
i love how he casually stores hydrochloric acid in a milk jug

Eat your cereal
That’s the jug it comes in when you buy lol
Sadly its only harmful to humans over long exposure sadly overrated :(

The chemistry you show off in these videos is just so damn cool.
this series makes me feel like a chemist even though I don't know alot about the chemicals
I really enjoy watching the process of extracting metals. It's almost therapeutic 😄
I was cringing so hard when he was snipping off the platinum, it looked like he was going to pinch his hand with a lot of force
You are like a really awesome science teacher but instead of test and long boring speeches you show us the cool stuff.
Hey Cody! your videos never fail to inspire me to do great things :). Keep up the good work!

For those curious, that's about $1.50 in platinum and $0.48 of iridium.
you saved my life!
I was hoping someone would do the math! So what is that like a nickel a plug?
which means you'd need a lot of spent spark plugs and a large operation to make it worth your while to actually do this.

Over 10 mins video from Cody? Yes, thank you very much sir!
Cody, you need to make a hydrogen/oxygen torch. They get up to 3200 C, plenty hot enough to melt palladium. Could be a fun build video as well.
He was trying to melt iridium not palladium
Well, iridium melts at 2446 C, so it would work for that as well.
He has one! If you go through his videos you'll find it....he melted tungsten and other things
Ah, I will have to go back and find it.
He has a homemade oxy/hydro torch. He has a vid or two on his channel about it
Cody season your crucible with borax on the inner surface will glaze the borax with the torch. helps prevent cracking and preheats the crucible prior to smelting. thanks for your videos always enjoy your posts.

You'd get around $1.53 for that platinum bead..
As he's said in previous videos, the purpose of experiments like this isn't to make money. Its just a demonstration to prove a concept.

the gm plugs that didn't say platinum are factory plugs. they are platinum
Cody, assuming that the bead is an ideal sphere, does its density match the one of platinum?
doing the math it came out to 22g/cm^3 that is close to platinum.
+Cody'sLab my favorite videos are extracting platinum and gold
+Cody'sLab I can't math. Whenever you explain something mathematically in your videos I have a hard time following along.
Literally weigh it, measure its volume. Divide them and voila. Not that hard.
He knows that, that's what he asked: "assuming it is a perfect sphere, did you verified its density to see if it matches with the nominal density of platinum?" … that's just to put it in other words, he wasn't asking how to obtain the density of an object.

Wow I just learned something new today thank you so much for being a scrapper.
for anyone interested 40 miligrams is worth about $1.50, could be profitable if doing it on a bigger scale
thanks 👍
And the 25mg of iridium is worth about $0.40
But how much was spent in chemicals and heat to process?
+Bruce E i bet, tho just a wag, that it is not economical. probably Cody wanted to educate us non- chemist types. :)
that's why you would want to do it on a much much larger scale. Doing all that for just a few spark plugs is obviously not worth it.
You never fail to impress, Cody.
Awesome! How much money would say 100 spark plugs worth of platinum be?
about 6$
