- I refine some silverware into a pure silver bar.
There seems to be some missing video at around 7:12 not sure why... This has happened before. There is nothing important so I have instructed RUclips to just remove the blank segment, lets see if they do it.

Why are you dissolving Moles in acid? I know they mess up the lawn but .. acid!
I hope you actually know what this kind of mole is.
;)
;)
+Sebastian Schumacher what kind? Swedish person is confused
+Lucas Jonsson A "mole" in chemistry is a way in which chemists are able to quantify the number of molecules present in a substance. Specifically, one mole is 6.02 x 10^23 molecules. No matter what element you are referring to, one mole is always made up of this same number of molecules, however one mole of an element like Hydrogen, will WEIGH much less than one mole of a substance like Gold, even though they have the same number of molecules.
One of the better analogies that I have heard is that you can think of the chemistry term "mole," similarly to how you would use the term "a dozen." You can have a dozen eggs, and you can have a dozen elephants, you still have the same number of each, 12, but the weight of the 12 elephants will be far greater than the weight of the 12 eggs.
Just found your channel today and I've been watching all night. Your channel is the typical channel you regret you didn't find earlier when you do find them. You've earned a sub! :D
same its 2 am and i cant stop watching
+Miguel Vaz OMG SAME!!!!!!
Hey Cody, I had an idea for another video you could do in the future, if you like. I was watching the silver darkening in the sunlight and at first I thought it was a light sensitive reaction like Silver Nitrate, and it made me think it would be really awesome if you could make your own photographic film and take a picture with it. Perhaps you could make your own Tintype camera and show us how the photo materials and chemicals work. That would be very cool.

sounds interesting haha
at the end of one of my recent videos i was trying to use silver chloride to detect radiation.

I love how all of these RUclips folks (I rather not use personalities bc it implies it’s a fake reality-star-like persona), I been enjoying are so smart, down to earth, and explains what I already learnt in high school or university but in a much easier way to fully understand and retained. Kudos to you sir! Keep it up!
I love how he does like mad science right on his door step.
Dat Bernie flash tho
The Bernie 2016 frame made me laugh so much
I just wanna say, you're an incredible talented and bright individual. I follow a lot of youtube channels but you really stand out. You are pure, yourself and very humble. I have deep respect for you. I fear this will end up in the background scatter on youtube. But I have the upmost admiration for you. Keep up the great and inspiring work. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I love these science experiments done in a way to educate and illuminate each step with clarity. Thanks for the videos, they have been great fun and a learning experience.

+EchoGenshu Yeah the description states that there is a videoclip missing maybe thats why its out of sync
+Dylan Sloan some one knows finally, no I am a caveman, I me no have money for pretzels
+Dylan Sloan me thank you
man i would not have bought that off EBAY, THRIFT STORES..they have less than average employees, at least once a week i find sterling sliver plates, bowls, salt pepper shakers, not plated pure sterling..i got a bowl for 4 dollars..its weight was 1 kilo sterling. guess how much money i made..and it was some kind of antique french artist bowl from the early 1920s so it ebayed for sliver weight at start..and ended up getting me 800 dollars for the art..i was asking 450 start as it was sterling and not pure..that was my best find ever..so now i can spot that stuff a mile away, if its junk sterling meaning bent up, cant be resold for decor value..i refine it down..and sell it off.
what do you know about items that are marked like "600 sterling" ?
first.....and thats a antique peice marked 600, do you have a image of it, most marked like that are from outside usa, 600 i think is Egypt silver marking it should be .600 STERLING but sometimes they just put 600. but that is also as it looks should be 60% silver by weight. give or take..
forgot to mention ususally when the sliver content is that low there is the possiblity it is mixed with a more precious metals..such as platinum, or Rhodium, they use that to add a shine to gold and plat, and sliver jewlery..so i would at least test it cant hurt...
oh and one other thing and i swear ill stop replying to myself..lol thanks for posting this. if you did not see my comment on another video. many people who do this refining guard their knowlege like cerberus guards the gates of hell. me asking questions on a refining forum got me banned...becasue i was not posting answers in the form of questions like jepordy..and they said i needed to fail to learn, but i could not afford to fail at the start, chemical costs strapped me out for cash..i needed to just recoupe my losses not mess up completely and be out some 600 dollars for gear and start up...but DUDADESILSE.com has great chemical prices..as well and flasks, beakers, stir rods, pipettes, etc..
+Manic Morzan who wants chump and Hillary for dead

#feelthebern
Thank you for your time doing this. A real hands on view of how refining works.
4:40 a easy way to tell if you have saturated your solution with silver. Is to let it cool to room temperature and if any silver nitrate crystals form you will know you have a saturated solution. Just add distilled water to dissolve the silver nitrate crystals.
Hey Cody, you inspired me to make also videos, but Im not that good withs chemicals like you, but I started building swords, weapons ans machines - keep your work up you are inspiring alot of people out there :)
+maexit nice tomahawk :D
Oh my god I just realized... You're human Minecraft.... You have two mines and a furnace that refines metal.
i shouted at my screen when you reached your hand in that nitric acid, NITRIC ACID DISSOLVES GLOVES CODY
Nice to see the process. I scrap through a big refiner. I usually bring 10lbs of mixed grade silver at a time and get back 10 ounce .999 ingots. Same thing with karat gold but much smaller quantities. 400 grams and get back 1 ounce .999 ingots. The karat gold melt usually assays at 50% (8K - 22K scrap and some gold-filled thrown in). I find the metal at junk stores for pennies. The refiner takes 2% of the gold (and whatever silver is alloyed in) and 10% of the silver. $4 for each ingot. Works for me.
Another editing mistake? The video does not match the audio around 7:20

+Alex Wolski reloaded page and it synced. Seems to be yt fault
+Alex Wolski Use the HTML5 player, not the Flash player.
I was watching on my phone at the time, and unfortunately the youtube app only supports flash
i don't understand the majority of this, but its so entertaining! also, why do the acids and stuff turn blue or green sometimes?
most copper compounds are blue in solution form
Ive been spending the past 2hours trying to understand this video and I've learned more chemistry from this than I do in school
I keep doing the math and so far I believe RUclips should about cover your losses. So awesome that you do these things and I really hope you break even or better as you totally deserve to!!
It's getting to be that my favourite parts of these videos are when Cody comes to terms with how much money he lost in making the pure metals at the end :)
Also, I loved the Bernie flash. Atta boy!
Really cool videos and thanks for posting them. Hopefully they are making up for your losses when they generate ad revenue on youtube :) I hope my "like" and "subscribe" helps the cause!
Is it just me or the voice is out of sync
Anyone else notice a long black screen at 7:10 ?
It desynchronized the video
you are the man cody
you have been my inspiration to study chemistry
Agree. He’s taught me how to love chemistry without having the funds to buy nice glassware etc. Cody is the king of chemistry with soda bottles and aquarium tubing!
Hey Cody! I've been subbed to you for probably about 2 months now. Just thought I'd tell you that I love watching your videos! They're super entertaining to those of us who like to learn how the world works. Keep up the great work man!

Coolest part when the molten silver was poured into the mold. Such shiny liquid.
Like always, we learn something new with Cody's lab
i really wish my chemistry teacher had done more practical demonstrations, this is much more interesting.
It seems like fromm al of sudden, the video and sound aren't in synch anymore
+RenoDesu reloading fixed it for me :D
Reloaded 3 times in a row, didn't fixed it. Oh well, I watched anyway
+RenoDesu Uninstall Flash (24/7 security vulnerability) and allow the HTML5 player to take over.
Great video again! High educational value, I like the explanation in all of the steps you show us, thumbs up!
I'm pretty sure it was oxygen that bubbled out at the end of the melt as the silver cooled, what a lot of people do is put a torch on it with low oxygen ratio as it cools to keep it smooth. Towards the end of your book where it talks about platinum group metals there is some talk about the gasses. Nice video!
Hopefully you make that ~$100 loss back on this video.
+Nicolavs Iohannis Eīganvs oh yes he will he have 230k subs man ;d
He probably won't considering he voted for Bernie Sanders.
i am an electrician and when you do chemistry i don't understand much but i still watch because i like your work. do more electrical projects as well
#Cody'sLab. I have never taken chemistry but must say you are making it interesting and I enjoy it.
Watching this today made me cry a little bit...I love you cody!
I want to sleep but it's so interesting and somehow addicting to watch
Feel the chemical burnnnnn Bernie 2016 xD
I have the exact same scale, and not once has it been used for something this worthwhile.
take a shot everything you here "in fact."
great work doctor Cody.
Can't you just wait for the market prices to go up to recoup some of the costs?
+Sunny Hill
yes, Fingers crossed!
+Cody'sLab good luck! Silver linings and all that.
+Cody'sLab From the speculators I've been watching on youtube (mainly Peter Schiff) silver is expected to reach $400.00/oz. Though that may be an overly optimistic opinion, who knows. It's definitely on it's way up, so I wouldn't sweat it too much if I were you. Thanks for the interesting videos.
+Thunderkleets It is $15/oz... There is no way in hell (short of hyperinflation) that it would ever reach $400 before WW3. haha!
Even gold was at $400 in my lifetime, and has only tripled.
+Thunderkleets "silver is expected to reach $400.00/oz." People of RUclips also say that Anunnaki lizard-men from Planet X are going to arrive in 2014.
Always fun to watch. Thanks!
angry wife:
"what did you do to my silverware?!"
ancient alchemist:
"farting silver."
That gas is the dissolved oxygen being released. They call it spitting. Silver is known to absorb oxygen when molten unless a reducing atmosphere is present. The cure is to keep oxygen from diffusing into your silver (reducing atmosphere) or let the silver cool slowly giving the oxygen a chance to exit. Did you see little cavities from the trapped oxygen in your bar when it was water-jet cut?
I'm a trained lab tech working in IT, so I'm quite interested in how metals are refined, seeing as I'm the guy at work who's reminding everyone to put the metals in the recycle bin. ;)
I am wondering if you've done, or will do, some videos about refining or separating base metals from scrap.
Also, about the gloves: I'm guessing you know this already, but gloves aren't technically impervious at all. Various types of chemicals will seep into them over time at various speeds depending on the material.
Once you've re-used a glove too many times, or if a glove happens to not impede a particular chemical (there are big, complex tables for figuring out which gloves impede whatever chemicals), the chemical in question will simply start to reach your skin.
A lot of people assume the gloves are impervious forever as long as they aren't cracking or anything, but they're not fundamentally different from gloves made of cloth; The inside of such a glove is nice and dry until water has saturated the exterior, at which time it starts flowing onto your hand.
Love the subliminal messaging! XD
You can't make your videos fast enough. You should just walk around with a Gopro on your head and narrate all day.
You should take that refined metal and make a homemade RUclips subscriber benchmark reward.
Alec Risser I believe he has
your channel blew up extremely fast. i can ot remember how many people where subbed when i did. but this is absolutely fantastic keep up the great work!!! really glad the bees are back. from my reasearch and understanding your new italian bees could soon be africanised if your one nest is infact a african colony. should look into genitics to protect your bees. I would love to see you teach how to make home made ionic and clolliodal silver
Thank you Cody. Your videos are great and I really appreciate watching them.
I always had problems when pouring into a thin metal tray, it would help a little if I got it glowing red while I pour into it..sand worked good for me and I had wood that worked a few times.....
That silverware still looks in good condition, it's actually kind of a shame to destroy it. Silver utensils are what I'd like to use personally.
Am I the only one who kinda wants to eat the silver chloride
The Trash Queen you can...
Mama Neko nope I want to too
Man, I won't lie that Bernie plug was a big stab to my heart. I love your videos and I've been binge-watching them and listening to them while at my job. I like your videos so much I guess all of us Trump supporters can act like that never happened. I'll call it a typo. Keep up the chemistry.
It may seem like a loss, but the price of silver can and likely will go up, while acid and copper wont go up much, and silverware usually wont either unless its designer brand or unique or whatever. So you can eventually make back the loss.
OOOO Who did you vote for????!
+Darc Gibson He voted for Bernie Sanders (it used to say so in the video but people was rude about it so he removed it)
+Republiken fuck, he did?
+DaPopeLP What'd you expect?
ThisFish lol, whats that meant to mean?
Ethan Cavill I think it was a declaration of ignorance ;)
Also amazing watching it freeze.
Lost $50 on the silver, Gained some back on the copper, lost $25 on supplies, then gained $4 per 1000 views as a youtube partner. which is about $507 currently.
+Ryan Van Wart
more like $.50 per 1000 views.
***** Let me talk to youtube, I'll get you a better deal...lol.
+Cody'sLab I was under the impression that youtuber partners couldn't say how much they made?
+Poppin' Loch Ness Hopster Yes they can. Most say they can't, because people just get butthurt. :)
4 dollars per 1000 views is not true, I made a video with 1k views and I got 0.50 cents
You say you lost 70 dollars but because you filmed it for RUclips you made it back
He made $230 of unsponsored income. Nobody except him will know how much he actually made.
*****
It's only the norm if he has sponsors.
Also he's probably not selling the silver. So he lost the full amount really ;)
that blue acid with the white silver stuff under it looked like a pretty ocean
When you think about it too, the money you lose when refining is basically like the value of the crafted item. Taking away the effort someone put into turning the silver into a nice looking possession. So it's like taking the bar, you could craft something and charge whatever you want, and indeed make money.
I don't think Cody is in a typical financial situation. He earns lots of ad-revenue, he's a student, and from the looks of it, his family has money.
Following you for a while, I was shocked about the Sanders endorsement, to say the least. If you want to keep doing what you're doing, it should say Trump 2016...
+Red Alert how wil a dumbed down america help bright people?
After I dissolve in Nitric I drop with copper tubing or rod. Seems to make a better product with less steps and a little cleaner. I have though done it your way as well but I used Hydrochloric acid instead of salt. Nice vid though. Like to see the copper carbonate result as well. Keep up the good work.
You should do a teaching series. Like "oxidation", "acids/bases", etc.
Cody and I have the same kitchen scale. We're basically best friends now.
Just re-watching this series and I've got to say, Awesome videos you put together dude! If I could meet any youtuber it would definitely be you! keep up the great work man!

Disappointed. Trump>Sanders
+Henry Davies Good one lol
Homo Sapiens I'm not kidding
+Henry Davies oh come on. I'm a Hillary supporter, but we should all know that sanders is so much better than trump. Cmon.
Vikings488 Nah
good ep. Silver is an awesome metal
Mecha Deets :-) I don't need to wonder. It will be approximately 5 to 6% more efficient.
With your acid recovery, would a reflux column work, or is the solution in the reaction flask too concentrated to redissolve/regenerate the acid, so you need fresh water anyhow?
Also, thought about a little manifold for you - since you've got an air pump in, and an air line out, a third line with a luer lock fitting would let you add material with a syringe. Did that a few times with some combustion experiments a few years back filling balloons with known volumes of gas. IV tubing and fittings are super useful in systems like that, and there's even some R/C aircraft hardware that might be more accessible that's used for fuel systems - fill/vent fittings, etc.
Awesome video. Keep 'em coming ;)
Never pegged you for a communist cody
+Cody'sLab
I think the colour change is not due oxidation state change of copper, but change from one copper complex to another.
I think the copper is all the time at oxidation state +2.
+user255
The color is caused by the valence eletrons the only way for the color to change is for the valence electrons to change.
+Cody'sLab
It's not quite that simple. Look at this picture of Ni+2 compounds:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel%28II%29_chloride#/media/File:Color_of_various_Ni%28II%29_complexes_in_aqueous_solution.jpg
BERNIE!!! Smart vote from a smart man. Also, do they use this type of chemical refining in large scale operations to get high purity or is there another way? I always thought it was as simple as smelting ore, removing slag and pouring into ingots, is that not the case?
Hahaha that flash of Bernie 2016 made my day
You’re pretty intelligent for a communist.
How is he a communist lol?
@@buttermage7168 it’s simple really. Anyone who supports Bernie Sanders is a communist.
@@stevenearman8891 how exactly? I’m not American and don’t really know about those politics
Today, 05 January, 2021, at the spot price 10 troy oz of silver brings $276.40. If you still have that bar it is now worth about $30 more than you have invested in it. That is 30 of today's dollars and not 2016's.
Just imagine chugging all the fluids Cody created
