In this weekly video I am making a wood ring from scratch using walnut burl, crushed blue opal and a light blue epoxy core. I tried to be as comprehensive as possible, hope you enjoy!

Just so you know, pretty much everything you need to do to make a ring like this can be done with a dremel and a ring mandrel, which is like 50$ together

+Tempest Rings what is the reason for the thin coats of the CA?
When I started, someone cut me strips of mahogany to use for veneer, the glue I got from the dollar store, and then sanded it all by hand. It takes times, but you feel a huge sense of accomplishment when you see that shine of completion
I have made hundreds of wood rings and a few videos on the subject and this is the best wood ring video I have seen! Thanks for the tips with the thick CA finish coat, stabilizing the ring with CA before shaping to prevent chipping and steel wool between coats. Great video again! Thanks for posting.

You mentioned that "this wood is really great at absorbing CA". Have you come across and woods/material that doesn't take the glue well?
I've been watching dozens of veneer ring videos and one thing no one ever mentions is how they avoid getting their fingers stuck together with all that CA. Or do you keep a bucket of acetone handy? I'd really like to know! BTW, this is one of the most eye catching designs I've seen. Beautiful work! Got my subscription.
DJ Sabo when I first started my fingers would get glue on them all the time, but now it almost never happens, it is just practice and knowing what you’re doing.
DJ Sabo - like Tempest said its practice... I put magnets in my speedcubes (modern Rubik's Cubes) as it enhances the mechanical action, but this involves CA glue and 4mm magnets in a confined space, my first attempt was successful but not pretty. The more I did it, the more I learned how the magnets and glue behave, early mistakes learned from (some comically tragic chain reactions can occur with tiny magnets), it *_does_* get easier... not because the task is simpler but rather you level up and get that *_+1 Crafting Skill_* bonus...
orion khan lol thanks for the leveling up analogy. I am finding it a little easier with each one I do. I bought a bottle of acetone just in case, but haven't even needed to open it yet. Now, if I could just level up my creativity skill to attempt some of these more intricate rings...
DJ Sabo it may help you to get a little Vaseline and wipe it all over your hands (like you were washing them under a tap - that action). It absorbs into the top layer of skin, so stuff sticks less, but there isn't a load of residue actually ON the surface, getting all over the piece you're making. I was told that tip years ago by a painter and decorator, to help with clean-up after painting, but I've found it's good for gluing work as well.
Is it healthy to wear this ring when you are outside and sweating? Seems that the glue would get in the skin.

When you use these epoxy cores, do you make those yourself or do you buy them?
i would love to see you making the lord of the rings one ring, but instead of the one in the movie, use gold and green luminescent powder (LIT, worlds brightest paint) .... use the powder in the shape of the writing on the ring" one ring to rule them all....the powder will charge from light and heat of the hand and will glow brightly...

WOW. Your craftsmanship puts me in mind of what it might have been like back in the stone age when man first began making object from natural material. What exactly did you use on the inside of this ring? I know you said epoxy but what is it specifically I’ve tried to find some but epoxy just brings up so much haha thanks man :)
Ash Blat looks like an epoxy resin pen blank that has been sliced into a thin strip

What's the "CA" you coat the ring with?
It's Cyanoacrylate. Available at most hobby shops or online.
Cyanoacrylate (CA) "Super Glue"
CA is a form of Crazy Glue.

Hi. Couple questions. (1) If you are shooting for a size 7 ring or size 12 ring, how do you start the process to be close to the correct size? Do you just use a socket that is reasonably close but slightly undersized? (2) can you provide a link to the blue enamel, the SS wire or tell me what gauge you use and finally, the light blue epoxy strip that becomes the inner face of the ring? GREAT VIDEO!!!
I have been making jewelry for a longgggg time and still have trouble getting the exact ring size unless I can fit the person many times... I wish he would answer this question too.
It would be nice if he would expand on the blue enamel...maybe it's just blue enamel paint...? The ss wire is 24 gauge.
Ring mandrels are stupid in my opinion because they are tapered...I have 3 ( a stepped one too)and I still prefer to fit the person's finger... I think I am going to just make some ring formers out of copper sheet...that way I can just grab the former and know it's the correct size. Maybe there are sockets that are just the correct diameter as rings...I don't know. I did see another video that's entitled "A ring for my mom"...and 30 seconds into the video is shows some pre-sized formers...perhaps they are sockets...I can't tell from the video.
With the amount of Cyanoacrylate used in your rings, won't they become very easily damage if accidentally exposed to things like acetone?
well whoever takes a shower and makes their fingernails afterwards while wearing their ring , doesent deserve it . there is always some reaction with whatever , just dont expose it to anything and you are fine lol .

pfff do you have a lathe ???? i guess not. i use it every day and i touch the jaw so many times nothing will happen it turns so fast that it just tickes you hand thats all. dont be so dramatic
Touching the jaws of the chuck is 1 thing, putting your finger into an opening with barely any clearance with something that can get traction (sandpaper) is completely different. If that finger ever gains traction the lathe will twist it clean off the hand and at that speed there is no way to react fast enough to pull. If lucky, it will just be the finger.
Yeah, I felt pretty ill watching that part.
