- This week we are fishing with a bait that went viral in 1987, Herb Reed's Original Slug-Go. We'll see if this soft plastic jerkbait from 30 years ago still catches fish today!
Special thanks to Shane Speal for letting me use several of his songs in this episode, including "Mother Leeds" and "Tattoo of You."

One of my favorite baits I was still smashing fish with them in the late 90s. Just found the second best channel on RUclips how do you not have a millon subs
Thanks, Big John! What is the delta between 1,000,000 and 308? Gotta be gettin' close...
@@RetroBassin you keep producing content like you do you and grow I like the old stuff brings me back to waiting on that bass pro wish book. Before I found your channel I bought some of the new creme baits and going to try to do a video on them tomorrow have it up some time this week
Man I would love to talk to you sometime! I am 55, and am the son of one of the fellas who help start all this! He qualified and fished the 74 nationals on Pickwick lake by winning the PA state in 73. I fished all the practice fishing for tournaments with him up and down the east coast, but was not old enough to be in B.A.S.S. My collection of lures are what you are doing your show about. Yes Im a Bagleys lover!!!! Do you remember Rebels Kentucky bass? It went from the best pattern Rebel ever made to Redeye bass and on to Ole bass etc, etc. Im not some weirdo friend, just thought I was alone in my love for lures I grew up with in Chester county PA in the 70s. My dad started Octorara Bass Masters in 1971. I wish I had his jumpsuits. He had a white one made for the 74 nationals.
Dude, I grew up in Malvern in the 70s and I'm a huge Bass fisherman. My buddy and I used to ride our bikes to all the farm ponds around the area to catch some Lunkers.
Please, please, please dont stop making videos! This is one of the best fishing channels on youtube! What memories these all bring! My father fished with a bunch of these retro lures, which werent retro at the time! Keep it going! I actually just caught a bass on a black slug-go about a year ago. I love the action of the things in the water.
Thanks for the kind words, Dee. I'll keep on crankin' 'em out till the new school turns old school!
I never quit using them, one of the most effective and productive baits around ever! Made many people believers back then and still to this day!
Bubble gum sluggo was one of my go to baits in the early 90s also. I still have a few around!
MrShawnmg I used to fish a bubble gum Pop-R back in the day as well!
I guess they still make them? I just came from thier website. Lol.
My dad gave me loads of packs of different colored slugos from the 80’s still in like new condition, perfectly usable.
Get them slugs wet!
Cool video, and some good high points about the Slug-Go.
The Slug-Go stick bait was developed in Herb Reeds garage, and was initially sold from there... it wasn't "Linker City," yet. That came later.
And the Slug-Go wasn't well received in the beginning. It just sat there, it looked pretty unimpressive, and was kind of a red-headed step child in the lure world.
Then, it won a few tourneys and people started to notice. If there's one thing you can depend on bass anglers to do, it is to buy anything used to win a tournament.
Then the Slug-Go was promoted heavily by B.A.S.S. Hall-of-Famer, Doug Hannon (RIP), and the Slug-Go was set on the path to greatness.
(There are a few videos with Doug on RUclips, featuring the Slug-Go)
Now, the Ol' Slug-Go is mostly forgotten. A few die-hards look on them fondly with a nostalgic glow. Now and then some cagey type stumbles on them, and thinks they be that SOMETHING DIFFERENT the fish need to see.
All the imitators, however, the senkos and flukes and swimmy, wiggly soft-plastic thingies - they owe their start to the Slug-Go.
Thanks for this great video. And glad you didnt get hurt!
...and now it's SHAMELESS PLUG time: When I initially got a Slug-Go, in my hands, I did a First Impressions piece. You can see that here:

Nice article! Also love the Fin-S-Fish.
Your videos are awesome! I’ve bass fished for 35 years and watching your videos takes me back to my childhood. I still use pistol grip rods and most of my reels were made in the late 70s and 80s. I still have several packs of Slug-Gos. Keep the videos coming!
Sure will, Bill! Those 5-foot pistol grip rods sure do fish differently from the 7-1/2-foot medium heavies I was fishing with...
RetroBassin I’ve always felt I have more control with 5 1/2 footers than those long handled, unwieldy things.
RetroBassin maybe I can send you an old school Lews rod and reel to review?
I used sluggos in the 90’s and won a local tournament with them I was very impressed so I bought a boatload. still have some left and I ordered some different colors yesterday. When nothing else worked I would go for the sluggos and my fishing got a little better.
Larry DeBoer When I was younger I didn’t know how to feel the bite, so I tended to choose brighter colors and watch the lure like a hawk. When the bait would disappear, I’d set the hook.
I still have them in my 35 year old tackle box. Now that my son is 10 yrs old, that's the only way I've taught him to fish. Slug Go! We catch crappies and bass with the little 3" guys on ultra light spinning rods. They work when nothing else does....
2020 and still fishing my old Sluggo's
Yeah buddy, Rusty!
I grew up in the late 80’s/ early 90’s watching Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, Al Lindner, and Roland Martin. This channel is so nostalgic it’s incredible!
Me too, and welcome!
True story, 1987 while fishing a small pond in Middle Ga. I ran out of Plastic worms and decided to try the " Slug-Go " lures I had bought the weekend before at " K-Mart " , First cast and I was reeling the lure in , when a small bass grabbed one end of the lure and almost pulled it off the hook, Two more cranks of the reel and a 4 pounder grabbed my sideways dangling " Slug -go" , So I discovered " Wacky Rigging " with Slug-Go " lures in 1987 , and I'm still laughing at the " Newest " finesse technique , they call wacky rig fishing !!!!!
I’m amazed your able to throw weightless that well with that vintage rod and reel!
Them old Daiwas sing!
@@RetroBassin I got an old Daiwa Tebco combo from Sears like 1980s and that thing sails dude. Casts farther than my shimano.
I fished against Herb Reed on the Red Man Tournaments in the 80's and he won Lake Wallenpaupack in 1986 I think. In 1991 Herb Reed finished 2nd at the BASS Federation National Championship narrowly missing qualifying for the BASS Masters Classic. I out fished him with a Bubble Gum Slug-Go and did qualify for the 1991 BASS Masters Classic! I still fish with them and have not gone threw the flat of Bubble Gum Slug-Go's Herb sent me yet.
Wow that was spooky! Glad you got the fish and the camera! Nice save and nice video! Subbed!
Thanks, Seven Fish! Now that the fishing is heating up, tons of old time tackle to review...send requests!
I crushed fish with Slug-Gos. One of the best plastics I ever fished.
Sluggo's are a phenomenal calm water bait around any vegetation..I use 10lb stren mono on 5 1/2ft bait casting rod hold rod low and twitch twitch BAM !!
Landed a 8 . 3 largemouth on a salt and pepper sluggo a few weeks back on lake Griffin in Florida
Need to get to Florida!
Wow! You weren’t kidding! That was almost a tragedy. Great hook! (Is that a fishing joke?)
We would totally slay SoFlo Largemouth on em as well as Peacocks, still do! It’s a timeless bait! Worked 20 yrs ago, and still produces!
Heck ya man, looks like a really good way to spend a spring day. Havent fished a sluggo in awhile that is for sure. Sucks about the tripod. Keep the videos coming man.
Thanks RHYAK! I will trade a tripod for an SLR any day!! Rookie RUclipsr mistake...
Love these vids man. Your contrast is really dark! lol super glad that camera didn't go in the drink.
Right you are on the contrast, and quality...I work really hard in post-production to make these videos look that bad! Check out some old Jimmy Houston footage on his RUclips channel. Was sort of my inspiration!
@@RetroBassin I work really hard mid-production to make sure my videos look bad lolol
Find me a vintage Pond Prowler, and we can have a time! I remember Bass Tracker actually made a version in the 1980s. @@JoelFishes
@@RetroBassin I believe it - I've seen a few on craigslist that were clearly *very* old, looked a lot different, that's for sure. I can barely catch fish on modern gear and lures, let alone retro gear :)
Love this channel! Just subbed.
My biggest sluggo fish was 1988 Lake Shasta CA, 5 pound largemouth while rod was resting on boat gunnel while I was getting a drink
That was crazy.. glad you saved the camera.. great catches by the way.. love the slug-go
Would have been back to GoProville full time if I lost the Cannon!
@@RetroBassin oh most definitely..
Great channel my friend! Keep the videos coming!
Every Saturday morning!
I still have some of the blueback ones and they still catch bass today. Ive caught both largemouth over downfalls and smallmouth under overhangs near the bank .
Cool channel man .....love the different idea 💡for a fishing channel.
Stay at it you grow. Love the classic bass fishing gear.
I’m in for you deff got a new sub.
Kevin Sharpe Thanks for the kind words, good buddy! More to come...
Biggest bass I ever saw in the wild was hooked on a 6 inch sluggo I had her whipped I thought, she was laying on her side in the moss bed. I was wading out to get her and she got her tail back in the water, made a giant flop and straightened the weak hook that came with the bait. She was every ounce of 12 pounds or maybe more…… I never saw her again.
Gotta love that. Great to see classic tackle catching the fish. 👍👍
USING THE OLE Pistil grip again. I never liked them from day one BUT man did they get some attention. I have a couple of then in the garage.
Dust those 5-foot, 6-inch bad boys off!
So is the slugo basically what the Fluke of today is? Also can you do a vid on Terminal tackle and rod and reels !!
Definitely need to do a terminal tackle video...great suggestion! The Slug-Go was the grandfather to all those baits, and fishes quite similar. The main difference is the width of the tail area.
Dude what’re you talkin about? Pink is probably the all around best color for a wide variety of fish. I’ll be having a horrible day, throw on a pink lure and BAM! Idk maybe it’s my area but pink seems to get the most reactions out of fish for me. Especially freshwater
Thank you very much!!
Glad you found it! There is one more…
We started fishing with these in the late 90s and you'll be surprised that bubble gum 9" for salt water Striped Bass in Long Island but that red shad 4.5" black with the red belly for large mouth that texposer hook rigged weightless reeled in very slow just seen another RUclipsr nose hook it and work it quick like a jerk bait and was getting fish I just bought a few 4.5s and 3" for the Ultra Light gonna see what happens...
Great video bro. I just found and gave my a kid a entire Plano box filled with Slug-Go's and hooks. He will be going retro this summer.
You make me think old school and remember your roots
Bev O Thanks Bev! LOL
I remember those. Takes me back to joining B.A.S.S. And getting that little blue tackle bag and a pack of Slugos
I still remember the carded 4 pack plus a hook...didn't want to lose that hook!
I have a pack of slugos that I never really used, but I have to give them a chance now. I also have two pistol grip rods that I have to give a try again, I caught a load of fish with them so I dont really know why I stopped using them.
i think an 80's tow vehicle would top off the whole thing.. love the channel..
Don't think I ain't looking.
Slugo are still great caught some last year short snaps lots of darting action great bait
i loved the slugo flukes
Hey man I dig what you’re doing I’m a huge fan of the vintage equipment. Maybe make a video using vintage top water plugs (I recommend the ol river runt). Keep it up my guy!
Just came across this video...I'm so sorry for how hard I laughed when you went for the camera....but that was one hell of a fish catch while saving the camera....😂😂🤣🤣
Great channel and concept! Somethings catch fishermen something catch fish! Can't wait to see this channel blow up! You close to the DFW?
Just south of Austin, TX, but need to get out that way more!
@@RetroBassin I've got lake front property on a power plant lake water temps in 55-70 dead of winter. I'm around the belton area from time to time myself! Tight lines!
I tried the Slug-go in two different sizes and never caught a fish on it. It looks like they are still making them in a six inch size.
The sluggo was like the original senko. The bubblegum sluggo is one of the best striper and weak fish baits around, everyone throws finS or super fluke the sluggo is a diff look.
Good video anytime is a good time for a slug go I have been using the Lunker City slug go for over 30 years with out a doubt the BEST jerk bait ever. My personal favorite is the 4.5 in all black rigged with an eagle claw 1.0 45 automatic
Was that a bill dance blooper lol
Did I see the Daiwa Procaster Magforce in your hands. That's cool to see if so, I have my Dads sitting here that he bought in the early 80s. It was a top of the line reel back then on a pistol grip rod. Really like seeing that back in action. Thanks

Okay you might get sick of me commenting on all your old videos. So first off, glad you didn’t break your neck. Nasty fall. 2nd, if this was an infomercial, I would have ordered some Slug-Gos. Strange looking worm like a cross between a Senko and a trick worm I guess. Love the colors. What is that called, Nuclear Waste Day Glo? I want one! Lol Best line in the video was about the pink one being a bait that inspires no confidence! So funny. Watch your step!
Buddy, that was an intentional jump...but I got lucky just the same! The green one was called chartreuse pepper...and Slug-Gos are still available today!
Nice Bill Dance impersonation.🙃
So awesone to see you fishing those baits, I learned to fish soft plastics with those. Bubblegum all the way
Side note where can a guy get 4 inch berkley power slugs ?
They still work as great as ever
Love your channel!
This lure is still a champ. Love it!
I couldn't help but notice that fantastic brown carpet and seats. Is your boat retro aswell? Can you do a vid on your boat?.... I guess I should have looked through yours vids before asking the question lol 😆
Yup we did one!
Man you have to come to florida years ago i caught an eight in a half pounder.
Do they still make them? I think the pike where I live would love them.
I guess they still are making these. Just came from thier site.
If I remember correctly weren’t the sluggos the first ones to make the extra wide gap worm hook popular and one in the package? EWG hooks weren’t mainstream most were using straight J worm hooks.
They made and still produce the Texposer Hooks. Herb Reed had the hooks patented and they are perfect for the Slug-go. Did you see how solidly he had those bass hooked? The real deal.
We used to murder the bass on pink slugos, they worked really well in saltwater to
You need a p.o.box so that people can send you vintage fishing things to show on your channel
Now THAT is an idea!
But are you using those tex-poser hooks?! Also that rod has more bend in it than my Shakespeare spinning rod 😅
No, but I've got some Tru-Turns!
@@RetroBassin fair enough 😅
Great Bait, used them back in 92
Back then then there were hotter than a hot cake on the 4th of July!
I still fish the sluggo from time to time and I still have some 25+ years old ones that still work like a champ
Wow I just bought a whole bag of these unopened at a thrift store I mean a bag of bags there is probably 25 different baits all still sealed any interest?
If that wasnt a straight up Bill Dance hook set and deck roll in the beginning then I don't know what is.
After watching a bit and seeing was a dive for camera want to switch response to a cCal Ripken Jr moment....
Yeah I love slugos but have to have wire leader on them in northern WI which ruins action a little! lost to many to pike, they chew em up eventually but 5 nice fish average.
I still have some of the originals from back in the day. I have some 4in and 6in left. I had bought some 100pks of them.
I had some leftovers I didn’t know I had so I made molds and pour my own now.
Love that pistol grip rod...
I think I've forgotten how to cast a longer one!
Lunker city is around the corner from my house!
Tell Herb I said howdy!
Wish linker city sold the original salad spoon. They make it thinner overall and with a wider more round nose now. Just doesn’t move the same...
5:55. Its your own Bill Dance blooper reel
Those are great baits I can't believe they're still not making them
Slug-o caught fish like crazy.
They still catch fish
Heddon lucky 13?
A classic! Back when you were either "plugging" or "worming" for bass.
Keep it up retro man slugo was for plastic what hulk was for wrestling
Watch this vintage Lunker City video! ruclips.net/video/I_-mZAcXQw4/видео.html
And this one! ruclips.net/video/RyU9O-AaD-w/видео.html
I still use them !!!!
I’ve used a plethora of them thar lures.
This is rick l know it comes up bevo but l found slugos
I still fish sluggos and finSfish…
Back in Maryland, everyone threw Fin-S Fish for stripers!
@@RetroBassin I DO live there! Lol
Nice snag!
You know if when you open your soft plastic put the a zip lock bag keep them indoors they will last forever I have them if or 20 years and they still work also don't leave in the sun directly!!!!!@!
Bubblegum 😉👍🏻 I remember well
There also was a slugo ss with a longer tail question l am sure you have heard of fishing with the zoom double fluke rig l wonder what would happen if you fished a double slugo rig have to try that l still catch fish with slugo and l have caught a lot of bass on bubblegum pink long live the retro man and as long as we are going retro when you catch a fish and say ho son you are copying Roland Martin who learned it from a stand up comedian by the name jerry clawer if you want a great laugh look him up he did all the voices he is as good as partick f mc manus check them out also in my lure collection l have about a hundred or more lures including a Paul Bunyan 66 in the box which was a forerunner of the shanon twin spin
They still sell the Slug-Go SS today. Never fished it myself, but looks ultra finesse!
On my wife’s phone hey retro man l am going to report a problem to you they only carry 12 inch jelly worms in 5 colors in my bass pro no other Mann’s products BASS PRO should be ashamed the most famous worm and l can’t get there jelly wagler or springer worm in Chicago shame on bass pro !!!!
Lmao
I remember when the Sluggo came out ! Lol my favorite was when they made the Sluggo SS . That whip like action of the tail was awesome!! Durability sucked but they caught me a poopton of bass back in the day !!
