I LOVE how affectionally Robin Williams looks when he clearly sees how hard Marlee Matlin is trying to not only talk but also how she literally puts so much into saying, "Good Morning Vietnam". A classic line from the movie. Shows what a wonderful human being he was and good for Marlee Matlin for literally training with a voice coach to do this. :-)
highlyanticipated death She won Best Actress the year before, it's tradition at the Oscars for the previous years winners in acting categories to present the next year. And she did a great job announcing the nominees, what's your problem?
3 yrs prior to this win, I was one of his limo drivers at a company he contracted with. He was the nicest, most polite man! Always asked to listen to KROQ on the radio. Carried his own bags, always. And his wife was always kind, and waiting for him as soon as we pulled up. Every time. Beautiful, genuine people.
I think it's very sweet that he dedicated his award to Kirk and his parents. He truly deserved it and Gordon Gekko is timeless, excellent performance by Michael. And Marlee Matlin learned to speak after winning her Oscar the year before! Go Marlee!
Kirk had apparently told Michael "I want you to play a real son of a bitch". When Michael got the part in "Wall Street" he rang his dad and said: "You're gonna love me in this, Dad. I'm mean. Really mean."
Michael Douglas is a great actor and a cool guy. I stopped him on the Upper West Side a few years ago and got a picture with him, he was really cool about it...
Just watched your movie yesterday (25 years after its broadcast🙂) And afterwards I gotta say: Congrats Mr. Douglas, very deserved! I also enjoyed the latest picturisation starring Shia LaBeouf and Carey Mulligan. And about Marlee Matlin, what a remarkable, beautiful lady! We can only imagine how hard it must have been for her to actually announce the nominees! 💪
A brilliant actor. For me the best since a bit more than 30 years. I feel in love with him and his work as I saw him in "The Streets of San Francisco". I tried to catch eveything I could get of him. As Gordon Gekko...awesome!!! It was a hard way for him to step out of the shadow of his dad like he said. And it´s great that he thanked his father in that way. He made his own way! Living legend! 🤩🥰👏
It's so great to see an actor who actually deserves the win. He had some stiff competition too . Looks like a great oscar year as cher won for moonstruck. One of my favorites. Kirk douglas was a giant in hollywood. It cant be easy steeping out of his shadow but to younger generations that werent alive when douglas was a heavy weight Micheal surely surpassed his dad or at least is great in his own right. Does not happen often. Look at sports how many sons of hof guys become better than their dad?
Michael Douglas deserved that oscar, big time... his brilliant and electrifyingly badass Gordon Gekko is one of the reasons why Wall Street is a masterpiece and one of Stone's greatest works. Aside from that, (the lovely) Marlee Matlin's presentation was very, very moving. It caught me a bit off guard.
"The point is ladies and gentlemen, that acting, for lack of a better word, is good. Acting is right, acting works. Acting clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of evolutionary entertainment. Acting, in all of it's forms, acting for comedy, for drama, for romance, sci-fi has marked the upward surge of cinema, and acting, you mark my words will not only save movies but that other malfunctioning company called Hollywood. Thank you very much."
This was Michael Douglas's, and Cher's year (Michael with good work in two hit films Wall Street, and Fatal Attraction, and Cher, with three movies, and a return to the music charts).
All of the Best Actor Nominees of 1987 except for Marcello Mastroianni have won at least 1 Oscar: Michael Douglas: Wall Street Robin Williams: Good Will Hunting William Hurt: Kiss of the Spider-Woman Jack Nicholson: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, and As Good as it Gets
Gordon Gekko was the part of Douglas' career; even in the somewhat inferior sequel, Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps, Douglas was still outstanding. It's ironic that Michael's Father, Kirk Douglas, never won a competitive Oscar during his career, despite worthy performances in Lust For Life, The Bad And The Beautiful, Spartacus, and Paths Of Glory. Michael ultimately co-produced the successful film adaptation of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, which Kirk had starred in on Broadway; Kirk couldn't obtain financing to make the film, and gave the rights to Michael, who hired Milos Foreman and Jack Nicholson, after it was determined that Kirk was too old for the lead role by the mid 70s.

those lines are unfortunately everything wrong with American and wider western society. the idea that you cant be happy or have a valuable existence unless you’re chasing a dream of being super rich and idolising material items. Of course someone on £400k a year can be happy and want for nothing. So can the person on £40k. If they have love then that is ok. Money does not make you happy.
I am here because Michael Douglas won a well-deserved Academy Award but I stay for Marlee Matlin who is so beautiful, gorgeous, sexy and amazing here, I love her sign language and I love also that she spoke too.

I'm grateful to be able to enjoy clips like this one, seen here for the first time all these years later. 1988 was a year of hell for me. Makes me wonder how many other events I would have enjoyed that I missed the first time around, in my not so good old days.
*1988 was a year of hell for me.* Now, you've got me all curious. What was hellish about it? See, 1988 was a great year for me. I was adopted that summer and had to adjust to a new family/friends/country/language. No doubt overwhelming but very exciting all the same. I look back rather fondly at that year.
Let's all take a moment now, and forever, to acknowledge the eloquence, sophistication and stunning beauty of Marlee Matlin. Bravo, for this incredibly touching introduction. Such and exquisite lady.
to everyone hating on her for speaking: she isn't even able to hear her own voice! she did amazing actually. If you read her book, "i'll scream later" you would know it took her months of speech therapy to know how to and be able to say the nominees for this academy award. when a deaf person speaks, since they can't hear their own voice, they have to learn how to shape their mouth so they can say the word. very difficult! i'm proud of how she did this, and she did amazing. GREAT JOB MARLEE!

Marlee Marlin looks gorgeous here! Good for Michael Douglas. I watch "Wall Street" at least one or twice a year. He acts his ass off in that movie! I'm also loving Michael's EPIC mullet!
Happy Birthday to the handsome, talented and interesting Michael Douglas, he is a very good actor and he does excellent work in everything he is in and he won a well-deserved Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Gordon Gekko in 1988 in movie Wall Street 1987, he is 77 years old and he was born on September 25, 1944 and he shares a birthday with his second wife Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta Jones who is 52 years old and she was born on September 25, 1969, I wish them both a great day and many more to come.

me too :D
We miss you robin.
@BlueFox94 Yes but how did she know he said it that way?

Well deserved. Michael was just superb as Gordon Gekko.
Wall Street is a masterpiece .
It's very slow and dated now.
James Henderson lol you need better taste in cinema then
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s a good movie. Nothing more, nothing less.
Wall Street is the History

@highlyanticipated death you're a sociopath
@highlyanticipated death she's deaf have a little respect
That was so adorable!
Nicholson is sitting there with a dark sunglasses like a badass

he is a badass, real bad i'd say

I just rewatched Wall Street last night and absolutely loved it! Michael Douglas was a more than deserving winner!
Watch Money Never Sleeps, it's the only sequel Olive Stone ever did
I watched it for the first time last night because I'm actually trading and about to seriously start options trading
Damn, Marlee Matlin was gorgeous here,
She was even more stunning when she won the Oscar, even with those glasses...
She still is.
She's always gorgeous
His dad lived for another 32 years! Amazing and fully deserved.
I watched this for more Matlin than Douglas, but he seems to be a good man with his values in the right place.
Marlee Matlin looks stunning......
Michael Douglas one of my favorite actors love him so much!
I loved that he mentioned his son Cameron at the end of his speech: "Goodnight, Cameron, I love you!"

you need to make that story real first..
Wow once in a lifetime moment
The sweetest thing when Robin Williams said good morning Vietnam and Robin's reaction is wonderful
Michael douglas was beyond brilliant in his role for Wall Street.

Just saw "Wallstreet" (the first one) and i must say that Michael was amazing - the perfect role for him. A very deserved win, and a top speech too...
What classy man . To thank his father from the heart. Great movie and great part
"Thank you for helping a son step out of the shadow" - :)
Def one of the best Oscar speeches ever. Amazing performance.
Michael Douglas has great acting in Wall Street.
It's hard to believe that anyone thought he couldn't play Gordon Gekko. He created a legendary film character with this role.
