R. I. P. to one of the underappreciated greats of his generation. He was sadly kind of forgotten after the 80s, but getting 3 nominations back to back is no small feat and should be remembered
He has appeared in so many great films, either in big or small parts... Altered States, Body Heat, The Big Chill, Gorky Park, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News, The Accidental Tourist, The Doctor, Second Best, Smoke, Dark City, One True Thing, Sunshine, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Tuck Everlasting, The Village, A History of Violence, Syriana, The Good Shepherd, Mr. Brooks, Into the Wild, several Marvel movies... Simply an amazing actor with an amazing body of work.

Homage to a wonderful actor who will be truly missed. One of my all-time favourite movies is The Accidental Tourist. His sensitive portrayal of a grieving, depressed, and disoriented man who finds a new spark in life touched me deeply.
Interesting to see Marlee Matlin (who was a complete unknown to the public at the time) sitting beside Hurt in the audience as his date. When just the following year she TOO would be on that very stage winning Best Actress for Children of a Lesser God and becoming a star.
@@CEH477 Yes, sadly, I've heard those accounts made by Matlin. I think Hurt maybe did apologize for his actions towards her, but it was still unfortunate. No doubt jealousy and egotism (because of her newfound fame and success at the time) played into his behavior (which was inexcusable, of course).
Wtf. I wonder what the deal was with Hurt and Matlin. Why in the hell would her winning a best actress anger him? I mean, clearly he's already an established actor, having won the award himself. He should've been proud of her. His ability probably aided her performance. Well, I dunno, we weren't there. I just don't get his beef. But, he's gone now. He was a highly skilled actor.
I will never forget the first time I saw William Hurt on film. My dad recorded had the movie Altered States on VHS. I liked science fiction movies so put it on from my dad's library. I was scared out of my mind and home alone, lol. Thank goodness it all turned out ok in the end. My favorite WIlliam Hurt roles were in Accidental Tourist and Gorky Park. I always wished they made more Detective Arkady Renko books into movies. They seem relevant even today. And yes, Altered States. However, I always wished I could have seen him in the theater live, from what I've read he was even more exceptional.
Great to hear him saying 'saudade', which corresponds to something like 'I miss you'. People say that the exact meaning of this word can only be expressed in Portuguese.
His true humble reaction to the unexpected win speaks volumes on how intensely this man was feeling life and his profession. There is NO movie he played in, which doesn't show his greatness and deep capability of getting involved into the character he was interpreting. Very underrated and underestimated actor, as usual when it comes to real greatness. A big loss.

William Hurt is one of the finest actors around and one that I highly respect for how he is always willing to go back to acting classes to work on his craft. This Oscar was very deserved, easily one of the best given out. I have to say that I also highly respect him for acknowledging the great Raul Julia, who was snubbed unfairly that year. I do think it is interesting that he is a right wing Guy now ( I don't know how right wing he was then), but both Runaway Train and "Coming HOme" were Left=Wing. films. Runaway Train is about Prisoners and it takes a sympatheitic look at them. I would say that is liberal.
Love it when Sally Field made fun of her own joke in accepting her Oscar the year before. And look at the women these nominees brought with them! All Oscar winners: William Hurt dated Marlee Matlin (the following year's winner), Jack Nicholson dated Anjelica Huston (the winner earlier that nite), and Jon Voight brought along his daughter, Angelina Jolie (a winner herself 14 years later from the night of the ceremony). Incredible!
And this is where the misconception of Sally Field's infamous speech came from. In the original, she said only "you like me, right now, YOU LIKE ME!".
