- Painting Warhammer like it's 1994. Looking back at Second Edition Warhammer 40,000 and the retro paint set of the mid 90s. I paint an Ultramarine Space Marine, a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warrior and an Eldar Guardian. Using basic painting techniques, this video is ideal for beginners looking to get into the world of Warhammer.

What was your first model? Do you want to see more second edition stuff? I've really enjoyed dipping back into the past, so just let me know. 😀
Og plastic skeleton cav! White plastic sprues for the
Laziest of us 😂
Mine wasn't straight from GW technically, it was a box of Space Crusade my parents bought me for Christmas as 'my thing' (Dad owned Heroquest and he did all the painting on it etc.) featuring those classic pushfit monopose marines like the one featured here, the old Chaos Dreadnought (which I wish would get an updated kit even if it's just a nostalgia bait one) and so on.
My first model was the old Ulric the Slayer, which I got as a birthday present from my big brother along side his used (but unpainted) 2nd Edition starter box and the Space Wolves codex.
My first models were the Space Crusade minis, I wish I still had all of them.
EDIT: Yes please more 2nd ed stuff! There's too much grimdark edgyness when it comes to warhammer, I need more RT/2nd silliness!
Would love to see the old skeleton horde painted
Poor Eldar still using guys from the 90s
Haha, Ciara asked if that was the current model! 🤣
Lol!
Rediculous. They are so important in the lore. Eldar are dope
If it ain’t broke right 😂
They desperately need an update.
I love the idea of taking old and new miniatures and painting them in the old color scheme styles, even if the paints themselves are newer. I love the dynamic and bold colors that they used to use. Even some of the cartoony styles of old.
That 2nd edition eldar codex is looking in a lot better condition than mine
The nostalgia just hit me right me in the feels ❤️ brilliant video
that smell of the plasiticy paints from the 90s, i was there too! Blood Angels
damn this takes me back... great video
amazing work
Thanks! 😀
Old warhammer looks so cartoony. The 90's were very colorful.
As someone who got into the hobby as a ten-year old Eldar player in 2nd Edition, I just wanted to say, "You know what you have to do."
Brilliant takes me back...
Eldar : good choice at that time :)
Smell is one of the most powerful senses.
You may "forget" how something smells, but the moment you smell it again, a torrent of memories and emotions come forward.
Recently got back into the hobby and smelling the glues and paints again was a trip down memory lane
I'm most impressed that you were able to find a set of 1994 paints that aren't solid rock.
Oh my lord, these are great. There is a huge amount of nostalgia in this video. This needs to be 2 hours long. Goblin green and all the other great paint names.
All the nostalgia. It's time to get cracking on the 2nd edition eldar boys now! 😀
They renamed goblin green? Do the paints even still have the same naming scheme?
@@Ymgarl GW could not trade mark Goblin or Green.
@@Ymgarl The original Goblin Green is renamed Warboss Green, but it's not actually the same. Apparently a 1:1 mix of Waaagh! Flesh and Moot Green get's you pretty darn close to the original Goblin Green.
Tune in to watch Olly literally huffing paint! In all seriousness, excellent video. Really appreciated the nostalgia, I remember buying this exact same set back in the mid 90s.
Guy literally spent minutes sniffing paint lmao
This took me back to painting blood angels terribly as a 10 year old.
I'd like to see more 2nd edition stuff, but what I wouldn't mind seeing is a follow up to this video where you take the three models seen in this video and do the same schemes but with modern paints and techniques. Be interesting to see the old models with a modern look.
Hey Blood Angels will always be the Marines to me First Space Marine image I ever saw!
A long time before the sea of blue you see now!
Same I was horrendous at painting.
I think videos like these should make many enthusiasts happy. The painting guys show you grand schemes of light, shadow, and how to make the perfect metal gleam on a back pack after 100 layers of paint - and there we have 90s vintage models in their simplistic yet enjoyable colors.
Just shows you don’t have to treat all your models like a Golden Demon entry, and you can be happy with just a basic scheme and an enjoyable paint session.
I'm still using a bunch of original paints from back then...I think some of the colours are excellent still. Elf Grey, Crimson Gore, Tentacle Pink, still up there with the best!
That sounds like a great collection.. don't tempt me to hunt down more haha.
I would love to see more retro warhammer video ! I'm becoming obsessed with it also and I just bought a chaos metal dreadnought minutes ago ! great stuff !
Ah amazing. I have to say, I didn't appreciate it at the time (or even 10 years ago) but I've suddenly started to love it.
This video almost made my cry. My dad used to take me to the local games store on the weekends for a new mini, playing with my brothers on the patio floor… the excitement of looking through the books and trying to replicate the paint jobs… simpler times.
Definitely more 2nd edition stuff please! These vibrant colours are needed in these dark times
3rd edition Eldar was my introduction to Warhammer. Seeing the beauty of these models makes me want to paint my current models in a more 90's nostalgia. Something that will pop on the field and just bring out the joy of what can be a bit of an over serious game. Thank you so much for the video!
Oh my that censored brush dip was great! Awesome work! Maybe some day I'll actually paint this 2E box set I have collecting dust. I would love to see more 2E stuff, I miss the fanciful character that 40k had back then. Not a huge fan of the hyper-realism of the modern day.
I'm going to get a set of miniatures next month. I've accepted the fact that my first painting will be poopoo, but that's part of it.
You’ll do great! My first marine was awful, but I kept him because he was my first. I’ve gotten to see my progress, and it’s quite encouraging. My other minis have to stare at their misshapen and clotted brother, and I get to see how my skills have grown. Looking forward to that for you!
We bought a housepaint recently for our bedroom and it smelled BANG ON like goblin green. I was 12 again, it was excellent.
Just the names of the old citadel colors really brings me back. I still remember seeing 40k models for the first time at a hobby store and instantly fell in love. I didn't even believe that models on the box could even be hand painted. It's been such a journey since then. I love this video, it made me remember my whole hobby adventure.
Oldhammer miniatures have a very special magic in their simplicity.
Please do more 2nd edition! I love oldschool painting videos. They make me want to get all my old metal minis painted up and used in a game!
As someone who is new to the hobby. Even I can appreciate how unique and cool the 90's art was. Very unique compared to a lot of things today although maybe not as "grimdark" it's a nice change of pace.
Sucn a cool style right?!
Oldhammer miniatures have a very special magic in their simplicity.
I wasn't aware of Warhammer back in the day, can someone explain to me why everyone loves Goblin Green so much?
Honestly, I don't really know. I guess goblin green was the colour we used to paint the base rims, particularly for WarhMmee Fantasy. At some point, that changed to black (and brown). It's reminiscent of an era, I suppose.
2 minutes in and we are already huffing paint
It's mad I recently helped my Dad clean out his attic and came across some of those old paint pots way past use but it was enough to make me think how cool it was for my Dad getting me into the hobby when I was a little nipper alright fell off in my early 20s and went down the wrong path a little but I thank getting back into hobby to help me get things back together.
The Power of Plastic!!
If any of them are still semi moist the can still be used. A small paint shaker and a rust-proof mixer ball and a little distilled water added will bring them back. They are pretty valuable.
Brings back some memories. I can almost smell those paints! Lol. My favourite army was Bretonnians with the Green Knight, King Louen at el.
They turned out great, especially the eldar! Would love to see even more like that!
"Welcome to the channel. Watch me huff paints!"
A full army in this style would be incredibly nostalgic. No crazy details or excessive technique, just clean basic colours, and it will look fantastic.
brilliant stuff... ive got a bunch of these old paints aswell as some glazes/washes , a few are the cylindrical tubs too (dont know if there earlier paints in the vid or later) , they were my brothers, he bought them but never got into the hobby.. yess they do hav a distinctive smell tht reminded me of painting my heroquest and original bloodbowl models......def more of this style content,,,im 14 again...even if its only until the effects of the paint vapours wear off
This was my first paint set and models, I think I was 12 when I got them for Christmas. this video brought back so many memories, thank you :)
Still have some of those old paints, they still work. Must be the lead 😂
Tasty lead!
Great job dude! This was like watching the process for how GW painters did it for the box art. :)
You talk about the smell of these old paints and I could vaguely remember it. It brought back memories of a ten year old me sitting at the dining room table slapping snakebite leather on rows of skaven warriors without a care in the world except for how well they would do against my friends' wood elves and empire.
My, how time flies.
Your videos are always so wholesome 😊 Thank you for taking me back in time! Enjoy your day!
They didn't have spray base coats back then, sorry should have hand base coated, do-over.
The smells always bring the past right back to me.
It is always best to smell the past!
More 2nd edition stuff? Id be more than happy with that :D Maybe a model from each faction?
I was amazed by static flock when I first saw it after years of basing with sawdust!
It was some high tech wizardry!
Please do continue your 2nd edition roll! I can't quite put my finger on it, but you have a certain touch about these things that I think really captures the spirit of the era.
On that note, thank you for making these videos. Warhammer didn't really have a significant presence in the small American flyover state I live in until around 40k 3rd ed, and we obviously didn't have the same level of sophistication the UK hobby scene had, so it really is a treat to be able witness all the stuff I missed, however vicariously it might be.
I still think of the hexagonal pots as 'new', as I grew up in the older round ones lol
Thank you , Broadsword .
Cheers Oli' just a FYI , I was painting minis in 1994 ! (still have ,and use the paints ) And it was no way as nostalgic (for me) as it was for you , I was painitng minis in 1974 !
My fist minis were Ral-Pather fantasy , a cave troll . In 74 we used enamil paints , ☺
🐺
Not another SMURF ! 😤
🐺
Sense of smell is the most closely linked to memory - especially emotional memory. I strongly remember the orange scented model glue from when I was younger!
This was the era I played 40K, the pre-internet days. I had no idea you were supposed to thin the paints, I just put it on neat 😅
It’s amazing they didn’t look even worse than they did!
I had enchanted blue and I fucking loved it. Made and enchanted blue Cadian force with white cloth. They were horrendous because I didn't know how to thin my paints.
paint sniffer.
I want to try out this style of painting on my idoneth deepkin models. But I'm afraid it wont be good because those models are far more detailed. Do you have some tips for that?
I would try and keep it simple. Don't overcomplicated or put too many colours on the model. Get your base coats on and take it from there. The Idonect models are lovely, but do have a lot of exposed skin, so make sure you find a colour that works for you (and is easy to replicate). :)
2:12 "It smells like... *sniff* smells liiiike... *taste*... like... lead. Oh." :D
💀
@@BroadswordWargaming
Jk ^^ Sry, couldn't skip it. :) Btw I miss those names too. :)
Sunburst yellow was the worst paint ever produced. I remember being very disapointed with it....
It's terrible and has zero coverage. Fun to play with again.. sort of.
Submit it for a golden demon next year
Suck this!
Being young sucks cause that means you are incompetant
3:15 that snakebite leather looks like caramel; please don't drink it though.
It tastes even better!
I love the Iyanden scheme. To me, it just screams "classic Eldar."
It really is. I'll be doing all of my old boys on that scheme 😀
Dude just huffing paints for the first quarter of the video...
Awesome video! Brought me right back to first and second edition 40K! It’s crazy how you managed to snag this paint set (and minis).
Honestly, slapping on paint and having fun playing minis should make a comeback. There are too many videos that drive everyone to paint every mini like it’s for a golden daemon. There’s beauty in fully painted armies on the tabletop.
I have that space marine
He's a good lad.
I’ve not painted them since I was a kid in this era… lovely bit of nostalgia cheers!
So vibrant and eye catching.
It's not just the game itself but the visual aspect that really drew me in.
Such wonderful times.
Not saying the newer designs are not eye catching, but I am speaking in terms of the 90s aesthetic.
i grew up in mexico, and there was a coffee shop that had a magazine section with white dwarf magazines, i would spend hours pouring over the models and dioramas
Some of us still do Goblin Green bases, like the stubborn old farts that we are.
There is no other colour for bases honestly.
Best comment. And true.
great video. loved it.
Cheers mate!
I love 2e's style... which is weird as I used to hateeee it back in the 90's.
But now, fantastic
Absolutely this. I have only recently started to genuinely love it.. must be getting old haha.
Great video and would be awesome to see some more 2nd edition, got to get my goblin green fix
Mithril Silver was and is still my favourite paint, I haven't found a silver I like more yet.
My snakebite leather did and does now small like Nurgle's undercarriage.
I have a box of GW Warhammer "Gobins" that I bought back about 1994.
Still in the box, still unpainted...!
I think right now is the golden age. The hobby is growing like never before and new models /lore nearly every week
I think you're probably right. It's a different time, for sure. Warhammer has never been bigger than it is now!
Great Paint job. The coverage on that yellow is fantastic. "Scowls over at Flashgitz Yellow"
I’ve forgotten how much citadel paint has improved down the years. I can remember trying to get a bright white on the High Elves from the 1st Warhammer box set
Should have flocked the sides. Just saying.
Furry flocked side bases! What madness is this!?
Umm, that's a bit too long sniffing paint friend
Give me that sweet smell of the 90s.
I still have some of these models. And paints. The bleached bone is still my favorite
I forgot about that paint.. I must hunt it down now. 😀
I use it to dry brush all the skulls on my Khorne models
I remember getting this set as a kid. It was already very old at that point, but I found it in the rulebook and asked my mum to get it. They found one rolling around in the back.
I haven't even watched it yet and i'm already deliriously happy...
Superb! I still have paints from that time that I still use to this day. What a great video, your face when you smelt the paints again... that's me every time I use them :)
Space marines T-Nids and eldar. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD TIME TO ME!
The smell of these paints takes me back to sitting at a little table in my grandparent's garden, painting Blood Bowl orcs.
I had that paint set. I was terrible but loved it
It's a terrible classic.
Just the SIGHT of those Citadel boxes gave me old school feels!! Lol...I am loving this video!
And my "First Models" were a bunch of metal and resin assortments given to me from my college roommate who got me into 40k...(3rd Edition..yes I am OldHammer...lol). He was a space wolves player...HOWEVER...HE HAD A BUNCH OF RAVEN GUARD PIECES AND MARINE BODIES...AND OF COURSE...MANY BEAKIE HELMETS AND AND STUDDED PAULDRONS TO SPARE!! 28 YEARS LATER..
MY RUclips NAME IS WHAT IT IS, AND MY RAVEN DADDY STILL HASN'T COME BACK FROM THE STORE IN THE EYE OF TERROR , WHERE HE SAID HE WAS GOING FOR SMOKES, BEER, AND LUCKIE CHARMS AND MILK... they may be magically delicious but everytime I see a box I get a tear that is only hidden due to my helmets eye lenses...For Corax Indeed..
"VICTORUS AUT MORTIS"
..HMMPH.... Should be
Lucky Charms or Death...
Wouldn't the Aquila on the bolter be yellow? Cool retro painting.
You know you've got to paint that army now!!
100%. I'm so excited about it too.
Had to add one more comment right after you said I don't know what these are going to smell like oh my God I forgot cuz those paints completely different viscosity completely different smells than what we're used to now could you imagine back then if we can see what it would turn into like with all the new sprues and all the ways of getting stuff off and all the clip Lee little B and all the new brushes and airbrushing head explodes LOL like you are right back then it was just about slapping on some paint and getting under the table as fast as possible to have some fun and throw some dice I am so just happy to be watching this video so that's it was my second comment I'm happy for it and I'm giggling as you are about to smell paint from the 90s cuz I'd be doing the same thing! LOL you're awesome man..
AND BEFORE I GO...
YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND...NOT ONLY DID YOU PAINT THE BOLT GUN UP A FANTASTIC "SURROUNDED BY ORCS AND READY TO LAY DOWN
SOME OF THE EMPORERS
1990s STYLE JUSTICE ", RED!! TRULY ICONIC!!!
AND THEN STRAIGHT TO THE ICONIC AND MOST USED BASE COLOR OF
THOSE HALYCON DAYS OF THE LONG LONG AGO...
GOBBO GREEN....
This whole video has just taken me on a roller coaster ride back to my youth man! I'm going to shut up now and watch the rest of it and leave the comments for other people but I just really wanted you to know thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this it made me some scribe! And I am going to be watching your channel because of the rest of your content like this this gives me Faith back in the funnest of the hobby that I missed and why I got into it in the first place
They look amazing, really enjoy seeing the old models done - even if it’s just for seeing it in a decent camera resolution! Don’t forget to be awesome 👍
I still have the first monopose Space Marine squad I painted back in 1993/94.
They have been repainted since, but they are dear to me. (I stopped playing/painting 15 years back)
My 3rd Edition DIY chapter used Blood red, Fiery Orange and the dark brown one that wasnt Snakebite leather (comparison search show me the "old paints" from 2010)
I also used flesh Wash over the models as a final weathering/varnish step.
If I remember things I’ve heard right, coat de arms has that or close to original citadel paint palette, whereas Vallejo game color would be the stuff from around early to mid 2000s.
So really as much as it wouldn’t be a full walk down nostalgia lane for you, you can buy pots of coat de arms if they’re still around and get the similar paint saturation for minis.
I’ve got a couple of the Citadel Colour Paint Set boxes in my stash that I bought new. One is untouched minus the brush which was snagged for use on the other. I know I’m old when I own(ed) a few of the real original Citadel paints in the round pots that predate the octagonal pots. The og boltgun metal still has some useable remnants after so long. Those pots sealed so well unlike every iteration following. In Australia in the late ‘80’s regular stock from GW/Citadel was not a thing so I started using Tamiya acrylic paints and some Humbrol enamels in the early days. Good times
Btw - smelling old acrylic pots is really the least risk from those days, we used to, and I still do, own hordes of lead minis and as a kid I probably absorbed my own weight in toxins them! 😂 Nothing wrong with eeemudkk#%&&🥴😵💫
More 2nd ed… My Space Wolves are ready 😂
Yes! You're on.
Just watched the @paintingphase interview awesome video and so is this just wanted to say was really sad when the question about Ciara and what we politely refer to as feedback was mentioned.... just wanted to say ignore the numptys. hope to get a flighr soon just for the crack living in grantham not that far away lol 10-20,quid om a flight barging bugger gw 😊😂😂😂😂
I think those Guardians were the first minis I painted as my own ones. It was also my first experience with the dreaded Metal-Plastic Hybrid mini with the optional Catapults, though in fairness the Guardians are one of the tamer ones of that sort. Still have them and a small army of 2nd ed eldar stuff to be salvaged someday....
I "converted" one of those Chaos Warriors for use as a Chaos Lord. IE I glued a Plasma Pistol onto it. The fact he was extremely short even beside 2002 era Marines is probably why he was so angry....
Plan to convert him into a Master of Executions or something similar. Cos, y'know, why should the Leagues hog all the angry shortarse energy?
when i was youmg i played space orks my friends played SPM and eldar just like this. BUT i belive GW never tought that people would paint bad plastic figures "realistic" we just played for fun.
Excellent video! I also recently acquired a 2nd edition Eldar army and I would love to see more videos of you painting up yours. Please keep the 2nd edition stuff coming. Cheers!
It's probably nostalgia but nothing captured my imagination like 2nd Edition 40K. The art work was Grimdark but the models were full on colourful and leapt off the table. Made it easy when actually gaming with the pieces!
This might seem like a bizarre question to ask since it seems rubbish by modern standards, but do you happen to have a link or at least a specific product name for the flock you used at the end? I'm trying to make some 6mm stuff and that old multi-coloured sawdust flock (which brings back memories) might actually do a good job at 1/300 scale of looking like little patches of wildflowers and weeds and stuff... But most of the stuff I've seen online these days is the foam flock that isn't as fine and doesn't have the same variety of colours, etc (or static grass or other basing materials).
