Painting Warhammer 40k Starter Sets like it's 1994. Using the classic Games Workshop paints, 90's Ultramarines and Orks get a retro paintjob. Nostalgia hits hard - using an Airbrush, contrast paints, Geek Gaming Basing material, I set the challenge to paint this entire box. Can it be done and still be fun?

Insane to think that my hand more than likely touched a few of these models when I worked in the factory that produced these things in my hometown back in the early to mid 90s, I was responsible for mixing the polymers, and most of GW stuff was high impact polystyrene, or HIPS for short, with a 25kg bag needing 500 grams of dove grey masterbatch for the colour, as well as lubricant powder to allow the moulds to fall out of the tooling properly, funny thing is, by then I had grown out of Warhammer and citadel minis, but we made 1000s of these every week, as well as the entire, albeit small range of plastic minis and vehicles!

Wow! The little 12 year old lad that still resides within the 45 year old husk was so joyful watching this. This was my original edition and those paint pots, man. I miss those! The orks had amazing facial features back then. Such a lovely nostalgic video and I welcome more like it. Great Work Oliver (and Josef!)

I can't believe this is rare now. I had a couple myself, it was sold in Argos and I was given yet another 1 by a younger kid down the street as he loved my GW stuff but he hated having to paint them. I sold almost everything 20 years ago. That was just before GW went worldwide and prices went up.

Great work! I feel so related to this, three years ago I finished painting all the models from this starter set. As a 43 year old who suffers from nostalgia fever, seeing someone else tackling the same painting project just made my day. So good you had your brother with you to share all those memories.

Fantastic. One detail I'd make is paint the soles of the Orc boots. It's a thick line and would help stop the boot being a monocolour blob. Black is an obvious safe choice, but metallic would have impact.

2nd Edition was my first box set, for Christmas 1994. I still have not painted all of the Gretchin. I have been going through all those old models and getting them ready to finally see some paint and man, there's a lot of Gretchin! (almost double the normal amount as my uncle was a binman at one time and rescued a 2nd Edition box from the Council dump, the models, books, pointy sticks, everything!!)

Dude, they really turned out well. Having been with you a few evenings, painting away it's now great to see the finished results on the retro terrain. 100% on the nostalgia scale. Even as as a Ultramarine painter the ORKs steal the show. They really pop. I know that you have the Wolves Codex as well, so no excuse, "For Russ and the Allfather!!"

This is an awesome spark of joy! Back in the days, I never managed to paint more than a space marines dark angel squad from this box. Nearly 30 years later, I still stick to the firsts. Please continue this serie, and I'll be very happy to see those terminators finished (I then jump to my 2nd Ed. Deatwing dudes that I started last week) keep up man

This is great! I remember my first time in my local hobby shop. This was the box set on offer and I went with a box of WH Fantasy High Elves. Wish I had kept pics of the paintjobs now to see how far I've come. Seeing some space wolves would be awesome, they're my current army collection and by far my largest so it'd be awesome to see where they came from. Also my first army were White Scars, but less said about that the better haha

It's weird seeing this edition again because that was the last and first 40k edition i ever played when i was about 15 or 16. I switched to warhammer fantasy after that and bloodbowl. I remember me and a friend both got this 40k boxset for christmas and i took my box to his house and gave him all my marines and he gave me all his gretchen and orks so we both had a decent sized army. Good times. The best.

Man the nostalgia from watching this was immense. 2nd Ed. was my introduction to 40K, pretty sure I still have my original Space Wolves army up in the attic somewhere, including the old models of Ragnar, Ulrik, Njal, and Bjorn. Think I'll be making my way up there this weekend 🙂

    • @alank1220

Oh man, those models are classic! I prefer the poses on the newer ones, but something about the Vitruvian Man pose of the older models (especially Njal) just brings back so many memories. My dad's step-brother got me into WH40K (he had this same boxed set, and collected Space Wolves), and it was the highlight of traveling interstate to see him.

Anyway, my marines are all from my own chapter, Delta Vindicators. Basically Ultramarines in desert camo instead of blue. I've still got 4 or 5 squads of the RTB-01 guys around, including 1 or 2 with the metal jump packs, and matching OG Rhino, Predator and flying broomstick land speeder.

Hey! It's never too late to get started 😀
I painted them white as it's a good. Basecoat for the yellow. Generally, yellow has pretty poor coverage, so it just looks green over most colours. Rather than doing ALOT of yellow layers, it can be easier to start with an off-white and build up from there.

This is the content I'm on RUclips for! 2nd edition is the best edition... especially for Space Orks

It's so weird to think I once owned this box, yet in the 90's I never had a full army, not even 1000 points, because I was a kid and kept on changing my mind. Almost got close with Dark Eldar, then stopped with anything model related until the past few years in my mid thirties and now I'm finally getting close to having an actual painted army

I would be interested in classic eldar please. Throw me back to the 90's.

Another brilliant trip down memory lane. It would be great to see the Space wolves painted up as they were my first Army, but opening pristine boxes maybe a step too far.

This is it !!! This is the one !!! This is the set which I skipped (like an idiot ) because I was more in to Fantasy than 40k at that point. I think they had probabably just ret-coned the Squats in 40K so falling back on fantasy was my big solution. I'm unlikely to ever come across a 90% complete 2nd Edition boxed set . I'm not that lucky and I'm unlikey to ever have the time or money to afford a proper antique like this and ebay prices or whatever you would charge for a aecond hand set is going to be far outside my price range. I live in hope though. 😊🙄
