Nice video. You'll be pleased to know we have re-worked the formula so it's not as thick but is smooth as silk and covers beautifully, including through an airbrush 😊
So are peeps who backed the original kickstarer going to get a bottle of these reworked white? I've also backed the second one so chuck one in there when you ship it eh?
My favorite way to do white is actually to start with the vallejo white, and instead of thinning it with water I thin it with liquitex white ink instead. Really gets the best out of both of them!
I'm a big fan of Vallejo and the Army Painter's white. Especially with a brush. Citadel's whites are like painting with concrete. I don't mind taking a little time to shake and mix any paint, but I don't want to have to struggle every time I want to use the paint. Especially as I only paint now and then and White Scar will solidify into mush between painting sessions and need all that time to blend back into a usable format. Easier just to give a Vallejo or the AP a short shake and get right into it.
The short version of "why is all white paint terrible" is that titanium white, the pigment used, is the kind of molecule that tangles into clumps easily. With a lot of grinding you can break these up, but that's one of the main things that makes paint cost more, so many companies don't bother. The other white pigment, zinc white, doesn't clump but is *very* transparent. Useful if you like glazing light colored skin, otherwise stick with titanium white.
@@mycatistypingthis5450 Oh for real? I always wondered why white always had that chalky look when dried. Hated it. But it makes sense that it’s, well, chalk.
I can really recommend any heavy body acrylic (titanium) white, e.g. from Schminke or Golden. They are so highly pigmented that you can thin them a lot and they still cover really well and stay smooth.
Emphatically seconded! Put a dollop on your wet palette, mine the bottom of it for thinned paint. Heavy body paints can't mechanically separate the way fluid paints can, so it stays as well mixed as it was in the factory.
I can only agree with this the Pimacryl or if you go for the cheaper academy white are fantastic. but if I paint not at home, I use the Army painter one as it is great as well.
100% Agreed. I've been using the same tube of Schminke Ti White for the past 4 years and it still looks full! So bright too, much brighter than any miniature company white paint.
I watched to see if Reaper would make it into the comparison. Reaper paints often get omitted from paint comparison videos. I would have loved to have seen Reaper MSP Pure White in the comparison to see how you guys think it stacks up.
I agree. I get it though that distribution gets in the way of access. Only so much you can do if you can't get your hands on the paint, but Reaper is definitely worth tracking down and throwing into the comparison.
White is a bit of an oddball for me. While I usually stick to Pro-Acryl (and the Bolt Titanium White is really good), I tend to prefer artist grade acrylics over miniature paint company products for white. Golden SoFlat is a fantastic white, but my favorite by far goes to Golden Heavy Body Acrylic. It's a giant tube you'll ever only need to buy 1 of, its a bit thick from the tube but thins like a dream and goes on silky smooth with great coverage and no streaking. I have not tried it through an airbrush as I just use Daler & Rowney FW or Liquitex white inks through the airbrush as they work wonderful.
Unfortunately you guys missed out on my personal favorite brand (both for quality and for their texan roots, because I'm a proud Texan): Reaper. For both price and quality, I've always been a fan of Reaper whites. They've a few, and my personal go to is Dragon White.
A comprehensive test line-up of white paint is just what the doctor ordered - good work all around. For myself, I admit I am a big believer in Duncan's tried-and-true color theory when it comes to white: base coat the model in off-white and use pure white for highlights. I find this relieves a lot of the frustration with white color schemes. There's a range of off-white and very light grey paints which at the very worst still go on more easily than most white paints.
I recently started to use AK Interactive Intense white. It seems to coat well right out of the bottle. For your video, did you thin it down? I might have missed it or forgotten about it if you mention it.
Liquitex inks are intended for airbrushes, spatter, or dripping into crevices. I wish you would have tried soft body acrylic, which would have been more comparable to the others in the list. The heavy body acrylic can be watered down and goes on super creamy. It's great for mixing.
You didn't cover War Colours white. I'm not sure that it would stand up to or be on par with some of the others, but the line, in my opinion, is at least as good as Scale 75. They definitely deserve to be in a comparison video. Still, a great video. Out of all the lines covered, I'm a fan of pro-acryl's white, but I feel like to get any good amount of coverage with white, you have to thin it to a wash and just resign yourself to doing five to seven coats.
Seconded. Warcolours is the literal smoothest white you will use. Warcolours are different to other paints (gel medium) but hot damn they NEVER separate and give smooth finishes when you know how to work them. 100% recommended for the aspiring paint nerd who wants a new toy.
You say that it is an ‘age old’ problem, that isn’t necessarily true. The issue was largely manufactured, with good reason, because the best, most opaque, white pigments were classed as harmful and banned. I’m in no way saying that the ban is a bad thing, quite the opposite, just pointing out that this is not an ‘age old’ problem because we used to have white paints that were opaque and covered well.
Could you do a video like this for yellows as well please? I've picked up a Tamiya flat white for my airbrush, but I'd like a good yellow to add to my arsenal too!
The Tamiya white is not going to stand up will with a brush but it will be probably the best of the bunch through an air brush, it can stand being thinned more without spidering, will flow better and give a less speckly finish, if you use laquer thinners it will be much more resilient too, just got to put up with the nasty laquer thinner smell and side effects if the ventilation isn't up to snuff (headaches)
Glad the Liquitex didn't disappoint. That's my go to for white at the moment. Slightly transparent but highly pigmented, it always goes on smooth. I've had a lot of issues with Army Painter Matte white, including a reactivation issue with Contrast paints over it.
Great tip thank you. I've struggled a lot with white as a scale model builder. Have been disappointed by some the best makes Vallejo, Ak and Humbrol. Army painter matt white sounds like worth a try.
P3 Menoth white is what I swear by but Liquitex white is good just got to get it in a tube not the ink. Generally though, yeah most white sucks without a lot of work.
I didn't see the Corax white demo, but the bottle was in your lineup. People seem to dislike Corax White, but I painted an entire WHFB High Elves army with Corax white and I thought it looked pretty good after 2 coats.
As with many of the RUclipsrs you have missed one of my favourite brands which is Reaper. I have heard of these referred to as Beginner paints which is a bit dismissive and as well as some nice sets they also use the Triad System. I even like the white. Give them a try if you haven't already.
My favorite white for miniatures (my favorite paint regardless of color) is Golden Paints. The Golden SoFlat white is amazing. The Fluid and High Flow Titanium White are really great. Plus, the Zinc White is great for adding opacity to a color without changing the color or desaturating it.
People really underestimate army painter. They’re not bad though. Their reds have left something to be desired, but allegedly their new line fixes some of those problems with coverage. But I really enjoy their greens and browns
Ak Interactive paints are great and their white is amazing. The problem with white paints are they are either too thin and don't cover enough or they are too thick and leave a grainy / uneven surface. It's very hard to get the perfect white paint consistency. Have to be really precise with the thinning. This is why AK interactive is the best white for me. There is no paint that will give you a smooth one coat coverage with white. So what's the next best thing? Two coats that give a bright white colour and doesn't need thinning. That's Ak interactive from my experience. For inks and airbrush - Liquitex titanium white ink.
my goto brands for white paint (both brush and airbrush): 1. Schmincke Aero titanium white 2. Schmincke Aero transparent white 3. Golden HiFlow Titanium White 4. AV 5. Liquitex the worst white paint I used: GW Ceramite White. Already chunky out of the pot... btw, you should compare acrylics both thinned by water and acrylic medium. Most brands don't deliver good results, when thinned with water. Water breaks paint into pigment and medium, while diluting. medium dilutes without breaking up the paint.
I use liquitex for my air brush and exclusively army painters matt white for brush work. It has amazing coverage, and doesn't build up texture. I know ap has a reputation as basically cheap craft paint in some circles. But give it a chance. amazing stuff
Army painter stuff is always very hit or miss. Some of their paints are absolutely amazing, but others, even from the same range/collection, can turn out to be utterly crap.
My personal favourite white is from Vallejo's model color white. It's quite matte and has a strong pigment. I only ever use it for highlights and a little glint in lenses. It does those jobs marvelously.
I know this video has been out for a while, but I hope you eventually do a black comparison; I'm surprised by the results for white and would like to also see if there are any outlier for blacks The consensus is vallejo model colour black as abbadon black is also widely regarded as lackluster, though not as much as Citadel's white paints
@wardaddyminiatures They've been really fun. It's been really nice to have an excuse to play with different products and brands, especially when I wouldn't normally try them!
I haven't used many brands, but the first white paint I used was the army painter. And I think that spoiled me cause I thought all white paint worked the same but boy was I wrong. The army painter white is the best I've used by far it thins easily and works great without thinning it too. For certain looks that is
might not have been a bad idea to crack open the paint pen and see how well the stuff inside goes on with a brush? maybe find out what they use and why it seams to work so well? Could be worth adding an empty reusable paint pen to the toolkit?
For me the pro acryl is the best one. I love scale75 but their white and black are not really good. Gsw is often the worst for me in all the color... But their white and yellow are soooooooooo bad. I use also golden titanium white when I want a thicker paint.
That's strange, regarding scale 75. It's my go to over the others. That is, until I discovered liquitex fluid basic acrylics. I was looking for a good white for airbrush and pick some up on a whim. It requires no thinning and little thinning for airbrush. Single coat coverage via brush. It surprised me a lot.

This german little potato says THANK YOU! Your review is super helpful after realizing the best paints for my project cost WAY too much/ aren't available in my corner of the world without ridiculous shipping fees. ;v; I think I'll try using Vallejo first, followed by The Army Painter. My budget is super low for now and those two are actually available in the shops I want to buy other stuff from.
I swear by ProAcryl. They’re not only Local for me, so bit pride for my state, but they’re just amazing paints all around, and I LOVE their metallics, and the finish those have.
White, the true test for a color range in my opinion. I go to the army painter for this one, that one is also easy available over here. The one paint in white I HATE, with a pasion is Apothecary White from GW. I love the contrast paints all of them, except this one. The contrast white is just a bad light gray whit poor coverage.
What about a 'review' of CONTRAST WHITE & A P's SPEED PAINT WHITE. Both turn out "Brand X" white or pale grey. Am I doing something wrong or are they REALLY, awful ????????
Pro acryl bottles grow old and annoying real fast. It's a problem they sell and then they sell alternate bottles as a solution. Also scalecolor isn't meant to be used that way, it's why no one really adds them to comp videos. scalecolor is the patient persons paint, in the hands of a normal painter it's crap, in the hands of an informed painter it's impressive. Things that are generally single pigment, and high on the matte scale are generally harder to just "use" without any knowledge of what you are working with. Especially true of scalecolour whose pigment is super thin, for an example, the metallic line from scale 75 is known as one of the best if not best because quite simply it can be thinned a surprising amount by water. But in the hands of someone who doesn't know that and just tries to roughly use it it can be a bit iffy. If you use a product that's meant to be used in 3 layers by just doing one layer and judge it as bad, it's not the paints fault. This for example is true of scales instant colors range which suck as a contrast paint but are exceptional as glazes in a bottle or for doing contrast over two or three layers. Yet people judge it for it's one coat potential and then call it crap.
I've been using Miniature Paints (the brand) for over 3 decades. I still have pots of paint on my table from 20+ years ago that still work perfectly fine. their white paint has never given me any issues and it thins down really well. i did try moving over to citadel colours in the early 90s and i was disappointed, i tried again the the mid 2000's and felt the same disappointment in their products. Army Painter seems to have some nice paints and i fined myself adding more and more of their ranges to my collection when i have the opportunity. I may try their white to see how it compares.
POSCA PENS TIP: Don't by the one with the brush tip, buy one with a classic marker nib. Those, after being shaked, you have to press their tips down, as if you were trying to push the tip inside the casing (don't worry, it comes back with an internal spring) when doing that the paint can get released, it can be messy for other purposes but is great for releasing the paint into a dry pallette, and it's super liquid, then with a brush you can move it to a wet pallette.
I'd be curious to know how these stack up with the new AP Fanatic paint. Personally I go for the Pro-Acryl, and I've got Broken Anvil but have yet to try the white paint on its own. P3 might be another interesting one once Steamforged does something with the line.
The reasons you didn't like the ink and the S75 are the reasons I do like them. But for different purposes. If I get a new paint line, I get white paint first. I want different properties in them. I regularly have multiple white paints on my palette at a time! ProAcryl Bold Titanium White or Golden SoFlat White are my bright opaque whites. My Daler Rowney White Ink is for lining and airbrushing - never for brush-on like this. It goes into the nooks and crannies like you saw, and perfectly. It can do lining and freehand work better than any other white paint. The Scale 75 Scale Color White and ProAcryl Transparent White are great for glazing. They have a nice consistency and low opacity which gives control over fine applications and smooth transitions. I adore them for this purpose. I'd never use them to base coat a figure, because I don't think that's what they are made for. The lack of coverage is a benefit in how I use them. And if I want to vary the properties.... I can mix white paint. And tint it with other hues.
The real test would have been the coverage of the white paint over the nail varnish, but she’d have to paint half of them with her left hand, which might skew the results. Maybe her toes?
Army painter white Vallejo model white FW White ink Pro Acryl Titanium white Ak Interactive titanium white Ak interactive 3rd Gen White Ink Winsor & Newton Proffessional White acrylic with alot of thinning required And liquited white ink. These should be everyones go to white acrylic paints
You shoukd have tried an artist's range big body acrylic like liquitex titanium white. Seriously, fuck all hobby color whites (except maybe VMC White).
For superior white paint use real lead white. It's worth the gruesome death that follows. Barring that use vallejo's game color PRIMER, not their model primer, and not their white, the game color primer 72.002.
Hmm, I feel like none of them were really that great. For white, I use the Stynlrez through an airbrush. Ink would probably be good also, but my Liquitex is all chunky. Not sure if that is a common occurrence. Interested in the Tamiyah, but you didn't mention if all of these are acrylic, are they? I would have included some rattle cans too or maybe another video? Vallejo has some rattle cans that have crazy nozzles. Honestly, the best white I ever used was ONE can of Games Workshop spray white, but each purchase of those cans is pretty random on quality. Maybe it's good, maybe they're not. I wouldn't use side help for the videos, because how can you really rate those when they were done by other people?
Paint markers!? Yes please. The paint kit we got has corax white but we usually just use that for drybrush. The vallejo paint looked great, so did Army Painter. May have to get a few of those brands next.
Spoiler alert 🚨 the only good white is wraithbone. Everyone says Vallejo and army painter, I think they’re high. Vallejo easily rubs off and is sticky and for someone like me that’s a HUGE no no. Army painter white is just as bad as white scar. Can we not pretend otherwise? I have found an easy, smooth, non sticky white is a base or priming of wraithbone, and then a drybrush of the other brighter crappier whites on top. Air brushing I have no idea, rattle can and brush for an old schooler like me so zero experience with air brush. I do assure you if you use my method you will not only be happy with the result but also impressed with how easy it is. One coat of wraithbone or prime it in wraithbone (I wish night and day that army painter white primer was as good as their other colors) cuz let’s be honest 25$ for a rattle can that lasts 20 models is sinful. Anyways I digress, one coat of wraithbone and any white will work great on top I guarantee it.
Nice video but you missed the Vallejo Model White and Scale75 Artist White. I got good results from both actually, the Scale75 has great coverage but dries really quickly so it's easy to get it to look chalky. You can get some more work time by thinning it with white ink instead of water. The Model white works similar to the Color one but is a bit thicker and more pigmented. Both dry pretty matte but I tend to varnish minis for gaming with satin varnish so it's not a problem for me.
"The liquitex ink doesn't have great coverage". That's because it's an ink. If I want some white to flow into crevices, I pick up an ink. If I want to paint something, I pick up a paint. Why do people not seem to understand or acknowledge the difference these days?
I can recommend Amsterdam acrylic White Ink for airbrushing (thinned), it comes in a 100ml bottle with a mixing ball inside, it's fairly economic and doesn't clump. I've used it for edge highlighting but not base coating and I think it's prone to chalkiness but again, I haven't base coated with it (The single worst is Ceramite White from Citadel which is the true horror paint, not White Scar). The best white isn't white. That's the thing. You can't go up from white, you can only reapply it after a wash or similar filter. Corax White is a neutral darker white (aka very light grey) which is smoother to work with and allows you to go up in brightness. It also clumps but I've added some vallejo thinner and a mixing ball which has kept it alive and well with no problems. The other 'white' is to go either cold or warm white, which means having a slight bit of blue or red/brown in it which changes the paint property and makes it easier to paint with. You can also use beige instead, in fact instead of applying 3-5 layers of white, you can use something like Rakarth Flesh as an in-between single layer and it doesn't have to be full opaque coverage, it only has to make the transition easier. Alternatively if you need to go from black to white, you can use zandi dust as the in-between. Another trick is to use less layers of white and then use a grey, red or blue wash (like the new citadel shades) all over, then apply a single layer of white where you want to build it up again. That way the recesses won't have an inconsistent white color but look properly shaded. So to anyone looking for *THE* magic white paint out there, it doesn't exist. A rattlecan or patient airbrushing is the only way to get a consistent, opaque and flat layer and even then, you *need* to repaint it with something else to get a repair color for when you make mistakes. Don't paint a white army. There's a reason ultramarines are the standard.
Nice video. You'll be pleased to know we have re-worked the formula so it's not as thick but is smooth as silk and covers beautifully, including through an airbrush 😊

My favorite white for miniatures (my favorite paint regardless of color) is Golden Paints. The Golden SoFlat white is amazing. The Fluid and High Flow Titanium White are really great. Plus, the Zinc White is great for adding opacity to a color without changing the color or desaturating it.
I recently purchased armypainter mat white and was shocked at how good it was, I wasn't expecting much from it but it's now my favourite
For inks and airbrush - Liquitex titanium white ink.
is the "new" game color white better than the old? i got a pot of the old and i'm not particularly happy white it...
I honestly like the new, yeah. I avoided stocking the old stuff in the store for that very reason. :)
my goto brands for white paint (both brush and airbrush):
1. Schmincke Aero titanium white
2. Schmincke Aero transparent white
3. Golden HiFlow Titanium White
4. AV
5. Liquitex
the worst white paint I used:
GW Ceramite White. Already chunky out of the pot...
btw, you should compare acrylics both thinned by water and acrylic medium. Most brands don't deliver good results, when thinned with water. Water breaks paint into pigment and medium, while diluting. medium dilutes without breaking up the paint.
Army painter white I found to be surprisingly good & is a solid choice.
GW white I hate with a passion, never got a good coat/finish from it.
Great video, do black next. Then yellow....
I do general art as a hobby so have a bunch of POSCA markers already, handy to know they could be used for edges and such.
Should def this tamiya with x20a thinner 60/40. They brush paint amazingly once you get the thinning down.
Oh nice, I'll have to take a look. Thanks! 😀
The best advice I can give for white is to thin your white paint with white ink.
I use Vallejo white with Liquitex white ink.
I know this video has been out for a while, but I hope you eventually do a black comparison; I'm surprised by the results for white and would like to also see if there are any outlier for blacks
The consensus is vallejo model colour black as abbadon black is also widely regarded as lackluster, though not as much as Citadel's white paints
Good vid guys!
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah Been enjoying the comparison vids lately 👍
@wardaddyminiatures They've been really fun. It's been really nice to have an excuse to play with different products and brands, especially when I wouldn't normally try them!
I haven't used many brands, but the first white paint I used was the army painter. And I think that spoiled me cause I thought all white paint worked the same but boy was I wrong. The army painter white is the best I've used by far it thins easily and works great without thinning it too. For certain looks that is
Great stuff. Love seeing/hearing you guys team up. Yellow next?
Another option for the contest is AK's white ink, works really well, specially with airbrush. Thanks for the comparative.
might not have been a bad idea to crack open the paint pen and see how well the stuff inside goes on with a brush? maybe find out what they use and why it seams to work so well?
Could be worth adding an empty reusable paint pen to the toolkit?
The tube probably cracked when Ciara threw it away and if not, definitely when someone trod on it afterwards.
The Golden SoFlat white has been very good to me lately, but as far as hobby brands are concerned Pro Acryl is my favorite.
For me the pro acryl is the best one.
I love scale75 but their white and black are not really good.
Gsw is often the worst for me in all the color... But their white and yellow are soooooooooo bad.
I use also golden titanium white when I want a thicker paint.
Love the little head bob during the Scalecolor airbrush segment.
Schmincke (both the PRIMAcryl and the Aero Color) along with the W&N mixing white are my two best options for white colour schemes.

This german little potato says THANK YOU! Your review is super helpful after realizing the best paints for my project cost WAY too much/ aren't available in my corner of the world without ridiculous shipping fees. ;v;
I think I'll try using Vallejo first, followed by The Army Painter.
My budget is super low for now and those two are actually available in the shops I want to buy other stuff from.
As a brand new painter, the army painter white through an airbrush gave me exactly what I wanted!
"No-one's painting minis with a marker."
Oh, yeah, absolutely no-one. [FRANTICALLY HIDES MY POSCA COLLECTION]
now compare with oil paints!!
The contrast white is just a bad light gray whit poor coverage.
you guys need to try molotow all4one
Thank you , Broadswoard .
🐺
My go to white is ulthuan grey.
What about a 'review' of CONTRAST WHITE & A P's SPEED PAINT WHITE. Both turn out "Brand X" white or pale grey. Am I doing something wrong or are they REALLY, awful ????????
Thanks love y'all keep it up. I do love pro acryl personally. Love the red nails contrasting the white haha.
Thanks for the awesome informative video redhead mc painty pants. I'll keep calling you that, it's easier for me
In Vallejo we trust xD
I'm shocked you didn't have Corax White from Citadel. But I've never had a bottle that wasn't nothing put hardened pigment lol
Great stuff friends 👏 👍
Those red nails are on point tho frfr
🔥
The real test would have been the coverage of the white paint over the nail varnish, but she’d have to paint half of them with her left hand, which might skew the results. Maybe her toes?
Would be nice to get a price per volumen comparison :)
Thought about this but it depends where you are. Vallejo is very cheap here in Ireland compared to the US
For which area if the world? Price and availability swing drastically.
Well… since you are based in Ireland/EU I would start with that
My favorite so far has been ProAcryl Titanium White.
Army painter white
Vallejo model white
FW White ink
Pro Acryl Titanium white
Ak Interactive titanium white
Ak interactive 3rd Gen White Ink
Winsor & Newton Proffessional White acrylic with alot of thinning required
And liquited white ink. These should be everyones go to white acrylic paints
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
Golden Hi Flow Titanium White > Liquitex Titanium white for airbrushing. Cheaper, no titanium chunks and perfect consistency out of the bottle.
