"that's my first landing in a glider"...(and now my second, and my third, and my fourth...) ;D
🤣🤣🤣 I'm totally pinning this comment
🤣😂
I'm glad to see the system running this so well Steve! I bet it looks unreal in headset.
Great video Steve. I can't comprehend how beautiful this must have been. I take great comfort in knowing that in just a few years from now, this experience will be available for the more average user as well, as both the 4090 and the Varjo eventually will come down in price.
Just a few tips from a glider pilot: During takeoff, try to get into the air as soon as possible, staying no higher than 1 meter. This reduces the drag for the tow, and both get airborne sooner, which increases safety margins as well. During the tow, if you all of a sudden realize that you have drifted to one side, never use counter control, just ease off the control you're already on. This way you prevent a classic P.I.O. (Pilot Induced Oscillation). 4:35 would have been nighty-night for that line. And before a line release, the glider pilot normally goes up above the tow plane, effectively lifting its tail a bit. This will let the tow pilot know when you're ready. After release, the tow plane normally banks right and down, while you go left and up to make sure you have line separation.
Also, during the tow, try to stay slightly above the tow plane, enough that you can see the top of its tail rudder. And yes, flying gliders IS challenging. And you always get just one shot at the landing as well. No go around in that game. No wonder glider pilots are the best pilots. Not even joking. Looking forward to more videos from you, using this insane machine. Take care Buddy!
Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing the tips!
@@pertsonvelts1699 👍👍
You were making things difficult for yourself in the take-off run. Let the glider lift off as soon as it wants to, and then just hold it just above the runway while the tug picks up speed. That will make life much easier for you. You should be airborne long before the tug. You should only hear that wheel rumble for a few seconds after you start to move.
Hi Peter, to be honest I wasn't really focusing on flying perfect, this video aimed to illustrate the brute force of the 4090 paired with the Aero. But thanks anyway for the tips 👍
@@VRFlightSimGuy Well, with that edge-to-edge clarity which you described - very unlike my G2 - you'll get a nice impression of speed, flying just a couple of feet above the ground until the tug starts to climb away. It's a fun part of a real aerotow.
@@peterfagan3587 I'd certainly love to try it in real life one day.
It even looked good on RUclips in 1080p on my 50+" display. After what you described in performance, I'd be buying and keeping that machine too, LOL! Now you need a streaming program that removes the shakes in VR. It's strange that no one sees the jitters while in VR but when streamed it does that 🤔🤔I'm going to go back to Austria tonight now after seeing this. Almost forgot how beautiful it was there. With all the terrain updates, it should look nice!
I know what you’re saying about the pixel density, I had a demo of the Varjo XR3 at work and that was achieving 75px density. It’s simply stunning. I’ve never seen VR so crisp as with the Varjo headsets. It’s deffo true that they say it’s human eye resolution ❤
Isn't it just. I'll have a video showing this headset on the channel soon
@@VRFlightSimGuy yeh we could see the individual stitches on a steering wheel as clear as if it were real 😮
The fact that the Varjo Aero at 39PPD looks as good as a 4K monitor is very encouraging! I'm holding out for the Pimax 12K QLED and I hope... I mean I _really_ hope... it's gonna look as crisp as a 4K monitor!
It's hard to put into words just how sharp it looks! It will be very interesting to see if Pimax can deliver. But I'm not sure even a 4090 will be able to handle 12K!
I think 12k is a total waste of resources. The only thing a 12k might be great for is the ultra wide fov. The double in pixels will hopefully help keep the ppd up over that wide fov.
@@sirgriffinman The Pimax 12K QLED will have the same 200* FOV that the Pimax 8KX currently has. The advantage of having two 6K panels (the 12K QLED) Vs. two 4K panels (the 8KX) is indeed the pixel density and not the FOV! :-) And keep in mind, with respect to FOV, it's not _just_ the side-to-side view that's extended, the top-to-bottom FOV is much greater as well!
@@crouchjump5787 >>>> "They won’t ever solve the clarity issues by throwing pixels on the wall no GPU can render."
It's a very good place to start though IMHO. And it's not just the PPD that helps with clarity -- those new aspherical lenses are a HUGE factor, and they place _NO_ burden on the GPU at all! The Varjo Aero seems to have 'solved' the clarity issue along with possibly the Pimax Crystal and maybe one or two others, but none of them have the wide FOV that the Pimax has. The Pimax 12K QLED has 50% more pixels than the 8KX has for the same FOV, and might bring a 3090 to it's knees with Ultra settings in Flight Simulator, but I think the 12K QLED will do _just fine_ with a 4090. In other words, with respect to FPS, when the 12K QLED is paired with a 4090, I suspect it will perform about the same as an 8KX when paired with a 3090 (at least that's what the math looks like to *me* anyway)! Exciting times -- we're just gonna have to wait and see!
Man I'm jealous a 4090 and the Varjo Aero must be an awesome experience. I really hope prices will come down some day in the not too distant future to enable some more people an experience like this. Now my 3090 fe feels really old (which I was lucky to get cause I could sell my 3080 on the peak of GPU prices while I got myself both the 3080 and 3090 at MSRP). Well one day ... One day
This looks awesome! Can't afford a setup like that though, so it'll be the stuff of dreams for mefor now. However with DLSS I had a pretty awesome flight yesterday in the LS18 from Bled (which used to be the main airport in Condor Soaring, so it was fun to see how it compared to the MSFS version) to -coincidentally- Innsbruck. Evenwith my I5 , 2070 and HP reverb 2 V2 it was an amazing experience1 Pretty smooth and just pure joy :) I will of course need some kind of upgrade at some point, but I feel I'm fine for now :)
Hey Payt that's fantastic! You really do not need the latest and greatest to enjoy this amazing simulator :)
New Stormforce ordered, thanks for showing us the power of this new beast!. 👌🏼👍🏼
Woah well played sir! You're gonna LOVE it.
Looks amazing. Can you do the same on DCS in somewhere super taxing? You're basically demo'ing my dream system.
DCS is on my to show list for sure
You push the Aero very well with the card.
Good to see performance without DLSS. I see you said you could read all the dials there, you probably wouldn't be able to read them with DLSS on. I bought a 4080 myself, but probably not going to get anywhere near a 13900/4090 performance. But again I am only having to push an old Rift-S headset!
You could put the camera inside the headset to see how clear of is
I just bought a similar system with 6000 mhz dRam at 39ppd in Fenix. Absolutely blown away. It is simply incredible !
Thanks for the review of a GPU & VR Headset a majority of us can't afford maybe one day when it becomes more affordable .
Thanks! I’m very curious if you’re running into CPU or GPU limits. The developer mode counter shows that, and would be great when you look at airliners and cities!
You must be super excited Steve, I’ve never heard you swear so much in a video. Aero, super powerful PC How much would all this cost for somebody who wants this clarity. I do like to see you flying more away from all the techno stuff sometimes. Some more aircraft reviews would be brilliant. Mav
@@caiazzo123 Cheers Mav. I've never been so impressed by a new PC, it's phenomenal. This system is about 3800 with my Discount code. New aircraft reviews are coming.
@@VRFlightSimGuy Tommy?
@@VRFlightSimGuy your 4090 pc was 3800 completely ready to go?
I guess without Varjo aero which sends the budget sky high together!!!
If I was the Varjo CEO talking to engineers in a pitch meeting, I'd be like I'm sorry you must get it to 42 ppd to release.
I was running the Aero at 35ppd on a 3090. I thought that was great. Everything looked really nice.
I bought a 4090 and set the ppd to 39. Wow,,, Even things in the distance are a lot clearer now.
I mostly sim race but dabble in Flight Sim.
That's because you actually need to set it to 39PPD to get a true 35PPD in MSFS, before, you were experiencing around 27PPD. Thanks for watching.
Very nice, i recently tried a Reverb G2 and in the end I sent it back as i just could not read the instruments easily. I look forward to maybe one day getting the Aero/4090 as it seems you can read displays ok in it? Pity it does not have built-in audio as that was stunning on the G2.
CLEAR! Listen to what dude says. He’s not lying. And how do I know? I got one on a weaker 10900k/4090 set up and 39ppd is what he says it is.
G2 has come a long way with all the updated software and a 4090. You can't go wrong. the Aero doesn't even have ear speakers from what I'm told. and it burns the imagine into the little mini screens of the headset if left unattended and not turned off (plenty of documentation on that out there - I believe they have to be sent back to Helsinki (correct me if I'm wrong)).
I might decide to rebuild my PC, have an ITX case and all the 40 series cards are too large for my case. Appreciate the video.
Gliding in the Alps using the maximum 39PPD setting in the Varjo Aero, thanks to the new "VR slayer" RTX 4090 😱
On the one hand it’s so tempting, on the other hand it’s *just* below the level where you wouldn’t be tempted with a 5090 when that comes out!
@@richdyer2000 But then you might as well wait for the 6090 ;)
you hyped me so much i bought a 4090 today and damn you're right its excellent :)
omg congrats buddy! It's a new dawn of VR performance without a doubt.
Nice. Thanks for the video.
Much appreciated cheers 👍
Thank you for the video, Steve. 50 fps with a glider it’s 👍, but now, the question is: How many fps with 39 PPD for the Fenix A320 or 737 Pmdg 😜?
146 professional gives similar results, although I don't have the pmdg or Fenix sorry!
@@VRFlightSimGuy Yeah I know Steve, I’m joking 🙃. Thank you again for everything you do for the VR sim community 👍
I have the same system as Steve’s including the Varjo Aero. I do fly at 39ppd and I’m an airliner only. I love to fly over major cities and alas, this hardware with the latest updated software makes flying so real, even airline pilot friends of mine are stunned. I get 50fps in the PMDG and Fenix over NYC and Chicago and Miami and LA using DLSS with mostly Ultra Settings and without the toolkit. But what has really impressed me the most now is the latest release of the ButtKicker software dropping Andre’s SimShaker for Aviators and utilizing the latest release of HaptiConnect. That just takes the experience to an extreme
Wow, amazing! But the cost to upgrade to a 4090 is not only the graphics card at $2,500cdn, but many would require a new MB, new memory, new power unit, and possibly a new case too! That’s about $4,000+ For a more immersive experience I ordered the Yaw2 motion simulation chair at about half that cost. My i9-12900/3080/G2 is very adequate.
Congrats!
Amazing, great video - thank you! I was wondering about that exact thing.
I recently got a Reverb G2 based on your videos of it, and am loving it. I was thinking - what should the next-gen "G3" look like - my thoughts would be pancake lenses + wireless PC support through a dongle. I'd be fine with a long, thin USB C charging cable to avoid the battery weight/complication. I love the G2 but that super thick cable and it's not very bendy, and why did they have to give it the grippiest rubber casing 😅. And if they were making a G3, then higher resolution or PPD would be nice to completely eliminate that screen door, now that we have the likes of the 4090 to drive it.
I want to get an Aero, but the lighthouse tracking + knuckles controllers really adds to the cost. Thoughts?
I have a Reverb G2 and upgraded to a Quest Pro. It's crazy how much better it is. Turns out that lenses and display quality matter a lot more than we thought. Compared to the G2 the Quest Pro has a significantly larger FOV, brighter display, much better colours, contrasts and blacks and lenses that are so superb you have to see them to believe them. You can look over the entire visual field and its crisp, clear and in focus.
I can tell you I would never use a fresnel based headset ever again. I've not used an Aero but with aspheric lenses and a super high resolution I would definitely consider either a Quest Pro or an Aero if you have a 4090 system.
If you google Lukas Wolta on RUclips he did two excellent reviews on both the Quest Pro and Varjo Aero. He's a VR graphics design professional and his breakdowns are the most technical I've seen. Well worth a watch.
But in short, I've had both Rifts, both Quests, a Vive Pro 2 and a Reverb G2, and if I had to go back to any of them after the last five weeks or so with the Quest Pro, I'd probably just stop using VR. If you have the money, definitely move on to a non fresnel headset.
This PPD has to be crazy to experience. I've still just got my quest 2 and my 3070 laptop. I wanted to build a PC but the new 4090 and 4080 are so much money, and I can't even get any in stock either way. I'm hoping dynamic Foveated Rendering can help my system keep up with future headsets, I've had my eye on the pimax Crystal but they haven't even shown any of the units yet. Have you heard anything from pimax about the crystal by any chance?
It's really hard to describe how amazing it feels! I'm waiting for Pimax to send me a review unit, as I cannot attend any of the roadshow events
Hi Steve, I've always wondered how the various manufacturers come up with their wonderful PPD numbers.
The Aero's specs at Varjo's website says 2880x2720/eye displays and 134 degrees FOV.
Simple math says 2880/134=21.5 PPD.
At the claimed 35 PPD, the FOV would be 2880/35=82 degrees
At the claimed 39 PPD, the FOV would be 2880/39=74 degrees
Since you have good contacts at Varjo and Pimax etc..., maybe you could ask them to elaborate on how they come up with their PPD claims?
They measure diagonally!
After watching the video you should look up a color correction video and pull that color correction photo into flight sim with a pdf viewer something so that the pic is affected by the flight sim color system then use openxr toolkit and adjust it to just black and white use the color correction pictures to get black level set correctly and then go set color and saturation it will make so much of a difference you'll do a video on it.
Please come fly with the SSC discord group we have weekly flights on Saturday there were 20+ pilots on last time we would be happy to have you.
Hello great video as always, can you make another video about the DCS game settings and openxr toolkit with 4090 in the future. Would be awesome. Thanks keep it up
This is great Steve! And than realize that motion prediction is on its way...
I also experience that at present TAA gives the sharpest images. I'm very curious if DLSS will improve over time.
Exactly that, also, I have hoped DLSS 3 will make its way over to VR. Very exciting times ahead.
@@VRFlightSimGuy But with Varjo Motion Reprojection Aero owners probably won't need DLSS 3 anymore.
I think they are working on improving DLSS in MSFS so that it renders screens in the cockpit at full resolution, while using DLSS everywhere else, so you get a better framerate but still maintain nice looking screens
@@jimmy8x541 I’m sorry but I don’t quite get what you try to explain. I was only referring to generating extra frames in VR by means of DLSS 3 which will in my opinion never make it due to latency issues. I understand that Varjo motion reprojection could successfully deliver these extra frames instead.
@@NowIsGold Both use synthetic frames so it's not even an option even if theoretically it could work, it would look absolutely terrible. It'll be a choice of DLSS 3 or Varjo Motion Reprojection but not both. It seems though from Steves visit to the Varjo studios that there motion reprojection will do very nicely!
Hi, could you confirm the configuration? you used OpenXR toolkit? How it was setuped? Which NVidia drivers? I have the same configuration and connot repodure your results. Other titles working like a charm but MSFS not. My results with 39 and ULTRA SETTINGS are 24-30 fps and not so const as on your video. What app you are using to overlay the FPS coutner?
Apreciate for more detalis.
OK, I crack it out. Setting up room VR in steem VR again solved the problem. Dont ask why but it did the job. I just ride my copter over the NewYork in 50FPS totaly maxed out ULTRA and 39PPD. AWSOME!!! AWSOME!!!! woooowowowowow!!!! Woooo... I can describe it... No words...
Hi Zutan, I too have the same issue as you, but I’m still struggling to achieve the clarity of this video. Would love a screenshot of the configuration of the settings page in msfs and the nvidia settings page… or a link to the video that shows maxed settings 👍
I hope you will be able to do a review of DCS with the 8KX with this system - thank you
It's on the list 👍
I'm waiting for the Pimax crystal now, 42ppd announced
Hi Steve, great video indeed - I know you're not a huge airliner fan but would be interesting to see some VR action in an airliner such as the PMDG/Fenix. With all those displays/high res textures would be interesting to see the performance.
Awesome Steve
Thanks mate 😊
I just spent $1600 for a 4090 and now another $2k for an Aero? I’m tempted! Thanks again for another great video!
My pleasure Brian. Let me know what you decide!
If you already got a 4090, anything less than Aero is not fair match:)
Do it do it do it
You know what. I am still on the reverb g1 but it runs so great and looks so great that i gona wait to see what headset to buy next. I only simracing and the g1 runs so good now with 4090
Looking awesome! ...
Does one need to buy the base stations as well with the Varjo?... i see they are an extra couple of hundred pounds on top of the vr unit itself ,which is €1,990 on the Varjo website 😳😬 .
Perhaps the base stations are not a necessity? Only the unit and hand controllers?
Awesome - you're getting a 3070, just like mine! That's great news mate (from my very subjective point of view)!!!
Thanks for watching until the end 🙂
@@VRFlightSimGuy Edge of your seat stuff mate!!
Amazing!!
Oh no looks like I need to trade in my 3090 for a 4090 now, it’s never ending! 😂 As an aside Steve, do you get reflections in the aero, specifically the flat edges of the lenses at the nose reflecting parts of the screen and visible in your inner peripheral vision?
Depending on your PC and current CPU you might be better off buying a whole new build. I used Steve's code for Stormforce (got me a £205 discount) and ordered the same system Steve has here for £3895. As the 4090 is £2000 on its own you might as well go all the way and get the full fat experience then sell your old PC, that's what I'm doing.
It certainly is never ending. Always chasing pixels, lol! I just got the 4090 and now I want the Aero.
Hey Peter, I can't say I've ever noticed that. The Aspheric lenses are glare free.
@@kevinbrook7033 yep, totally agree, if you’re going to do it go for the complete system upgrade.
@@VRFlightSimGuy cheers Steve. EDIT I’ve found I’ve probably been wearing the headset too high, the reflections disappear if I wear it lower. Happy days.
Happy for you you can have a 4090 and a Vargo Aero but it is not the case for 99% of your audience. I don’t think I will lean that much with you anymore so have fun with your great hardware.
I guess you didn't watch until the end
@@VRFlightSimGuy lmao I was thinking the exact same thing, I also have a 4090....but you CLEARLY stated that you're selling your previous 3090 to buy a 3070 specifically for the purpose of having a system to be able to still make settings videos.

Why only record in 1080?
Any idea how to get rid of constant mountain mesh morphing and texture changes, even within 200m distance and looking straigth to it?
Are you cpu bound? im not sure if you are always with the 13900k but if your cpu bound DLSS doesnt have an effect from what ive seen with my 5900x. It works well to bring up an underperforming GPU.
I use open xr vr with my 4090 to get rid of that nasty shaking that your experiencing
Silly idea but it would be funny to have the f18 in full afterburner towing the glider😁 thank you for another video. Peace✌ i just had a real question. What is the cpu and gpu usage? My 8700k spikes to 100percent when i look around too fast. How is the 13900k doing?
LOL Tom. GPU usage varies but can often be around 70-90%. The 13900K whilst helping, isn't doing that much here (at a guess)
Correct me if I am wrong but 2880 x 2720 is not quite 4K that’s per eye but you can’t add those together. Refresh wise is this headset capable of 90hz total or per eye ?
Looks great! You must be a 'Real Sim Pilot'.. :-).
Thanks. More like a sim nut job 😅
What is the ppd you normally use on the Varjo?
varjo aero or quest pro? Which one is the best?
Varjo Aero without question.
Hey everyone! I can choose 39PPD on Varjo Base before I go into VR in MSFS 2020 and while on a flight in VR, I then use ALT/Tab to go out and check the Varjo Base, the PPD is then switched back to 35 PPD!?!? Am I missing something? I have tried with with/without OpenXR toolkit... Any help would appreciated. Thx.
Nice video can you tell me what you bind to get the extirior shot in VR. Just got an Alienware R13 with 3090 going to have to see if I can upgrade it too the 4090
Thanks Phil. I can't remember off hand sorry it's been so long since I setup my controls
Not sure why this vid was suggested to me but I can give completely unbiased advice. This video is super high quality but my god the constant shaking makes it unwatchable, it's like your playing sat on a paintcan shaker.
Are you using open XR toolkit?
G2 v2 test to 🎉
Sorry for the slightly off-topic question... I don't follow the development of Varjo Aero closely, so I have a question, does this set work with VR controllers (are they included?) and can they be used in VR (instead of a mouse)???
Hi Tombul. The Varjo Aero headset does not work on its own. It uses the Steam Lighthouse tracking system, so you can pair up with any Steam Lighthouse controllers but both the Lighthouse system and controllers will need to be purchased separately.
So here is a question for you Steve: buy a 4090 OR a Varjo Aero, since it has foveated rendering? I’m on a 3080 right now.
That's a hard question, but I'd say buy the Aero. Motion Prediction is coming which will greatly help out.
That was my intuition. Especially that going to the 4090, I need to change the case and power supply. My CPU is also not probably up to the task (5600x) so that potentially means new CPU, MOBO and RAM. That’s a lot of $$$!
That's it! It's all your fault Steve!! I just squandered £1459 on a Z790, i9-13900K and 64GB DDR5 memory to upgrade my PC from the i9-10900 to fuel my 4090FE.........You're a BAD influence! Thanks so much for making life worth while! 😉
Woah Mark congratulations 🤩🎉
why don't you use the stabilization of the Varjo Aero?
I didn't realise it has it? Please tell me how?
I an surprised that 4090 brings such huge improvement over 3090. Almost 100%. I am running with the same setting with 3090 and can only get 25fps in TAA, which is too low even for me. So I use DLSS quality that brings it to 35-40fps in the same area in the same glider which I am flying right now. DlLSS sacrifices the cockpit clarity a bit, but I can live with it for now until I feel I can justify a uplift to 4090…
what about the foveated rendering? does it work in msfs?
LOL! 4k resolution in the Varjo Aero didnt make you a good pilot :) LOL! Just kidding! Love your videos!

Would you go as far as to say the Varjo at 39PPD looks the same or better than what you would see on a 1080p monitor?

Sailplane are not the same as Airplanes.... you need to learn how to pilot them if you don't want to die... Virtually that is...
That shaky image makes this unwatchable.
Thanks for the comment, I guess you are new here 🤣
I will wait 4 more years until we can play this at 90 fps
I already can..this is using extreme settings 👍
@@VRFlightSimGuy Extreme or nothing 😀
I'll see you in a few more years when we have the 6090 then ;)
I’m telling y’all, I’m a broke boy who shelled out $2445 for a 4090 and $2139 for an Aero. 39ppd is exactly what vr flight sim guy says. 0 buyer’s remorse here. It’s not a sim but check out half life alyx
Star Wars squadrons is another good one
Again, default aircraft
JF 146 rocks too. It really makes no difference which aircraft with this system..

Why Steve? Why? Why do you hate my credit rating so much? 😪

Let me think about: why don't we all Drive a Ferrari? It's a great car. .....
Well there is a slight difference between 4k and 400k....just sayin...
Ill drop $3000aud on a graphics card when it can do this…at 90fps.
I guess you missed my raw impressions video ;)
