I would not had thought a 6800 XT is that competent at wireless VR, but fps, clarity and frametimes are top notch. RDNA2 drivers have come a looong way. Steve, thank you for another great comparison video. I bought the Varjo Aero years ago after watching your review, also with the Pimax Crystal. I just ordered the Somnium VR1 with eye tracking. You have been spot on with your reviews and that makes it easier to make decisions about purchases. The sound isn't an issue for me because I use Steel Series Arena 7 gaming speakers behind my DOF. I like hearing the monster base it makes when the engines spool up!!
IL-2 and DCS user here. I just upgraded to a Q3 (running a link-cable, of course) from a Reverb G2 and I couldn't be happier. Not only is the picture quality/clarity way better, there's also none of that "tiny sweetspot"-stuff going on with the Q3. So nice to be able to simply glance down at your instruments instead of having to tilt your entire head down to read those dials. Plus - and this really surprised me - my games run *so* much better now. I was using OpenComposite/OpenXR on the G2 already and still use it on the Q3, but I didn't change any other hardware. i7-14700KF, 32 GB of 3600 DDR4 and a 4070 Super ... and I'm getting rock solid 90 FPS in IL-2 in missions that would've made my G2 stutter down to 70 or 75 FPS in busy scenes. And that's in 90 Hz, at 1.4x resolution in the Oculus app with no NIS/FSR-nonsense in OpenXR Toolkit (just the CAS filter) *and* with higher in-game settings than I could run before. I even tried 120 Hz but at 1.2x resolution and that too ran very smoothly and at a constant 120 FPS. Haven't done much in DCS yet, but I did try an A-10 training mission on 90 Hz with just the stock "VR" preset selected and it too ran a constant 90 FPS. So far, I'm very impressed with this set - especially considering its price.
Wait to you go from a Reverb 2 to a Q3 and then to a Pimax Crystal like I did for IL-2. As good as the Q3 is, you'll never go back to it after the Pimax.

It was like looking at a 1440p or even 4k monitor - but in a VR environment. Problem is: 1700 EUR + another 1700 (more like 2000 these days) for the Crystal and a GPU to drive it? ... No thanks! :) Even if I add up the cost of both the Q3 and my current 4070 S, that wouldn't be nearly enough money to buy *either* the Crystal or the 4090.

Spending a lot of coin on a Pima headset only to have to send it back for a replacement is just not acceptable. (Having said that, I did have to return for exchange my first Quest 3 due to 'always on' pixel issues, so Pima isn't the only outfit with quality problems).
Absolute great video for newcomers to VR. I'm looking to get into VR myself for sim racing and flight sims. I'm torn between the big screen beyond and crystal light. I think I may go towards the crystal light as the BSB needs a base station and controllers? The VR1 seems to be the best but I cant find much on UK resellers.
I just come across this so it might already have been done. I’m trying to find out what specs are needed in a computer to run these. I have a high end alien laptop and quest 2 says it’s not even good enough ! Do u have a video on this at all?
G2 is still very good and was ahead of it's time. I bought a Q3 and it is still not as clear as the G2. Q3 is great on everything else VR, but for flight sims it is a little lacking. If it would had a direct GPU cable I think it would have been a lot better.
I have been using my HP reverb G2 for 2 years now and have it tweaked for the sim and enjoy it immensely! so my question is will it just up and die if I buy MSFS 2024? I am not a computer guru, i hate having to spend a lot of time figuring out how to make a peripheral work when it is supposed to be plug and play so changing headsets is not on my list of things to do unless my hp will no longer work!
Steve, I bet you pre-ordered Flight simulator 2024 Aviator edition and you are rubbing your hands with the pleasure of having the most expensive and complicated vr headset on the market along with a shiny RTX 4090. 😌But this comfort is your right! Please do not deprive us of through the lens videos of each vr headset device you have as soon as flight sim 2024 is released... So that we know which vr device promises what at what price.
I wish I could agree with you on the Pimax Crystal Light! I have one and even after a month of Pimax helping me by sending thicker facial foam pads is just simply doesn't fit the shape of my face. It is so wide it need clamping so tight to stop it flopping side to side it hurts and then the advantage of the thicker foam to stop it resting on my eyes is lost. All that and I don't feel my head is exceptionally unusual, Reverb G2 fits really comtortably. Trying to return it but Pimax have now gone comms silent!
I find the CL to be very comfy, you don't need to clamp it to your face at all, for me, it sits on my head like a cap and it's not on tight at all. But like a pair of shoes, everyone is different. Maybe check out my comfort mods, I have a video on the channel. Best of luck.
Get the comfort mods (or mod it yourself, there might be another smaller foam included which you could cut in shape to fill the gaps), it's not worth sending it back if this is the only issue
Thanks for all the comments guys but the last thing I expected when paying nearly £1000 was to get a DIY upholstery project. The fit is just the start of it and if I could have fixed that within the return period, initially 14 days extended to 1 month by Pimax, I would have persevered but alas I couldn't in the time allowed and I'm not going to risk being stuck with such an expensive item that doesn't work for me. I'm not as experienced with VR HMDs as some of you but this CL would be my 4th (starting way back in the Rift CV1 days) and the only one that needed anything other than settings tweaking out of the box.
Simple question: I know the Quest 3 is not going to give the same great images as the Crystal Light. But which of those 2 headsets has the best fps performance? I'm guessing the CL will perform better with better fps, and therefore less likely to stutter or jitter.
@@VRFlightSimGuy How does a PCVR headset affect stuttering? It's just a fancy display. Moreover, how would a CL provide him a higher frame rate than a Quest 3, when a CL requires his GPU to push double the pixels? With the Quest 3 he'd be trading on sharpness for higher frame rates, but if higher frame rates are the primary concern, a lower end headset would be the better choice. Right? Or a better PC of course.
Everyone or most people think they need to run out and piss away thousands on big ass PC in order to run MSFS 2024 with VR. Yet thanks to DLSS/ FSR resolution upscaling, or maybe just a few settings to adjust, My lil 5yr old $100 dollar r5-3600 paired with a used $150 dollar 5700xt will run anything up to 1440p resolution perfectly fine .lol Same overall experience
Its so hard to choose a headset now with MSFS 2024 coming. The difference between the VR1 and Crystal Light looks very big. Was that through the lens at full native resolution? Is it possible that Pimax implements the Nvidia sharpening technic too? That price for the VR1 is that high. 😢 I would love to support that made in EU Point but 3000€ incl Taxes hurts that much. With everthing around that hobby I can make a real pilot license. 😢 And the crystal super isnt released now.
I play warthunder air sim and have a choice. Quest 3 by Christmas or wait maybe 6 months and get pimax crystal. Is the pimax better enough in a combat sim for the price and wait time?
Thank you. Now i have a Pimax Crystal light. Amazing. But it it is hard to find the IPD Sweetspot- In reverb G2 i have 67-68, in Crystal a have 61. Now Pimax send me new lenses.
@@VRFlightSimGuy But why, nobody speaking obout this problem? :-) Nice from Pimax say, we should do first, new lenses. If it ok for me. Maybe if this not ok, then a new Crystal. But my Crystal looks Amazing in MSFS. So deep Sharp. The only Problem is, to find the IPD Sweetspot. I have 61mm in Crystal an digital left right 1.7. And little bit "Zone" blurry. Sorry for my English.
Hi, you can get lens inserts for the CL, VR Wave are a channel sponsor SO I have 5% off, however, they will stick out a bit so you will need a thicker facial foam than the stock one. I still think it's a much better solution than wearing your glasses as you will run the risk of scratching your headset lenses.
The focus distance of the Crystal Light is 1 meter. So however you are able to see at 1 meter distance without your glasses is how well you will see in the Crystal Light without lens inserts.
Reducing brightness on the Beyond does lower glare. And up to a point, because it has a perfect 3D printed light seal for your face, the headset will not seem less bright because your eyes adjust. Glare is also reduced by getting your eyes closer to the lenses. You can order thinner cushions from Bigscreen, and they'll reuse your previous face scan to make the new cushion. Ideally, your eye lashes would be just short of touching the lenses. However, even at best, the glare does not go away. It is definitely the achilles heel of the Beyond. In my opinion, it's still the overall best VR headset on the market anyway despite this. But that opinion is going to be affected a lot by however much glare bothers you.
OK, H24x Windows update is due this month so just ordered a Crystal Light based on your recommendations. It was going to be either that or the Quest 3 and as that has now been discontinued... well, a one horse race really. Hoping I get as much fun out of this as I have my old defunct Reverb Pro (which I also bought on your recommendation).
It would be nice to see how you install the Bobo VR M2 Pro head strap to the Somnium VR-1. What audio/microphone solution do you recommend for the VR-1?
no to crystal . I sold mine in favour of the q3 as for me the quality of the lenses and screen it was so close I couldn't justify the price I paid for it.
So I'm looking to get a new headset, currently a Quest 1, but am still running MSFS on a Ryzen 9 3900XT with an RTX2080S. Would I be better upgrading the PC first or would say a Quest 3 run OK on my PC?
Will Crystal Light work on en old pc spec. Cpu intel Core i7 8700 @ 3.20GHz motherboard ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME B360M-K. Ram DDR4 16G B 1066 MHz X2 Tot 32GB hard drive seagate barracuda hybrid 2Tb and seagate barracuda hybrid 1Tb GPU AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT win10
I have a Pimax 8kx (higher resolution and wider) and it works fine with the I7 8700 k. However, I don't know for FS2024, and my graphic card is 3080 TI so it helps
@@VRFlightSimGuythat would be fantastic. I didn’t think that was the case as I wear blue light filters at night which makes my screen appear ‘warmer’ than what it is. Do they make them with prescription lenses or are they seperate? If so, can you load both into the HMD together?
@@Dachopper_ Yes you can add in your prescription lens and they will fit nicely onto your VR headset's lenses. Since I don't wear glasses, I use 'plano' inserts, so I can still benefit from protecting the VR headset's lenses from scratches and blue light. Cheers.
@@VRFlightSimGuy Sorry I meant would you know if they do a prescription lens with a blue light filter so you can play with both or does it have to be one or the other? Hope that makes sense
@@x32i77 Varjo are ending the support very soon (end of the year), so I cannot recommend to my subs. If you already have one though, enjoy it as it's still great, but not worth a new purchase.
@@VRFlightSimGuyFair. I am super happy with the Aero and will stick with it as long as it is working. I would also not risk recommending a discontinued product either, though.
It would seem that the production of micro Oled displays has major limitations other than size, which means that the super oled will have a very narrow fov, no larger than Crystal. There are videos explaining these displays. And simply those to have a larger fov still do not exist. That's why they don't even state the fov of the micro oled version.

@@SargonDragon Look at the history of the Pimax Crystal Light, that story had a happy ending, why wouldn't it be the same with the Pimax Crystal Super? I bought the Varjo Aero, then the Pimax Crystal (the first one), and I sold both headsets because of those damn aspheric lenses. From now on, I'll never buy VR headsets with aspheric lenses again, it'll be pancake lenses or nothing. And if all VR headsets come out with aspheric lenses for the next 10 years, well, I'll just keep using my Quest 3, it'll be a nice saving :)
@@cedrick7679 The Crystal Light is the first time Pimax ever released a product anywhere near when they said they would. And this was a product that was _deleting_ features from the previous Crystal rather than adding new ones. Which is also the first time Pimax has ever done _that._ So there's a big question here as to whether Pimax has turned over a new leaf or whether the Crystal Light was timely only because of the special nature of it. The Crystal Super was supposed to release in September according to the same announcement. How's that going? But besides the Crystal Super in general, Pimax was also really unspecific about the OLED module's specifications and timeline. And they've said the OLED module will be releasing later after the QLED module. If you look at Pimax's history with that sort of thing... I'm not saying it's impossible that they'll release it soon after, but it would be the first time in their history. It matches the pattern of other perpetually "just around the corner" Pimax products. Sometimes the products this company announces are real and sometimes they're vaporware.

I’m going to be sticking with my Aero until the VR1 and the XR4 are out in the wild and see what there released version feedback is like
I have been using my HP reverb G2 for 2 years now and have it tweaked for the sim and enjoy it immensely! so my question is will it just up and die if I buy MSFS 2024?
So that we know which vr device promises what at what price.
haha you may be surprised to know, I haven't actually pre ordered yet :)
Is there any company that has a customer support line that can help decide which vr would be best for me?
I feel like we'll better wait for the release of msfs2024 and see how it does first.
I have a thin face. My Crystal Light fits perfect and stays put when I move my head.
CL 👍
@@VRFlightSimGuy
How does a PCVR headset affect stuttering? It's just a fancy display.
Moreover, how would a CL provide him a higher frame rate than a Quest 3, when a CL requires his GPU to push double the pixels?
With the Quest 3 he'd be trading on sharpness for higher frame rates, but if higher frame rates are the primary concern, a lower end headset would be the better choice. Right? Or a better PC of course.
Still on my trusty G2 hooked to a 4090. Works for me, but i do see the impoved image quality on the new vr tech. Is it worth the upgrade?
Everyone or most people think they need to run out and piss away thousands on big ass PC in order to run MSFS 2024 with VR. Yet thanks to DLSS/ FSR resolution upscaling, or maybe just a few settings to adjust, My lil 5yr old $100 dollar r5-3600 paired with a used $150 dollar 5700xt will run anything up to 1440p resolution perfectly fine .lol Same overall experience
Thank you for your video!
But what about Meta Quest Pro? Would you recommend it instead Quest 3 for medium-end pc with 4070 GPU?
BSB looks good, until I heard something about a 'base station required'? What is this?
Thank you. Now i have a Pimax Crystal light. Amazing. But it it is hard to find the IPD Sweetspot- In reverb G2 i have 67-68, in Crystal a have 61. Now Pimax send me new lenses.
Hey Michael, I hope the new lenses are OK. Keep us updated
Hi do I need lenses for my pimax crystal light..I only use reading glasses .do not have headset yet.
Can you adjust the brightness/contrast to lower the glare if needed in the Bigscreen Beyond?
You can adjust the brightness yes. Glare depends on the scene.
After all the expected bad news with Pimax, im seriously considering spending $1000 more just to get a good quality VR1 and that extra FOV
I'm trying to choose the right laptop for MSFS VR, price under $2000.
What should I look for and avoid when deciding a laptop for VR or MSFS?
No idea sorry.
@@VRFlightSimGuy No Worries, thanks.
@@freeqtek Make sure it has DP input, even then some have issues
It would be nice to see how you install the Bobo VR M2 Pro head strap to the Somnium VR-1. What audio/microphone solution do you recommend for the VR-1?
It's very easy, the strap just slips right onto the main arms.
My inserts were plastic, is this the case with other pimax crystal lite buyers from VRwave?
no to crystal .
A better PC would certainly help, as unfortunately one affects the other, especially when you bump up those resolution.
How i can check my Pimax Crystal Light in terms of quality?
Does it look ok when you look through it? Most issues seem to be related to bad lenses.
@@VRFlightSimGuy looks fine to me :) Everything is perfect clear. I don't know what I should pay attention to. :)
@@pynio Then you're all good. Enjoy :)
is there good VR Headset for Debian Linux
Really wish Quest 3 had display port…or Big Screen Beyond had inside out tracking.
Where in the U.K can you try VR headsets before paying out big money to experience it?
I don't think you can, I guess that's why channels like mine are so helpful.
did you get VR to work in msfs2024 i cant get it to work for me
And what is with People that dont have an 4090 etc.? Iam on a 3080Ti and think about substitute My G2. But the Question is which one.
Crystal Light - I'll have a video on this next.

Maybe, with the right settings. The 8700k is or was, a fantastic CPU in its day.
@@VRFlightSimGuy Should I buy another headset its my first vr headset and AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT I recently bought as I had nivida rtx 2060 before
I have a Pimax 8kx (higher resolution and wider) and it works fine with the I7 8700 k. However, I don't know for FS2024, and my graphic card is 3080 TI so it helps
Sure blue light filters will help with eye strain but wouldn’t they ruin your visual experience and immersion?
Negative, you do not see any change in colour
@@Dachopper_ You can have both ... and anti glare too.
ill be using my pico neo 3 link
Crystal Pimax Light with a 5090?
Can you imagine? I may have something to show early next year once I get my hands on one.
And don't forget about the varjo Aero since it has better resolution in the distance than the crystal
I do not recommend the Aero anymore
@@VRFlightSimGuy why so it's super comfortable , has eye tracking and epic visuals .
@@x32i77 Varjo are ending the support very soon (end of the year), so I cannot recommend to my subs. If you already have one though, enjoy it as it's still great, but not worth a new purchase.
@@VRFlightSimGuy what will actually happen once there is no support ?
@@VRFlightSimGuyFair. I am super happy with the Aero and will stick with it as long as it is working. I would also not risk recommending a discontinued product either, though.
I think I’m gonna build an AMD AM5 Pc paired with a 4070 ti super: along with the PSVR2.
PSVR2?
Waiting for the Pimax Super, micro OLED! ❤
Me too!
You and me both!
It would seem that the production of micro Oled displays has major limitations other than size, which means that the super oled will have a very narrow fov, no larger than Crystal. There are videos explaining these displays. And simply those to have a larger fov still do not exist. That's why they don't even state the fov of the micro oled version.
Cannot go without mixed reality so I can also see my cockpit in VR, so it's still only Q3, until something else comes along.
It is a great feature that's hard to live without
Hey Steve. Your thumbnail in another video about the BSB had a price drop but I see there isn’t. Can you please eleaborate in this thumbnail or is it just clickbait lol 😂 jokes aside great video my friend.
Hey Greg. There is currently a small discount of about £57 if you use my discount code :)
@@VRFlightSimGuy Aha thats it.. Well thats good enough my friend. I thought for a second they might slash the price by a 3rd lol.....wishful thinking. Are you buzzed as much as me about msfs24 coming out? : )

I have an index, should I upgrade to the big screen or meta quest 3?
pimax super oled with 57 PPI and pancake lenses !! 😍😍😍 (Somnium is very good but aspherical lenses.. no thanks)
Fair enough!
You could be waiting a long time. Possibly forever. See the history of the 12K.
@@cedrick7679 if you can't stand aspheric lenses you might have hypermetropia.
Microsoft dropped all mixed reality on windows 11 so I thought all of this stopped working now?

VR flight simulation relies heavily on having a high-performance PC, which is expensive. I wonder when we’ll see the first true VR flight sim streaming platform. Meta should really explore this idea.
