IS VR FINALLY UNLEASHED? - RTX 4090 TESTED for VR Sim Racing & Flight!

  • It's been my opinion for a while now that VR was "almost but not quite there" when it comes to Sim Racing and Flight Sims. While there are some absolutely awesome headsets out there that are capable of insane clarity, in my opinion the PC hardware to actually take advantage of it wasn't quite there yet.
    That is until the RTX 4090 came along. So today we're taking a look at exactly what the RTX 4090 brings to the table in terms of performance with a range of high end VR Headsets including the HP Reverb G2, Varjo Aero, Pimax 5K Super and Pimax 8KX to see exactly what's now possible!

    IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING VARJO AERO: There is currently a known bug that is causing stuttering on the Varjo Aero on the 4090. The Varjo team are aware of this and are working on a fix. Interestingly, we did not experience the issue during our testing while filming, however I was able to reproduce the issue later.
    Stay tuned to the Varjo Discord channel for the latest updates regarding this.

      Thanks for the awesome video!! Always appreciate the work you put in. You mentioned thinking about methodology - not sure if you've seen Ham VR's approach which used a feature of FPS VR which looked at GPU usage and frame times. It was also really useful! All the best.

      Hello Mr. Boosted media, I love your videos, I am here in Prescott Arizona in the states. I have my new cockpit and the triple monitors and stuff is on the way. I want something that has better feed back in the wheel and better pedals but don't want to be overwhelmed with tinkering to get it right or figure it out. I was leaning towards the Logitech Pro but thought I would reach out to you for a recommendation. Anyways thank you for your helpful videos.

In my case (HP Reverb G2 / 100% Screenresolution/ 3200×3100) i get stable 90 Frames in ACC on EPIC settings on most points with DLSS (!!!) . Only mirror, mirror resolution and foliage is down to MED settings, mirror view distance is on 120 meters and thats it. 24 players multyplayer smooth as i want it and clearity of the picture is a lot better. Haven't even watched yet, but so excited for this. My 3070 is struggling when running things like crowds/grandstands in iracing with a bigger field of cars, and while not 100% necessary, it'd be nice to get the full experience without having to worry about setup/tweaking. I've also got a 3070, starting to hit it's Vram limit on some pancake games and always have to make to many sacrifices with graphics settings in VR.
      It's a shame it really needed at 8GB of Vram, but even that isn't, still it doesn't really have enough horsepower for SIM games, where immersion is everything in my opinion.

    • @CorporateZombi
      @CorporateZombi Год назад +20

      I don't think waiting should be the take-away here. VR is so immersive even at lower graphics settings on headsets with lower resolution. Resolution scaling is literally icing on the cake and certainly shouldn't be the deal breaker. The experience is and has been amazing even back with a oculus CV1 and a gtx770 4gb which was technically below spec. I have a gtx1080ti and a 4770k 16gb now and you can absolutely run asetto Corsa on a pimax 5k at full frame rate at 1.0 resolution scaling. Whilst also running a full motion SIM rig software.
      You absolutely don't need a card as powerful as this one to be actually in the car. And you don't need to be on ultra graphics settings.
      The diminishing returns on trying to achieve max settings on super high resolution headsets in the latest games is striving for perfection but forgets that having stereoscopic vision in a headset that puts you actually in the car is already 1000x better than looking at a 3 screen setup.
      Cheaper headsets like quest 2 and Pico 4 and reverb G2(on sale) will absolutely get you an amazing experience at a far more reasonable price at resolutions that are acceptable and easier to achieve with older hardware.
      I think the conclusions in this video are all wrong (sean Connery red October voice) if 'you should wait' is the take-away.

      Honestly for a cheap secondhand Oculus Rift S it is worth the money to at least introduce yourself to VR. It has great bang for buck value and I would be surprised if you weren't happy with it.
      I am running one on a gtx1070 and most sims play brilliant. ACC is trickier to dial in but the experience you get from VR is unmatched.

      I feel the same. The different perspective isn't enough to "trick" my brain into liking the lower quality image. lower than my eyes are already so used to now on a tv or monitor anyways.

    • @Major_Watts
      @Major_Watts Год назад

      All fair responses guys, thanks! To give more context to my point of view I have never tried any form of VR to date.. When reviewers talk of motion sickness/eye strain and headaches it turns me off due to suffering from quite bad headaches/migraines anyway.
      It does feel that VR is starting to hit that sweet spot between clarity and FPS that (like it has been said) tricks the brain and the strain on the eyes/brain diminishes… at an affordable price.
      I am very keen to get into VR for Sim Racing but can’t justify the leap financially until it takes that next step tech and price wise.

    • @CorporateZombi
      @CorporateZombi Год назад +2

      @@Major_Watts Motion sickness can be a real problem. If you're the kind of person that gets motion sick when trying to read as a passenger in a car, or when traveling on a boat then it might be a problem for you, at least initially.
      Caused by the disconnect between what you see and your vestibular system (what your balance in your ears) tells you is happening. VR motion sickness is sort of the opposite thing. Visually it looks like you are moving, and your ears say you aren't.
      As with anything it's something you can train to overcome. But should not try and 'push through' if you start to feel it happening. For some people it isn't a problem at all and they wonder what you are even talking about!
      I actually find that sim racing is one of those VR experiences that doesn't give me motion sickness. For me certain planes of motion like acceleration in the yaw plane can be a problem (like when I'm playing a kayak game). The thing about car games is that there is usually a fairly static cockpit around you, and that can help and the motion feels more like something you are in control of through a wheel.
      High frame rate certainly helps, because when you get disconnect between head movement and what you see on a screen that covers your field of vision, you are back to traditional motion sickness again! Disconnect between what your eyes see and your ears tell you.
      As far as eye strain is concerned, I haven't had that. I'm long sighted and normally wear glasses. As current headsets are set to focus near infinity, I find I don't even need to wear my glasses in the headset.

Problem I had was when I started racing on the triples I seriously struggled with the flat screens for almost 2 weeks and thought I made a mistakes. Iracing is amazing in vr but always struggled for good image and performance in ACC (5900x and 3090 on valve index) so triples are really for ACC. But now that I'm used to it I'm scared to jump back in to vr for racing worried that I'll lose that immersion and judging corners in 2d.

I run a 2060 super with a quest 2 and with some minor tweaking of graphics settings in Iracing I can run stable frames and the game looks fine, you do not need to spend $4k on graphics to have fun. Use a Quest 2 with the fibre optic link cable and so far I can max out the resolution slider but only at 90hz then in game on ACC/AC and iRacing I can max out graphical settings. A weird bug with oculus desktop app since installing the 4090 it now warns me my PC specifications are not powerful enough 😂. Might be the reason why if I try to set it at 120hz the image in the headset bugs out with flashing and bad lag. Other than that if you are upgrading like me from an older card, it’s an amazing experience! Overpriced of course but oh well lol.

    Hi Will, thanks so much for all the bench marks. I’m still watching as I write this, so may add more after this, but before I forget, how on earth did you get your GPU utilising more than 8GB of VRAM on iRacing? I’ve been so frustrated with the limit they’ve still got in the game, because it greatly limits my ability to properly utilise my 3090 via supersampling my 8KX, and I suspect this frustration will be even worse with a 4090, since I’m literally already maxed out on 3090. So when I saw your benchmark tool reading well over 8GB VRAM usage, I was just wondering if you knew something I didn’t? A trick maybe to get around the limit? Or maybe the GPU isn’t actually using all the VRAM on iracing? Iracing is my main sim I play, so it would be a game changer if I could get around that limit.
    Otherwise, great video thanks mate! You actually benchmarked every game that I also personally benchmarked back when I first got my 3090 (except F1 22), so good work on the sim choices! Anyway, regardless of VRAM iracing limit, I still can’t wait to upgrade in the near future, especially for MSFS 2020. Keep up the good work! 😊 Cheers

    Hey mate, noticed around 5mins you are talking about the reverb g2 but you are rendering way above it's resolution @ 5080x4356, while in VR you need to render higher to account for image transformations and a crop down to the target resolution of 2160x2160 per eye, that's about 1.4-1.45X panel res, so around the 3k'ish mark for reverb G2. I've got quite a bit of extensive experience and knowledge in VR if you have any queries feel free to reach out. Thanks

    IS VR FINALLY UNLEASHED? Great title, that sums it all up. We're getting there. Since so many people spend so much money on hardware to achieve the best VR results, I wonder when eventually a sim racing developer wakes up and comes up with an "ultimate" racing sim, not only catering for an elaborated sim in general, but also for an optimised VR experience. In other words, I only spend 1% on the software and 99% on the hardware. I wouldn't mind to spend much more money on the sim software. And I guess i'm not alone. So, developers, take the risk (or financing) and come up with a true new gen racing sim (utilising a next gen engine like UE5 or whatever) now that the time and the HW is right! There is a market for it.
