Confident Introvert is the phrase you are looking for !
He spends his time travelling around meeting new people.. often integrating himself by living with them.. doesn’t sound like an introvert to me.
Louis is a master at polite manipulation of people who are very odd.
Much like the BBC itself then.
I have been trying to figure out a good way to describe him for years and this is it lol
I don't think he manipulates them at all.
I feel like that first women is a journeyman manipulator of very confused and sad men using uncomfortable eye contact and southern accent.
These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty where can I find full episodes?
Louis is so incredibly subtle he has a brilliant ability of coming across as a naive fool but his subject matter don't realise he is just baiting them and then hands them the rope, and at the same time he is a very professional and intelligent journalist and not afraid to get himself into some very hot water. you have to love him.
Hmm, I agree to some point, but I think you're theory has some holes in it. He's not like Borat, where in that case he really makes people out to look like fools.

The Louis is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a scoundrel, parasite, swindler, profiteer, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. But call him a Jew and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.”

@Simon Simon Louis did become genuine and more friendly in his later work, which I do enjoy.
The wrestling episode was hard to watch. How dare those apes throw our darling Louis around like that!
Brutal how sarge was harboring feelings from the get go. He legit asked how the moves are thought out cause they know who's going to win already. But the guy took it like he said they faked every bit. Only a meat head would jump to that conclusion

I've listened to him in several podcasts and was surprised at just how funny he was, too. I'd recommend listening to Adam Buxton feat Louis Theroux
I watched it again what Louis asked. He was just curious how their training did look like. He never said that they weren't atletes. This man really doesn't listen.
RoozB14 he was honestly just too thick to comprehend his basic English
I agree. I feel very bad for Louis. But I hope it is footage the trainer is not proud of, he is a total dick.
Louis put the guy on the spot by asserting that pro wrestling is predetermined while he was being filmed. In that era of wrestling that's a very disrespectful move because if he said "yes it's scripted" he'd be outing everyone in the industry.
@@toprightchannel3080 I feel like it was pretty common knowledge that wrestling was fake back then.
@@BaldMancTwat Yes but that trainer would've wrestled and come from an era where they maintained it was real. Also Louis was clearly trying to trigger the guy.

The thing I love with Louis, and also the same is true of Karl Pilkington, is that the people they talk to in their documentaries believe that they're talking to a person who is beneath them and somebody who should be in awe of them and their usually peculiar ways. When in actual fact both of them are ridiculously well travelled, have experienced everything under the sun and have a humongous public platform.
Alright n' that.
It’s a skill anyone can learn. Genuinely listen, put yourself in their thought process, while maintaining your own individuality. Most people either go into attack mode, or believe whatever they are told.
“Takes a superior intellect.” Always cracks me up.

“Don’t move like that ill get the wrong idea” LOL
I really wanted Louis to end it with, "I did everything you told me to, now please answer the damn question!"
I really liked the red shirt wresler that kept telling Louis the he could do it, showing support, a little agresive, but nice. He looked like a nice guy.
It's way better than having people scream in your face.
“You can do it” and “don’t give up” are encouraging… but forcing a mans face into a corner because he doesn’t want to injure himself or vomit on his classmates is just ridiculous.
@@PTS156 Right? At some point I felt like I was watching something borderline illegal.
In high school, one of my classmates invited me to a hangout with some friends after school. I was 16, had just started a new school where I knew no one, so I said yes. We went to this local place where a band was playing, I talked to some people and it was pretty cool. They were all SUPER friendly. A few minutes in though I realize this is not just a normal 'hangout', this is actually a church meeting. I only realize this after the bands starts singing about Jesus. Sure, at first it's not that bad - just normal music but they sing about Jesus, sure, why not? The band's pretty good. But after a while, it gets weird. Everyones starts dancing around the room and the band tells everyone to scream Jesus' name and that we accept him 'in our hearts'. I'm a very shy kid and also not even christian, so I kind of just stare awkwardly into a wall. Meanwhile my classmate is looking to me the entire time, nodding encouragingly to sing along with them. I just continue to sit there awkwardly. When it's all over I rush to say goodbye and just get out of there quickly. So basically, my classmate tried converting the new kid in school under false pretenses. Probably one of the most uncomfortable experiences in my whole life. So I feel you Louis. I feel ya.
Yes its difficult ,especially when you had some friendship / respect with the friend ,whom turned out to be deceitful ,and whom ,did not lie just left out the truth ,(and don't forget your %10 Tithe on your wayout ,and the reciept too) ,they do not realise they put people off ,the Amway of religion ,except amway actually works ,

When it comes to documentary making, he's the master of his niche. He's up there with David Attenborough and Ken Burns as one of the elite
And werner herzog he's made some brilliant documentary films him and louis are great
John Wilson comes to mind, in a similar niche of naively procuring really illuminating situations for candid documentary purposes. It's hard to describe, they are very different but there are some very solid parallels.
Every second of Louis Theroux's life is an awkward encounter...but that's what makes him so awesome
Louis was like "I will gladly sit in this corner with my head on the wall if it means I get a break..."
"It's rectum is bubbling." Best and worst sentence I've ever heard.

At the risk of inciting trolls- it fills me an odd joy and dare I say even pride that I've watched ever single Theroux doc at the time of airing since he started his solo stuff in 1998. Theroux is simply great, and has been a backdrop in my life over those 21 years. His docs mean a great deal to me, especially since he changed his tone from quirky to much more serious in the late-mid/late-2000s.
Damn, I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing all his pieces that’s an awesome achievement
I've watched most of them multiple times
I wish I could but they don’t air everything of his in the US 😢
That’s amazing!!! I literally just discovered Louis Theroux yesterday through his interview with Chelsea Manning (although I’d heard his name thrown around) and I have a lot of catching up to do!!! I love that wrestling episode, he had no choice other than to along with the sarge but despite the uncomfortableness of the situation he knew it was making great TV.
I like that one too - the key bit is that while they are so macho and pushy about him finishing his reps and such, the spirit behind it is to encourage him! I think Louis knew that which might explain his repeated, often unconvincing statement of "no I can't". The gang isn't ridiculing him, it's an attempt (for their taste) at motivation. It's actually kind of sweet.

I’d welcome documentaries from Louis like these again. But anything from Louis is a gift, serious or silly.
That was really cool and cute of him to finally chant along with the lady. I totally understand not doing it but it was very gracious and classy of him to do some of it.

I couldn’t do that. How can he not even crack a smile?
the implicit distinction between "ghost" and "real" kills me
weird weekends was his peak. i miss the irreverent boy louis.
As much as I really enjoyed weird weekends I think it's best to look at the 2 different sides of his documentary filmmaking as separate things and rather than contrasting the 2 just enjoy both for what they are. I miss his early stuff as well but I think there was only so long he could do that for before either the public in general got a little bored and saw him as a one trick pony or before he himself got fed up as he grew up. But I totally understand where your coming from, he was wonderfully unique in his weird weekends stuff
He is still fantastic. Gas said himself he cant picture doing weird weekends anymore, that he enjoys more serious topics. No matter the subject. Louis has a unique ability to.give the subject just enough rope to hang themselves.
I agree Weird Weekends was peak in the sense that it contains all my favorite moments of Louis on television, but along with what others said in this thread I also believe it's age; There's something much less compelling about a host in their late 30s or 40s sleuthing around these fringe subcultures and oddball individuals. His youth fed into what made it funny. He did it at the right time.
