Unfortunately, it wasn’t illustrated by Yoshikawa so it felt rather lacking in that department. And Dragon Quarter was even more rushed than this one, so while it barely reached those standards, it made up for it with really cool ideas -- gameplay & story-wise.

Interesting stuff! I'm def of the opinion that the game is a prequel though - 3 main reasons:
    *SPOILERS*
    1. In the end, the dragons are no longer gods and ‘live out their lives as mortals’. Big set up for the genesis of the Brood. Also, ‘gods’ of this type (gods of the natural world, so to speak) aren’t present in the other BOF games.
    2. Yuna escapes and seeks to create another Endless god. Set up for Myria.
    3. Deis remains in the world - it’s her BOF origin story.

I remember rage quitting dragon quarter and thinking it was the dumbest game ever. A year later when I understood the game more I came back and it became one of my favorite bof games of all time! A hint for anyone wanting to play it. You can't beat it on your first or maybe even second play through, it's more of a dungeon crawler than a open world game like it's predecessors. Accepting that helps out immensely! You do get more powerful with each play through since you keep a portion of your experience though to level up your character's at each beginning. There's also an experience exploit that can make you a God if you learn it. Enjoy!🙂

  • @ReaperX7
    @ReaperX7 10 месяцев назад

From playing all the games, I can say, it IS a prequel.
The series truly starts at BoF4. The game takes place during the time when the world's ocean was choked by mud and silt.
This is because the great desert was expanding which caused myria in part 3 to raise her tower and try to protect the world. However, Myria was a created endless made by Yuna. And he even reveals during the end credits that he can make more endless.
Even though Capcom will never confirm it, the entire story arc of BOF4 points at it being a prequel to three and the start of the series which would mean the series goes from 4, 3, 1, and finally 2, with possibly 5 (Dragon Quarter) being a sequel to part two somehow.

One of my favorite games! The combo attacks - The story and being able to play as both the protagonist and the antagonist! the final choices you can make! Way ahead of it's time. Personally i believe it is one of the best games ever. When games had an actual good story and were not based only in good graphics and fancy attacks and ultimates.. I'm so glad i grew up with these kind of games and when games were in an experimental state, trying to improve slowly but steadily. And of course, not having any damn DLCs so the company can make more money out of it, by adding cheesy things the fan base wants... Gosh... I miss these days...

You mentioned it would have been better to have it release on the ps2, but I’m sure I’ve heard that Sony had some policy in place ensuring that sprites weren’t used but rather 3D polygons in their entirety for all PS2 games. I know that’s not the case for everything (such as collections like Metal Slug) but this may have meant alterations and would have lost the ps1 visual and that art style is so well done.
Generally I tend to see BoF3 heralded as the favourite but 4 is a great game too. I played BoF3 at launch and loved that but never got to play IV till years after the release and it didn’t quite suck me in like 3 did. The fishing game was great. Fishing for a whale if you got far enough was a funny moment.

I think Ryu and Fou-Lu in BoF4 are the split avatars of Lodon, the main Dragon God in Breath of Fire.
My theory is BoF4 takes place in an alternate universe where they summon gods form other universes.
Dies we know is a God and sister to Myria.
and when Ryu and Fou-Lu reuinite at the end they become Lodon once more. The Infinity Dragon. Least this is the route I came to. Lodon is the God of the Dragons (Or Brood as they are also called.) So when he was split into two, each half represented a Dragon Clan. Light Dragon Clan being Ryu and Dark Dragon Clan being Fou-Lu.

Never knew about the sub title, or all those mobile games. Now they said it wasn't a prequel but left it kinda open ended to be interpreted that way. My theory is, they did that intentionally. Neither confirming or denying certain plot overlaps from previous games, mainly Deis, *SPOILER*
being Myria's sister from previous entries is a pretty big deal. I think they originally intended to explain this eventually after Dragon Quarter, but didn't forsee DQ basically killing the franchise.

Funny thing is that when I was a kid (around 2000), I played this in a pirated copy but instead of getting the JP or Eng sub it is subbed in my country language (at that time English speaking people are very rare) the best part is that instead of using the NA version of the game it was using the JP version so I was confused when the video said "controversial censorship" since I remember as clear as a day about the peeking and the beheading part.
So basically my country pirate not only pirated the game but also localized the game. not from English but from Japanese which is more rare at that time since Japanese cultures like anime and video game are not that well known in my country at that time.
MFW the pirate is smarter than most of the country population back there.

From the 3rd in the series I knew Deis as the sister of Myria the goddess. I've never heard they were of the brood like Ryu but deity outside of them and humans. Perhaps lost in translation? Anyways I always liked how this progressed the classic style of turn based RPGs unlike the ways FF6 and others went about it with strange time constrictions for each characters turn which rushed the experience.

You said the fact that Naga, the blue haired girl, appears in Breth of Fire IV is a connection with the first 3 games, maybe sequel or prequel. That is not the case. I remember well the plot. Here is the expanation:
Fu-Lu was summoned from another world. Since the summon was badly done, half of his self did not come at the same time. The people in the Western Continent summoned him to be their emperor and to conquer all of the continent. Their goal was to summon a magical being with a lot of power to unify the continent. When he did conquer all of the continent, he became bored and decided to go to sleep to wait for the arrival of his other half. So he arranged the fake death and slept in his tomb until it arrived. 300 years later, his other half arrives with no memory: it is Ryu.
In the case of Naga, she was summoned before Fou-Lu/Ryu, but the technique was even worse. Only her soul was summoned and it somehow was put in the robot character in the game. That is why she has no body of her own.
To sum it all up: Breath of Fire IV appears in another world from an alternate reality but they know the secret arcane to summon the dragon people from the Breath of Fire I, II and III universe and drags them in their alternate dimension.
I would like to see your reply on this.

The localization is so rushed they spoiled Deis' name and the Endless early in the game in the conversation on the camp, before travelling to Mt. Glom to fix the King Sword.

Pretty sure BoF III is considered the best in the series moreso than IV, though its very close up there as well. I don't care for IV too much; Ryu's journey didn't feel that personal to me(felt more about Nina and Cray finding Nina's sister with Ryu as a tag-a-long); nothing like Fou-lu, which I thought was done MUCH better and felt much more personal with the things he had to go through.
On some side note: One thing that always bothered me was that Yuna escaped. I think there were hints(at least 1 cutscene of him after) that gave an impression that maybe you would be able to find him to "finish" that storyline once and for all, but would never come to pass. Can't tell you how many hours I wasted looking for a solution that was never there(keeping in mind, this is a couple months after NA release, so not much internet resources like today).
